The decline of heavily exploited stocks of large, high quality, food fishes in central Amazonia has led to increasing fishing pressure on smaller taxa, especially the jaraqui (Semiprochilodus spp.). The Prochilodontids, now the most important species to the fisheries, are seined by commercial fishermen during three distinct peridos. At the beginning of the annual floods, schools of mature jaraquis in poor-water tributaries migrate downstream to spawn in the nutrient rich white-water rivers. During these rapid spawning runs, fishing effort is concentrated in the lowermost reaches of the tributaries. After spawning, they return in small groups to feed intensively in the flooded forest of the same tributaries from which they had migrated. This period, of approximately three months, may be considered as a natural closed season to the fisheries. The dispersal migration is most complex and requires distinct fishing strategies. In the middle of the floods large schools of fat jaraqui descend from the tributaries to the white-water rivers again. From there, they move upstream to different poor-water tributaries. As downstream movements are more diffcult to observe, fishermen remain at fixed fishing grounds. This contrasts with the dynamic strategies of the subsequent upstream fishing period which contributes 60 per cent of the annual catches. Fluctuations in catch are shown to reflect year to year variations in abundance, which are linked to the hydrological cycle. Considering that fishing over the stocks of jaraqui has already more than compensated for the deficit in catch of larger species, a combination of increased effort and environmental problems could lead, in a short period to a depletion of one of the most profitable fisheries of central Amazonia. Regulation of the fisheries could benefit from a more reasonable distribution of effort among other migratory illiophagous species which remain unexploited, if the goal of sustainable yield and conservation of these stocks is to be achieved. Reserved waters in large strategic units of at least 300 km along white-water rivers (which is equivalent to the maximum upstream displacement of jaraqui during their dispersal migrations) could also be useful to compensate for the loss of floodplain areas due to deforestaion, river regulation, use of pesticides, and mining. River impoundments in tributaries in central Amazonia may have little effect on jaraqui stocks, as spwning movements are unlikely to be directly interrupted by dams. However, alterations of the hydrological regime may also benefit from simulation of the flood cycle to mitigate potential negative impacts.  相似文献

Two indicators of fish exploitation, catch per unit effort (CPUE) and yield per unit area, were used with surveys of small‐scale fishery landings to compare two African reservoirs that differ in their level of fish exploitation, being high for Selingue Reservoir and low for Manantali Reservoir, both located in West Africa. The heavy exploitation in Selingue Reservoir induced a decline in catches per fishing trip (9.5 kg trip?1), whereas the catch remained high at Manantali Reservoir (17.0 kg trip?1). Moreover, the annual fish yield per unit area was lower for Manantali Reservoir (19 kg ha?1) than for Selingue Reservoir (79 kg ha?1). There was no relationship between the Morphoedaphic Index and catches for the two reservoirs. Rather, only the fishing effort and annual water‐level variations defined the reservoir fish yields. Based on the results of the present study, it appears that CPUE and fish yield per unit area represent simple and robust indicators for describing the impacts of fishing intensity in aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

A comprehensive analysis of the efficiency of different fishing gear in capturing Cyprinidae (major carp) species in Kaptai Reservoir, Bangladesh, was conducted. The catch per unit effort (CPUE) data were collected during a 1‐year survey, covering a total of 493 independent fishing units spread across the four major fishing grounds of the reservoir. The study examines the CPUE and catch composition between months and study sites, and the effects of reservoir water level fluctuations, gear diversity and fish distribution patterns on the fish catches. The mean CPUE for all gear ranged between 2.91 and 30.86 kg unit?1 day?1. Analysis of variance showed significant differences among the fishing gear types. The CPUE differed significantly between months for lift nets, large‐meshed (LM) gill nets, cluster hooks and hand lines. None of the fishing gear exhibited significant differences between sites except for cluster hooks. The CPUE of small‐meshed (SM) seine nets was significantly higher than that of other gear. The reasons for such differences in the fish catches were identified as the choice of fishing places, the net sizes, the number of hooks, lures and baits, water turbidity, wind, waves and rainfall. The CPUE indices for lift nets showed significant variation between months for the Cyprinidae species. A significant variation in catch at the different sites was found for all nets, except SM seine nets. The contribution of the Cyprinidae species showed significant differences between sites only for hand lines. The coefficient of variation of CPUE for fishing nets did not vary much more than 55% (lift net), whereas the highest variation of 49% was recorded for hand lines among the hooks and line. Higher reservoir water levels were followed by reduced CPUEs for the Cyprinidae species and vice versa, whereas the highest water levels corresponded to the higher CPUE for the Clupeidae species.  相似文献

The Upper Victoria Nile (UVN) flows from Lake Victoria into Lake Kyoga, spanning 117 km and supports a diverse aquatic fauna that sustains livelihoods of riverside communities. The UVN is habitat to critically endangered (Labeo victorianus), near threatened (Oreochromis variabilis and Oreochromis esculentus), and rare species (Neochromis simotes). Four hydropower dams were built on the UVN to provide energy for industrial and socioeconomic development, notwithstanding consequential environmental and socioeconomic impacts. The impacts of Bujagali hydropower (BHP) dam on fisheries and livelihoods were assessed biannually (April and September) from 2006 to 2019, using fishing effort, species abundance, catch composition, and economic beach revenue at upstream, mid-reservoir, and downstream transects. The fishing boats increased from 31 in 2009 to 293 in 2019 and fishers from 83 to 500 over the monitoring period. Maximum annual catch of 461.4 t was recorded in 2014 and lowest of 54.2 t in 2009. In all transects, Protopterus aethiopicus and Labeo victorianus were least in the commercial catches and the use of Mormyrus kannume juveniles as bait for Nile perch fishery corresponded with increased catches from 3.3 t in 2009 to 148.2 t in 2019. Women were mostly engaged in post-harvest activities such as fish drying, smoking, and food vending. These observations suggest coupling effects of the hydropower dam and ineffective fisheries management. The harvest of M. kannume wild stocks for bait should be banned and research in possible domestication of the species undertaken. There is a need to strengthen fisheries enforcement to curb illegal effort and overexploitation and to implement conservation actions to mitigate potential biodiversity impacts from the hydropower dam operations.  相似文献

Gillnet selectivity is crucial for the effective and sustainable management of fisheries. However, there is inadequate information on gillnet selectivity for commercially important species in Tono Reservoir. To facilitate the sustainable exploitation of fish species, this study was conducted to estimate the selectivity parameters of commonly used monofilament gillnets for commercially important fish species in Tono Reservoir from January 2015 to June 2016. Two common nylon monofilament gillnets used by fishermen in Tono Reservoir with stretched mesh sizes 5 and 7 cm and equal dimensions were placed in the same fishing area and retrieved within 12 h. The fish catches were assessed, and selectivity parameters for Sarotherodon galilaeus, Oreochromis niloticus, Coptodon zillii, Clarias gariepinus and Auchenoglanis occidentalis were estimated using the Holt model. The catch per unit effort of the two gillnets exhibited no significant difference. The optimum total lengths of capture of four fish species excluding C. zillii ranged from 13.53 to 25.43 cm for the 5 cm gillnet, and 18.95 to 35.60 cm for the 7 cm gillnet. Common selection factors varied from 2.71 to 5.09. The mean total length at first sexual maturity for all five fish species ranged from 8.60 to 28.86 cm. Both the 5 and 7 cm gillnets were found to be inappropriate for use in the reservoir. Accordingly, their use should be discouraged to protect juvenile fish so that the sustainable exploitation and conservation of fish species in this multispecies fishery can be achieved.  相似文献

为了分析三峡水库蓄水后的水体质量变化情况,选取水库干流全程和主要支流典型断面进行了水质监测。水库蓄水期间水质分析的结果表明:库区干流水质较好且总体稳定,但支流水质总体较差,支流回水区各断面水质以Ⅳ类为主,主要超标因子为总磷,与蓄水前相比,支流水质明显下降,大部分处于中营养或富营养状况,部分支流回水区的局部河段发生了水华。水质分析结果为针对性地制定三峡水库水环境保护措施奠定了基础。  相似文献

Interannual variation in yield per species from a freshwater reservoir in Bangladesh was analysed by using long‐term landing data. Each species was categorized according to characteristics in interannual yield variation. The characteristics were defined with respect to size of the interannual variation in terms of absolute and relative variation around the mean yield and long‐term trends in catch levels. Annual variation was directly (t18 = 7.84; P < 0.01) related to the yield and can serve as a good indication of the status of the fishery when catches are low. The target fish, Indian major carps (IMC) Labeo rohita, Labeo calbasu, Catla catla and Cirrhinus mrigala, showed large variation in annual yield. This might have occurred because of variation in annual recruitment. Illegal use of gears is mostly related to variation in year class strength, and is assumed to be the most important source of change of stock variation. An increase in catch rate was recorded for Corica soborna. Such a stable combination may only be possible for a certain period without a long‐term trend. Trends in the yield rate of the major fish category for three decades reveal a sharp decline in the catch of IMC. In contrast, small clupeid‐like C. soborna have the highest yield rate. Fishing gears can play a crucial role in this fishery. Fisheries managers must always be alert when issuing fishing licenses and on the control on gears. The conclusion is that the IMC fishery of Kaptai Reservoir is an overexploited fish stock. In this fishery, the same gears are usually employed indiscriminately for different species and size classes. To stabilize the fishery, the existing policy needs to be strengthened and more effectively implemented. Also, some fishing gears and traps need to be restricted. An effective stock protection policy is suggested. Further study on catch size of individual species is essential prior to the development and implementation of any management scheme.  相似文献

Sport fishing censuses were conducted during 1972 and 1973 at the Point Beach Nuclear Plant on Lake Michigan (Two Rivers, Wisconsin). The objectives of this study were to describe the fishery at a typical shoreline thermal discharge into the upper Great Lakes and to make comparisons with reference fisheries in unheated areas.Extensive sport fishing at this power plant resulted in a relatively large catch of trout (4 species) and sporadic catches of salmon and non-salmonid species. Species composition of the catch and catch per-unit-effort varied daily and seasonally and generally reflected trends in reference fisheries. A comparison between years showed increased fishing effort, total catch, and proportion of trout in 1973, while success (catch-per-unit-effort) decreased. Despite this heavy fishing pressure, catch-per-unit-effort was generally higher at Point Beach than in reference shoreline fisheries.The economic value of thermal discharge fisheries on Lake Michigan is estimated using available value and expenditure data.  相似文献

The degraded state of the fragile ecosystem of Chilika Lake, located on the east coast of India, was undergoing restoration through an effective hydrological intervention during the year 2000. Studies on the lake’s hydrobiology and fisheries for the period of 7 years before and 7 years after the hydrological intervention indicated a rapid recovery of the lake fishery immediately after opening of the new lake mouth, with a sixfold increase in the average annual fish landings. During 2000–2001 to 2006–2007, the average fisheries output (11 051.3 t), catch per unit effort (6.2 kg boat?1 day?1), the economic valuation of the average annual catch (637 million rupees) and productivity (11.97 t km?2) exhibited dramatic increases of 498%, 464%, 1177% and 498.5%, respectively, compared with the 7‐year pre‐intervention data. Multivariate statistical analysis inferred that most of the lake’s environmental variables are strongly associated with salinity factor, which seems to have governed the lake ecology. The salinity dynamics of the lake are governed by both freshwater inflows and seawater ingress through the new artificial lake mouth. Correlation analysis indicated that salinity was positively correlated with prawn catch (R2 = 0.542; d.f. = 25; P < 0.01), crab catch (R2 = 0.628; d.f. = 25; P < 0.001) and fish catch (R2 = 0.476; d.f. = 25, P < 0.05). The average increase in the salinity regime (43.8%) for the lake during the post‐hydrological intervention period, compared with the pre‐hydrological intervention period, appears to have positively impacted the fish, prawn and mud crab catches. A gradual decrease in total fisheries output since 2005–2006, however, was attributed mainly to a continuing increase in destructive fishing practices in the absence of any conservation and regulatory measures for fishing, and large‐scale collection of shrimp juveniles from the outer channel for shrimp aquaculture. Thus, carefully planned conservation and regulation measures must be ensured, with active participation of local communities during this early phase of lake restoration. In the absence of such measures, the present scenario of fisheries enhancement might not be sustained over the long term.  相似文献

With the impoundment of the Three Gorges Reservoir, algal blooms have been found in some tributaries. In this study, according to the theoretical analysis of the eutrophication mechanismin a river-type reservoir tributary, a one-dimensional eutrophication model was developed for the Xiangxi River tributary of the Three Gorges Reservoir, and the influence of hydrodynamic conditions on the primary growth rate of algae was investigated. Furthermore, numericalpredictions of hydraulic variables and eutrophication factors, such as the concentration distribution of TP, TN, and Chl-a in the spatial and temporal domains, were carded out. Comparison of computation results of TP, TN, and Chl-a concentrations along the river in the spring of 2005 with experimental data demonstrates the validity of the model. The agreement between the computation results and the experimental data of TP and TN concentrations is better than the agreement between those of Chl-a concentration. The simulated results also show that the Chl-a concentration downstream is much higher than that in the upstream tributary, which potentially indicates the outbreak of algae in this area. Therefore, this study provides a feasible method of accurately predicting the state of eutrophication in river-type reservoirs and their tributaries.  相似文献

This study reports on the population parameters, catch distribution and feeding ecology of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) from bottom trawls and commercial catches obtained in the Kenyan portion of Lake Victoria during 1997–2006. The population parameters were analysed using the FAO‐ICLARM stock assessment tool (FISAT). The fish biomass and the food ingested by the fish were estimated using the swept area and point methods, respectively. Immature fish comprised ≈70% of the total fish population. The asymptotic length, maximum weight, maximum age, exploitation rate (E) and length at 50% maturity of Nile tilapia have decreased, whereas the growth curvature and fishing mortality have increased. The commercial catches increased from 13.93 t in 1997, to 23.70 t in 1999, decreasing thereafter to 18.73 t in 2005. The bottom trawl catches increased from 46.90 kg ha?1 in 1997, to 401.48 kg ha?1 in 2000, decreasing thereafter to 15.57 kg ha?1 in 2006. The major food items ingested by the fish were algae, insects and other fish. Population parameters, and the catch and diet of O. niloticus, have changed over the years in Lake Victoria. The population characteristics suggest a population under stress, attributable to intense catch exploitation. Even under intense exploitation (E = 0.68), however, the mature fish constituted ≈30% of the population. The commercial catches are still high, indicating a very resilient fishery. Nevertheless, despite this resilience, the future of Oreochromis fishery is threatened by increased fishing capacity in the lake, and there is need to re‐evaluate the effectiveness of current fishery management measures, with the goal of possibly adopting new measures. Enactment of new fishery policies also should provide for co‐management to enhance the management process. Furthermore, there is a need to reduce fishing capacity and illegal fishing methods, and to seek alternative livelihoods for lake fishers and other stakeholders.  相似文献

Major changes to local river habitats, after impoundment, are expected to restrict the reproductive activity of fishes with migratory strategies, although the changes are not expected to have relevant effects on fishes with other strategies. The reproductive activity of fishes with different reproductive strategies was evaluated along a longitudinal gradient before, and after, the formation of a reservoir on the Tocantins River (Tocantins State, Brazil). Samples were collected at six sites distributed along 80‐km stretch of the reservoir (R1 to R6 in the upstream–downstream direction) before and after the impoundment. The highest mean values of the reproductive activity index (RAI), considering all species in the river phase, were recorded for the intermediate segments (R4). The reproductive activity was classified as intense at the two sites located further upstream (R2 and R1). The highest mean RAI value after impoundment was observed for the site further upstream (R1). The reproductive activity was classified as intense, however, at every site, except for R6. Regardless of the reproductive strategy, mean RAI values were higher in this phase at site R1, particularly for long‐distance migratory species (LDM). The most lacustrine area (R6) was only relevant for the group of species with parental care. For non‐long‐distance migratory species, without parental care, the reproductive activity was intense at every site, except for R6. Overall, after the impoundment, the fish species tended to seek more lotic environments to spawn, including the riverine zone of the reservoir and side tributaries, regardless of the reproductive strategy. The results of this study provide evidence that impoundments affect the reproduction of the fish, independent of the reproductive strategy, although the intensity of the effect is different for each group.  相似文献

The Governments of the Provinces located in Patagonia, Argentina, promote the intensive breeding of salmonids in the Andean Patagonian region. Although annual production is low (450 ton ha–1 year–1), some effects are significant. Waste produced by salmonid breeding (feed losses, faeces and excretion) increases nutrient and organic matter concentrations, which cause modifications of water quality, sediments and biota. A consequent risk is the elevation of eutrophication levels. Possible changes in water composition, sediments, algae and wild fish populations were studied. Sites affected by fish farming showed increased nutrient concentration, and phytoplankton and periphyton biomass. Chlorophyll a was similar at both sites (affected and unaffected by fish farm sites). Sediments clearly reflect fish farm waste inputs: total phosphorus and organic matter increased 12‐fold and fourfold, respectively. The species present in the gill‐net catches were the autochthonous Percichthys trucha, Odontesthes hatcheri, Diplomystes viedmensis, and the introduced salmonids Oncorhynchus mykiss, Salmo trutta, Salmo salar sebago and Salvelinus fontinalis. About 50% of the total catch was salmonids. A major portion of the catch per unit weight was composed of rainbow trout, followed by perch. The catch per unit weight obtained for this reservoir agrees with the range of values previously determined ( Quiros 1990 ) for Patagonian reservoirs. Compared with previous studies by Freyre et al. (1991) , a variation in catch composition exists. This consists mainly of an increase in the numbers and condition of O. mykiss and a decrease in P. trucha. Presence of fish that escaped from hatcheries, recognizable by their eroded fins, was observed; particularly in a sampling station near the fish cage systems. Variations in catches could be caused by cyclical changes in fish populations ( Wooton 1991 ), by direct and indirect effects of intensive fish farming, or by a combination of both events, and can only be understood through long‐term studies of catch variation.  相似文献

The Burgomillodo Dam, located in the middle Rio Duraton (north Spain, Duero Basin), has created a small eutrophic reservoir with a capacity of 15 × 106 m 3 and a maximum depth of 40m. Burgomillodo Reservoir is solely used for producing hydroelectric power. The regulated flow pattern of hypolimnial waters is characterized by higher daytime flows than those by night, with low flows at weekends all the year round. The environmental impact generated by this hydropower scheme on the river downstream was assessed by comparing physiochemical characteristics and aquatic communities of an upstream site (reference station) with those of three downstream stations, which were located 0–2, 2–5, and 7–6 km below the dam. Water temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen were significantly lower downstream from the reservoir. Hardness, alkalinity, suspended inorganic matter, and conductivity had reduced annual variability below the dam. Photosynthetic activity was directly involved in the recovery of dissolved oxygen and pH values. Species richness and abundance of macrophytes increased just below the dam. Macrobenthic and fish communities were composed of higher numbers of potamic species. Number of taxa, density, biomass, and diversity were higher at the reference site, recovering their values as the distance below the reservoir increased. Macrobenthic trophic structure was changed by an increase in predators and filter feeders and a decrease in shredders. Environmental impact values for the macrobenthic community living just below the dam were higher than those for the fish community. It is concluded that the main physiochemical factors involved in environmental impacts were dissolved oxygen deficit and short-term flow fluctuations for the macrobenthic community, and oxygen deficit for the fish fauna. Benthic macroinvertebrates appear to be the best aquatic organisms for detecting changes and for reflecting the spatial recovery of environmental conditions.  相似文献

The food webs for three Sri Lankan reservoirs, Minneriya (ancient and shallow), Udawalawe (young and shallow) and Victoria (young and deep), were compared. The species richness of the fish communities was highest in Minneriya (30 species), intermediate in Udawalawe (21 species) and lowest in Victoria (18 species). The fish species belonged to 11 families, with Cyprinidae dominating the community in terms of both abundance and species richness. The daily quantity of food consumed per fish species was used to distinguish weak from strong trophic interactions in these food webs. The fish community consumption pattern was characterized by a few strong interactions and many weak ones. The number of major consumers (i.e. contributing >5% of the total fish community consumption) for each reservoir was small and similar for all three reservoirs. Dawkinsia singhala and Amblypharyngodon melettinus were the two major consumers in all three reservoir food webs. Puntius chola was a major consumer in Minneriya and Victoria, although not in Udawalawe, where it fed less on detritus than for the other two food webs. The fish community fed mainly at the bottom of the food web, primarily on algae, macrophytes and detritus in all three reservoirs, with very little piscivory occurring. The average food‐web length was measured as the mean trophic index weighted for the consumption rates of the various fish populations that together comprised the fish community. The average food‐web length in these three Sri Lankan reservoirs relatively short, compared with most other tropical lake/reservoir food webs in Asia and Africa for which relevant data were available. Furthermore, traditionally unexploited species (Oreochromis mossambicus; O. niloticus), in contrast to species of commercial fisheries interest, are major role players in the trophic dynamics of reservoir ecosystems. Thus, based on this study, the potential of their exploitation should be considered in the management of reservoir fisheries.  相似文献

During the period February to June 2020, heavy rainfall caused increases in levels and flooding in many lakes in East Africa. This coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic. These calamities affected ecosystems and livelihoods, especially of fishers who depend on fisheries as their only source of livelihood. This study examined the effects of COVID-19 and flooding on the major inland capture fisheries in Kenya to illustrate the effect of such calamities on vulnerable communities to guide interventions. Socioeconomic data were collected across the fish value chains during the peak of COVID-19 pandemic and flooding in Kenya from May to early June 2020. The measures put in place to contain COVID-19 pandemic notably dusk to dawn curfew (66%) and lock-downs (28%) in major cities that act as main fish markets were cited as the main factors that influenced fishing and fishing trade. Negative consequences reported included livelihood losses from the COVID-19 pandemic. Reduced fishing time and trips as well as a decline in consumables such as boat fuel resulted in low fish catches. Although COVID-19 pandemic affected livelihoods, the fish stocks benefited from reduction in fishing effort. Similarly flooding led to livelihood and material losses but positively impacted on stocks through expansion of fish breeding and nursery areas. The respondents recommended that governments should have disaster preparedness programs in place to address such calamities. There is also need for more detailed research on calamities that are increasing in frequency to provide information and data to guide policy and interventions.  相似文献

The first survey data on the fisheries in Lake Peipsi were collected by natural scientist Karl Ernst von Baer as a result of the world's first special fishery expedition in 1851–1852. In the current study, all available numerical datasets on fishing in Lake Peipsi from 1851 to 2018 have been drawn together in order to analyse the long-term changes in the lake’s fish assemblages. As the study indicates, the overexploitation, catching of juvenile fish and predator–prey imbalance have been common problems associated with fisheries in Lake Peipsi for the last two centuries. Similar to many inland waterbodies worldwide, total catch of fish from Lake Peipsi has decreased about four times since the mid-19th century, and the catch of lake (dwarf) smelt, a previously dominant species, has periodically fluctuated with long-term gradual reduction. The decline of cool-water fish, such as vendace, burbot and Peipsi whitefish during the last two centuries, and the domination of Eurasian perch, common bream and pike-perch in the catches of the last 20 years mark considerable structural shifts in fish assemblages. Of the multiple stressors (e.g., nutrient enrichment, increased water temperature, overfishing) triggering shifts in fish assemblages, the impact of climate warming, especially extreme weather events such as heatwaves, seems to be the strongest during the last three decades. However, none of the fish species have completely disappeared from the lake during the last century although the share of cool-water fish in the total catch has declined about tenfold since the 1930s.  相似文献
