The most prevalent microorganisms isolated from urine specimens of dogs (385) and cats (132) with clinical signs of urinary tract infections were Escherichia coli, Proteus spp., and Staphylococcus aureus. The results of quantitative urine-culturing methods showed 48.6% of the canine and 12.1% of the feline specimens had more than 10(5) organisms per ml of urine. The bacteria isolated appear to have a greater resistance to antibacterial agents than previously reported.  相似文献

Eleven species of spherical lactic acid bacteria (LAB) belonging to the genera Leuconostoc, Lactococcus, Enterococcus and Pediococcus were the predominant microorganisms in 40 samples of turmus, ready-to-eat lupin seeds debittered by boiling and soaking in water. The average counts of the LAB in the 20 winter samples and the 20 summer samples were 7.4 and 8.7 log CFU/g, respectively. The averages of the Enterobacteriaceae counts were 5.1 and 6.6 log CFU/g, respectively, and the 11 species isolated belonged to the genera Enterobacter, Citrobacter, Escherichia and Klebsiella. The average yeast counts in winter and summer samples were 3 and 3.2 log CFU/g, respectively, and the 5 species isolated were in the genera Saccharomyces, Cryptococcus, Rhodotorula and Candida. Although Salmonella was not isolated from any sample and the Staphylococcus aureus count in all samples was < 1 log CFU/g, microbial hazards could be associated with the high Enterobacteriaceae counts and the presence of Escherichia coli. Total alkaloid concentration in 30% of the samples examined was higher than 0.02%, thus making the seeds a potential chemical hazard. Boiling the turmus directly before consumption and discarding the seeds with a bitter taste may help in avoiding some of the microbial and chemical hazards which could be associated with turmus consumption.  相似文献

164 strains of free-living amoebae were isolated from public drinking water supplies, swimming pools and official swimming ponds in Strasbourg; 11 genera and 16 species were identified. Some strains of Acanthamoeba are pathogenic for mice by intracerebral inoculation. Among the two strains of Naegleria found none is pathogenic. The results concerning free-living amoebae are compared with the level of chlorine and bromine and with the presence of bacteria in swimming pools.  相似文献

Quantitative and species compositions of yeast contaminating eggs, fry and fingerlings of Salmo gairdneri Rich under artificial breeding have been studied. Prevalence of species of genera Candida, Rhodotorula, Cryptococcus and Debaryomyces is noted. Yeast isolated from perished eggs and sick fry do not possess pathogenic properties. Certain strains of yeast make stimulating effect on the studied microorganisms.  相似文献

A case-control study of calves under 3 months of age was carried out by weekly visits to 15 farms in the canton of Tilarán, Costa Rica. Most farms were dedicated to beef or dual-purpose (DP) production. Faecal samples were collected over a 6-month period from a total of 194 calves with clinical signs and from 186 animals without clinical signs of diarrhoea as assessed by a scoring system. The samples were investigated for the presence of viruses, bacteria and parasites. Torovirus was detected for the first time in Costa Rica and was present in 14% of calves with diarrhoea and in 6% of the controls. Coronavirus and Rotavirus were less frequently encountered in either one of the groups (in 9 and 7% of scouring calves and in 1 and 2% of controls, respectively). Escherichia coli was detected in 94% of all the faecal samples, but isolates from only three samples from calves with diarrhoea contained the K99 antigen. Similarly, Salmonella was found only in scouring calves. Cryptosporidium oocysts were detected in animals with signs of diarrhoea, while other coccidia oocysts, Strongylida and Strongyloides eggs were frequently found in animals both with and without diarrhoea. A conditional logistic regression (CLR) analysis to compare healthy and scouring calves showed a significant difference with regard to the presence of Torovirus, Rotavirus and Coronavirus.  相似文献

Chronic bacteriuria is a common occurrence among spinal-cord injury patients and others with neuropathic bladders. If bacteria are present in the urinary tract, the patient may develop symptoms of infection or remain asymptomatic. We have compared virulence properties of 28 Escherichia coli isolates from patients with symptomatic urinary tract infections (UTI) and 29 E. coli isolates from patients with asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU). Bacteria from patients with symptomatic UTI were more likely to be hemolytic than isolates from patients with ABU (P = 0.05) or fecal isolates obtained from healthy volunteers (P < 0.001). Bacteria from patients with symptomatic UTI were also more likely than strains isolated from patients with ABU (P = 0.08) or fecal strains (P < 0.001) to exhibit D-mannose-resistant hemagglutination of human erythrocytes. The results suggest that E. coli isolates from nonimmunocompromised patients who require intermittent catheterization and who develop symptomatic UTI may be distinguished from bacteria recovered from patients who remain asymptomatic and possibly from normal fecal E. coli.  相似文献

Virulence mechanisms of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli were investigated by inoculating commercial broiler chickens via the left caudal thoracic air sac with three highly pathogenic and three less pathogenic E. coli isolates. At 6 h postinoculation, all isolates had colonized the respiratory tract (trachea, lungs, and air sacs) and internal organs (liver, spleen, and kidney) of inoculated birds, but bacteria were recovered from pericardial fluid and blood only of birds inoculated with the more pathogenic isolates. F1 fimbriae were expressed on a high proportion of bacteria colonizing the trachea and to a lesser extent on bacteria in the lungs of birds inoculated with each of the isolates. F1 fimbriae were also expressed on bacteria in air sacs only for the less pathogenic isolates. P(F11) fimbriae were expressed on bacteria present in air sacs, lungs, kidney, blood, and pericardial fluid of birds inoculated with one of the more virulent isolates. On electron microscopy, bacteria of the more pathogenic isolates but not of the less pathogenic isolates were observed often associated with or within macrophages, which appeared to be viable, in the air sacs and lungs. In in vitro assays, the more pathogenic but not the less pathogenic isolates, were resistant to opsonization and phagocytosis in the absence of F1 fimbriae, whereas bacteria of all isolates were rapidly killed by avian macrophages when they expressed F1 fimbriae. These results suggest that resistance to phagocytosis may be an important mechanism in avian colisepticemia. They also suggest that F1 fimbrial phase variation to the nonfimbriated phase is favored in the avian lower respiratory tract, is more marked for the more pathogenic-isolates, and may be a virulence mechanism.  相似文献

Escherichia coli establishes a secondary respiratory tract infection in birds following inhalation of contaminated dust and litter particles. Escherichia coli express adhesins under conditions reflective of the ambient temperatures present in poultry houses. These microbial adhesins allow E. coli to attach to cell types that it initially encounters in the respiratory tract. Ambient temperature-regulated adhesins represent a new class of bacterial hemagglutinins that include pili and the thin, aggregative, flexible filaments known as "curli." This study examines the occurrence of the ambient temperature-regulated adhesins, curli (crl, csgA), and an avian-specific, temperature-sensitive hemagglutinin, tsh, among avian and mammalian E. coli isolates. The avian hemagglutinin gene tsh was present in approximately 46% of clinical avian E. coli isolates. This gene was not detected among commensal E. coli isolated from healthy broiler chickens. Unlike tsh, curli genes were ubiquitous among E. coli. However, curli were observed in only half of the avian E. coli examined by electron microscopy. Curli were not present among several nonavian E. coli positive for crl and csgA. Approximately 25% of avian E. coli isolates agglutinated chicken erythrocytes when bacteria were grown at room temperature. Hemagglutination was not specific to E. coli isolated from poultry. Presence of either tsh or curli genes was not indicative of an isolate's ability to agglutinate chicken red blood cells. No discernible structures were observed mediating attachment of the bacteria to chicken red blood cells. An additional avian-specific hemagglutinin appears to be present among avian E. coli.  相似文献

The microbiologists use the term corynebacteria to describe aerobically growing, asporogenous, irregularly sharped gram-positive rods. They comprise strictly aerobic bacteria isolated from environment as well as preferentially anaerobic bacteria found in clinical specimens. A large part of these bacteria is considered as commensal of skin and mucous membranes. This group of organisms has recently been subjected to considerable taxonomic revisions, which have resulted in the proposal of several new species, many of them representing previous Centers for Diseases Control coryneform groups. Moreover, recent investigations demonstrated the existence of a pathogenic role for some of them. These bacteria comprise well-known pathogens such as C. diphtheriae responsible for diphtheria, Actinomyces spp. responsible for actinomycosis and Arcanobacterium haemolyticum recovered from pharyngitis, but other corynebacteria were related to particular infections. For example, the lipophilic and antibiotics multiresistant species Corynebacterium urealyticum and C. jeikeium were found to be responsible for urinary tract infections and septicemias, respectively. The recently described species Turicella otitidis was found to be implicated in otitis media and C. seminale were recovered from genital specimens of male patients. Implantation of material devices, use of broad-spectrum antibiotics led to an increase of sepsis due to the species C. jeikeium and C. amycolatum. Many of the new Actinomyces species grow well under aerobic conditions and are often implicated in various abscesses. Moreover an increase of immunocompromised patients led to the development of infections due to the aerobic actinomycete Rhodococcus equi. The association of some corynebacteria with particular diseases should prompt the microbiologist to identify these bacteria when they are encountered in a pathogenic situation. Identification of the major part of corynebacteria isolated from clinical specimens can now be achieved by using recent schemes.  相似文献

Faecal swabs obtained from a random sample of 268 cows and 90 calves on 19 Lugo (northwestern Spain) farms were examined for necrotoxigenic Escherichia coli (NTEC) producing the cytotoxic necrotizing factors type 1 (CNF1) and type 2 (CNF2). We found NTEC CNF1+ and CNF2+ on 11% and 95% of the farms, respectively, NTEC producing CNF2 were significantly more frequently isolated from calves (58%) than from cows (17%) (P < 0.001). The proportion of animals colonized with CNF2+ strains on each farm ranged from 0% to 60%. NTEC strains producing CNF2 isolated from healthy cattle belonged to 27 O serogroups; however, 64% were of one of 12 serogroups (O2, O8, O8-O75, O14, O15, O55, O86, O88, O115, O121, O147, and O168). Furthermore, the serogroups determined in CNF2+ strains isolated from cows (O2, O8, and O14) were different from those found in NTEC producing CNF2 isolated from calves (O8-O75, O15, O55, O86, O88, O115 and O147).  相似文献

The Subsurface Microbial Culture Collection (SMCC) was established by the U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE) and contains nearly 10,000 strains of microorganisms (mostly bacteria) isolated from terrestrial subsurface environments. Selected groups of bacterial isolates from three sample sites situated above geochemically and hydrologically different subsurface environments have been characterized by phylogenetic analysis of 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene nucleotide sequences. Among these isolates were members of six major phylogenetic groups of bacteria: the high-G+C and low-G+C Gram-positive bacteria; the alpha-, beta-, and gamma-subdivisions of the Proteobacteria; and the Flexibacter/Cytophaga/Bacteroides group. A small number of the SMCC strains may be members of new bacterial genera, but most of them could be placed with reasonable confidence into more than 35 previously described genera. The majority of the Gram-positive isolates were species of Arthrobacter, Bacillus, or Streptococcus, whereas Acinetobacter, Comamonas, Pseudomonas, Sphingomonas, and Variovorax were among the most frequently encountered Gram-negative genera. A high proportion of the strains were placed in fewer than 10 genera, implying that there is substantial duplication within the SMCC at the genus level. When groups of isolates assigned to Acinetobacter, Arthrobacter, or Sphingomonas were analyzed in more detail, however, it was found that each group consisted of subgroups of strains that probably differed at the species level. Restriction endonuclease analysis (applied to the strains from one sample site) indicated that additional diversity was present at the strain level. Most of the SMCC isolates assigned to some genera (e.g., Acinetobacter) were very closely related to previously described species in those genera, but most of the isolates assigned to other genera (e.g., Arthrobacter and Sphingomonas) appeared (or were shown) to be new species, thereby indicating that a reasonable amount of novelty is present within the SMCC at the species level.  相似文献

During mammalian preimplantation development, a substantial numbers of embryos are believed to be lost for reasons that are unclear. Using female rats, we investigated whether the developmental status of embryos is influenced by bacterial infection and endotoxin in the reproductive tract. From the vagina of cycling rats (n = 11), 21 bacterial isolates were identified; they were Streptococcus faecalis (S. faecalis; 38%), Escherichia coli (E. coli; 19%), Acinetobactor calcoaceticus (A. calcoaceticus; 14%), and coagulase negative staphylococcus (14%), Micrococcus sp. (5%), Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis; 5%) and Proteus vulgaris (P. vulgaris; 5%). From the vagina of day 4 pregnant rats (n = 12), 26 isolates were identified; they were S. faecalis (23%), A. calcoaceticus (23%), E. coli (15%), Micrococcus sp. (15%), B. subtilis (8%), P. vulgaris (4%), Staphylococcus aureus (4%), beta-hemolytic streptococcus (4%) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (4%). Gram negative bacteria found in the vagina of cycling and day 4 pregnant rats were 38% and 46%, respectively. In both, bacterial load was 10(3)-10(5) colony forming units and there was no association with the abnormality of the recovered embryos. However, in two day 4 pregnant animals, pathogenic bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and beta-hemolytic streptococcus) were isolated and embryos recovered from them were degenerated and deformed. The vagina of day 9 pregnant animals (n = 7) were, however, sterile. Consistently, in all animals, the upper reproductive tract (uterus and oviduct) was devoid of any bacteria and no anaerobic bacteria were isolated from any part of the tract. The levels of endotoxin in the vagina of cycling and day 4 pregnant rats were 1.35 +/- 0.1 and 1.17 +/- 0.1 endotoxin units (EU), respectively. It was undetectable in the oviduct and uterus of all animals (n = 5) except one which showed high levels of endotoxin in uterus (4.5 EU) and oviduct (2.2 EU) and the animal also produced degenerated and deformed embryos. These results indicate that common bacterial flora of vagina may not affect embryo development and the presence of pathogenic bacteria in the vagina and/or endotoxin in reproductive tract could be detrimental to viability of gametes and preimplantation embryos in rats.  相似文献

The comparative study of the biological properties of H. influenzae strains isolated from healthy children and from patients with acute and chronic respiratory diseases has been made, taking into account the biochemical features (biotypes) and adhesive activity of these strains. Differences in various biotypes of H. influenzae strains isolated from patients with bronchopulmonary diseases and from healthy carriers have been established. H. influenzae strains isolated from various sources differ by their adhesive properties: strains isolated from patients with acute bronchopulmonary diseases have the highest adhesive activity, while strains isolated from healthy controls have the lowest adhesive activity. The data thus obtained indicate the possible dependence of the degree and duration of the colonization of the respiratory tract by H. influenzae on the biological properties of these microorganisms. The monitoring of the sensitivity of H. influenzae strains to antibiotics has demonstrated that these strains retain high sensitivity to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, gentamicin and exhibit a tendency towards an increase in resistance to penicillin and erythromycin.  相似文献

A microbial culture collection composed of 1820 bacterial strains, including 298 actinomycete strains, was established from the roots of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) seedlings harvested from conifer nurseries and forest sites. Two hundred and thirty-four strains inhibited the growth of Fusarium, Cylindrocarpon, and (or) Pythium spp. in in vitro assays. A significantly greater proportion of bacterial strains from actinomycete genera exhibited antifungal properties compared with bacterial strains from nonactinomycete genera. Eighty-nine percent of identified inhibitory strains were Streptomyces, Streptoverticillium, Bacillus, Pseudomonas, or Burkholderia species. The actinomycete species were isolated almost exclusively from forest seedlings. Recovery of inhibitory strains representing 29 microbial species was enhanced using a variety of methods to isolate microorganisms from the roots of seedlings from nursery and forest sites. Bacterial strains (including actinomycete strains) with antifungal activity were tested for in vitro growth inhibition of six clinical human bacterial pathogens (Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). Forty-eight percent of the tested strains inhibited one or more human pathogens, Inhibitory activity towards fungal and bacterial pathogens was strain specific, not species specific, and many inhibitory strains exhibited broad-spectrum activity. Strains with antifungal activity against several conifer root pathogens were also more likely to inhibit multiple species of clinical bacterial pathogens.  相似文献

In broiler operations, various health problems develop during the final 2 wk of the growing period, resulting in increased mortality and condemnation losses. At this stage, sickly birds were found to be systemically infected by various bacteria regardless of varied clinical signs, and the purpose of this study was to carry out thorough microbiological investigations on this problem. Thirty-one 6-wk-old broilers showing signs of illness were obtained from three farms, and bacterial isolations were carried out from the blood, liver, and hock joint. Bacteria were isolated from 87, 90, and 71% of the blood, liver, and hock joint samples, respectively. Mean bacterial counts in log10 of the blood (per milliliter) and liver (per gram) were 2.15 and 2.93, respectively. Among 132 bacterial isolates, major species were Staphylococcus (60%), Corynebacterium (18%), Escherichia coli (5%), and Stomatococcus (4%). Among 79 Staphylococcus isolates, 77 were coagulase-negative. Major species of staphylococci were S. lentus (19%), S. simulans (18%), S. cohnii (13%), S. gallinarum (10%), and S. captis (7%). In addition, six species of gram-positive and five species of gram-negative organisms were isolated. Thus, the apparent systemic infections were not caused by predominant pathogenic bacterial species, and adequately described as mixed infections. There were some significant relationships between isolated bacterial species and sampling sites, suggesting that certain organisms were abundant in the environment of a particular poultry house. These results indicate that systemic infections in market age broilers are caused by mixed bacterial species and suggest that they are caused by suppressed host antibacterial systems rather than pathogenic factors of microorganisms.  相似文献

The principle of the formation of the microbiological phenotype in the intestine of healthy persons was studied by the method of the population-genetic analysis. The microbial composition of the intestinal flora of healthy members of 10 complete families (altogether 50 persons) was studied. The study revealed that practically in all cases the variability of the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the phenotype under study on the levels of both genera and individual microbial species is formed mainly under the influence of environmental factors. The presence of indigenous bacteria in the intestinal microbiocenosis (including Escherichia coli with normal enzymatic properties) is strongly genetically determined.  相似文献

The aerobic fecal flora of wintering Brent Goos (Branta bernicla), Barnacle Goose (Branta leucopsis), Greylag Goose (Anser anser), White-fronted Goose (Anser albifrons), Pink-footed Goose (Anser brachyrhynchus), and Bean Goose (Anser fabalis) was studied. There were no specific differences between the various geese. Bacterial counts were in the range of 10(5)-10(7) CPU per gram of feces. Neither pathogenic bacteria nor rotavirus could be detected in the fecal samples of the wintering geese, so that a contamination of the environment with those pathogenic organisms could be excluded. The majority of the isolated bacteria belonged to the genera Bacillus and Pseudomonas; enterobacteria and streptococci were less common. The observations are discussed regarding their epidemiological and ecological significance.  相似文献

Biological cleanup-processes removing contaminations from soil and ground-water can be carried out "ex-situ" or "in situ". The pollutants are mineralized (totally or partly) by microorganisms. The successful application of bioremediation techniques often leads to an increase of aerobic and facultatively anaerobic bacteria in soil and/or groundwater, a fact that triggered discussions about a potential biological risk originating from these microorganisms. In this study the identification results of 10,200 microorganisms isolated from 109 ground-water- and 152 soil-samples of different sites contaminated with mineral oil or chlorinated aromatics are evaluated with respect to a possible biological risks originating from these microorganisms. According to their biological risk potential, 19.2% (1958) of the isolated organisms can be grouped into risk-groups II, that means they they are able o cause human disease but it is unlikely that they are spread to the community and there is effective prophylaxis or treatment available. The majority of isolates (81.8%) are grouped into risk group I, meaning that it is very unlikely that they cause a human disease. All these microorganisms are either adsorbed to the soil-matrix or within a closed system of a water-treatment-plant, so that the risk of infection is very unlikely for healthy individuals (regarding possible pathways of infection). The risk potential in waste-water-treatment-plants is regarded to be significantly higher than in biological soil-cleanup processes, because of the specific origin of the bacteria and the possible formation of aerosols.  相似文献

Enteric bacteria pathogenic to man were sought in a total of 974 forest mammals collected from a variety of sites in rural and jungle areas of Panamá. The highest incidence of infection among the mammals was observed during the Panamanian dry season, which normally extends from January through April. A minimum of 10 Salmonella serotypes including, three of the Arizona group and Ewardsiella tarda, was isolated. Opossums of the genera Philander, 11 of 54 (20.1%), and Didelphis, 12 of 102 (11.8%) demonstrated high infection rates. One sloth of the genus Choloepus and specimens of two genera of rodents also were infected to varying degrees: 1(11.1%) of 9 Choloepus, 8 (1.1%) of 704 Proechimys and 1 (16.7%) of 6 Diplomys.  相似文献
