Mass transit power traction networks as communication channels

The rapid progress of power line communications (PLC) for data transmission over electric power supply systems is now opening ways for special applications such as train automation in local transportation and mass transit (MT) systems. These DC-powered traction networks can be used as communication links between wayside equipment and the moving trains. As MT networks significantly differ from usual electricity supply systems, the usage of existing models and communication equipment for conventional PLC channels turns out infeasible. Therefore, the work reported in this paper focuses on MT channel investigation and modeling, in order to develop novel adapted solutions. The outcome is a stochastic MT channel model, which-besides multipath and time-variance-also includes peculiar properties such as the behavior of ring structures and the impact of the Doppler effect invoked by moving trains. In addition, a very special interference scenario is treated, caused by the rectifiers in these DC-powered environments. Besides a complete simulation model, this paper presents detailed guidelines for building emulation hardware, so that channel adapted PLC system design for MT networks can now be successfully started without further expensive field trials.

Made-to-Measure Mass Transit

This paper disccusses the ULTra project (ultra light transport) which is designed by Advanced Transport Systems. UTRA is one example of a mode of quasi-public transportation known as personal rapid transit, or PRT. According to PRT purists-including the board of the Advanced Transit Association, which advocates the use of technology to solve transportation problems-this label can be applied to transit systems that have all the following characteristics: fully automated vehicles that run on a reserved guideway; small vehicles that can, like taxis, provide exclusive use for small groups or even a single passenger; nonstop service using the most direct route avail-able; off-line way stations; and on-demand access to vehicles instead of fixed schedules. Because this will be the first true PRT system to go into passenger service, the ULTra project is a test case for whether all the claims made by PRT proponents are true. Proponents maintain that PRT can be an important complement to existing mass-transit systems such as light rail, commuter trains, and buses. PRT advocates also predict that personal rapid transit systems will entice people to drive less, reducing the congestion, energy consumption, and environmental impact from passenger car traffic

To television broadcasters good viewing figures are essential in justifying a programmes place in the schedules and, for commercial broadcasters, key to securing the all-important advertising revenue. As a result programme makers are constantly looking for new ways to engage and hold their audience, and allow them to participate in programme formats, particularly as part of live TV shows. One well established way of achieving this is to allow the audience to take part in a televote. Participants are attracted by the sense of direct involvement and influence that televotes provide, and because of this a televote can dramatically increase audience figures. To the operators of a public telephone network, however, these events represent concentrated, abnormal traffic patterns that have the potential to seriously degrade the quality and availability of the network for other applications, consequently specialised network technology needs to be deployed to make these events both manageable and profitable.
