Automatic milking (AM) is increasing in modern dairy farming, and over 8,000 farms worldwide currently use this technology. Automatic milking system is designed to replace conventional milking managed by a milker in a milking parlor or in tie stalls. Cows are generally milked more frequently in AM than in conventional milking, and milking is quarter-based instead of udder-based. Despite improvements in the milking process and often building of a new barn before the introduction of AM, udder health of the cows has not improved; on the contrary, problems may appear following conversion from conventional milking to AM. This review focuses on udder health of dairy cows in AM, and we discuss several aspects of cow and milking management in AM associated with udder health. Finally, adequate management methods in AM are suggested. According to several studies comparing udder health between automatic and conventional milking or comparing udder health before and after the introduction of automatic milking in the same herds, udder health has deteriorated during the first year or more after the introduction of AM. Automatic detection of subclinical and clinical mastitis and cleaning the teats before milking are challenges of AM. Failures in mastitis detection and milking hygiene pose a risk for udder health. These risk factors can partly be controlled by management actions taken by the farmer, but AM also needs further technical development. To maintain good udder health in AM, it is imperative that the barn is properly designed to keep the cows clean and the cow traffic flowing. Milking frequency must be maintained for every cow according to its stage of lactation and milk production. Careful observation of the cows and knowledge of how to use all data gathered from the system are also important. “Automatic” does not mean that the role of a competent herdsman is in any way diminished.  相似文献

Data from the Norwegian dairy herd recording system were used to evaluate herd level criteria for good and poor udder health in dairy cows. All dairy herds with at least 10 cow-years were included (n = 12,780). The association between bulk milk somatic cell count (BMSCC) and clinical mastitis rate (CM) was weak (R2 = 0.002), indicating that studies based on BMSCC provide different information regarding udder health than studies based on CM. The strongest correlations were found between average cow milk somatic cell count (CMSCC) and BMSCC and between percentage of individual cow milk sample >200,000 cells/mL and the variables BMSCC and CMSCC. A new variable called new infection rate (NEWINF) based on individual cow somatic cell count measurements and CM was evaluated. The NEWINF is influenced by the frequency of individual cow milk samplings, and, to compare herds, it is necessary to adjust for the frequency of cow milk samplings on each farm. The NEWINF was found to be a useful tool for describing overall udder health status at the farm level, as it combines both CM and somatic cell count.  相似文献

The objectives of this exploratory study were to (1) describe the association between herd-level udder hygiene and clinical mastitis and (2) investigate how sample size and milking stage affect the accuracy and precision of herd udder hygiene assessments made at milking time. A prospective longitudinal study was conducted in a dairy herd in Northern Australia as part of a previously published clinical trial of premilking teat disinfection. Video footage from 35 afternoon milkings was used to conduct 12,544 udder hygiene scores from 504 cows during an 89-d period and measure udder hygiene of the herd (proportion of cows with udder hygiene ≥3 out of 4). Linear interpolation was used to estimate herd udder hygiene on the days that were not scored, such that a herd-level udder hygiene measure was available for all cow-days in the study. Clinical mastitis events occurring during the study period were detected and recorded by farm staff according to a standardized definition. The relationship between herd udder hygiene on each of 1, 2, and 3 d before each study day (d ?1, ?2, and ?3, respectively) and clinical mastitis at the cow level on each study day (each in turn being set as d 0) was determined using multivariable generalized estimating equations (family = Poisson, link = log), with the unit of analysis being the cow-day, adjusting for potential confounders and the clustering within the data. In addition, sampling strategies were evaluated by simulating herd udder hygiene assessments using a subset of cows in the herd. Herd udder hygiene from d ?1, ?2, and ?3 was positively associated with clinical mastitis on d 0 (incidence rate ratio = 1.4 per 10-point increase in the percentage of cows with poor udder hygiene). Sampling strategy simulation found that at least 80 cows needed to be scored to achieve sufficiently precise estimations of herd udder hygiene. Furthermore, cows scored later during milking were slightly more likely to have poor udder hygiene than those scored earlier (risk ratio = 1.02 for cows that were 10% later in the milking order). More research is needed to evaluate risk factors for poor udder hygiene and potential interventions in pasture-based dairy cows.  相似文献

Milk production per cow has increased significantly as a result of breeding, feeding, and other management factors. This study aims to address concerns about udder health risks for low- and high-producing dairy cows. In a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design, Holstein-Friesian heifers (n = 100) of low or high genetic merit for milk production, milked 2 or 3 times a day, and fed a mixed ration with low or high energy content, were compared during the first 14 wk of lactation. Milk composition and cell counts were determined weekly; quarter milk samples for bacteriology were taken in wk 2, 8, and 14; and teat condition was scored in wk 2, 6, 10, and 14 during the experiment. The experimental factors resulted in substantial differences in milk production between treatment groups (24.1 for low vs. 25.6 kg/d for high genetic merit; 23.3 for 2 times vs. 26.5 kg/d for 3 times daily milking; and 20.9 for low-energy ration vs. 29.0 kg/d for high-energy ration). Ration composition was the most important determining factor for milk production, but did not affect cell counts or intramammary bacterial infections, although cows that received low-energy rations had rougher teat ends than cows receiving high-energy rations. This indicates that high production itself is not a major risk factor for udder health in the first lactation. A higher milking frequency impaired teat condition and improved cell counts in general, but did not clearly influence bacteriological status. High genetic merit was related to higher cell count, more Staphylococcus, and less Bacillus and other environmental pathogens in cultures and did not affect teat condition. The effects of milking frequency and feeding on udder health were similar for cows with high and low genetic merit. Genetic selection on milk production, without taking udder health into account, reduces udder health. As a result, maintaining udder health will require increasing the skills and time of dairy farmers who have to divide their attention to more cows when farm sizes increase, or selection should put more emphasis on udder health traits.  相似文献

Udder edema (UE) is a common condition of cows around calving, but its effects are not well characterized. The objectives of this study were to determine the associations of UE with the incidence of health disorders and with milk yield and reproduction in dairy cows in early lactation. On 3 commercial farms, UE was scored weekly on 1,346 cows, on a scale of 0 to 3, from 1 wk before calving to 3 wk after calving. Among cows with complete UE scores, 30% never had edema, 12% had edema only prepartum, 11% had it only postpartum, and 48% had edema prepartum and in at least 1 wk postpartum. Udder edema was associated with a greater incidence of clinical mastitis before 30 d in milk (5 vs. 2%). Subclinical ketosis (blood β-hydroxybutyrate ≥1.2 mmol/L) was more prevalent at wk 2 (11 vs. 6%) postpartum among cows with UE. No association was observed of UE with other diseases or culling in early lactation. In a subset of 912 cows with complete UE and 3 test-days of milk yield data, differences were observed in yield at test d 1 among UE categories. Cows with UE only prepartum produced less milk (39.9 kg/d) than cows with UE postpartum only (42.4 kg/d) and cows with UE both prepartum and postpartum (41.6 kg/d), none of which differed from cows without UE (40.9 kg/d). Udder edema was not associated with the prevalence of anovulation, or the time to or probability of pregnancy at first insemination, yet to 300 d in milk, cows that had UE postpartum had a shorter time from calving to pregnancy than cows without UE. The associations of UE with health and productivity are mixed, and the mechanisms underlying UE and its effects merit further investigation.  相似文献

A Dutch dairy company initiated a quality system to support dairy farmers to improve sustainability on their farm. Improvement of udder health is defined by the dairy company as one of the sustainability items. A part of that quality system is to offer farmers 3 tools to improve the udder health status of the herd. The first tool is an Udder Health Workshop at which farmers make a farm-specific action plan to improve the udder health situation in their herd. The second tool is the Udder Health Navigator, which is an internet-based program to gain insight in the actual udder health situation at the farm. The third tool is the Udder Health Checklist, which is available on the internet and it identifies farm-specific risks for udder health problems. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of these tools in improving udder health. The bulk milk somatic cell count (BMSCC) was used as the measure of herd udder health performance. In total, 605 farms attended the Udder Health Workshop, 988 farms completed the Udder Health Navigator, and 1,855 farms completed the Udder Health Checklist in 2012. Information on BMSCC records (2 records per month) was available for 12,782 Dutch dairy farms during the years 2011 and 2012. For every farm, the average BMSCC of all months during the years 2012 and 2011 were calculated. This resulted in 306,768 average monthly observations of the BMSCC. Subsequently, all months after the completion of one of the tools were assigned a 1, and all other months were assigned a 0. A statistical analysis was carried out to compare the average monthly BMSCC of the farms that completed one or more tools with farms that did not complete one of the tools. Both completing the Udder Health Navigator and the Udder Health Checklist had a significant association with a lower average monthly BMSCC. The effect of the Udder Health Navigator and Udder Health Checklist on the BMSCC were greater in herds with a BMSCC in 2011 of 200,000 to 250,000 cells/mL and even greater for herds with a BMSCC above 250,000 cells/mL compared with herds with a BMSCC in 2011 of 150,000 to 200,000 cells/mL or less than 150,000 cells/mL. It is difficult to draw conclusions on the effect of the Udder Health Workshop due to overlap in participation between the tools. The results suggest that completing the web tools is associated with a reduction in the BMSCC of the herd.  相似文献

A cross-sectional study was conducted to explore the applicability of systematic clinical examinations of udders as an additional tool for the evaluation of udder health status on dairy farms. During 2000, each of the 16 dairy farms was visited 5 times; 20 cows per farm were chosen at random at each visit for clinical udder examination immediately after milking. The clinical examination included both pathological and morphological variables. One examination per cow was included in the analysis (n = 707 cows). Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed in 3 steps. First, 19 variables characterizing udder and teats were analyzed (PCA 1). Second, the variables parity and stage of lactation were included (PCA 2). Finally, somatic cell count (SCC) and milk yield (PCA 3) were included. The PCA resulted in 4 components that explained 30% of the variation of the data: 1) small udder, 2) distressed udder, 3) mastitis udder, and 4) soiled udder. Variables with high positive correlation to the "small udder" were small udder shape, short teats, and first parity. Impaired teat surface, hard udder texture, and a long udder shape were related to the "distressed udder." The "mastitis udder" was characterized by the clinical variables asymmetry between front quarters, asymmetry between hind quarters, knotty tissue, and acute clinical mastitis. Reduced milk yield and high SCC were related to the "mastitis udder," whereas low SCC was related to the "small udder." The "soiled udder" was related to early lactation. Including this information in the assessment of udder health may be of substantial value for data analysis in farms with suspected under-reporting of clinical mastitis.  相似文献

The main objective of this study was to evaluate evolutions in herd-level antimicrobial consumption (AMC) and in udder health and milk quality parameters between herds that received mastitis management input on a regular basis (actively advised by the first author; referred to as intervention herds) and herds that did not (referred to as control herds). Strikingly, herds in the intervention group had a significantly higher prevalence of new intramammary infections compared with those in the control group. No significant differences were observed in the percentage of chronically infected cows, the bulk milk somatic cell count, and the bacterial and coliform count between the intervention and control herds, nor did the herd-level AMC differ between them. Furthermore, the level of mastitis management applied in each herd was assessed and scored [mastitis management score (MMS); higher is better], as was the level of implementation of different recommended mastitis management practices over time, expressed as the mastitis management implementation score (MMIS; higher is better). A large variation was observed in MMS and MMIS in the intervention herds (median = 16 and range = 12 to 22; median = 13 and range = ?5 to 31, respectively) and the control herds (median = 16 and range = 9 to 22; median = 9 and range = ?13 to 22, respectively). Also, intervention herds in which the herd veterinarian attended each herd visit executed by the first author had a higher MMS and MMIS (median = 20 and 24, respectively) compared with herds in which the veterinarian sometimes (median = 16 and 17, respectively) or never (median = 16.5 and 7.5, respectively) attended the herd visits. Further, the association between MMS or MMIS on one hand and udder health, milk quality, and the herd-level AMC over time on the other was studied using the data of both groups of herds. Better mastitis management was associated with a reduction in the consumption of antimicrobials that are critically important for human health over time and with lower bacterial counts and bulk milk somatic cell count. Better mastitis management can be helpful in obtaining better milk quality and more responsible use of critically important antimicrobials on dairy farms.  相似文献

Weekly body condition score (BCS) and live weight records were used to calculate energy content (EC) and cumulative effective energy balance (CEEB) for 508 Holstein-Friesian cows in their first lactation. Cows were raised on an experimental farm and had calved between 1991 and 2000. Energy content was an estimate of the actual energy level of a cow at any given stage of lactation, whereas CEEB was associated with the total body energy content as defined by accumulated weekly energy balance changes since the onset of lactation. Genetic evaluations were computed for the 3 body energy traits (BCS, EC, and CEEB) for each week of first lactation. Random regression models were used to assess the association between first-lactation weekly genetic evaluations for body energy and monthly test-day log-transformed SCC, clinical mastitis, and other udder problems in the first 3 lactations. There was a significant effect of at least one body energy trait at any stage of first lactation past wk 3 on SCC in the first 3 lactations. Maximum genetic correlation estimates were −0.18 (±0.04) between wk-16 BCS and SCC in the first 2 lactations, −0.18 (±0.04) between wk-11 EC and SCC in the first 2 lactations, and −0.17 (±0.07) between wk-6 CEEB and SCC in the first 2 lactations. The effect of body energy traits on clinical mastitis was, in general, nonsignificant; nevertheless, moderate genetic correlations were estimated, ranging from −0.05 (±0.07) to −0.25 (±0.15). The effect of body energy traits on udder problems other than mastitis was negligible in all cases. Results suggest that, amongst the traits studied here, BCS, EC, and CEEB in the first 3 to 4 mo of lactation 1 had the greatest genetic association with SCC and mastitis in first, second, and, to a lesser extent, third lactations.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were (a) to evaluate skin biopsies of udder sores and negative control cows for the presence of mange and nonbacterial pathogens via histopathology and (b) to identify and compare bacterial abundance in the lesions of cows with udder sores and from the skin of healthy controls from the same farms. Cows from 3 dairy farms with (n = 23) and without (n = 12) udder sore lesions were enrolled, and punch biopsies (23 lesions, 23 negative control samples of cows with lesions, and 12 control samples of cows without lesions) were collected. The biopsies were evaluated histopathologically, and their 16S metagenome was analyzed. No signs of mange or viral or fungal infections were detected histopathologically in any samples. The α diversity of microbial populations decreased in lesions, across all farms, and the abundance of spirochaetes did not notably change, compared with controls. However, compared with control samples, the microbial fractions of Fusobacterium, Helcococcus spp., Anaerococcus spp., Porphyromonas spp., Prevotella spp., and Trueperella spp. increased several-fold in lesions. In summary, our results suggest that spirochaetes, viruses, and mange are unlikely to cause udder sores. Instead, sores were associated with a marked increase in the abundance of Fusobacterium, Helcococcus, Anaerococcus, Porphyromonas, Prevotella, and Trueperella. Future studies are needed to determine which of these bacteria initiates this polymicrobial infection.  相似文献

The effects of milk yield at dry-off (DO), different calving intervals (CI; 12 and 15 mo) and breed on metabolism and udder health were studied in 56 primiparous and multiparous cows of the Swedish Red and White (SRB) and Swedish Holstein (SH) breeds. The cows were dried off 55 ± 5 d prior to expected parturition. They were fed 4 kg of DM as silage and wheat straw ad libitum for 5 d, and were milked in the morning of d 2 and 5. Depending on their daily milk yield, the cows were divided into 3 numerically equal groups on 2 d during the week prior to DO: low (LY; 5.0 to 11.4 kg of milk/d, n = 19), medium (MY; 11.5 to 17.7 kg of milk/d, n = 19), and high (HY; 17.8 to 29.5 kg of milk/d, n = 18). The plasma cortisol concentration increased during DO only in MY and HY cows. Plasma nonesterified fatty acids increased during DO in all groups, but the maximum nonesterified fatty acid concentration was related to the milk yield prior to DO. The plasma glucose level during the DO period was not significantly affected by yield, but the insulin concentration decreased after DO, with a more pronounced drop in the HY group. The CI 15-mo group had a higher glucose level and tended to have a higher insulin level in plasma than the CI 12-mo group before DO. They also had a higher body condition than the CI 12-mo group. The results indicate that the CI 15-mo cows had a more positive nutrient balance. There were no effects of CI on milk production or composition during DO. The SRB and SH breeds did not differ in any of the measured plasma parameters or milk production. However, the lower somatic cell counts in SRB than in SH observed before and during DO, as well as after parturition, were attributed to being an effect of breed. The proportion of cows with intramammary infections (IMI) was significantly lower just after calving in the LY group than in the other yield groups. At 2 and 3 wk after DO, significantly fewer cows in the LY group had open teat canals compared with the HY and MY groups, respectively, but teat-end condition did not differ between yield groups. The yield before DO did not significantly influence the somatic cell counts during the first 4 wk after parturition or the presence of IMI 4 wk after parturition. We concluded that in the present study, higher milk yield prior to DO gave rise to a more pronounced metabolic response and a higher risk of contracting IMI during the dry period, at calving, or both, but yield at DO did not have any long-term effects on udder health. A prolonged CI did not facilitate a rapid decrease in milk production. The SRB and SH breeds responded equally in decreasing the milk production during DO, but the SRB breed had lower somatic cell counts.  相似文献

The response of dairy cows to omitting one milking weekly was investigated in two successive experiments conducted with Holstein cows milked twice daily. Experiment 1 compared the lactational performances and udder changes in eight cows (31.2 L/d, 201 d in milk) in the 5 wk before and the 5 wk after introducing the suppression of one milking weekly. Milk yield was recorded daily and milk composition twice weekly. Milk partitioning in the udder (alveolar and cisternal milk) and cisternal size (ultrasonography), 8 h after milking, were also measured at the start and the end of the experiment. Although daily milk yield decreased 32% during the experiment (10 wk), linear regression analysis revealed a loss of milk yield of 1.1 L/d (3.7%) as a consequence of the omission of one milking weekly. Milk composition, lactation persistency, and somatic cell count (SCC) were unaffected by milking omission. Milk partitioning in the udder decreased by 38% in alveolar milk volume and showed a tendency to decrease in cisternal milk volume (15%) and cisternal size (7%), as a result of milking omission and advancing lactation. Loss in total milk yield was negatively related with cisternal milk volume (r = -0.77) and cisternal size (r = -0.70) indicating smaller losses in the udders with large cisterns. In Experiment 2, five cows (21.0 L/d, 227 d in milk) previously adapted to the milking omission schedule were used to study the daily effects of milking omission on milk yield, milk composition and udder health during 10 wk. Milk yield and milk composition were approximately constant but SCC increased with lactation stage. The omission of one milking caused an important decrease in milk yield, fat content and SCC on the omission day and a compensatory increase over the following 2 d, but milk protein and lactose did not vary. All variables reached the average weekly value three days after the milking omission (six milkings). In conclusion, under the conditions used, omitting one milking weekly slightly reduced milk yield and did not affect milk composition when healthy cows were used. Milk losses by milking omission depend on udder cistern characteristics; evaluating cistern size by ultrasonography may be a useful tool for choosing cows that are better adapted to a reduced milking frequency.  相似文献

In a cross-sectional study, we investigated the effects of human-animal interactions and management factors on udder health in 46 Swiss dairy herds living in loose-housing systems on farms that participated in the Swiss dairy farm network “pro-Q.” The human-animal relationship was measured by observing milkers’ behavior, cows’ behavior during milking, and cows’ avoidance distance in the barn. Management factors were assessed by questionnaire-guided interviews and observations. Udder health was evaluated using indicators that were calculated from milk recording data over a period of 1 yr before assessment: (1) average somatic cell scores (SCS) per herd and (2) incidence of new infections per herd (NEWINF); and indicators that were calculated from quarter milk samples of all lactating cows at the time of assessment: (3) prevalence of quarters with elevated somatic cell counts (>100,000 cells/mL; %Q>100) and (4) prevalence of mastitis quarters (>100,000 cells/mL and culturally positive; %Qmast). After univariate preselection of associated factors, multivariable linear regression models were calculated at the herd level and a multilevel regression model was calculated at the herd and cow levels for SCS. Among all of the human-animal relationship factors, the most dominant predictor for SCS, %Q>100, and %Qmast was the percentage of positive interactions of milkers with the cows in relation to all of their interactions during milking. Furthermore, a higher prevalence of fearful cows in the herd (with an avoidance distance >1 m) was associated with a higher %Q>100. In herds with a higher NEWINF, incidents of cows kicking during milking occurred more frequently. Concerning management as well as farm and herd characteristics, the following mastitis risk factors were found: (1) breed, especially Holstein with regard to SCS, NEWINF, and %Qmast; (2) high age in terms of lactation number with regard to SCS and %Qmast; (3) high amount of new infections of a cow over 1 yr with regard to SCS; (4) air-adsorption during application of teat-cups with regard to NEWINF; (5) lack of separation of diseased cows with regard to NEWINF; and (6) ample dimensions of lying places with regard to %Qmast. The results suggest that the human-animal relationship is relevant for udder health, especially for cows’ reactions to infections expressed as somatic cell count levels. Risk of infection itself appears to be mainly influenced by management factors. Hence, the human-animal relationship may be considered in extension concerning preventive mastitis control.  相似文献

Bulk milk somatic cell count (BMSCC) averages have been used to evaluate udder health both at the individual or the herd level as well as milk quality and hygiene. The authors show that the BMSCC average is not the best tool to be used in udder health control programs and that it can be replaced with advantage by the capability index (Cpk). The Cpk is a statistical process control tool traditionally used by engineers to validate, monitor, and predict the expected behavior of processes or machines. The BMSCC data of 13 consecutive months of production from 414 dairy herds as well as SCC from all cows in the DHI program from 264 herds in the same period were collected. The Cpk and the annual BMSCC average (AAVG) of all the herds were calculated. Confronting the herd's performance explained by the Cpk and AAVG with the European Union (EU) official limit for BMSCC of 400,000 cells/mL, it was noticed that the Cpk accurately classified the compliance of the 414 farms, whereas the AAVG misclassified 166 (40%) of the 414 selected farms. The annual prevalence of subclinical mastitis (SMP) of each herd was calculated with individual SCC data from the same 13-mo period. Cows with more than 200,000 SCC/mL were considered as having subclinical mastitis. A logistic regression model to relate the Cpk and the herd's subclinical mastitis prevalence was calculated. The model is: SMPe = 0.475 e(-0.5286 x Cpk). The validation of the model was carried out evaluating the relation between the observed SMP and the predicted SMPe, in terms of the linear correlation coefficient (R2) and the mean difference between SMP and SMPe (i.e., mean square error of prediction). The validation suggests that our model can be used to estimate the herd's SMP with the herd's Cpk. The Cpk equation relates the herd's BMSCC with the EU official SCC limit, thus the logistic regression model enables the adoption of critical limits for subclinical mastitis, taking into consideration the legal standard for SCC.  相似文献

The objective of this prospective field study was to evaluate the effects of extending the lactation period of high-yielding dairy cows on milk production, udder health characteristics, and development of body condition. On 40 d in milk (DIM), an examination of the genital tract (transrectal palpation, sonography, vaginoscopy) was performed. Cows without signs of clinical endometritis were blocked by parity and were randomly allocated to 1 of 3 experimental groups with a voluntary waiting period of 40, 120, and 180 d, respectively (G40, n = 135; G120, n = 141; G180, n = 139). Mean daily milk and energy-corrected milk production did not differ between the 3 groups regarding the first 305 d or for the whole lactation (d 1 and up to dry off, culling, or 600 DIM). In late lactation (306 to 600 DIM), G40 had lower average productivity (23.8 kg) compared with G120 (26.5 kg), with G180 showing intermediate values (25.7 kg). The extended lactation groups showed greater persistency, as the rate of decline based on a Wilmink function was lower for G120 (c = ?0.063 and ?0.045 for milk and energy-corrected milk, respectively) and G180 (c = ?0.061 and ?0.047) compared with G40 (c = ?0.071 and ?0.056). We found no difference between the 3 groups regarding the evaluated udder health characteristics (somatic cell count, incidence of mastitis, and days off milk due to mastitis). More cows in G180 (7.9%) were culled due to low productivity compared with G40 (0.7%) and as a tendency compared with G120 (2.8%). Moreover, cows of G180 showed higher median body condition score at the time of dry off compared with cows of both G40 and G120 (3.50 for G180 vs. 3.25 for both G40 and G120). At the time of dry off, G180 cows also had greater backfat thickness (25.0 mm) compared with both G40 (22.2 mm) and G120 cows (21.6 mm). Bacteriological status, evaluation of udder symmetry, udder hygiene, and teat end scores of 92 dairy cows were assessed on 3 Swiss dairy farms in a longitudinal 1-yr study to determine risk factors for intramammary infection (IMI) with coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) species. Farm visits were performed monthly including sterile quarter milk sampling and udder evaluation of all lactating cows. Milk samples were evaluated for the presence of staphylococci using selective agar plates. Species identification was performed using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Intramammary infection was defined as milk samples having ≥100 cfu per mL of milk according to culture results. Overall, 3,151 quarter samples were included in the statistical analysis. Staphylococcus chromogenes, Staphylococcus haemolyticus, Staphylococcus xylosus, and a Staphylococcus warneri-like species were the 4 most prevalent CNS species found. Hierarchical multivariable logistic regression models were built to evaluate risk factors for species-specific CNS IMI. Risk factors for Staph. chromogenes IMI were presence in herd B, the period from June 2014 to August 2014 and December 2014 to February 2015, and presence of udder edema. For Staph. haemolyticus, the relevant risk factor included coinfection with Staph. xylosus coinfection with other than the above-mentioned CNS species (“others”) and the period from June 2014 to November 2014. Coinfection with Staph. haemolyticus and “others,” the periods from June 2014 to August 2014 and December 2014 to February 2015, early phase of lactation (1–60 d in milk), and belonging to herd B were significantly associated with Staph. xylosus IMI. Mid and late lactation, coinfection with Staph. xylosus, and the period September 2014 to May 2015 were identified as significant risk factors for Staph. warneri-like IMI. For Staph. chromogenes, 60.6 and 26% of the variance was observed at the quarter and cow level, respectively, whereas for the other investigated species the highest variance was observed at the sample level. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between udder health (UH) status and blood serum proteins (i.e., total protein, albumin, globulin, and albumin-to-globulin ratio) in dairy cows. Blood and milk samples were collected from 1,508 cows of 6 different breeds (Holstein Friesian, Brown Swiss, Jersey, Simmental, Rendena, and Alpine Grey) that were housed in 41 multibreed herds. Bacteriological analysis was performed on milk samples with somatic cell count (SCC) >100,000 cells/mL and bacteria identification was confirmed by multiplex-PCR assays. Milk samples were grouped into 7 clusters of UH status: healthy (cows with milk SCC <100,000 cells/mL and not cultured); culture-negative samples with low, medium, or high SCC; and culture-positive samples with contagious, environmental, and opportunistic intramammary infections. Data of blood serum proteins were analyzed using a linear mixed model that included the fixed effects of stage of lactation, parity, breed, herd productivity (high or low production) and UH status, and the random effect of herd-date within herd productivity. Culture-negative samples with high milk SCC, which were most likely undergoing a strong inflammatory response and whose pathogens could not be isolated because they were engulfed by macrophages or because they had already cleared, and milk samples infected by contagious and environmental bacteria were associated with greater globulin concentrations (and lower albumin-to-globulin ratio) in blood. Variation in blood serum proteins seems to be associated with inflammatory status rather than infection, as serum globulin significantly increased in UH status groups with the highest milk SCC and no differences were observed among intramammary infections pathogens. Blood serum proteins can be a mammary gland inflammation indicator, but cannot be used to differentiate among different UH status groups.  相似文献

Soils and plants in Atlantic Canadian provinces are known to contain low concentrations of selenium (Se). Earlier studies have indicated that dairy producers in Atlantic Canada are providing insufficient supplementary Se in the ration to meet the Se requirements of dairy cattle, as measured by herd-level milk Se concentration. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between milk Se concentration and somatic cell count (SCC) and the risk of new intramammary infection (IMI) in the dry period, in Atlantic Canadian dairy cows. Eighteen dairy farms participating in the Canadian Bovine Mastitis Research Network cohort study were selected as a convenience sample. On each farm 15 cows to be dried off were selected. Quarter milk samples were collected at 4 and 2 wk before drying-off, within 24 h after calving, and at 7 d after calving to evaluate IMI status. Composite milk samples were analyzed for SCC and Se concentration. Mean milk Se concentration was marginal in 14% of the cows that were on pasture during the grazing season. Milk Se concentration was not associated with the overall odds of new IMI in the dry period; however, the odds of having a new Streptococcus spp. and other gram-positive pathogen IMI in the dry period increased with increasing milk Se concentration. Somatic cell count increased with milk Se concentration, even after adjusting for IMI status. The dairy population in our study had higher ranges for milk Se concentration, whereas ranges for prevalence of IMI, and SCC were lower, compared with those in studies where a negative relationship between Se status and udder health was first noted. Therefore, under the current management conditions, milk Se concentration did not appear to be a principal determinant of udder health.  相似文献

Selenium (Se) deficiency has been associated with lowered resistance to mastitis in dairy cattle. However, little published data exists on the effect of Se supplementation before calving on udder health of pastured dairy heifers. Further, the relative efficacy of injectable barium selenate and oral organic Se for improving udder health in cows has not previously been tested. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of precalving Se supplementation and type of supplementation on the blood activity of glutathione peroxidase and measures of udder health immediately after calving and during the first month of lactation in pastured dairy heifers. One hundred forty pregnant Chilean Holstein-Friesian heifers were fed a basal diet containing, on average, 0.15 mg of Se/kg of dry matter. One month before predicted calving, heifers were allocated to 1 of 3 groups. Group 1 (n = 49) received no supplementary Se, group 2 (n = 46) received a single subcutaneous injection of Se (1 mg/kg of live weight, as barium selenate), and group 3 (n = 45) was fed Se yeast (3 mg/heifer/d until calving). Heifers supplemented with barium selenate had a higher glutathione peroxidase activity from 14 d in milk onwards. Selenium supplementation, irrespective of source, tended to reduce the prevalence of intramammary infection (IMI) and decrease the prevalence of quarters with high somatic cell count (SCC) at calving. Overall, Se supplementation did not result in a reduction of the incidence of new IMI or clinical mastitis or in decreased SCC during the balance of the first month of lactation. However, in pasture-based heifers injected with barium selenate before calving, and fed diets with 1.3 and 2.5 mg of Se/d precalving and during lactation, respectively, no cases of clinical mastitis were observed in the first month of lactation.  相似文献

Intramammary infections induce the initiation of the inflammatory response, resulting in an increase in somatic cell count (SCC) in milk. The SCC includes several different types of cells but does not differentiate between them. On the contrary, the new differential somatic cell count (DSCC) parameter allows for the differentiation between 2 groups of cells: polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) and lymphocytes versus macrophages. Therefore, the aim of this paper was to describe the changes of both DSCC and SCC during mastitis induced by cell wall components from typical mastitis-causing pathogens [lipopolysaccharide (LPS), Escherichia coli; lipoteichoic acid (LTA), Staphylococcus aureus] known to trigger different severities of mastitis. In addition, the effect the glucocorticoid prednisolone (PRED), which is known to attenuate the immune response in the mammary gland, was investigated. Twenty dairy cows were equally divided into 5 groups and treated with LPS, LTA, LPS+PRED, LTA+PRED, or a saline control. Milk samples were taken at the following time points: baseline (d ?3, ?2, and ?1), right before treatment (d 0), 5 h after treatment (d 0.2), early cure phase (d 1 and 2), and late cure phase (d 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 14) and analyzed for DSCC and SCC. Mean DSCC values increased significantly from <60% at baseline and right before treatment to >81% 5 h after treatment and the early cure phase in all groups, except for the groups control and LTA+PRED. This increase clearly reflects a shift in cell populations to predominantly PMN. The SCC increased significantly following the stimulation, too, as expected. Interestingly, we observed cases where SCC increased moderately only whereas DSCC showed an evident increase, meaning that the shift in cell populations occurred even at low SCC levels. The PRED clearly lowered the cell migration in group LTA+PRED. This is the first ever study investigating DSCC during induced mastitis under controlled conditions. The combination of DSCC and SCC could be employed for the earlier detection of mastitis by revealing the shift in cell population independent from the SCC level. Furthermore, combining DSCC and SCC information could help to determine the stage of mastitis because we observed high DSCC and SCC results in the early stage of mastitis but evidently lower DSCC and high SCC in the cure phase. Hence, our results offer the first fundamental insights on how mastitis monitoring could be improved in the frame of dairy herd improvement programs.  相似文献
