Conducted 3 studies to validate a French version of the UCLA Loneliness Scale. The correlation between the French and English versions of the scale and the internal consistency and construct validity of the French version were assessed in Study 1, with 178 undergraduate students. Population norms were established in Studies 2 and 3, with 274 mild and severely depressed and nondepressed adults, and the concomitant and discriminant validity and test–retest reliability of the French version were assessed. Call Usage Learning in Gray Seals (Halichoerus grypus).

Call usage learning can be demonstrated on 4 different levels: signaling on command, signaling and refraining from signaling on command, responding to a trained stimulus with a signal from a specific signal class, and responding to the playback of any untrained stimulus with one from the same signal class. Two young gray seals (Halichoerus grypus) were trained successfully to demonstrate the first 2 levels. They also learned to respond to 9 moan stimuli and 9 growl stimuli with vocalizations of the same class (Level 3). However, novel moan and growl stimuli tended to elicit growls. This casts doubt on the possibility that gray seals can reach the 4th level, but it demonstrates that they are capable of the first 3 levels of usage learning. Counselor Language Entry and Response (CLEAR) system: Do you hear what I hear?

The profession of counseling and psychotherapy developed its own language by borrowing from the vernacular and, in so doing, altered meanings of words in idiosyncratic ways. In the examination of the language of counseling presented here, rigorous and painstaking analysis of counselor-client interactions at different levels of counseling proficiency inspired the development of the Counselor Language Entry and Response (CLEAR) system. This system incorporates various formulas to generate counselor responses appropriate for the intent and experience level of the professional. Preliminary work with the CLEAR system reveals verbal stratagems such as core phrases and phrase enhancers concocted to amaze and stupefy both the uninitiated and experienced client-pilgrim on that inner journey toward psychological growth. Usage modeling test in aerosols formulations

Authors emphasize the importance of "usage-modelling" test concerning the uniformity of doses in the case of aerosol formulations, containing propellants or supplied with atomising devices. Weight measurement was carried out to identify the uniformity of doses per actuation keeping non-use periods in the case of water-based solutions with different density and suspension containing HFC propellants. It can be concluded that uniformity of doses--applying non-use periods during the testing time--significantly depends on the composition, the density of the formulation and the spraying mechanism of the atomising device.     

Standards of pediatric electrophysiology

Milk proteins are hydrolyzed to prevent immunological reactions, but immunoreactive epitopes, including the ABBOS epitope of bovine serum albumin (BSA), can still be detected in commercially available milk protein hydrolysates. We used lactococcal cell-envelope proteinase (CEP) for the hydrolysis of the individual milk proteins and of mixtures thereof, or for the hydrolysis of sodium caseinate (contaminated with whey proteins). CEP exclusively degraded casein, leaving the four major whey proteins intact. This property facilitated the removal of the intact whey proteins from the casein fragments by ultrafiltration. Depending on the molecular mass of the whey protein to be removed, membranes with cutoff values between 3 and 30 kDa were used, resulting in casein hydrolysates free of protein fragments with cross-reactive whey-protein-specific IgE (immunoglobulin E) or ABBOS antibody-binding sites. Even the casein itself was degraded in such a way by CEP that cross-reactive casein-specific IgE antibody-binding sites could be eliminated. The product could find application in infant formulas for therapeutic and preventive treatment of children with cow's milk allergy; in addition, the preventive use of such formulas in children genetically susceptible to the development of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) should be considered if a relationship between the consumption of BSA and IDDM were to become more apparent. The method is also applicable for preparing casein-free whey protein preparations.     

Illuminating language: A review of Pinker, S. (1994) The Language Instinct.

In The Language Instinct, Steven Pinker has undertaken the daunting task of informing lay audiences about forty years of progress in the study of the psychology of language. Toward this goal, he offers a striking array of incisive, revealing examples and insights about the distinct character of human language. These examples serve more than to inform and amuse us about language: They are interwoven to create Pinker's thesis about one of the oldest themes of modern psycholinguistics: namely, that human beings are uniquely equipped, by virtue of their genetic endowment, to use language. This capacity is Pinker's "language instinct." Further, the reader will be able to grasp these analyses because they are preceded with effective overviews of modern grammatical theories of syntax (chapters 4 and 7), morphology (chapter 5), and phonology (chapter 6). The principles and examples of these chapters provide the infrastructure on which Pinker builds his arguments concerning linguistic universals, language acquisition, neural mechanisms, and evolution. Overall, The Language Instinct will provide experimental psychologists with worthwhile updates of those domains of language research that they do not closely follow, with myriad examples with which to embellish undergraduate lectures. A 39-year-old woman had relapsing polychondritis and Beh?et's disease, which was described as mouth and genital ulcers with inflamed cartilage syndrome (MAGIC). Serologic human leukocyte antigen analysis showed A24 (9), A31 (19), B56 (22), B62 (15), Cw6, DR4, DR9. Human leukocyte antigen allele analysis revealed DRB1* 0406/0901, DQA1* 0301/0301, DQB1* 0302/0303, DPB1* 0201/0501 through determining the genotype using the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) technique. Treatment with methotrexate (5 mg/week) and pentoxifylline (300 mg/d) was effective to control oral ulcers, erythema nodosum, and arthritis.
