A Pt microheater (140 × 100 μm2) is fabricated on a glass wafer and enclosed in a silicon microchannel of trapezoidal cross section by MEMS technology. With the aid of a high-speed CCD and data acquisition system, subcooled flow boiling phenomena and temperature response on the surface of the microheater under pulse heating are observed and recorded. Experiments are conducted for six pulse widths (50 μs, 100 μs, 200 μs, 600 μs, 1 ms, and 2 ms) under different mass and heat fluxes. With increasing heat flux at a fixed pulse width and different mass fluxes, four flow regimes including single phase, nucleate boiling, film boiling and dry out are identified. Since flow boiling regimes are relatively independent of mass flux, correlation equations based on experimental data for the transitional heat flux of different flow boiling regimes are obtained in terms of pulse width only. It is also found that pulse width and mass flux have little influence on boiling inception time, and the classical analytical solution for the nucleation inception time in terms of heat flux is verified experimentally.  相似文献

Effects of imposed DC electric fields on microbubble growth generated from a rectangular Pt micro-heater (140 × 100 μm) fabricated on one wall of the microchannel under pulse heating are investigated experimentally in this paper. Bubble dynamics and surface temperature response of the microheater during pulse heating are observed and recorded using a high speed CCD and data acquisition system. Measurements of nucleation time and nucleation temperature and heat flux at boiling inception are taken at a fixed flow rate of 0.6 ml/min and pulse width of 1 ms, and with the electric field strength gradually increasing from zero. With increasing electric field strength, it is found that heat flux required for boiling inception is increased, boiling nucleation time is delayed, and nucleation temperature is reduced. Bubble growth is suppressed by the inward dielectrophoresis force acting at the vapor/water interface which is induced by the electric field. As a result, the diameter of the bubble becomes smaller, and the interface instability is suppressed during the bubble growth period. In addition, it is found that multiple nucleate sites appear on the surface of the micro-heater at high heat flux when the electric field is increased to a sufficiently high strength. A map showing regimes of single and multi nucleate sites in a plot of heat flux versus electric field strength is obtained.  相似文献

A simultaneous visualization and measurement study has been carried out to investigate subcooled flow boiling and microbubble emission boiling (MEB) phenomena of deionized water in a partially heated Pyrex glass microchannel, having a hydraulic diameter of 155 μm, which was integrated with a Platinum microheater. Effects of mass flux, inlet water subcooling and surface condition of the microheater on subcooled flow boiling in microchannels are investigated. It is found that MEB occurred at high inlet subcoolings and at high heat fluxes, where vapor bubbles collapsed into microbubbles after contacting with the surrounding highly subcooled liquid. In the fully-developed MEB regime where the entire microheater was covered by MEB, the mass flux, the inlet water subcooling and the heater surface condition have only small effects on the boiling curves. The occurrence of MEB in microchannel can remove a large amount of heat flux, as high as 14.41 MW/m2 at a mass flux of 883.8 kg/m2 s, with only a moderate rise in wall temperature. Therefore, MEB is a very promising method for cooling of microelectronic chips. Heat transfer in the fully-developed MEB in the microchannel is presented, which is compared with existing subcooled flow boiling heat transfer correlations for macrochannels.  相似文献

In this paper we present experimental data on heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics at flow boiling of refrigerant R-134a in a horizontal microchannel heat sink. The primary objective of this study was to experimentally establish how the local heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop correlate with the heat flux, mass flux, and vapor quality. The copper microchannel heat sink contains 21 microchannels with 335 × 930 μm2 cross section. The microchannel plate and heating block were divided by the partition wall for the local heat flux measurements. Distribution of local heat transfer coefficients along the length and width of the microchannel plate was measured in the range of external heat fluxes from 50 to 500 kW/m2; the mass flux varied within 200–600 kg/m2-s, and pressure varied within 6–16 bar. The obvious impact of heat flux on the magnitude of heat transfer coefficient was observed. It showed that nucleate boiling is the dominant mechanism for heat transfer. A new model of flow boiling heat transfer, considering nucleate boiling suppression and liquid film evaporation, was proposed and verified experimentally in this paper.  相似文献

An experimental investigation has been carried out to study effects of surfactant additive on microscale boiling under pulse heating over a Pt microheater (140 × 100 μm2) fabricated in a trapezoidal microchannel (600 μm in width and 150 μm in depth). Experiments are carried out for six different surfactant concentrations of Triton X-100 ranging from 47 ppm to 2103 ppm, for mass flux in the range from 45 kg/m2 s to 225 kg/m2 s, pulse width in the range from 50 μs to 2 ms, and heat flux in the range from 3 MW/m2 to 65 MW/m2. As in existing work on pool boiling under steady heating, it is found that nucleate boiling becomes more vigorous and heat transfer is enhanced greatly with the addition of surfactant with maximum boiling heat transfer occurs at the critical micelle concentration (cmc). Furthermore, these maximum values of boiling heat transfer coefficient increase with decreasing pulse width. When concentration is below cmc, the heat flux needed for nucleation increases with increasing concentration and the nucleation temperature is reduced. When concentration is higher than cmc, the boiling heat transfer coefficient decreases and nucleation temperature is higher than that of pure water.  相似文献

Boiling in microchannels is widely considered as one of the front runners in process intensification heat removal. Flow boiling heat transfer in microchannel geometry and the associated flow instabilities are not well understood, further research is necessary into the flow instabilities adverse effect on heat transfer.Boiling is induced in microchannel geometry (hydraulic diameter 727 μm) to investigate several flow instabilities. A transparent, metallic, conductive deposit has been developed on the exterior of rectangular microchannels, allowing simultaneous heating and visualisation.Presented in this paper is data for a particular case with a uniform heat flux of 4.26 kW/m2 applied to the microchannel and inlet liquid mass flowrate, held constant at 1.13 × 10?5 kg/s. In conjunction with obtaining high-speed images, a sensitive infrared camera is used to record the temperature profiles on the exterior wall of the microchannel, and a data acquisition system is used to record the pressure fluctuations over time. Various phenomena are apparent during the flow instabilities; these can be characterised into timescales occurring at 100’s seconds, 10’s seconds, several seconds and finally milliseconds. Correlation of pressure oscillations with temperature fluctuations as a function of the heat flux applied to the microchannel is possible.From analysis of our results, images and video sequences with the corresponding physical data obtained, it is possible to follow simultaneously particular flow, pressure and temperature conditions leading to nucleate boiling, flow instabilities and transition regimes during flow boiling in a microchannel. The investigation allowed us to quantify and characterise the timescales of various observed instabilities during flow boiling in a microchannel. High speed imaging revealed some of the controlling physical mechanisms responsible for the observed instabilities.  相似文献

Liquid hydrogen flow boiling heat transfer in tubes is of great importance in the hydrogen applications such as superconductor cooling, hydrogen fueling. In the present study, a numerical model for hydrogen nucleate flow boiling based on the wall partition heat flux model is established. The key parameters in the model such as active nucleation site density, bubble departure diameter and frequency are carefully discussed and determined to facilitate the modeling and simulation of hydrogen flow boiling. Simulation results of the numerical model show reasonably well agreement with experimental data from different research groups in a wide operation condition range with the means absolute error (MAE) of 10.6% for saturated and 5.3% for subcooled flow boiling. Based on the model, wall heat flux components and void fraction distribution of hydrogen flow boiling are studied. Effects of mass flow rate and wall heat flux on the flow boiling heat transfer performance are investigated. It is found that in the hydrogen nucleate flow boiling, the predominated factor is the Boiling number, rather than the vapor quality. A new simple correlation is proposed for predicting hydrogen saturated nucleate flow boiling Nusselt number. The MAE between the correlation predicted and experimentally measured Nusselt number is 13.6% for circular tubes and 12.5% for rectangular tubes. The new correlation is applicable in the range of channel diameter 4–6.35 mm, Reynolds number 64000–660,000, saturation temperature 22–29 K, Boiling number 8.37 × 10?5–2.33 × 10?3.  相似文献

Sodium reacts chemically with water in the case of an unexpected tube failure of a steam generator (SG) in a fast breeder reactor (FBR). In order to predict the event with high accuracy, it is very important to understand the characteristics of heat transfer inside the tube in detail during the tube failure due to the sodium–water reaction. Experiments were performed by using purified water under the following conditions: initial pressure of 11.2–13.4 MPa, initial water temperature of 200 °C, and water mass flux of 45.7 to 3630 kg/(m2s). The test tube was heated rapidly by high‐frequency induction current. The time averaged heat flux was estimated by using an inverse solution from the measured temperatures at two points on three different locations along the tube. It was confirmed that the derived values agreed with the measured heat fluxes on the outer surface within 20% accuracy. It was found that the characteristics of the heat transfer strongly depend on the flow rate. The heat transfer on the wall changed from nucleate boiling to transient‐film boiling during increasing the heat flux and returned to the nucleate boiling during decreasing the heat flux. A counterclockwise cycle always appeared in the transition boiling region, where the nucleate and film boiling coexisted and the area ratio of these varied with time. The adequacy of heat transfer correlations to evaluate tube overheating was confirmed. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Flow boiling in microchannels is characterized by the considerable influence of capillary forces and constraint effects on the flow pattern and heat transfer. In this article we utilize the features of gas–liquid flow patterns in rectangular microchannels under adiabatic conditions to explain the regularities of refrigerants flow boiling heat transfer. The flow-pattern maps for the upward and horizontal nitrogen–water flow in a microchannel with the size of 1500 × 720 μm were determined via dual-laser flow scanning and compared with corrected Mishima and Ishii prediction. Flow boiling heat transfer was studied for vertical and horizontal microchannel heat sink with similar channels using refrigerants R-21 and R-134a. The data on local heat transfer coefficients were obtained in the range of mass flux from 33 to 190 kg/m2-s, pressure from 1.5 to 11 bar, and heat flux from 10 to 160 kW/m2. The nucleate and convective flow boiling modes were observed for both refrigerants. It was found that heat transfer deterioration occurred for annular flow when the film thickness became small to suppress nucleate boiling. The mechanism of heat transfer deterioration was discussed and a model of heat transfer deterioration was applied to predict the experimental data.  相似文献

Heat transfer with liquid–vapor phase change in microchannels can support very high heat fluxes for use in applications such as the thermal management of high-performance electronics. However, the effects of channel cross-sectional dimensions on the two-phase heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop have not been investigated extensively. In the present work, experiments are conducted to investigate the local flow boiling heat transfer of a dielectric fluid, Fluorinert FC-77, in microchannel heat sinks. Experiments are performed for mass fluxes ranging from 250 to 1600 kg/m2 s. Seven different test pieces made from silicon and consisting of parallel microchannels with nominal widths ranging from 100 to 5850 μm, all with a nominal depth of 400 μm, are considered. An array of temperature sensors on the substrate allows for resolution of local temperatures and heat transfer coefficients. The results of this study show that for microchannels of width 400 μm and greater, the heat transfer coefficients corresponding to a fixed wall heat flux as well as the boiling curves are independent of channel size. Also, heat transfer coefficients and boiling curves are independent of mass flux in the nucleate boiling region for a fixed channel size, but are affected by mass flux as convective boiling dominates. A strong dependence of pressure drop on both channel size and mass flux is observed. The experimental results are compared to predictions from a number of existing correlations for both pool boiling and flow boiling heat transfer.  相似文献

This paper is the second of a two-part study concerning two-phase flow and heat transfer characteristics of R134a in a micro-channel heat sink incorporated as an evaporator in a refrigeration cycle. Boiling heat transfer coefficients were measured by controlling heat flux (q″ = 15.9 − 93.8 W/cm2) and vapor quality (xe = 0.26 − 0.87) over a broad range of mass velocity. While prior studies point to either nucleate boiling or annular film evaporation (convective flow boiling) as dominant heat transfer mechanisms in small channels, the present study shows heat transfer is associated with different mechanisms for low, medium and high qualities. Nucleate boiling occurs only at low qualities (xe < 0.05) corresponding to very low heat fluxes, and high fluxes produce medium quality (0.05 < xe < 0.55) or high quality (xe > 0.55) flows dominated by annular film evaporation. Because of the large differences in heat transfer mechanism between the three quality regions, better predictions are possible by dividing the quality range into smaller ranges corresponding to these flow transitions. A new heat transfer coefficient correlation is recommended which shows excellent predictions for both R134a and water.  相似文献

A simultaneous visualization and measurement study has been carried out to investigate stable and unstable flow boiling phenomena of deionized water in a single microchannel having a hydraulic diameter of 155 µm with a bottom Pyrex glass wall. Fifteen platinum serpentine microheaters, bonded on the Pyrex glass wall, were used to measure local instantaneous wall temperatures. At low mass flux, a syringe pump was used to drive the subcooled water passing through the microchannel. Stable and unstable flow boiling modes in the single microchannel are identified, and flow pattern maps in terms of heat flux and mass flux as well as in term of exit vapor quality are presented respectively. It was found that unstable flow boiling occurred in the single microchannel if the exit vapor quality xe > 0.013.  相似文献

The drying process of a macrolayer on a 15 mm diameter boiling surface was observed with high speed video in the region of nucleate and of transition boiling close to the critical heat flux (CHF). It was found that the macrolayer rests beneath a large vapor mass. It partially dries in nucleate boiling and completely dries in transition boiling at the detachment of the vapor mass. The macrolayer thickness at CHF and in transition boiling was determined on the basis of the energy balance relation proposed by Katto and Yokoya. The macrolayer thickness at low heat flux was obtained by decreasing CHF with downward-facing heating surfaces and agreed well with the correlation proposed previously by the present authors. The macrolayer thickness in transition boiling with a vertical surface also agrees fairly well with the correlation, when the heat flux at macrolayer formation, given on the nucleate boiling curve, is extrapolated to surface superheat of transition boiling and when the surface temperature at macrolayer formation is equal to a time-averaged value. © 1998 Scripta Technical, Heat Trans Jpn Res, 27(2): 155–168, 1998  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Flow boiling heat transfer in microchannels is used today in many diverse applications. The previous studies addressing the effect of channel size, heat flux, vapor quality, and mass flux on heat transfer during flow boiling are reviewed in the present paper. The relationship between flow characteristics and flow boiling heat transfer was studied experimentally for refrigerant R-C318 at moderate reduced pressures where the contribution of nucleate boiling is decisive. Flow boiling mechanisms were identified using an annular microchannel with transparent outer wall for successive visualization of boiling. The considerable suppression of nucleate boiling heat transfer was observed at transition to annular flow and explained by formation of a liquid flow with thin film and dry spots. A general equation for prediction of two-phase flow boiling heat transfer inside the circular, annular, and rectangular microchannels is proposed and verified using the experimental data. This equation accounts for the nucleate boiling suppression, forced convection, and thin film evaporative heat transfer in the form that allows to distinguish more clearly the contribution of each mechanism of heat transfer under the conditions, when it is predominant. A new approach for prediction of transition to the annular flow is proposed and verified, using the experimental data.  相似文献

Heat transfer characteristics of subcooled flow boiling of FC-72 in a single horizontal circular cross-section microchannel (480 μm i.d., 800 μm o.d., 102 mm long) are presented. Different flow patterns, both in the stable and unstable flow boiling regimes, have been captured using high speed video camera. Data in small, medium, high and very high heat flux cases under small, medium and high mass flux has been presented. Convective heat transfer coefficients in each flow boiling situation have been calculated and presented. Stable flow boiling with alternating bubbly/slug flow, slug/annular flow and annular/mist flow have been observed for heat flux of 150 kW/m2 or higher and mass flux of 1500 kg/m2 s or higher. Back and forth oscillations with flow instabilities have been observed in cases of lower heat and mass fluxes. However, no complete reverse flow in upstream direction has been observed.  相似文献

This paper is the second portion of a two-part study concerning the flow boiling of liquid nitrogen in the micro-tubes with the diameters of 0.531, 0.834, 1.042 and 1.931 mm. The contents include the heat transfer characteristics and critical heat flux (CHF). The local wall temperatures are measured, from which the local heat transfer coefficients are determined. The influences of heat flux, mass flux, pressure and tube diameter on the flow boiling heat transfer coefficients are investigated systematically. Two regions with different heat transfer mechanism can be classified: the nucleate boiling dominated region for low mass quality and the convection evaporation dominated region for high mass quality. For none of the existed correlations can predict the experimental data, a new correlation expressed by Co, Bo, We, Kp and X is proposed. The new correlation yields good fitting for 455 experimental data of 0.531, 0.834 and 1.042 mm micro-tubes with a mean absolute error (MAE) of 13.7%. For 1.931 mm tube, the flow boiling heat transfer characteristics are similar to those of macro-channels, and the heat transfer coefficient can be estimated by Chen correlation. Critical heat flux (CHF) is also measured for the four tubes. Both the CHF and the critical mass quality (CMQ) are higher than those for conventional channels. According to the relationship that CMQ decreases with the mass flux, the mechanism of CHF in micro-tubes is postulated to be the dryout or tear of the thin liquid film near the inner wall. It is found that CHF increases gradually with the decrease of tube diameter.  相似文献

An experimental study has been carried out for estimating surface temperature and heat flux during both a transient heating process from nucleate boiling to film boiling and a cooling process in the reverse direction. Experiments were at atmospheric pressure, and calculations used a newly developed inverse solution. Three different materials, gold, copper, and brass, were employed to make clear the effect of thermal properties on the boiling curves in the transient region including the maximum and minimum heat fluxes. It was determined that the histories of surface temperature and heat flux for the transition boiling region during either heating or cooling process can be tracked well. The experiment shows that hysteresis exists in the heating and cooling processes for the transition region while no hysteresis exists in the nucleate boiling region, except that the maximum heat fluxes reached during the heating and cooling processes are much different. It was found that the characteristics for the heating process are minimally influenced by thermal properties, while characteristics of the cooling process are greatly affected. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We studied the unique characteristics of flow boiling in a single microchannel, including the periodic pressure drop, mass flow rate, and temperature fluctuations, in terms of a long time period. Experiments were conducted using a single horizontal microchannel and deionized water to study boiling instabilities at very small mass and heat flow rate conditions. A Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) rectangular single microchannel had a hydraulic diameter of 103.5 μm and a length of 40 mm. A series of piecewise serpentine platinum microheaters were fabricated on the inner bottom wall of the rectangular microchannel to supply thermal energy to the test fluid. Real-time flow visualizations of the flow pattern inside the microchannel were performed simultaneously with measurements of the experimental parameters. Tests were performed for mass fluxes of 170 and 360 kg/m2 s and heat fluxes of 200–530 kW/m2. The test results showed that the heated wall temperature, pressure drop, and mass flux all fluctuated with a long period and large amplitude. These periodic fluctuations exactly matched the transition of two alternating flow patterns inside the microchannel: a bubbly/slug flow and an elongated slug/semi-annular flow. Therefore, the flow pattern transition instability in the single microchannel caused a cyclic behavior of the wall temperature, pressure drop, and mass flux, and this behavior had a very long period (100–200 s) and large amplitude.  相似文献

This paper presents effects of heating directions on heat transfer performance of R134a flow boiling in micro-channel heat sink.The heat sink has 30 parallel rectangular channels with cross-sectional dimensions of 500μm width 500μm depth and 30mm length.The experimental operation condition ranges of the heat flux and the mass flux were 13.48 to 82.25 W/cm2 and 373.3 to 1244.4 kg/m2s respectively.The vapor quality ranged from 0.07 to 0.93.The heat transfer coefficients of top heating and bottom heating both were up to 25 kW/m2 K.Two dominate transfer mechanisms of nucleate boiling and convection boiling were observed according to boiling curves.The experimental results indicated that the heat transfer coefficient of bottom heating was 13.9% higher than top heating in low heat flux,while in high heat flux,the heat transfer coefficient of bottom heating was 9.9%.higher than the top heating,because bubbles were harder to divorce the heating wall.And a modified correlation was provided to predict heat transfer of top heating.  相似文献

This paper presents an experimental study on the convective boiling heat transfer and the critical heat flux (CHF) of ethanol–water mixtures in a diverging microchannel with artificial cavities. The results show that the boiling heat transfer and the CHF are significantly influenced by the molar fraction (xm) as well as the mass flux. For the single-phase convection region except for the region near the onset of nucleate boiling with temperature overshoot, the single-phase heat transfer coefficient is independent of the wall superheat and increases with a decrease in the molar fraction. After boiling incipience, the two-phase heat transfer coefficient is much higher than that of single-phase convection. The two-phase heat transfer coefficient shows a maximum in the region of bubbly-elongated slug flow and deceases with a further increase in the wall superheat until approaching a condition of CHF, indicating that the heat transfer is mainly dominated by convective boiling. A flow-pattern-based empirical correlation for the two-phase heat transfer coefficient of the flow boiling of ethanol–water mixtures is developed. The overall mean absolute error of the proposed correlation is 15.5%, and more than 82.5% of the experimental data were predicted within a ±25% error band. The CHF increases from xm = 0–0.1, and then decreases rapidly from xm = 0.1–1 at a given mass flux of 175 kg/m2 s. The maximum CHF is reached at xm = 0.1 due to the Marangoni effect, indicating that small additions of ethanol into water could significantly increase the CHF. On the other hand, the CHF increases with increasing the mass flux at a given molar fraction of 0.1. Moreover, the experimental CHF results are compared with existing CHF correlations of flow boiling of the mixtures in a microchannel.  相似文献
