The Decision Value of Management Support Systems for Strategic Hospital Management

Several studies have shown that selected management support systems (MSS) favorably impact decision making. Others have theorized that additional benefits could be achieved by consolidating the separate system functions to form an integrated management support system. There have been few, if any, reported empirical tests of this theory. This article offers empirical evidence on integrated MSS effectiveness. It points to the general literature on MSS effects, notes an empirical gap in this literature, and reports the results of experiments that assess the influences of a specific integrated MSS on the process and outcomes of strategic hospital decision making.

ERP and SCM systems integration: The case of a valve manufacturer in China

Many modern organizations integrate enterprise resource planning (ERP) and supply chain management (SCM) systems, as they work in a complementary fashion. This often results in technical and organizational challenges. Neway, a Chinese organization, recently went through this complex process. This required efficient procurement and management of hardware, software, and human resources for successful completion. The integrated system was found to improve operations, foster a paperless environment, and provide efficient inventory tracking and picking. It also had several tangible benefits, including reduced lead time and improved inventory accuracy. ERP and SCM systems integration is still a novel concept for a Chinese manufacturing organization. Our case study details the organization's experience, identifies challenges that were faced, and describes solutions adopted to overcome them.     

Object-management machines: Concept and implementation

The software development process deals with a wide variety of documents. For the preparation of these documents, as well as for their maintenance, appropriate data management support is requested, resulting in the coexistence of multiple object management systems within a single, advanced software development environment. In order to homogenize data management in software development environments we present the object management machine (OMM) concept as an integration framework for preexisting data management systems. An object management machine enables the creation of uniform access patterns to different data management systems, including the query interface and transaction processing. The concept is being developed in the framework of the EUREKA project ESF (EUREKA Software Factory)¹. To make it operational we demonstrate the suitability of the MUSE multidatabase integrator as an implementation framework for the Object Management Machine concept.     

A systematic review on cross-cultural information systems research: Evidence from the last decade

Based on a review of 40 articles published in the information systems journals of the senior basket since 2006, this article presents refreshing and updated patterns of cross-cultural information systems (CCIS) research and suggests a roadmap for future research in CCIS. This 10-year systematic review contributes to the information systems community by unveiling three streams of transitions in CCIS research: (1) from national level to individual level with espoused and contextual cultural values, (2) from corporate users to end users, and (3) from West to East with the emergence of Chinese culture. The limitations and future research directions are presented.

A Review of Approaches to Developing Service Management Systems

As service management systems are deployed in an open service market environment, the pressures on their developers to shorten development times and improve the flexibility of systems will increase. Component reuse may help in alleviating some of these pressures; however, while object-oriented reuse is used in the definition of interfaces for management systems, the systematic application of reuse to the systems' internal design is not well established. This paper examines some of the approaches applicable to service management system development from the Telecommunications, Distributed Systems, Internet and Software Engineering fields. Experience in applying some of these approaches is presented, and based on this, refined approaches to service management system development are discussed.     

Model theory approach to transaction processing system development

This paper presents a new approach, model theory approach, to small and medium scale transaction processing system (TPS) development. A TPS of this paper is an information system designed to process day-to-day business event data at operational level of an organization. The paper is not concerned with data base construction but with transaction processing.

The model theory approach is not a software engineering approach but a systems theory approach. In the approach a model of the target system, which is called a user model, is constructed in set theory using a formal system structure of a TPS. The user model is, then, compiled into an extended Prolog (extProlog) model. The extProlog is an extension of Prolog to meet requirements for management information system development. On compilation a standardized user interface (UI) called internal UI is attached. The extProlog model with the internal UI is, then, executed under control of another standardized UI called an external UI. Implementation is an integral part of the approach. Because the UIs are designed for the formalized (abstract) structure of a TPS, they can be standardized and are provided as black box components to system development. Because a systems developer is required to only build a user model in set theory based on a model theoretic structure in the approach, it is called a model theory approach. Advantages of this approach are that it provides a theoretical structure to information systems development so that systems development can be made an engineering discipline, and facilitates rapid systems development.
