Much of human exposure to ambient ozone and ozone reaction byproducts occurs inside buildings. However, there are currently no experimental data on the ability of ozone to penetrate through building envelopes and into residences. This paper presents a method to determine the penetration factor for ozone in buildings, and applies it in an unoccupied test house and seven single-family residences. The mean (±SD) ozone penetration factor was measured as 0.79 ± 0.13 in the eight homes using this method, ranging from 0.62 ± 0.09 to 1.02 ± 0.15. An analysis of tests across the homes revealed that ozone penetration was significantly higher in homes with more painted wood envelope materials, homes with larger air leakage exponents from fan pressurization tests, and older homes. The test method utilizes a large calibrated fan to elevate air exchange rates and steady-state indoor ozone concentrations to levels that can be accurately measured, so there is a potential for overpredicting ozone penetration factors. However, evidence suggests that this bias is likely small in most of the homes, and, even if a bias exists, the measured ozone penetration factors were lower than the usual assumption of unity in seven of the eight tested homes.  相似文献

A water vapor interference in ozone measurements by UV absorption was investigated using four different ozone monitors (TEI models 49 and 49C, Dasibi model 1003-AH, and a 2B Technologies model 202 prototype). In the extreme case of step changes between 0 and 90% relative humidity (RH), a large interference in the range of tens to hundreds of ppbv was found for all instruments tested, with the magnitude and sign depending on the manufacturer and model. Considering that water vapor does not absorb at the wavelength of the Hg lamp (253.7 nm) used in these instruments, another explanation is required. Based on experimental evidence and theoretical considerations, we conclude that the water vapor interference is caused by humidity effects on the transmission of uncollimated UV light through the detection cell. The ozone scrubber acts as a water reservoir, either adding or removing water from the air sample, thereby modulating the detector signal and producing a positive or negative offset. It was found for the 2B Technologies ozone monitor that use of a 1-m length of Nafion tubing just prior to the entrance to the detection cell reduces the water vapor interference to negligible levels (+/- 2 ppbv for step changes between 0 and 90% RH) while quantitatively passing ozone.  相似文献

Specific UV absorbance (SUVA) is defined as the UV absorbance of a water sample at a given wavelength normalized for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration. Our data indicate that SUVA, determined at 254 nm, is strongly correlated with percent aromaticity as determined by 13C NMR for 13 organic matter isolates obtained from a variety of aquatic environments. SUVA, therefore, is shown to be a useful parameter for estimating the dissolved aromatic carbon content in aquatic systems. Experiments involving the reactivity of DOC with chlorine and tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH), however, show a wide range of reactivity for samples with similar SUVA values. These results indicate that, while SUVA measurements are good predictors of general chemical characteristics of DOC, they do not provide information about reactivity of DOC derived from different types of source materials. Sample pH, nitrate, and iron were found to influence SUVA measurements.  相似文献

采用气相色谱法-质谱法(GC-MS)对经臭氧与紫外复合处理和未经处理的枸杞挥发性成分进行提取分析,并确定各挥发性成分的相对含量。从未经处理的枸杞鉴定出46种挥发性化合物,占色谱流出组分总含量的64.02%;经臭氧与紫外复合处理的枸杞中,鉴定出51种挥发性化合物,占色谱流出组分总含量的70.73%,多类挥发性成分中的数量和相对含量均增加,其功能性成分中黄酮含量稍有提高,多糖、类胡萝卜素的含量有不同程度的下降。  相似文献

Increased interest in blueberries due to their nutritional and health benefits has led to an increase in consumption. However, blueberries are consumed mostly raw or minimally processed and are susceptible to microbial contamination like other type of fresh produce. This study was, therefore, undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of electrostatic spray of electrolyzed oxidizing (EO) water, UV light, ozone, and a combination of ozone and UV light in killing Escherichia coli O157:H7 on blueberries. A 5-strain mixture of E. coli O157:H7 were inoculated on the calyx and skin of blueberries and then subjected to the treatments. Electrostatic EO water spray reduced initial populations of E. coli O157:H7 by only 0.13 to 0.24 log CFU/g and 0.88 to 1.10 log CFU/g on calyx and skin of blueberries, respectively. Ozone treatment with 4000 mg/L reduced E. coli O157:H7 by only 0.66 and 0.72 log CFU/g on calyx and skin of blueberries, respectively. UV light at 20 mW/cm2 for 10 min was the most promising single technology and achieved 2.14 and greater than 4.05 log reductions of E. coli O157:H7 on the calyx and skin of blueberries, respectively. The combination treatment of 1 min ozone and followed by a 2 min UV achieved more than 1 and 2 log additional reductions on blueberry calyx than UV or ozone alone, respectively. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Outbreaks of foodborne illnesses have been associated with consumption of fresh produce. Many methods for removing pathogens as well as minimizing their effect on quality of treated produce have been investigated. UV technology and its combination with ozone used in this study to inactive E. coli O157:H7 on blueberries was found effective. Results from this study may help producers and processors in developing hurdle technologies for the delivery of safer blueberries to consumers.  相似文献

Improving air quality by reducing ambient ozone (O(3)) will likely lower O(3) concentrations throughout the troposphere and increase the transmission of solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation to the surface. The changes in surface UV radiation between two control scenarios (nominally 84 and 70 ppb O(3) for summer 2020) in the Eastern two-thirds of the contiguous U.S. are estimated, using tropospheric O(3) profiles calculated with a chemistry-transport model (Community Multi-Scale Air Quality, CMAQ) as inputs to a detailed model of the transfer of solar radiation through the atmosphere (tropospheric ultraviolet-visible, TUV) for clear skies, weighed for the wavelengths known to induce sunburn and skin cancer. Because the incremental emission controls differ according to region, strong spatial variability in O(3) reductions and in corresponding UV radiation increments is seen. The geographically averaged UV increase is 0.11 ± 0.03%, whereas the population-weighted increase is larger, 0.19 ± 0.06%, because O(3) reductions are greater in more densely populated regions. These relative increments in exposure are non-negligible given the already high incidence of UV-related health effects, but are lower by an order of magnitude or more than previous estimates.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the association between ambient temperature and humidity, vaginal temperature, and automated activity monitoring in synchronized cows. Lactating Holstein cows (n = 641; 41.5 ± 9.4 kg of milk/d) were fitted with leg-mounted pedometers, resulting in 843 evaluated activity episodes of estrus. Vaginal temperature was monitored using thermometers attached to an intravaginal device as part of a timed artificial insemination (TAI) protocol; vaginal temperature was recorded every 10 min for 3 d. Ambient temperature and relative humidity were monitored using an external thermometer placed in the center of each pen. Milk production and body condition score (BCS) data were collected at the time of thermometer insertion. All statistical analysis was performed in R (https://www.r-project.org/) using Pearson correlation, analysis of variance, and logistic regression. Heat stress was calculated based on the percentage of time the cow spent with a vaginal temperature ≥39.1°C (PCT39) 9 to 11 d before TAI, and was classified as high (≥22.9%) or low (<22.9%). The mean vaginal temperature was 38.9 ± 0.2°C, and the mean maximum and minimum vaginal temperatures were 39.7 ± 0.5°C and 38.0 ± 0.8°C, respectively, with an average amplitude of 1.71 ± 0.9°C. Mean relative increase (RI) of estrus walking activity was 237.0 ± 160%. Animals with low BCS had a lower RI compared with cows with medium BCS (260.31 ± 17.45% vs. 296.42 ± 6.62%). Cows in early lactation showed lower RI compared with mid- and late-lactation animals (265.40 ± 9.90% vs. 288.36 ± 11.58% vs. 295.75 ± 11.29% for early, mid, and late lactation, respectively). Temperature-humidity index (THI) conditions categorized as low (THI ≤65) were associated with greater RI compared with medium (>65 to <70) and high THI (≥70). We detected no significant effect of PCT39 or milk production on RI, whereas parity exhibited a tendency. Cows that displayed greater RI at estrus had greater pregnancies per artificial insemination (P/AI) than cows with low RI (27 vs. 20%) or no RI (27 vs. 12%). Primiparous cows had greater P/AI than multiparous cows (27 vs. 20%), and cows in early and mid lactation had improved P/AI than those in late lactation (26 vs. 22 vs. 16% for early, mid, and late lactation, respectively). An interaction was observed between PCT39 and THI on P/AI, where a subpopulation of cows with high PCT39 had decreased P/AI under high THI conditions, but no differences in P/AI were observed for high PCT39 cows under medium or low THI conditions (13 vs. 24 vs. 26%). Future research should aim to refine variables related to hyperthermia and to understand the effects of body temperature on estrus expression and pregnancy rates.  相似文献

The effect of ultraviolet irradiation combined with chitosan coating on fresh jujube under ambient temperature was investigated. In the first period, the jujubes were irradiated for 4, 6, 8, 10 min at 253.7 nm ultraviolet, or coated with 1%, 1.5%, 2% and 2.5% of chitosan, respectively. In the second period, the jujubes were firstly irradiated 6 min, and then coated with 1.5% of chitosan. The result showed that combined treatment could reduce decay incidence of jujubes and restrain increase of respiration rate, weight loss, malonaldehyde content and electrolyte leakage of jujubes. Furthermore, the activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase were maintained at higher level, and the decrease of ascorbic acid and chlorophyll was restricted. The present data indicated that treating post-harvest jujubes with ultraviolet irradiation combined with chitosan coating was an effective method, and might be considered in commercial application for preservation of postharvest fruit.  相似文献
