The uncontrollable dendritic growth of metallic lithium during repeated cycling in carbonate electrolytes is a crucial obstacle hindering the practical use of Li-metal batteries (LMBs). Among numerous approaches proposed to mitigate the intrinsic constraints of Li metal, the design of a functional separator is an attractive approach to effectively suppress the growth of Li dendrites because direct contact with both the Li metal surface and the electrolyte is maintained. Here, a newly designed all-in-one separator containing bifunctional CaCO3 nanoparticles (CPP separator) is proposed to achieve the flattening of Li deposits on the Li electrode. Strong interactions between the highly polar CaCO3 nanoparticles and the polar solvent reduces the ionic radius of the Li+-solvent complex, thus increasing the Li+ transference number and leading to a reduced concentration overpotential in the electrolyte-filled separator. Furthermore, the integration of CaCO3 nanoparticles into the separator induces the spontaneous formation of mechanically-strong and lithiophilic CaLi2 at the Li/separator interface, which effectively decreases the nucleation overpotential toward Li plating. As a result, the Li deposits exhibit dendrite-free planar morphologies, thus enabling excellent cycling performance in LMBs configured with a high-Ni cathode in a carbonate electrolyte under practical operating conditions.  相似文献

Electrolyte additive is an effective strategy to inhibit the uncontrolled growth of Li dendrites for lithium metal batteries (LMBs). However, most of the additives are complex synthesis and prone to decompose in cycling. Herein, in order to guide the homogeneous deposition of Li+, carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) as electrolyte additives are successfully designed and synthesized by microwave (M-CPDs) and hydrothermal (H-CPDs) approaches. The controllable functional groups containing N or O (especially pyridinic-N, pyrrolic-N, and carboxyl group) enable CPDs to keep stable in electrolytes for at least 3 months. Meanwhile, the clusters formed between CPDs and Li+ through electrostatic interaction effectively guide the uniform Li dispersion and limit the “tip effect” and dendrite formation. Moreover, as lithiophilic groups increase, the strong electrostatic interference for the solvation effect of Li+ in the electrolyte is formed, which induces faster Li+ diffusion/transfer. As expected, H-CPDs achieve the ultra-even Li+ transfer. The corresponding Li//LiFePO4 full cell delivers a high capacity retention rate of 93.8% after 200 cycles, which is much higher than that of the cells without additives (61.2%) and with M-CPDs (83.7%) as additives. The strategy in this work provides a theoretical direction for CPDs as electrolyte additives used in energy storage devices.  相似文献

The use of poly(1,3-dioxolane) (PDOL) electrolyte for lithium batteries has gained attention due to its high ionic conductivity, low cost, and potential for large-scale applications. However, its compatibility with Li metal needs improvement to build a stable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) toward metallic Li anode for practical lithium batteries. To address this concern, this study utilized a simple InCl3-driven strategy for polymerizing DOL and building a stable LiF/LiCl/LiIn hybrid SEI, confirmed through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and cryogenic-transmission electron microscopy (Cryo-TEM). Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and finite element simulation (FES) verify that the hybrid SEI exhibits not only excellent electron insulating properties but also fast transport properties of Li+. Moreover, the interfacial electric field shows an even potential distribution and larger Li+ flux, resulting in uniform dendrite-free Li deposition. The use of the LiF/LiCl/LiIn hybrid SEI in Li/Li symmetric batteries shows steady cycling for 2000 h, without experiencing a short circuit. The hybrid SEI also provided excellent rate performance and outstanding cycling stability in LiFePO4/Li batteries, with a high specific capacity of 123.5 mAh g−1 at 10 C rate. In view of their high lithium storage capability, phosphorus-based anodes are promising for lithium-ion batteries. However, the low reduction potential (0.74 V versus Li+/Li) of the commonly used ethylene carbonate-based electrolyte does not allow the early formation of a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) prior to the initial phosphorus alloying reaction (1.5 V versus Li+/Li). In the absence of a protective SEI, the phosphorus anode develops cracks, creating additional P/electrolyte interfaces. This results in the loss of P and the formation of a discontinuous SEI, all of which greatly reduce the electrochemical performance of the anode. Here, the effect of solvent reduction potential on the structure of the SEI is investigated. It is found that solvents with a high reduction potential, such as fluoroethylene carbonate, decompose to form an SEI concomitantly with the P alloying reaction. This results in a continuous, mechanically robust, and Li3PO4-rich SEI with improved Li-ion conductivity. These attributes significantly improve the cyclic stability and rate performance of the phosphorus-based anode.  相似文献

Fluorinated solid‐electrolyte interphase (SEI) derived from fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) is particularly favored for dendrite suppression in lithium metal batteries because of the high Young's modulus (≈64.9 Gpa) and low electronic conductivity (10?31 S cm?1) of LiF. However, the transportation ability of Li+ in this fluorinated SEI under high current densities is limited by the low ionic conductivity of LiF (≈10?12 S cm?1). Herein, by rational design, 0.1 m lithium bisoxalatodifluorophosphate (LiDFBOP) is adopted to modify fluorinated SEI in FEC based electrolyte for fast charging lithium metal batteries. Benefiting from the synergetic effect of LiDFBOP and FEC, a fluorinated SEI rich in LiF and LixPOyFz species can be yielded, which can further improve the stability and ionic conductivity of SEI for fast Li+ transportation. Meanwhile, the average coulombic efficiency for Li plating/stripping is improved from 92.0% to 96.7%, thus promoting stable cycling of Li||Li symmetrical batteries with dendrite free morphologies, even at high current densities (3.0 mA cm?2) and high plating/stripping capacities (3.0 mAh cm?2). More attractively, in practical Li||LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 batteries, the cycling life at 1C and rate capacities at 6C are also significantly improved. Therefore, the synergetic effect of LiDFBOP and FEC provides great potential for achieving advanced lithium metal batteries with fast charging ability.  相似文献

The application of solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) is still inherently limited by the unstable lithium (Li)/electrolyte interface, despite the advantages of security, flexibility, and workability of SPEs. Herein, the Li/electrolyte interface is modified by introducing Li2S additive to harvest stable all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Cryo-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) results demonstrate a mosaic interface between poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) electrolytes and Li metal anodes, in which abundant crystalline grains of Li, Li2O, LiOH, and Li2CO3 are randomly distributed. Besides, cryo-TEM visualization, combined with molecular dynamics simulations, reveals that the introduction of Li2S accelerates the decomposition of N(CF3SO2)2 and consequently promotes the formation of abundant LiF nanocrystals in the Li/PEO interface. The generated LiF is further verified to inhibit the breakage of C O bonds in the polymer chains and prevents the continuous interface reaction between Li and PEO. Therefore, the all-solid-state LMBs with the LiF-enriched interface exhibit improved cycling capability and stability in a cell configuration with an ultralong lifespan over 1800 h. This work is believed to open up a new avenue for rational design of high-performance all-solid-state LMBs.  相似文献

Solid‐state electrolytes have recently attracted significant attention toward safe and high‐energy lithium chemistries. In particular, polyethylene oxide (PEO)‐based composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) have shown outstanding mechanical flexibility and manufacturing feasibility. However, their limited ionic conductivity, poor electrochemical stability, and insufficient mechanical strength are yet to be addressed. In this work, a novel CPE supported by Li+‐containing SiO2 nanofibers is developed. The nanofibers are obtained via sol–gel electrospinning, during which lithium sulfate is in situ introduced into the nanofibers. The uniform doping of Li2SO4 in SiO2 nanofibers increases the Li+ conductivity of SiO2, generates mesopores on the surface of SiO2 nanofibers, and improves the wettability between SiO2 and PEO. As a result, the obtained SiO2/Li2SO4/PEO CPE yields high Li+ conductivity (1.3 × 10?4 S cm?1 at 60 °C, ≈4.9 times the Li2SO4‐free CPE) and electrochemical stability. Furthermore, the all‐solid‐state LiFePO4‐Li full cell demonstrates stable cycling with high capacities (over 80 mAh g?1, 50 cycles at C/2 at 60 °C). The Li+‐containing mesoporous SiO2 nanofibers show great potential as the filler for CPEs. Similar methods can be used to incorporate Li salts into other filler materials for CPEs.  相似文献

Constructing a 3D composite Li metal anode (LMA) along with the engineering of artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is a promising strategy for achieving dendrite-free Li deposition and high cycling stability. The nanostructure of artificial SEI is closely related to the performance of the LMA. Herein, the self-grown process and morphology of in situ formed Li2S during lithiation of CuxS is studied systematically, and a large-sized sheet-like Li2S layer as an artificial SEI is in situ generated on the inner surface of a 3D continuous porous Cu skeleton (3DCu@Li2S-S). The sheet-like Li2S layer with few interfacial pitfalls (Cu/Li2S heterogeneous interface) possesses enhanced diffusion of Li ions. And the continuous porous structure provides transport channels for lithium-ion transport. As a result, the 3DCu@Li2S-S presents a high Coulombic efficiency (99.3%), long cycle life (500 cycles), and high-rate performance (10 mA cm−2). Furthermore, Li/3DCu@Li2S anode fabricated by thermal infusion method inherits the synergistic advantages of sheet-like Li2S and continuous porous structure. The Li/3DCu@Li2S anode shows significantly enhanced cycling life in both liquid and solid electrolytes. This work provides a new concept to design artificial SEI for LMA with high safe and high performance.  相似文献

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are promising for next-generation high-energy-density batteries owing to the highest specific capacity and the lowest potential of Li metal anode. However, the LMBs are normally confronted with drastic capacity fading under extremely cold conditions mainly due to the freezing issue and sluggish Li+ desolvation process in commercial ethylene carbonate (EC)-based electrolyte at ultra-low temperature (e.g., below −30 °C). To overcome the above challenges, an anti-freezing carboxylic ester of methyl propionate (MP)-based electrolyte with weak Li+ coordination and low-freezing temperature (below −60 °C) is designed, and the corresponding LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) cathode exhibits a higher discharge capacity of 84.2 mAh g−1 and energy density of 195.0 Wh kg−1cathode than that of the cathode (1.6 mAh g−1 and 3.9 Wh kg−1cathode) working in commercial EC-based electrolytes for NCM811‖ Li cell at −60 °C. Molecular dynamics simulation, Raman spectra, and nuclear magnetic resonance characterizations reveal that rich mobile Li+ and the unique solvation structure with weak Li+ coordination are achieved in MP-based electrolyte, which collectively facilitate the Li+ transference process at low temperature. This work provides fundamental insights into low-temperature electrolytes by regulating solvation structure, and offers the basic guidelines for the design of low-temperature electrolytes for LMBs.  相似文献

Rechargeable magnesium (Mg) metal batteries are a promising candidate for “post-Li-ion batteries” due to their high capacity, high abundance, and most importantly, highly reversible and dendrite-free Mg metal anode. However, the formation of passivating surface film rather than Mg2+-conducting solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on Mg anode surface has always restricted the development of rechargeable Mg batteries. A stable SEI is constructed on the surface of Mg metal anode by the partial decomposition of a pristine Li electrolyte in the electrochemical process. This Li electrolyte is easily prepared by dissolving lithium tetrakis(hexafluoroisopropyloxy)borate (Li[B(hfip)4]) in dimethoxyethane. It is noteworthy that Mg2+ can be directly introduced into this Li electrolyte during the initial electrochemical cycles for in situ forming a hybrid Mg2+/Li+ electrolyte, and then the cycled electrolyte can conduct Mg-ion smoothly. The existence of this as-formed SEI blocks the further parasitic reaction of Mg metal anode with electrolyte and enables this electrolyte enduring long-term electrochemical cycles stably. This approach of constructing superior SEI on Mg anode surface and exploiting novel Mg electrolyte provides a new avenue for practical application of high-performance rechargeable Mg batteries.  相似文献

Lithium (Li) metal batteries (LMBs) are enjoying a renaissance due to the high energy densities. However, they still suffer from the problem of uncontrollable Li dendrite and pulverization caused by continuous cracking of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers. To address these issues, developing spontaneously built robust polymer‐reinforced SEI layers during electrochemical conditioning can be a simple yet effective solution. Herein, a robust homopolymer of cyclic carbonate urethane methacrylate is presented as the polymer matrix through an in situ polymerization method, in which cyclic carbonate units can participate in building a stable polymer‐integrated SEI layer during cycling. The as‐investigated gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) assembled LiCoO2/Li metal batteries exhibit a fantastic cyclability with a capacity retention of 92% after 200 cycles at 0.5 C (1 C = 180 mAh g?1), evidently exceeding that of the counterpart using liquid electrolytes. It is noted that the anionic ring‐opening polymerization of the cyclic carbonate units on the polymer close to the Li metal anodes enables a mechanically reinforced SEI layer, thus rendering excellent compatibility with Li anodes. The in situ formed polymer‐reinforced SEI layers afford a splendid strategy for developing high voltage resistant GPEs compatible with Li metal anodes toward high energy LMBs.  相似文献

Lithium (Li) metal anodes (LMAs) are promising anode candidates for realizing high-energy-density batteries. However, the formation of unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers on Li metal is harmful for stable Li cycling; hence, enhancing the physical/chemical properties of SEI layers is important for stabilizing LMAs. Herein, thiourea (TU, CH4N2S) is introduced as a new catalyzing agent for LiNO3 reduction to form robust inorganic-rich SEI layers containing abundant Li3N. Due to the unique molecular structure of TU, the TU molecules adsorb on the Cu electrode by forming Cu S bond and simultaneously form hydrogen bonding with other hydrogen bonds accepting species such as NO3 and TFSI through its N H bonds, leading to their catalyzed reduction and hence the formation of inorganic-rich SEI layer with abundant Li3N, LiF, and Li2S/Li2S2. Particularly, this TU-modified SEI layer shows a lower film resistance and better uniformity compared to the electrochemically and naturally formed SEI layers, enabling planar Li growth without any other material treatments and hence improving the cyclic stability in Li/Cu half-cells and Li@Cu/LiFePO4 full-cells.  相似文献

Sulfonated polymers have long been used as proton-conducting materials in fuel cells, and their ionic transport features are highly attractive for electrolytes in lithium-ion/metal batteries (LIBs/LMBs). However, most studies are still based on a preconceived notion of using them directly as polymeric ionic carriers, which precludes exploring them as nanoporous media to construct efficient lithium ions (Li+) transport network. Here, effective Li+-conducting channels realized by swelling nanofibrous Nafion is demonstrated, which is a classical sulfonated polymer in fuel cells. The sulfonic acid groups, interact with LIBs liquid electrolytes to form porous ionic matrix of Nafion and assist partial desolvation of Li+-solvates to further enhance Li+ transport. Li-symmetric cells and Li-metal full cells (Li4Ti5O12 or high-voltage LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 as a cathode) with such membrane show excellent cycling performance and stabilized Li-metal anode. The finding provides a strategy to convert the vast sulfonated polymer family into efficient Li+ electrolyte, promoting the development of high-energy–density LMBs.  相似文献

Lithium (Li) metal batteries (LMBs) provide superior energy densities far beyond current Li-ion batteries (LIBs) but practical applications are hindered by uncontrolled dendrite formation and the build-up of dead Li in “hostless” Li metal anodes. To circumvent these issues, we created a 3D framework of a carbon paper (CP) substrate decorated with lithiophilic nanowires (silicon (Si), germanium (Ge), and SiGe alloy NWs) that provides a robust host for efficient stripping/plating of Li metal. The lithiophilic Li22Si5, Li22(Si0.5Ge0.5)5, and Li22Ge5 formed during rapid Li melt infiltration prevented the formation of dead Li and dendrites. Li22Ge5/Li covered CP hosts delivered the best performance, with the lowest overpotentials of 40 mV (three times lower than pristine Li) when cycled at 1 mA cm−2/1 mAh cm−2 for 1000 h and at 3 mA cm−2/3 mAh cm−2 for 500 h. Ex situ analysis confirmed the ability of the lithiophilic Li22Ge5 decorated samples to facilitate uniform Li deposition. When paired with sulfur, LiFePO4, and NMC811 cathodes, the CP-LiGe/Li anodes delivered 200 cycles with 82%, 93%, and 90% capacity retention, respectively. The discovery of the highly stable, lithiophilic NW decorated CP hosts is a promising route toward stable cycling LMBs and provides a new design motif for hosted Li metal anodes.  相似文献

Uncontrolled ion transport and susceptible SEI films are the key factors that induce lithium dendrite growth, which hinders the development of lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Herein, a TpPa-2SO3H covalent organic framework (COF) nanosheet adhered cellulose nanofibers (CNF) on the polypropylene separator (COF@PP) is successfully designed as a battery separator to respond to the aforementioned issues. The COF@PP displays dual-functional characteristics with the aligned nanochannels and abundant functional groups of COFs, which can simultaneously modulate ion transport and SEI film components to build robust lithium metal anodes. The Li//COF@PP//Li symmetric cell exhibits stable cycling over 800 h with low ion diffusion activation energy and fast lithium ion transport kinetics, which effectively suppresses the dendrite growth and improves the stability of Li+ plating/stripping. Moreover, The LiFePO4//Li cells with COF@PP separator deliver a high discharge capacity of 109.6 mAh g−1 even at a high current density of 3 C. And it exhibits excellent cycle stability and high capacity retention due to the robust LiF-rich SEI film induced by COFs. This COFs-based dual-functional separator promotes the practical application of lithium metal batteries.  相似文献

Lithium metal is the only anode material that can enable the Li−O2 battery to realize its high theoretical energy density (≈3500 Wh kg−1). However, the inherent uncontrolled dendrite growth and serious corrosion limitations of lithium metal anodes make it experience fast degradation and impede the practical application of Li−O2 batteries. Herein, a multifunctional complementary LiF/F-doped carbon gradient protection layer on a lithium metal anode by one-step in situ reaction of molten Li with poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) is developed. The abundant strong polar C-F bonds in the upper carbon can not only act as Li+ capture site to pre-uniform Li+ flux but also regulate the electron configuration of LiF to make Li+ quasi-spontaneously diffuse from carbon to LiF surface, avoiding the strong Li+-adhesion-induced Li aggregation. For LiF, it can behave as fast Li+ conductor and homogenize the nucleation sites on lithium, as well as ensure firm connection with lithium. As a result, this well-designed protection layer endows the Li metal anode with dendrite-free plating/stripping and anticorrosion behavior both in ether-based and carbonate ester-based electrolytes. Even applied protected Li anodes in Li−O2 batteries, its superiority can still be maintained, making the cell achieve stable cycling performance (180 cycles).  相似文献

Li‐O2 batteries are claimed to be one of the future energy storage technologies. Great number of scientific and technological challenges should be solved first to transform Li‐O2 battery from a promise to real practical devices. Proposed mechanisms for oxygen reduction assume a reservoir of solved Li+ ions in the electrolyte. However, the role that adsorbed Li+ on the electrode surface might have on the overall oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has not deserved much attention. Adsorbed Li+ consumption is monitored here using impedance measurements from extended electrochemical double layer capacitance, which depends on the carbon matrix surface area. The presence of O2 drastically reduces the amount of adsorbed Li+, signaling the kinetic competition between Li+ surface adsorption and its consumption, only for potentials corresponding to the oxygen reduction reaction. Noticeably double layer capacitance remains unaltered after cycling. This fact suggests that the ORR products (Li2O2 and Li2CO3) are not covering the internal electrode surface, but deposited on the outer electrode‐contact interface, hindering thereby the subsequent reaction. Current results show new insights into the discharge mechanism of Li‐O2 batteries and reveal the evidence of Li+ desorption from the C surface when the ORR starts.  相似文献

Thanks to its high specific capacity and low electrochemical potential, lithium metal is an ideal anode for next-generation high-energy batteries. However, the unstable heterogeneous surface of lithium gives rise to safety and efficiency concerns that prevent it from being utilized in practical applications. In this work, the formation of a closed-host bi-layer solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) improves the stability of lithium metal anode. This is successfully realized by forming an interconnected porous LiF-rich artificial SEI in contact with Li metal, and a dense, stable in-situ formed upper layer SEI. The porous layer increases the number of Li/LiF interfaces, which reduces local volume fluctuations and improves Li+ diffusion along these interfaces. Additionally, the tortuous porous structure guides uniform Li+ flux distribution and mechanically suppresses dendrite propagation. The dense upper layer of the SEI accomplishes a closed-host design, preventing continuous consumption of active materials. The duality of a dense top layer with porous bottom layer led to extended cycle life and improved rate performance, evidenced with symmetric cell testing, as well as full cell testing paired with sulfur and LiFePO4 (LFP) cathodes. This work is a good example of a rational design of the SEI, based on comprehensive consideration of various critical factors to improve Li-metal anode stability, and highlights a new pathway to improve cycling and rate performances of Li metal batteries.  相似文献

Lithium (Li) metal anode (LMA) is highly considered as a desirable anode material for next-generation rechargeable batteries because of its high specific capacity and the lowest reduction potential. However, uncontrollable growth of Li dendrites, large volume change, and unstable interfaces between LMA and electrolyte hinder its practical application. Herein, a novel in situ formed artificial gradient composite solid electrolyte interphase (GCSEI) layer for highly stable LMAs is proposed. The inner rigid inorganics (Li2S and LiF) with high Li+ ion affinity and high electron tunneling barrier are beneficial to achieve homogeneous Li plating, while the flexible polymers (poly(ethylene oxide) and poly(vinylidene fluoride)) on the surface of GCSEI layer can accommodate the volume change. Furthermore, the GCSEI layer demonstrates fast Li+ ion transport capability and increased Li+ ion diffusion kinetics. Accordingly, the modified LMA enables excellent cycling stability (over 1000 h at 3 mA cm−2) in the symmetric cell using carbonate electrolyte, and the corresponding Li-GCSEI||LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 full cell demonstrates 83.4% capacity retention after 500 cycles. This work offers a new strategy for the design of dendrite-free LMAs for practical applications.  相似文献
