Top-k queries on large multi-attribute data sets are fundamental operations in information retrieval and ranking applications. In this article, we initiate research on the anytime behavior of top-k algorithms on exact and fuzzy data. In particular, given specific top-k algorithms (TA and TA-Sorted) we are interested in studying their progress toward identification of the correct result at any point during the algorithms’ execution. We adopt a probabilistic approach where we seek to report at any point of operation of the algorithm the confidence that the top-k result has been identified. Such a functionality can be a valuable asset when one is interested in reducing the runtime cost of top-k computations. We present a thorough experimental evaluation to validate our techniques using both synthetic and real data sets.

Ranking queries, also known as top-k queries, produce results that are ordered on some computed score. Typically, these queries involve joins, where users are usually interested only in the top-k join results. Top-k queries are dominant in many emerging applications, e.g., multimedia retrieval by content, Web databases, data mining, middlewares, and most information retrieval applications. Current relational query processors do not handle ranking queries efficiently, especially when joins are involved. In this paper, we address supporting top-k join queries in relational query processors. We introduce a new rank-join algorithm that makes use of the individual orders of its inputs to produce join results ordered on a user-specified scoring function. The idea is to rank the join results progressively during the join operation. We introduce two physical query operators based on variants of ripple join that implement the rank-join algorithm. The operators are nonblocking and can be integrated into pipelined execution plans. We also propose an efficient heuristic designed to optimize a top-k join query by choosing the best join order. We address several practical issues and optimization heuristics to integrate the new join operators in practical query processors. We implement the new operators inside a prototype database engine based on PREDATOR. The experimental evaluation of our approach compares recent algorithms for joining ranked inputs and shows superior performance.Received: 23 December 2003, Accepted: 31 March 2004, Published online: 12 August 2004Edited by: S. Multi-dimensional top-k dominating queries
The top-k dominating query returns k data objects which dominate the highest number of objects in a dataset. This query is an important tool for decision support since it provides data analysts an intuitive way for finding significant objects. In addition, it combines the advantages of top-k and skyline queries without sharing their disadvantages: (i) the output size can be controlled, (ii) no ranking functions need to be specified by users, and (iii) the result is independent of the scales at different dimensions. Despite their importance, top-k dominating queries have not received adequate attention from the research community. This paper is an extensive study on the evaluation of top-k dominating queries. First, we propose a set of algorithms that apply on indexed multi-dimensional data. Second, we investigate query evaluation on data that are not indexed. Finally, we study a relaxed variant of the query which considers dominance in dimensional subspaces. Experiments using synthetic and real datasets demonstrate that our algorithms significantly outperform a previous skyline-based approach. We also illustrate the applicability of this multi-dimensional analysis query by studying the meaningfulness of its results on real data.

Finding typical instances is an effective approach to understand and analyze large data sets. In this paper, we apply the idea of typicality analysis from psychology and cognitive science to database query answering, and study the novel problem of answering top-k typicality queries. We model typicality in large data sets systematically. Three types of top-k typicality queries are formulated. To answer questions like “Who are the top-k most typical NBA players?”, the measure of simple typicality is developed. To answer questions like “Who are the top-k most typical guards distinguishing guards from other players?”, the notion of discriminative typicality is proposed. Moreover, to answer questions like “Who are the best k typical guards in whole representing different types of guards?”, the notion of representative typicality is used. Computing the exact answer to a top-k typicality query requires quadratic time which is often too costly for online query answering on large databases. We develop a series of approximation methods for various situations: (1) the randomized tournament algorithm has linear complexity though it does not provide a theoretical guarantee on the quality of the answers; (2) the direct local typicality approximation using VP-trees provides an approximation quality guarantee; (3) a local typicality tree data structure can be exploited to index a large set of objects. Then, typicality queries can be answered efficiently with quality guarantees by a tournament method based on a Local Typicality Tree. An extensive performance study using two real data sets and a series of synthetic data sets clearly shows that top-k typicality queries are meaningful and our methods are practical.

We study here fundamental issues involved in top-k query evaluation in probabilistic databases. We consider simple probabilistic databases in which probabilities are associated with individual tuples, and general probabilistic databases in which, additionally, exclusivity relationships between tuples can be represented. In contrast to other recent research in this area, we do not limit ourselves to injective scoring functions. We formulate three intuitive postulates for the semantics of top-k queries in probabilistic databases, and introduce a new semantics, Global-Topk, that satisfies those postulates to a large degree. We also show how to evaluate queries under the Global-Topk semantics. For simple databases we design dynamic-programming based algorithms. For general databases we show polynomial-time reductions to the simple cases, and provide effective heuristics to speed up the computation in practice. For example, we demonstrate that for a fixed k the time complexity of top-k query evaluation is as low as linear, under the assumption that probabilistic databases are simple and scoring functions are injective.

In this paper, we present novel multi-criteria query optimization techniques for performing query optimization in databases, such as multimedia and web databases, which rely on imperfect access mechanisms and top-k predicates. We present an optimization model that (1) takes into account different binding patterns associated with query predicates, (2) considers the variations in the expected query result sizes as a function of query execution plans, and (3) considers the expected result qualities of the execution orders. We address the complexity and the well-known NP-complete nature of the query optimization problem by adaptively reducing the granularity of the search space. For this purpose, unlike the data histograms which capture the data distribution, we propose opt-histograms that capture the distribution of sub-query-plan values over many optimization tasks.

Searching XML data with a structured XML query can improve the precision of results compared with a keyword search. However, the structural heterogeneity of the large number of XML data sources makes it difficult to answer the structured query exactly. As such, query relaxation is necessary. Previous work on XML query relaxation poses the problem of unnecessary computation of a big number of unqualified relaxed queries. To address this issue, we propose an adaptive relaxation approach which relaxes a query against different data sources differently based on their conformed schemas. In this paper, we present a set of techniques that supports this approach, which includes schema-aware relaxation rules for relaxing a query adaptively, a weighted model for ranking relaxed queries, and algorithms for adaptive relaxation of a query and top-k query processing. We discuss results from a comprehensive set of experiments that show the effectiveness and the efficiency of our approach.

Keyword Search Over Relational Databases (KSORD) enables casual or Web users easily access databases through free-form keyword queries. Improving the performance of KSORD systems is a critical issue in this area. In this paper, a new approach CLASCN (Classification, Learning And Selection of Candidate Network) is developed to efficiently perform top-κ keyword queries in schema-graph-based online KSORD systems. In this approach, the Candidate Networks (CNs) from trained keyword queries or executed user queries are classified and stored in the databases, and top-κ results from the CNs are learned for constructing CN Language Models (CNLMs). The CNLMs are used to compute the similarity scores between a new user query and the CNs from the query. The CNs with relatively large similarity score, which are the most promising ones to produce top-κ results, will be selected and performed. Currently, CLASCN is only applicable for past queries and New All-keyword-Used (NAU) queries which are frequently submitted queries. Extensive experiments also show the efficiency and effectiveness of our CLASCN approach.

The top-k query is employed in a wide range of applications to generate a ranked list of data that have the highest aggregate scores over certain attributes. As the pool of attributes for selection by individual queries may be large, the data are indexed with per-attribute sorted lists, and a threshold algorithm (TA) is applied on the lists involved in each query. The TA executes in two phases—find a cut-off threshold for the top-k result scores, then evaluate all the records that could score above the threshold. In this paper, we focus on exact top-k queries that involve monotonic linear scoring functions over disk-resident sorted lists. We introduce a model for estimating the depths to which each sorted list needs to be processed in the two phases, so that (most of) the required records can be fetched efficiently through sequential or batched I/Os. We also devise a mechanism to quickly rank the data that qualify for the query answer and to eliminate those that do not, in order to reduce the computation demand of the query processor. Extensive experiments with four different datasets confirm that our schemes achieve substantial performance speed-up of between two times and two orders of magnitude over existing TAs, at the expense of a memory overhead of 4.8 bits per attribute value. Moreover, our scheme is robust to different data distributions and query characteristics.

We study an important data analysis operator, which extracts the k most important groups from data (i.e., the k groups with the highest aggregate values). In a data warehousing context, an example of the above query is “find the 10 combinations of product-type and month with the largest sum of sales”. The problem is challenging as the potential number of groups can be much larger than the memory capacity. We propose on-demand methods for efficient top-k groups processing, under limited memory size. In particular, we design top-k groups retrieval techniques for three representative scenarios as follows. For the scenario with data physically ordered by measure, we propose the write-optimized multi-pass sorted access algorithm (WMSA), that exploits available memory for efficient top-k groups computation. Regarding the scenario with unordered data, we develop the recursive hash algorithm (RHA), which applies hashing with early aggregation, coupled with branch-and-bound techniques and derivation heuristics for tight score bounds of hash partitions. Next, we design the clustered groups algorithm (CGA), which accelerates top-k groups processing for the case where data is clustered by a subset of group-by attributes. Extensive experiments with real and synthetic datasets demonstrate the applicability and efficiency of the proposed algorithms.

Systems that produce ranked lists of results are abundant. For instance, Web search engines return ranked lists of Web pages. There has been work on distance measure for list permutations, like Kendall tau and Spearman's footrule, as well as extensions to handle top-k lists, which are more common in practice. In addition to ranking whole objects (e.g., Web pages), there is an increasing number of systems that provide keyword search on XML or other semistructured data, and produce ranked lists of XML sub-trees. Unfortunately, previous distance measures are not suitable for ranked lists of sub-trees since they do not account for the possible overlap between the returned sub-trees. That is, two sub-trees differing by a single node would be considered separate objects. In this paper, we present the first distance measures for ranked lists of sub-trees, and show under what conditions these measures are metrics. Furthermore, we present algorithms to efficiently compute these distance measures. Finally, we evaluate and compare the proposed measures on real data using three popular XML keyword proximity search systems.

Content-oriented XML retrieval systems support access to XML repositories by retrieving, in response to user queries, XML document components (XML elements) instead of whole documents. The retrieved XML elements should not only contain information relevant to the query, but also provide the right level of granularity. In INEX, the INitiative for the Evaluation of XML retrieval, a relevant element is defined to be at the right level of granularity if it is exhaustive and specific to the query. Specificity was specifically introduced to capture how focused an element is on the query (i.e., discusses no other irrelevant topics). To score XML elements according to how exhaustive and specific they are given a query, the content and logical structure of XML documents have been widely used. One source of evidence that has led to promising results with respect to retrieval effectiveness is element length. This work aims at examining a new source of evidence deriving from the semantic decomposition of XML documents. We consider that XML documents can be semantically decomposed through the application of a topic segmentation algorithm. Using the semantic decomposition and the logical structure of XML documents, we propose a new source of evidence, the number of topic shifts in an element, to reflect its relevance and more particularly its specificity. This paper has three research objectives. Firstly, we investigate the characteristics of XML elements reflected by their number of topic shifts. Secondly, we compare topic shifts to element length, by incorporating each of them as a feature in a retrieval setting and examining their effects in estimating the relevance of XML elements given a query. Finally, we use the number of topic shifts as evidence for capturing specificity to provide a focused access to XML repositories.

Uncertain data is inherent in a few important applications. It is far from trivial to extend ranking queries (also known as top-k queries), a popular type of queries on certain data, to uncertain data. In this paper, we cast ranking queries on uncertain data using three parameters: rank threshold k, probability threshold p, and answer set size threshold l. Systematically, we identify four types of ranking queries on uncertain data. First, a probability threshold top-k query computes the uncertain records taking a probability of at least p to be in the top-k list. Second, a top-(k, l) query returns the top-l uncertain records whose probabilities of being ranked among top-k are the largest. Third, the p-rank of an uncertain record is the smallest number k such that the record takes a probability of at least p to be ranked in the top-k list. A rank threshold top-k query retrieves the records whose p-ranks are at most k. Last, a top-(p, l) query returns the top-l uncertain records with the smallest p-ranks. To answer such ranking queries, we present an efficient exact algorithm, a fast sampling algorithm, and a Poisson approximation-based algorithm. To answer top-(k, l) queries and top-(p, l) queries, we propose PRist+, a compact index. An efficient index construction algorithm and efficacious query answering methods are developed for PRist+. An empirical study using real and synthetic data sets verifies the effectiveness of the probabilistic ranking queries and the efficiency of our methods.

Searching XML data using keyword queries has attracted much attention because it enables Web users to easily access XML data without having to learn a structured query language or study possibly complex data schemas. Most of the current approaches identify the meaningful results of a given keyword query based on the semantics of lowest common ancestor (LCA) and its variants. However, given the fact that LCA candidates are usually numerous and of low relevance to the users?? information need, how to effectively and efficiently identify the most relevant results from a large number of LCA candidates is still a challenging and unresolved issue. In this article, we introduce a novel semantics of relevant results based on mutual information between the query keywords. Then, we introduce a novel approach for identifying the relevant answers of a given query by adopting skyline semantics. We also recommend three different ranking criteria for selecting the top-k relevant results of the query. Efficient algorithms are proposed which rely on some provable properties of the dominance relationship between result candidates to rapidly identify the top-k dominant results. Extensive experiments were conducted to evaluate our approach and the results show that the proposed approach has a good performance compared with other existing approaches in different data sets and evaluation metrics

In this paper, we define a new class of queries, the top-k multiple-type integrated query (simply, top-k MULTI query). It deals with multiple data types and finds the information in the order of relevance between the query and the object. Various data types such as spatial, textual, and relational data types can be used for the top-k MULTI query. The top-k MULTI query distinguishes itself from the traditional top-k query in that the component scores to calculate final scores are determined dependent of the query. Hence, each component score is calculated only when the query is given for each data type rather than being calculated apriori as in the top-k query. As a representative instance, the traditional top-k spatial keyword query is an instance of the top-k MULTI query. It deals with the spatial data type and text data type and finds the information based on spatial proximity and textual relevance between the query and the object, which is determined only when the query is given. In this paper, we first define the top-k MULTI query formally and define a new specific instance for the top-k MULTI query, the top-k spatial-keyword-relational(SKR) query, by integrating the relational data type into the traditional top-k spatial keyword query. Then, we investigate the processing approaches for the top-k MULTI query. We discuss the scalability of those approaches as new data types are integrated. We also devise the processing methods for the top-k SKR query. Finally, through extensive experiments on the top-k SKR query using real and synthetic data sets, we compare efficiency of the methods in terms of the query performance and storage.

This work proposes the E-Top system for the efficient processing of top-k queries in mobile ad hoc peer to peer (M-P2P) networks using economic incentive schemes. In E-Top, brokers facilitate top-k query processing in lieu of a commission. E-Top issues economic rewards to the mobile peers, which send relevant data items (i.e., those that contribute to the top-k query result), and penalizes peers otherwise, thereby optimizing the communication traffic. Peers use the payoffs (rewards/penalties) as a means of feedback to re-evaluate the scores of their items for re-ranking purposes. The main contributions of E-Top are three-fold. First, it proposes two economic incentive schemes, namely ETK and ETK+, in which peers act individually towards top-k query processing. Second, it extends ETK and ETK+ to propose a peer group-based economic incentive scheme ETG. Third, our performance evaluation shows that our schemes are indeed effective in improving the performance of top-k queries in terms of query response times and accuracy at reasonable communication traffic cost.

An increasing number of application areas now rely on obtaining the “best matches” to a given query as opposed to exact matches sought by traditional transactions. This type of exploratory querying (also called top-k querying) can significantly improve the performance of web-based applications such as consumer reviews, price comparisons and recommendations for products/services. Due to the lack of support for specialized indexes and/or data structures in relational database management systems (RDBMSs), recent research has focused on utilizing summary statistics (histograms) maintained by RDBMSs for translating the top-k request into a traditional range query. Because the RDBMS query engines are already optimized for execution of range queries, such approach has both practical as well as efficiency advantages. In this paper, we review the strengths and weaknesses of common histogram construction techniques with regard to their structural characteristics, accuracy in approximating the true distribution of the underlying data, and implications for top-k retrieval. We also present our top-k retrieval strategy (Query-Level Optimal Cost Strategy — QLOCS) and demonstrate its “histogram-independent” performance. Based on comparative experimental and statistical analyses with the best-known histogram-based strategy in the literature, we show that QLOCS is not only more efficient but also provides more consistent performance across commonly used histogram types in RDBMSs.
