We present the design and development of a novel tunable dispersion compensator with fixed center wavelength that is based on the electrical adjustment of the chirp of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG). Both temperature gradient and strain gradient are employed to adjust the chirp of the FBG jointly. The electrical current flowing through the taper on-fiber thin-film heater will introduce a temperature gradient on the FBG. The shrinkage of a negative thermal expansion coefficient (NTEC) ceramic due to the temperature rise will compress the tapered FBG mounted inside it, and this will introduce a strain gradient on the FBG. The center wavelength of the FBG will be kept fixed because the effect of temperature rise on the FBG and the effect of compression of the FBG will offset each other. Applying an electrical power of less than 0.68 W, we demonstrate a linearly chirped FBG whose dispersion can be continuously adjusted from -178 ps/nm to -302 ps/nm with a central wavelength shift of as small as 0.16 nm.  相似文献

Using uniform phase mask and conventional fabrication technology with submicrometer rather than nanometer precision, a pure third-order dispersion-compensating fiber Bragg grating (DCFBG) and a tunable slope DCFBG are demonstrated with high performance based on the combined reconstruction equivalent-chirp method and an error correction technique. The former DCFBG has a dispersion varying from /spl sim/1000 to /spl sim/-1000 ps/nm in the 100-GHz passband and group delay ripple is less than /spl plusmn/5 ps. The latter has a dispersion slope varying from -150 to 150 ps/nm/sup 2/ within the 3-nm passband, and its group delay ripple is less than /spl plusmn/10 ps.  相似文献

提出了一种新型的可小范围连续调谐的色度色散(CD)补偿方案.该CD补偿方案包括一个半导体光放大器(SOA)和一段固定长度的色散补偿光纤(DCF).利用SOA的交叉相位调制(XPM)效应,通过调节SOA的偏置电流和控制脉冲光的强度,可以对进入SOA的光信号引入不同大小的附加啁啾量,从而可以利用固定长度的DCF得到补偿后的无啁啾光信号.实验中,实现了10 Gb/s可调谐CD补偿器,在无需替换DCF的情况下,实现了补偿范围为-40 ps/nm到60 ps/nm的连续可调谐CD补偿.  相似文献

An ultrashort-cavity thin-film laser of InGaAsP, pumped with a mode-locked and Q-switched Nd: YAG laser, has been used as the source and an InGaAs/InP p-i-n photodiode as the detector to demonstrate a system capable of measuring bandwidths of 8.5 GHz in single-mode optical fibers. The film laser emits pulses shorter than 10 ps and is tunable over 1700 A near the chromatic dispersion minimum in fibers.  相似文献

An intrinsically ultrafast, wide-band, and -range tunable dispersion compensation (TDC) is realized through parametric wavelength conversion in conjunction with fibers with large dispersion slope such as dispersion compensating fibers. The proposed schemes have unique potentials that they can operate with fast response in a truly colorless manner and are capable of producing two orders of magnitude larger bandwidth-dispersion product than conventional ones. After the discussions on the operating principle and design issues, a proof-of-concept experiment is performed to verify the static operations achieving a tunable dispersion range larger than plusmn280.5 ps2 for 2.47 ps optical pulses.  相似文献

The authors report the first realisation of an integrated-optic variable group-delay dispersion equaliser using a lattice-form programmable optical filter. The equaliser consists of seven tunable couplers and six asymmetrical Mach-Zehnder interferometers cascaded alternately in series. We propose and demonstrate a novel colorless tunable optical dispersion compensator (TODC) consisting of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) connected to an ar- rayed-waveguide grating with a thermooptic lens. The MZI approximately doubles the magnitude bandwidth at large dispersion settings. We demonstrate compensation of a 43-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero signal dispersed over a range of -844 to + 1700 ps/nm. To our knowledge, +1700 ps/nm is the largest demonstrated dispersion compensation amount of a 40-Gb/s signal with a single TODC.  相似文献

Dispersion management is critical for next-generation high-bandwidth-utilization fiber-optical networks. Square-top thin-film bandpass filters for 50-GHz dense wavelength-division multiplexing inherently have high chromatic dispersion (CD) in transmission. The imparted dispersion power penalty on the network is undesirable. However, a second thin-film filter, operating in reflection, can be designed to compensate the CD of the bandpass filter. In this paper we demonstrate experimentally the reduction of the intrinsic CD of a 50-GHz thin-film coupler from /spl plusmn/170 ps/nm to /spl plusmn/50 ps/nm over a 30-GHz passband, through the use of such a cascaded thin-film compensator. Network simulations based on filter performance confirm the reduced dispersion power penalty of the cascade over the individual filter.  相似文献

Tunable pulse-width management is one of the efficient methods to enhance the robustness of return-to-zero (RZ) data formats for long-haul transmission systems. We demonstrate both single channel and 4 /spl times/ 10-Gb/s wavelength-division-multiplexed performance optimization using tunable pulse-width management. Pure RZ single with tunable pulse-width is generated by changing the driving voltages on a phase modulator and the dispersion values of a tunable dispersion element simultaneously according to our simulation results. Varying the pulse width from 50 to 10 ps at the transmitter can almost double the transmission distance with 4% variation in the residual link dispersion.  相似文献

Group-delay dispersion slope causes signal deterioration in long-distance high-data-rate communication systems. We report the fabrication of high-quality apodized and chirped fiber gratings with dispersion slopes as high as -1800 ps/nm/sup -2/ over a 0.7-mn bandwidth-sufficient to compensate for the dispersion slope of >25000-km length of standard fiber at a wavelength of 1550 nm. We believe this is the first time that fiber Bragg gratings have been specifically designed and fabricated for dispersion slope compensation. The fabrication technique uses a standard unchirped phase mask and two scans of the inscribing UV beam.  相似文献

Highly versatile building blocks for polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) emulation and compensation are demonstrated using tunable all-pass filters fabricated in 4%-index-contrast planar waveguides. While the all-pass filters can approximate any phase response, the complexity in setting the individual filter parameters is minimized by restricting the all-pass filter responses to realize a range of differential delays, dispersion, and dispersion slope. A single section can approximate first-order or a higher-order PMD term or emulate chromatic or higher-order dispersion. A differential group delay (DGD) tuning range over 100 ps is demonstrated for 10 Gb/s and 25 ps for 40 Gb/s data. Second-order PMD with a tuning range of 255 ps/sup 2/ and third-order PMD with a range of 2430 ps/sup 3/ are also demonstrated. The larger index contrast required for the ring-resonator-based all-pass filters is advantageous in reducing the thermooptic response time to achieve polarization rotation speeds on the order of 0.1 /spl mu/s/degree. The device is interferometrically stable and compact in size. It can be fully integrated, scaled to many sections, and can implement a variety of PMD synthesis and statistical-emulation approaches.  相似文献

A novel optical model for a tunable dispersion compensator is realized by a deliberate packaging scheme ensuing from intensive interactions of mechanical design, materials science and numerical simulation techniques including computational fluid dynamics and finite element analysis. The compensator is comprised of multiple cascaded single cavity Gires-Tournois etalons, each under independent temperature control. Three critical issues are addressed: etalon temperature uniformity, thermal insulation and optical surface deformation of the etalons. With etalon optical surface deformation minimized and etalon temperature uniformity successfully controlled within a range of /spl plusmn/0.1/spl deg/C, this small (232 /spl times/ 139 /spl times/ 16 mm) compensator achieves extremely low group delay ripple (<2.0 ps), low insertion loss ripple (<0.5 dB, insertion loss <6.3 dB), low polarization dependent loss [(PDL),<0.15 dB] and low polarization mode dispersion [(PMD),<0.7 ps]. The dispersion tuning range is from -700 ps/nm to +700 ps/nm in a dispersion passband of 0.2 nm which is sufficient for 10-Gb/s transmission. Thermal insulation design makes the tuning process take effect within 1 min at maximum power consumption 5 W.  相似文献

We propose a tunable optical dispersion compensator (TODC) that uses an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) and a flat mirror. The TODC employs simple and cost-effective optics, and its chromatic dispersion can be changed simply by translating the AWG. We obtained a 3-dB bandwidth of 39 GHz when the dispersion was tuned within 800 ps/nm, and a maximum dispersion of ${pm}$3000 ps/nm.   相似文献

We report a novel dispersion tunable device for first-order dispersion compensation. It is based on a fiber Bragg grating written in a tapered fiber with a specific profile. The taper profile allows tuning the dispersion of the grating by stretching the fiber while the linearity of the group delay is preserved. A device with 0.8 nm of useful bandwidth and dispersion value tunable over more than 400 ps/nm is reported.  相似文献

The device consists of two quadratically chirped fiber Bragg gratings, each with linear strain actuators. The module has a tuning range of 500 ps/nm and a bandwidth of 0.5 nm. 利用啁啾光纤光栅的应变调谐特性,将色散补偿的啁啾光纤光栅斜贴于悬臂梁的侧面,通过应力实现啁啾量调整而改变其色散补偿量的大小,同时利用固定在同一悬臂梁的均匀布拉格光栅传感器,实现了闭环自动控制色散补偿量,研制出了一种新型的光纤光栅动态色散补偿仪。该色散补偿仪工作在1550nm波段,典型性能数据为:色散动态补偿范围-1000-1680ps/nm,插入损耗小于1.5dB,动态调谐步进响应时间小于50ms,基本上能满足10Gb/s光纤通信系统中色散动态补偿的要求。  相似文献
