Cytological changes of feather pulp lesions (FPL) sampled chronologically from the same specific-pathogen free chickens inoculated with Marek's disease virus serotype 1 (MDV) were examined, comparing with their histological changes. The birds having Marek's disease (MD) lymphomas or nerve lesions exhibited the characteristic lesion changes on the cytological smears of FPL; the initial non-suppurative inflammatory to the late lymphomatous FPL. The birds having neither the MD visceral lymphomas nor the nerve lesions manifested only non-suppurative inflammatory FPL on the cytological smears throughout the experimental periods. Histological evaluation of FPL sampled from the same birds confirmed as above mentioned cytological results. From these results, the cytological evaluation of FPL proved to be an effective diagnostic and prognostic tool in foreseeing MD incidence.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To characterize prevalence and type of cardiac disease evident in psittacine birds during postmortem examination. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 26 psittacine birds with gross and histologic evidence of cardiac disease. PROCEDURE: Records of postmortem examinations of psittacine birds necropsied during a 4-year period were reviewed. Data on gross and histologic evidence of cardiac disease were analyzed. Birds identified included those in which congestive heart failure (CHF) was considered the primary cause of death and those in which substantial cardiac disease was evident, despite a lack of postmortem findings supportive of CHF. RESULTS: Of 269 psittacine birds necropsied, 26 (9.7%) had evidence of cardiac disease. In 15 (58%) birds with cardiac disease, changes consistent with CHF were evident and were sufficiently severe as to be considered the cause of death. The remaining 11 birds had cardiac lesions secondary to other systemic diseases; cardiac lesions were considered to be an incidental finding in these birds, and CHF was not evident. Of the 15 birds with CHF, 10 had evidence of right ventricular or biventricular failure, whereas only 5 had evidence of left ventricular failure. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Prevalence of cardiac disease in the psittacine birds reported here was similar to that seen clinically in other companion animals. The high incidence of right ventricular or biventricular heart failure in psittacine birds was similar to that for poultry in which lesions of right-sided heart failure predominate.  相似文献

Ten cases of histiocytic proliferative lesions in meat-type chickens associated in low incidence with infection by subgroup J avian leukosis virus (ALV) are described. Six were field cases in adult chickens from naturally infected flocks and four were from younger birds from transmission experiments with HPRS-103 ALV or the related acutely transforming ALV strains 17 and 879. The lesions were observed mostly in the spleen and in some cases in other organs. Microscopically, the lesions were comprised mainly of pleomorphic histiocyte-like cells admixed with variable numbers of lymphoid cells. More detailed studies were carried out on two birds at 4 and 7 wk of age following infection with HPRS-103 at 1 day of age. These birds had multiple small nodular lesions in the spleen, liver, and kidney that appeared similar cytologically to the more extensive lesions in older birds. Monoclonal antibodies specific for various lymphoid and nonlymphoid accessory cells were used in immunohistochemical studies to identify a predominance of cells of monocyte/macrophage lineage, and CD4- and CD8-positive lymphocytes, in the splenic nodules. Ultrastructural studies also revealed a similar mixed population of cells. Expression of ALV group-specific antigen, and gag and ALV-J env RNA, was not a marked feature of the histiocytic lesions. The proliferative histiocytic lesion is designated a histiocytic sarcomatosis.  相似文献

In two experiments, pigeons with bilateral lesions of the hyperstriatum were compared with unoperated control birds and operated control subjects having bilateral lesions of the neostriatum on tasks designed to test two hypotheses of hyperstriatal function. In Experiment 1, hyperstriatal lesions impaired both the acquisition and maintenance of autoshaped responding as well as maintenance responding in response-omission training. In Experiment 2, hyperstriatal birds displayed depressed levels of responding relative to control birds on a classical go-no-go alternation schedule. These results support the view that hyperstriatal lesions selectively disrupt classical conditioning and go against the view that hyperstriatal lesions exaggerate perseverative responding. A surprising aspect of the results was the performance of the operated control subjects that showed better performance in the acquisition of autoshaping and superior differentiation on the go-no-go schedule compared with the unoperated control birds. Hippocampal processing is often crucial for normal spatial learning and memory in both birds and mammals, suggesting a general similarity in avian and mammalian hippocampal function. However, few studies using birds have examined the effect of hippocampal lesions on spatial tasks analogous to those typically used with mammals. Therefore, we examined how hippocampal lesions would affect the performance of pigeons in a dry version of the water maze. Experiment 1 showed that hippocampal-lesioned birds were impaired in acquiring the location of hidden food in the maze. Experiment 2 showed that hippocampal-lesioned birds were not impaired when a single cue indicated the location of hidden food. These results support the notion that avian and mammalian hippocampal functions are quite similar, in terms of the tasks for which their processing is crucial and the tasks for which it is not. Four patients who presented with sudden onset of hip pain 7 to 11 years after successful porous-coated cementless hip arthroplasty are described. These four patients were all diagnosed to have fractures through osteolytic cysts in the greater trochanter. One patient was seen initially with a displaced fracture of the greater trochanter. Two patients were treated operatively with curettage of the cystic area and with polyethylene exchange. One of these patients underwent revision of the femoral component in addition to the polyethylene exchange. Two patients were treated nonoperatively. The fractures treated nonoperatively have healed and the patients have resumed their normal activities. This report should stimulate an awareness of fractures through cystic lesions of the greater trochanter as a late cause of hip pain after porous-coated cementless hip arthroplasty.  相似文献

In Alberta, cellulitis condemnations average 0.5% and are among the highest in Canada. Presently, all cellulitis-affected birds are condemned for fear of systemic infections and public health implications. In a slaughterhouse sample of 102 birds condemned with cellulitis, Escherichia coli was isolated from 83.3% of the lesions. All hearts were cultured and from 11.2% E. coli was recovered. Gross lesions of perihepatitis, infected oviducts, and arthritis were found in 11.2%, 6.7%, and 2.9% of the birds, respectively. Serotyping suggested that visceral infection occurs independent of cellulitis in at least half of the cases. There was no correlation between microscopic visceral lesions and positive bacterial cultures. Two E. coli isolates of serogroup 0157 produced no toxin and neither isolate produced CS31A, F107, or F1845 fimbriae. Cellulitis lesions ranged from 0.55 to 218.9 cm2. All lesions under 16 cm2 and 64% of lesions up to 48 cm2 were considered suitable for trimming.  相似文献

The major causes of leg weakness/lameness were investigated in two male commercial broiler flocks. The numbers of dead and lame birds culled from the flocks each day were recorded by the flock managers. Forty-four lame birds and 22 sound birds were examined postmortem during a period of six weeks and the proximal and distal end of each femur, tibiotarsus and tarsometatarsus were examined histologically. Attempts were made to isolate bacteria and viruses from the proximal end of each femur. Blood samples were examined for antibodies to chicken anaemia virus (CAV), infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) and Mycoplasma species. Bacterial chondronecrosis with osteomyelitis was identified in the proximal end of the femur of eight of the 44 lame birds, and in the proximal end of the tibiotarsus of a further bird (20.4 per cent). Gram-positive bacteria were present in all the lesions. Staphylococcus aureus was recovered from 62.5 per cent of the lesions confirmed by histology. Bacterial chondronecrosis associated with S aureus has thus been identified as an important cause of leg weakness in these commercial broilers. Lesions suggestive of the condition were visible macroscopically in only 11.1 per cent of the cases subsequently diagnosed by histology and bone histology is therefore required before a diagnosis can be excluded. Angular limb deformities (13.6 per cent) and spondylolisthesis (11.4 per cent) were the most common macroscopic lesions identified as causes of lameness. The overall incidence of tibial dyschondroplasia was similar in both the lame and sound broilers, but severe lesions were found only in lame birds (4.5 per cent).  相似文献

This study evaluated the response and susceptibility of four lines of ring-necked pheasants to infection with marble spleen disease (MSD) virus. Fifteen birds of the following lines were used: the standard ring-necked gamebird, the highly inbred jumbo white, the Sichuan, and the first-generation cross of the Sichuan and the standard gamebird. Baseline immune responses were assessed at 6 weeks of age by lymphoblastogenesis assays. All birds were orally challenged at 7 weeks of age with cell -culture-propagated MSD virus. Eight birds of each group were necropsied at 6-7 days post-inoculation (PI), and gross splenic lesions were recorded. Appropriate tissue sections were collected, fixed in 10% buffered formalin, and routinely processed for microscopic evaluation. The remaining birds were bled weekly from week 2 through week 8 Pl. Serum was tested for antibodies to MSD virus using a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. Results of the lymphoblastogenesis assays and the gross and microscopic lesion incidences indicated that variations did exist between several lines evaluated. The jumbo white pheasant had significantly higher lymphoblastogenesis stimulation index and was more resistant to developing gross and histologic lesions than was the standard ring-necked gamebird.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To study the natural history of clinically occult avascular necrosis (AVN) of the hip in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). METHODS: Sixty-six patients with SLE (without symptoms referable to the hip) receiving at least 5 mg/day prednisone for > or = 6 months were screened by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for AVN of the hip. A complete MRI evaluating class and percentage of femoral head involvement, AP and lateral radiographs of the hips, bone scan, and physical examination were performed for patients with positive MRI. Medical records were reviewed for serologic and clinical variables that might predict AVN. Repeat MRI were obtained at 3, 6, and 12 months to assess possible progression or resolution of the lesion. Patients with negative screening MRI underwent repeat screening after one year to assess the one year incidence rate. RESULTS: Eleven asymptomatic hips (8%) in 8 patients (12%) had MRI documented AVN. The percentage of femoral head involvement ranged from 1 to 46%. One lesion was MRI class B, the remaining lesions were class A. The radiographic stage of 10 hips was stage 1, the MRI class B hip was stage 2. Risk factors for clinically occult AVN included Afro-American origin, Raynaud's phenomenon, migraine headaches, and a maximal corticosteroid dose of at least 30 mg/day. After 12 months, 43 of 58 patients with an initially negative MRI underwent repeat screening examinations; no new lesions were observed. CONCLUSION: Clinically occult AVN of the hip is common in patients with SLE. The short term natural history of these lesions appears stable without spontaneous healing or clinical or radiographic progression. Risk factors for these asymptomatic lesions are similar to the risks for symptomatic AVN and surgical intervention appears not to be indicated in these patients.  相似文献

An outbreak of infectious bursal disease (IBD) occurred concurrently with acute septicaemic colibacillosis in 15 week old prelayer hens. The septicaemia was preceded by a subclinical IBD. Mortality in the outbreak began with lesions of septicaemia and Escherichia coli was isolated from the heart blood of the birds. After antibiotic treatment of the bacteraemia, mortality continued, spiked, declined and then ceased. IBD was confirmed by bursal lesions characterized by severe lymphocytolysis and cystic degeneration of the lymphoid follicles. Out of 253 birds, 42 (16.60%) died within eight days. The circumstances of the outbreak suggested that lack of IBD booster vaccination favoured the establishment of subclinical IBD, which suppressed immunity to predispose the birds to colisepticaemia.  相似文献

The performance of pigeons with hippocampal lesions was compared with that of unoperated and neostriatal-lesioned control Ss in 3 experiments. In Experiment 1, hippocampal-lesioned birds were retarded in the acquisition and the maintenance levels of autoshaped responding. However, the deficit was attenuated following the addition of a response contingency to the autoshaping schedule. In Experiment 2, the hippocampal-lesioned birds showed impaired performance on a differential reinforcement of low rates of responding schedule. From the high levels of responding in Experiment 2, underresponding was observed in hippocampal-lesioned birds relative to control Ss on return to the autoshaping schedule in Experiment 3. Concomitant pathologies (labral lesions, intra-/extra-osseous ganglia and stress bone marrow edema) in adult residual hip dysplasia (RHD) might influence the outcome of conservative hip surgery. The aim of our prospective clinical study was to assess the value of preoperative MR arthrography in diagnosing concomitant lesions and in making surgical decisions in RHD. The first 37 consecutive patients with a minimum follow-up of 18 months have been analysed. All 37 patients presented RHD with the clinical symptomatology of labral lesions and underwent routine preoperative MRA. According to clinical, radiological and MR arthrographical criteria, these 37 patients were subdivided into four therapeutic subgroups: (1) reorientation of the acetabulum using the T?nnis triple pelvic osteotomy (TPO); (2) intertrochanteric varisation osteotomy (IVO); (3) palliative decompression with only symptomatic partial resection of the torn labrum (PALL); (4) primary total hip replacement (TEP). Based on the preliminary clinical and radiological outcomes of these four subgroups, the following conclusions can be drawn: labral lesions are considered to be a sign of chronic joint instability. Therefore, acetabular malorientation should be corrected by redirectional osteotomy of the acetabulum (TPO-subgroup) even in low grades of RHD if labral lesions are present. "Palliative" labral resections without corrective osteotomy (PALL subgroup) in secondary osteoarthritis due to RHD are definitively obsolete, because they rapidly progress to severe osteoarthritis due to surgically accelerated joint instability. In RHD with highly osteoarthritic hip joints and concomitant lesions, one should not hesitate to perform primary THR even in young patients.  相似文献

The avian hippocampal formation (Hf) plays an important role in spatial memory for food storing. Here we examined the effects of excitotoxic lesions of the Hf and subsequent neural transplantation on a one-trial associative memory task in zebra finches. The results showed (1) that small ibotenic acid lesions of the dorsal Hf of zebra finches produced significant spatial memory impairments compared with controls, sham-lesioned birds, and prelesion performance; and (2) that Hf-lesioned birds given transplants of embryonic hippocampal (H) tissue, but not those given transplants of embryonic anterior telencephalon (AT) tissue, showed a significant reversal of the performance deficits on the spatial memory task. Lesioned-only birds and lesioned birds given H or AT transplants that did not survive did not show behavioral improvement. Sham-lesioned and untreated control birds maintained good performance throughout the experiment. The H and AT transplants were found to be growing partially within the Hf and partially within the underlying ventricle. The transplants appeared healthy and contained neurons with beaded and unbeaded fibers (shown by immunohistochemistry with antibodies to parvalbumin, substance P, and a 200 kDa neurofilament protein). Blood vessels and erythrocytes were also present within the transplants. The results show that neural transplants can survive within the bird brain and that small lesions of the Hf produce significant spatial memory deficits that can only be reversed by surviving homologous H transplants, and not by heterologous telencephalon transplants.  相似文献

The immunogenicity of a tissue culture-derived vaccine generated from an Eimeria tenella-infected cell line in a serologically defined bird line, and the ability to confer protection against homologous challenge in young chicks was examined. The cell line, SB-CEV-1/F7, was infected with E. tenella sporozoites and the resulting 72-h postinfection cell-free supernatants were adjuvanted and used to immunize Leghorn chicks homozygous for the B19 haplotype. Peripheral blood and splenic lymphocytes from these immunized birds proliferated in vitro in response to both sporozoite and SB-CEV-1/F7 tissue culture-derived parasite antigens. In addition, splenic immune lymphocytes obtained from birds previously exposed to E. tenella in vivo responded to these tissue culture-derived parasite antigens in vitro. To evaluate the efficacy of the vaccine, B19B19 chicks were vaccinated s.c. with adjuvanted 72-h postinfection cell-free supernatants or an ammonium sulfate precipitate derivative thereof, orally boosted, and then subjected to homologous parasite challenge at 10 d of age. The level of protection (body weight gain, cecal lesions) was assessed 6 d after challenge. Performance results from four battery trials demonstrated that vaccinated birds were significantly protected against weight loss compared to unimmunized, challenged controls. In addition, in two of the four trials, vaccinated birds were significantly protected against lesions. These results provide strong evidence that tissue culture-derived parasite antigens obtained from the E. tenella-infected SB-CEV-1/F7 cell line are immunogenic in birds and can provide partial protection against E. tenella clinical coccidiosis.  相似文献

Pigeons with hyperstriatal lesions and unoperated controls were given minimal or extended side-key pretraining prior to acquisition of a position discrimination. Operated birds were impaired following extended, but not minimal, pretraining. The birds then acquired a simultaneous color discrimination with posiversals of the color discrimination, operated birds were impaired, and this was primarily due to an exaggeration of perseverative responding to the former positive stimulus. Analysis of choice latencies found no tendency towards an exaggerated "Mahut effect" in hyperstriatals and indicated that operated subjects used the same solution strategies as normals. These findings directly contradict the response-shift account of hyperstriatal function and indicate a return to the response-inhibition hypothesis.  相似文献

A study of field turkeys was undertaken in order to determine the involvement of relative immunological differences in the etiology of turkey osteomyelitis complex (TOC). Lame and normal turkeys were sampled from commercial flocks just prior to processing in two separate trials. After testing for functions of both humoral and cellular immunity, the turkeys were necropsied and examined for lesions of TOC. There were significantly higher relative spleen and over weights and significantly lower body weights and relative bursal weights in birds with TOC. The birds with TOC had lower response to phytohemagglutinin-P in both in vivo and in vitro tests as well as lower circulating lymphocyte counts and higher monocyte, heterophil, and total white blood cell counts. There was a significantly higher antibody response to sheep red blood cells in turkeys with TOC, whereas antibody response to Salmonella pullorum antigen was not different. There were no significant differences in the percentages of mononuclear cells or heterophils able to phagocytize bacteria or latex particles, or kill bacteria; however, the heterophils from turkeys with TOC lesions did phagocytize significantly fewer latex particles per cell than did those of the healthy turkeys. Total serum protein, uric acid, and blood urea nitrogen levels were higher in birds with TOC, whereas hemoglobin, iron, alkaline phosphatase, and gamma-glutamyl-transferase levels were lower. Although many of the differences in birds with TOC could be caused by the normal host reaction to infection, further study may reveal innate differences that contribute to susceptibility to TOC.  相似文献

To determine whether a relationship exists between long bone distortion and tibial dyschondroplasia (TD), the hock joints of Large White commercial male turkeys were examined using low intensity x-ray imaging (hand-held lixiscope). All lame birds with long bone distortion and 96 control birds without lameness were examined at 8.3 and 12.3 wk of age for TD lesions using a lixiscope. Results indicated that the incidence of TD was less than 2% at 8.3 wk of age. The incidence increased to 21% by 12.3 wk of age. The TD lesions at 12 wk of age were considered mild covering only one-fourth of the growth plate. Chi-square analysis indicated that control turkeys without long bone distortion were just as likely to have TD lesions as were lame turkeys with long bone distortion. Under the conditions of the present experiment, TD did not appear to be a significant skeletal problem in Large White commercial male turkeys prior to 12.3 wk of age. Only 5 out of 37 (14%) toms with long bone distortion at 12.3 wk of age had TD lesions, suggesting that the valgus-varus deformity may be independent of TD.  相似文献

1. A quantitative and longitudinal analysis of locomotion was made after bilateral lesions of the dorsolateral funiculi (DLF) and/or the dorsal columns (DC) in the lower thoracic cord (T12 or T13) in five adult cats. All cats were chronically implanted several weeks before the spinal cord lesion to permit the recording of electromyographic (EMG) activity from selected flexor and extensor muscles of the fore- and hindlimbs of each side. This allowed each cat to act as its own control when comparing the pattern and amplitude of EMG activity before and after the lesion. All experiments were also videotaped to allow an analysis of the kinematic changes before and after the lesions. Kinematic data were only analyzed for the side of the cat facing the camera; for all cats this was the left side. 2. After recovery periods of 2-5 mo, wheat-germ-agglutinated horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) was injected caudal to the lesion site (normally at L2). The extent of the lesion was verified both histologically and by evaluating the number of HRP-labeled neurons in different supraspinal structures. These analyses showed that the cortico- and rubrospinal tracts (CST and RST, respectively) were completely interrupted, bilaterally, in two of five of the cats; in one of these cats the DCs were also interrupted. In the other three cats there was more variable damage, and the CST and RST were only completely interrupted on the right side of one of these animals. The DCs were completely sectioned in two of these cats. 3. During the 1st wk subsequent to the lesion, most cats had difficulty in supporting their weight and in walking. However, within 10 days all were able to walk, unaided, for extended periods on the treadmill at speeds of at least 0.35 m/s. In the two cats with the complete, bilateral DLF lesions, the animals dragged both their left and right hindpaws along the treadmill belt during the swing phase of the step cycle (paw drag) throughout the testing period of 3-5 mo. In the other three cats, paw drag in either hindlimb was only seen in the 1st 2-3 wk after the lesions, with the exception of the cat with the complete lesion of the DLF on the right side, which showed sustained paw drag in the right hindlimb throughout the testing period. 4. Significant increases in step cycle and swing duration following the lesion were observed only in the two cats with the largest lesions. In all five cats, statistical comparisons of the slopes from a linear regression analysis showed that the relationship between swing and step cycle duration was unchanged by the lesions. 5. Joint angles in the left hindlimb of the two cats with the largest lesions were generally smaller (more flexed) than in the prelesion controls. This was particularly true for the knee and ankle joints. The other three cats showed changed joint angle values for the hip, knee, and ankle only in the 1st 2-3 wk after the lesions. All of the cats, except the one with the least damage to the left DLF, exhibited increased joint excursions at the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint of the left limb throughout the recovery period. 6. There were sustained changes in the coupling between the hip and the knee of the left limb, together with smaller changes in the coupling of the knee and ankle in the two cats with the complete lesions of the DLF. In contrast to the prelesion controls, flexion at the ankle occurred before swing onset in these same two cats. The changes in the coordination between the hip and the knee were associated with changes in the temporal coupling between the hip flexor, sartorius (Srt), and the knee flexor, semitendinosus (St). Despite some improvement, the coupling between these two muscles never fully recovered to the prelesion values.
