Karen L. Hanscom received the 2001 International Humanitarian Award. She was given this award for her commitment to human rights, to the healing of torture victims, and to educating the world community about torture. She has touched the lives of hundreds of women who survived the civil war in Guatemala through her work with the Puentes de Paz health project. Her training programs have contributed to increased understanding of the needs of torture victims by a wide variety of professionals and community groups. XVIII International Congress of Psychology.

This document announces that for the first time in the history of our science an international congress of psychologists will be convened in the USSR. The XVIII International Congress of Psychology, organized by the Soviet Psychological Society under the auspices of the International Union of Scientific Psychology, will take an outstanding place among other congresses for the scope of the problems which will be discussed at it, as well as for the wide representation of psychologists of different countries who will participate in its work. It will also be distinguished for the character of its organization. The Congress will take place in Moscow between August 4 and 11, 1966. The programme of its plenary sessions will include, along with the opening speech of Prof. A. N. Leontiev, President of the Congress, three lectures which will be delivered by celebrated psychologists of different countries. Prof. Jean Piaget (Switzerland) will devote his lecture to the question of the place of psychology among other sciences; Prof. Neal Miller (USA) will consider the achievements of modern psychophysiology in the field of studying the problem of drives; Prof. A. International Psychological Decade.

In 1979 psychology will celebrate the centennial of what many psychologists have found it convenient to consider the beginning of scientific psychology--the opening of Wundt's laboratory in Leipzig in 1879. Looking ahead to that occasion the authors suggests that we might use it as the conclusion of what could be an effort to accelerate the development of scientific psychology and its applications worldwide. The author propose an International Psychological Decade (IPD) to cover the period 1969 to 1979, wherein a number of extra activities would be undertaken to increase our knowledge and use of psychology. Review of The history of the International Union of Psychological Science..

Reviews the book, The history of the International Union of Psychological Science by Mark R. Rosenzweig, Wayne W. Holtzman, Michel Sabourin, and David Belanger (2000). In 1997, the Executive Committee of the International Union of Psychological Science initiated a project to "trace the development of the International Union of Psychological Science (IUPsyS), not only since its founding at the 14th International Congress of Psychology at Stockholm, 1951, but going back to 1881 when a young Polish psychologist first proposed the ideas of an international congress and of an international association of psychological societies" (p. xi). The authors have managed to include a great deal of information, and it must be said that the result occasionally resembles a book of lists (e.g., lists of who attended the various congresses, the percentage of attendees from each country, etc.). Read from cover to cover, the book provides a very useful compendium of the proceedings of IUPsyS and its predecessors. A very strong feature of this book is its many photographs. Throughout the book there are several very useful tables that provide lists of the members of the various congresses as well as the officers of the IUPsyS. While it is as much a reference book as a history, it is still a very useful and interesting reference book that should be in every university library.
