Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are effective fillers/reinforcements regarding improving the properties of polymer. In the present paper, carboxylic acid functionalized CNTs were used to modify epoxy with intent to develop a nanocomposite matrix for hybrid multiscale composites combining benefits of nanoscale reinforcement with well-established fibrous composites. CNTs were dispersed in epoxy by using high energy sonication. At low contents of CNTs, hybrid multiscale composites specimens were manufactured via resin transfer molding (RTM) process. The processibility of CNTs/epoxy systems was explored with respect to their viscosity. The dispersion quality and re-agglomeration behavior of CNTs in epoxy were characterized using optical microscope. A CNTs loading of 0.025 wt% significantly improved the glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the hybrid multiscale composites. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to examine the fracture surface of the failed specimens. It is demonstrated that the addition of small amount of CNTs (0.025 wt%) to epoxy for the fabrication of multiscale carbon fabric composites via RTM route effectively improves the matrix-dominated properties of polymer based composites. Hybridization efficiency in carbon fiber reinforced composites using CNTs is found to be highly dependent on the changes in the dispersion state of CNTs in epoxy.  相似文献

Carbon fiber felt with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were prepared by immersing three-dimensional (3D) felt into CNT aqueous solution (with dispersant) followed by removing water with different drying methods. Epoxy resin was then introduced into the felt to obtain 3D fiber felt/CNTs modified epoxy composites. This paper highlights the effect of drying method on macro-morphologies of the felt, morphological dispersion of CNTs and some relevant properties of the composites, including electrical conductivity and flexural performance. The results demonstrate that compared to the commonly used heat drying method, freeze drying technique possesses obvious advantages for the fabrication of fiber felt/CNT modified epoxy composites.  相似文献

Drawing, winding, and pressing techniques were used to produce horizontally aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) sheets from free-standing vertically aligned CNT arrays. The aligned CNT sheets were used to develop aligned CNT/epoxy composites through hot-melt prepreg processing with a vacuum-assisted system. Effects of CNT diameter change on the mechanical properties of aligned CNT sheets and their composites were examined. The reduction of the CNT diameter considerably increased the mechanical properties of the aligned CNT sheets and their composites. The decrease of the CNT diameter along with pressing CNT sheets drastically enhanced the mechanical properties of the CNT sheets and CNT/epoxy composites. Raman spectra measurements showed improvement of the CNT alignment in the pressed CNT/epoxy composites. Research results suggest that aligned CNT/epoxy composites with high strength and stiffness are producible using aligned CNT sheets with smaller-diameter CNTs.  相似文献

A new method to realize the uniform coating of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to carbon fibers (CFs) has been developed, which enables the scalable fabrication of CNT containing CF/epoxy composites. In this method, CNTs are treated by cationic polymers, then, the CNTs are coated to CFs by immersion into a CNT/water suspension. Good dispersion is achieved by repulsive force between positively charged CNTs and uniform coating of the CNTs is achieved by attractive forces between positively charged CNTs and negatively charged CFs. It is found that the use of specific cationic polymers including polyethyleneimine (PEI) results in stable CNT/water suspensions, and uniform coating of the CNTs. Single fiber fragmentation tests of the CF/epoxy composites were conducted to evaluate the strength of interface and interphase under shear loading. The results show that the combination of epoxy resin sizing and PEI treated CNT coating to CFs results in high interfacial shear strength.  相似文献

Carbon nanotubes (CNT) in their various forms have great potential for use in the development of multifunctional multiscale laminated composites due to their unique geometry and properties. Recent advancements in the development of CNT hierarchical composites have mostly focused on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). In this work, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) were used to develop nano-modified carbon fiber/epoxy laminates. A functionalization technique based on reduced SWCNT was employed to improve dispersion and epoxy resin-nanotube interaction. A commercial prepregging unit was then used to impregnate unidirectional carbon fiber tape with a modified epoxy system containing 0.1 wt% functionalized SWCNT. Impact and compression-after-impact (CAI) tests, Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness and Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness tests were performed on laminates with and without SWCNT. It was found that incorporation of 0.1 wt% of SWCNT resulted in a 5% reduction of the area of impact damage, a 3.5% increase in CAI strength, a 13% increase in Mode I fracture toughness, and 28% increase in Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness. A comparison between the results of this work and literature results on MWCNT-modified laminated composites suggests that SWCNT, at similar loadings, are more effective in enhancing the mechanical performance of traditional laminated composites.  相似文献

A solid-state drawing and winding process was done to create thin aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) sheets from CNT arrays. However, waviness and poor packing of CNTs in the sheets are two main weaknesses restricting their reinforcing efficiency in composites. This report proposes a simple press-drawing technique to reduce wavy CNTs and to enhance dense packing of CNTs in the sheets. Non-pressed and pressed CNT/epoxy composites were developed using prepreg processing with a vacuum-assisted system. Effects of pressing on the mechanical properties of the aligned CNT sheets and CNT/epoxy composites were examined. Pressing with distributed loads of 147, 221, and 294 N/m showed a substantial increase in the tensile strength and the elastic modulus of the aligned CNT sheets and their composites. The CNT sheets under a press load of 221 N/m exhibited the best mechanical properties found in this study. With a press load of 221 N/m, the pressed CNT sheet and its composite, respectively, enhanced the tensile strength by 139.1 and 141.9%, and the elastic modulus by 489 and 77.6% when compared with non-pressed ones. The pressed CNT/epoxy composites achieved high tensile strength (526.2 MPa) and elastic modulus (100.2 GPa). Results show that press-drawing is an important step to produce superior CNT sheets for development of high-performance CNT composites.  相似文献

Multiscale fillers were fabricated through synthesis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on silica microparticles by the use of chemical vapor deposition. Three types of catalyst precursors with different concentrations and reaction times were investigated to find the optimal conditions for CNT synthesis. The produced multiscale fillers of CNT–silica were incorporated within epoxy resin to fabricate a multiscale composite. Rheological analysis and tensile and impact tests were performed to study the effect of fillers on the structural properties of composites. The rheological results demonstrated a similar viscous behavior between CNT–silica suspensions and epoxy, which implies that there was no critical increase of viscosity. Significant improvements in the elastic modulus and tensile and impact strength were achieved for epoxy matrix filled with the optimal fraction of multiscale fillers. The reinforcing efficiency of multiscale fillers was evaluated by comparing the results of micromechanical models with experimental data.  相似文献

Multi-phase composites have been studied by incorporating carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a secondary reinforcement in an epoxy matrix which was then reinforced with glass fiber mat. Different types of CNTs e.g. amino functionalized carbon nanotubes (ACNT) and pristine carbon nanotubes (PCNT) were homogeneously dispersed in the epoxy matrix and two-ply laminates were fabricated using vacuum-assisted resin infusion molding technique. The issues related to CNT dispersion and interfacial bonding and its affect on the mechanical properties have been studied. An important finding of this study is that PCNT scores over ACNT in composites prepared under certain conditions. This is a very significant finding since PCNT is available at a much lower cost than ACNT.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of carbon nanotube (CNT) modification with silane on the flexural and fracture behaviors of modified carbon nanotube epoxy/basalt (CNT/epoxy/basalt) composites. Flexural and mode I fracture tests were performed using acid-treated and silane-treated CNT/epoxy/basalt composites, respectively. FT-IR analysis was conducted to determine the chemical change on the surface of basalt fiber due to the silane modification. After the fracture tests, the fracture surfaces of the CNT/epoxy/basalt composites were examined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to investigate the fracture mechanisms of the CNT/epoxy/basalt composites, depending on the CNT modification. The results show that the flexural modulus and strength of silane-treated CNT/epoxy/basalt composites are ~10% and ~14% greater, respectively, than those of acid-treated CNT/epoxy/basalt composites. The fracture toughness GIc of silane-treated CNT/epoxy/basalt composites was ~40% greater than that of acid-treated CNT/epoxy/basalt composites. SEM examination revealed that the improvement in the flexural and fracture properties of silane-treated CNT/epoxy/basalt composites occurred due to enhanced dispersion and interfacial interaction between the silane-modified CNTs and the epoxy.  相似文献

The interest in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as reinforcements for aluminium (Al) has been growing considerably. Efforts have been largely focused on investigating their contribution to the enhancement of the mechanical performance of the composites. The uniform dispersion of CNTs in the Al matrix has been identified as being critical to the pursuit of enhanced properties. Ball milling as a mechanical dispersion technique has proved its potential. In this work, we use ball milling to disperse up to 5 wt.% CNT in an Al matrix. The effect of CNT content on the mechanical properties of the composites was investigated. Cold compaction and hot extrusion were used to consolidate the ball-milled Al–CNT mixtures. Enhancements of up to 50% in tensile strength and 23% in stiffness compared to pure aluminium were observed. Some carbide formation was observed in the composite containing 5 wt.% CNT. In spite of the observed overall reinforcing effect, the large aspect ratio CNTs used in the present study were difficult to disperse at CNT wt.% greater than 2, and thus the expected improvements in mechanical properties with increase in CNT weight content were not fully realized.  相似文献

A direct process for manufacturing polymer carbon nanotube (CNT)-based composite yarns is reported. The new approach is based on a modified dry spinning method of CNT yarn and gives a high alignment of the CNT bundle structure in yarns. The aligned CNT structure was combined with a polymer resin and, after being stressed through the spinning process, the resin was cured and polymerized, with the CNT structure acting as reinforcement in the composite. Thus the present method obviates the need for special and complex treatments to align and disperse CNTs in a polymer matrix. The new process allows us to produce a polymer/CNT composite with properties that may satisfy various engineering specifications. The structure of the yarn was investigated using scanning electron microscopy coupled with a focused-ion-beam system. The tensile behavior was characterized using a dynamic mechanical analyzer. Fourier transform infrared spectrometry was also used to chemically analyze the presence of polymer on the composites. The process allows development of polymer/CNT-based composites with different mechanical properties suitable for a range of applications by using various resins.  相似文献

Carbon nanotube (CNT)-grafted carbon fibers (CFs) have emerged as new reinforcements for improving the mechanical properties of CF-reinforced composites but such enhancement in macroscale composites has not been realized. This paper reports a facile method for preparing CNT-grafted CFs and improving the tensile strength of their composites. A CNT/polyacrylonitrile solution was sprayed onto the surface of the CF woven fabrics, and the CNTs were grafted by a thermal treatment at 300 °C. CNT-grafted CF composites were fabricated using the CNT-grafted CF woven fabrics using a vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding process with epoxy resin. The CNT-grafted CF composite exhibited 22% enhancement in the tensile strength compared to that of the pristine CF composite. Fracture surfaces of the CNT-grafted CF composites showed that the grafted CNTs obstructed the propagation of micro-cracks and micro-delamination around the CFs and also yarn boundaries, resulting in improved tensile strength of CNT-grafted CF composites.  相似文献

The present work studied the combination effect of physical drying with chemical modification of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on some through-thickness properties of carbon fiber/epoxy composites. Different drying methods of heat drying and freeze drying were utilized to affect CNT organization form in carbon fiber/CNTs preforms and composites: The adoption of heat-drying method made CNTs more inclined to form aggregates accompanied with randomly scattered CNTs, while continuous CNT networks could always be assembled when freeze drying method was employed. The formation mechanism of such CNT networks was discussed, and could be described as “freeze drying within confined space.” Chemical characteristic of CNTs was controlled by choosing different solutions of non-functionalized CNTs (NOCNTs) or hydroxyl-modified CNTs (OHCNTs). As a consequence, CNT networks modified composites, especially that with OHCNTs formed networks, displayed significantly better electrical performance than composites with CNT aggregates and scattered CNTs; NOCNT networks and scattered OHCNTs made the corresponding composites possess higher interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) value, whereas OHCNT networks impaired ILSS while enhancing flexural strength and modulus of composites.  相似文献

In this work, multi wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) dispersed in a polymer matrix have been used to enhance the thermo-mechanical and toughness properties of the resulting nanocomposites. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), tensile tests and single edge notch 3-point bending tests were performed on unfilled, 0.5 and 1 wt.% carbon nanotube (CNT)-filled epoxy to identify the effect of loading on the aforementioned properties. The effect of the dispersion conditions has been thoroughly investigated with regard to the CNT content, the sonication time and the total sonication energy input. The CNT dispersion conditions were of key importance for both the thermo-mechanical and toughness properties of the modified systems. Sonication duration of 1 h was the most effective for the storage modulus and glass transition temperature (Tg) enhancement for both 0.5 and 1 wt.% CNT loadings. The significant increase of the storage modulus and Tg under specific sonication conditions was associated with the improved dispersion and interfacial bonding between the CNTs and the epoxy matrix. Sonication energy was the influencing parameter for the toughness properties. Best results were obtained for 2 h of sonication and 50% sonication amplitude. It was suggested that this level of sonication allowed appropriate dispersion of the CNTs to the epoxy matrices without destroying the CNT’s structure.  相似文献

The potential of advanced carbon/glass hybrid reinforced composites with secondary carbon nanotube reinforcement for wind energy applications is investigated here with the use of computational experiments. Fatigue behavior of hybrid as well as glass and carbon fiber reinforced composites with and without secondary CNT reinforcement is simulated using multiscale 3D unit cells. The materials behavior under both mechanical cyclic loading and combined mechanical and environmental loading (with phase properties degraded due to the moisture effects) is studied. The multiscale unit cells are generated automatically using the Python based code. 3D computational studies of environment and fatigue analyses of multiscale composites with secondary nano-scale reinforcement in different material phases and different CNTs arrangements are carried out systematically in this paper. It was demonstrated that composites with the secondary CNT reinforcements (especially, aligned tubes) present superior fatigue performances than those without reinforcements, also under combined environmental and cyclic mechanical loading. This effect is stronger for carbon composites, than for hybrid and glass composites.

The purpose of this article is to find a way to prepare multiscale material, namely, carbon nanotube-hybridized carbon fiber (CNT/CF) with a low degradation of mechanical properties. Using a facile aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition method, a novel route was described to fabricate CNT/CF. The essential of this technique was in situ formation of catalyst (Fe) nanoparticles via pyrolysis of ferrocene–acetone aerosol right before CNTs growth. Through optimizing aerosol supply and process parameters, a uniform coverage of CNTs was successfully grafted onto the carbon fiber surface to obtain a multiscale (hierarchical) structure. The strong anchorage between the as-synthesized CNTs and carbon fiber substrate was confirmed by ultrasonic bath treatment. Compared with the as-received carbon fibers, single fiber tensile testing results demonstrated that the tensile strengths of CNT-hybridized carbon fiber slightly degraded within 10% at all the correspondingly given gauge lengths.  相似文献

An effective carbon fiber/graphene oxide/carbon nanotubes (CF-GO-CNTs) multiscale reinforcement was prepared by co-grafting carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene oxide (GO) onto the carbon fiber surface. The effects of surface modification on the properties of carbon fiber (CF) and the resulting composites was investigated systematically. The GO and CNTs were chemically grafted on the carbon fiber surface as a uniform coating, which could significantly increase the polar functional groups and surface energy of carbon fiber. In addition, the GO and CNTs co-grafted on the carbon fiber surface could improve interlaminar shear strength of the resulting composites by 48.12% and the interfacial shear strength of the resulting composites by 83.39%. The presence of GO and CNTs could significantly enhance both the area and wettability of fiber surface, leading to great increase in the mechanical properties of GO/CNTs/carbon fiber reinforced composites.  相似文献
