The basic free-space optical communication system includes at least two satellites. To communicate between them, the transmitter satellite must track the beacon of the receiver satellite and point the information optical beam in its direction. Optical tracking and pointing systems for free space suffer during tracking from high-amplitude vibration because of background radiation from interstellar objects such as the Sun, Moon, Earth, and stars in the tracking field of view or the mechanical impact from satellite internal and external sources. The vibrations of beam pointing increase the bit error rate and jam communication between the two satellites. One way to overcome this problem is to increase the satellite receiver beacon power. However, this solution requires increased power consumption and weight, both of which are disadvantageous in satellite development. Considering these facts, we derive a mathematical model of a communication system that adapts optimally the transmitter beam width and the transmitted power to the tracking system performance. Based on this model, we investigate the performance of a communication system with discrete element optical phased array transmitter telescope gain. An example for a practical communication system between a Low Earth Orbit Satellite and a Geostationary Earth Orbit Satellite is presented. From the results of this research it can be seen that a four-element adaptive transmitter telescope is sufficient to compensate for vibration amplitude doubling. The benefits of the proposed model are less required transmitter power and improved communication system performance.  相似文献

To establish optical communication between any two satellites, the lines of sight of their optics must be aligned for the duration of the communication. The satellite pointing and tracking systems perform the alignment. The satellite pointing systems vibrate because of tracking noise and mechanical impacts (such as thruster operation, the antenna pointing mechanism, the solar array driver, navigation noise, tracking noise). These vibrations increase the bit error rate (BER) of the communication system. An expression is derived for adaptive transmitter power that compensates for vibration effects in heterodyne laser satellite links. This compensation makes it possible to keep the link BER performance constant for changes in vibration amplitudes. The motivation for constant BER is derived from the requirement for future satellite communication networks with high quality of service. A practical situation of a two-low-Earth-orbit satellite communication link is given. From the results of the example it is seen that the required power for a given BER increases almost exponentially for linear increase in vibration amplitude.  相似文献

Free-space optical communication between satellites in a distributed network can permit high data rates of communication between different places on Earth. To establish optical communication between any two satellites requires that the line of sight of their optics be aligned during the entire communication time. Because of the large distance between the satellites and the alignment accuracy required, the pointing from one satellite to another is complicated because of vibrations of the pointing system caused by two fundamental stochastic mechanisms: tracking noise created by the electro-optic tracker and vibrations derived from mechanical components. Vibration of the transmitter beam in the receiver plane causes a decrease in the received optical power. Vibrations of the receiver telescope relative to the received beam decrease the heterodyne mixing efficiency. These two factors increase the bit-error rate of a coherent detection network. We derive simple mathematical models of the network bit-error rate versus the system parameters and the transmitter and receiver vibration statistics. An example of a practical optical heterodyne free-space satellite optical communication network is presented. From this research it is clear that even low-amplitude vibration of the satellite-pointing systems dramatically decreases network performance.  相似文献

Terrestrial optical wireless communication (OWC) is emerging as a promising technology, which makes connectivity possible between high-rise buildings and metropolitan and intercity communication infrastructures. A light beam carries the information, which facilitates extremely high data rates. However, strict alignment between the transmitter and the receiver must be maintained at all times, and a pointing error can result in a total severance of the communication link. In addition, the presence of fog and haze in the propagation channel hampers OWC as the small water droplets scatter the propagating light. This causes attenuation due to the resultant spatial, angular, and temporal spread of the light signal. Furthermore, the ensuing low visibility may impede the operation of the tracking and pointing system so that pointing errors occur. We develop a model of light transmission through fogs of different optical densities and types using Monte Carlo simulations. Based on this model, the performance of OWC in fogs is evaluated at different wavelengths. The handicap of a transceiver pointing error is added to the model, and the paradoxically advantageous aspects of the transmission medium are exposed. The concept of a variable field of view receiver for narrow-beam OWC is studied, and the possibility of thus enhancing communication system performance through fog in an inexpensive and simple way is indicated.  相似文献

We derive a model that optimizes the performance of a laser satellite communication link with an optical preamplifier in the presence of random jitter in the transmitter-receiver line of sight. The system utilizes a transceiver containing a single telescope with a circulator. The telescope is used for both transmitting and receiving and thus reduces communication terminal dimensions and weight. The optimization model was derived under the assumption that the dominant noise source was amplifier spontaneous-emission noise. It is shown that, given the required bit-error rate (BER) and the rms random pointing jitter, an optimal transceiver gain exists that minimizes transmitted power. We investigate the effect of the amplifier spontaneous-emission noise on the optimal transmitted power and gain by performing an optimization procedure for various combinations of amplifier gain and noise figure. We demonstrate that the amplifier noise figure determines the optimal transmitted power needed to achieve the desired BER but does not affect the optimal transceiver telescope gain. Our numerical example shows that for a BER of 10(-9), doubling the amplifier noise figure results in an 80% increase in minimal transmitted power for a rms pointing jitter of 0.44 microrad.  相似文献

A binary differential impulse radio-ultra wide band (IR-UWB) communication scheme over a singlemode optical fibre is examined. For a receiver structure, the conventional electrical receiver as well as an optical receiver structure, which is similar to the optical receiver used for digital, optically phase-modulated differential phase shift keying, are considered. The optical receiver can alleviate the IR-UWB receiver implementation challenges and it is studied for the first time in the context of IR-UWB. Considering various important noises, for example, phase noise, laser intensity noise, thermal noise and shot noise, analytical expressions for the error probability of the aforementioned receivers are derived. The mathematical models for optical components including laser diode and single-mode fibre, along with the analytical expressions for the receiver?s error probability, are used to evaluate the overall performance of an UWB communication system over a fibre transmission medium. Furthermore, the electrical receiver is compared with the optical receiver and it is shown that the performance of the optical receiver can be as good as that of the electrical receiver and even better. The impact of wireless channel fading, bias current of laser diode and the coherence time of laser diode on the UWB over fibre system performance is also examined.  相似文献

Decreased signal-to-noise ratio and maximum bit rate as well as increased in error probability in optical digital communication are caused by particulate light scatter in the atmosphere and in space. Two effects on propagation of laser pulses are described: spatial widening of the transmitted beam and attenuation of pulse radiant power. Based on these results a model for reliability of digital optical communication in a particulate-scattering environment is presented. Examples for practical communication systems are given. An adaptive method to improve and in some cases to make possible communication is suggested. Comparison and analysis of two models of communication systems for the particulate-scattering channel are presented: a transmitter with a high bit rate and a receiver with an avalanche photodiode and a transmitter with a variable bit rate and a new model for an adaptive circuit in the receiver. An improvement of more than 7 orders of magnitude in error probability under certain conditions is possible with the new adaptive system model.  相似文献

Optical space communication from satellite to ground or air to air consists of clouds as part of communication channels. Propagation of optical pulses through clouds causes widening and deformation in the time domain and attenuation of the pulse radiant power. These effects decrease the received signal and limit the information bandwidth of the communication system. Having dealt with the other effects previously, here we concentrate on pulse broadening in the time domain. We derive a mathematical model of an adaptive optical communication system with a multiscattering channel (atmospheric cloud). We use knowledge about the impulse response function of the cloud to adapt the communication parameters to the transfer function of the cloud. The communication system includes a receiver and a transmitter. We adapted the transmitter to atmospheric conditions by changing the bit error rate. One can adapt the receiver to the atmospheric condition by changing the parameters of the detector and the filter. An example for a practical communication system between a low Earth orbit satellite and a ground station cover by cloud is given. Comparison and analysis of an adaptive and semiadaptive system with cloud channels are presented. Our conclusion is that in some cases only by such adaptive methods is optical communication possible.  相似文献

Random pointing errors in coherent ladar tend to cause a reduction in measured signal power due to misalignment among the transmitter, receiver, and (hard) target. A simple model for the size of this impact, in terms of the size of the pointing error, would be useful in the design and evaluation of coherent ladar systems. To be most applicable to monostatic systems, the model should also include correlation between transmitter and receiver pointing errors. We derive an analytic expression for the reduction in average signal power, which we call pointing efficiency, based on Gaussian beam coherent ladar with Gaussian pointing errors that includes arbitrary correlation between transmitter and receiver pointing errors.  相似文献

The internally coded time-hopping coherent ultra-short light pulse code division multiple access (CULP CDMA) scheme (recently introduced) with an optical amplifier is described and its performance in fibreoptic communication systems is analysed. In accordance with the important role of optical amplifiers in optical communication systems, a preamplifier at the input of the receiver is used in order to compensate the losses because of the spectral encoder, spectral decoder and optical fibre path. The authors evaluate the bit error rate of the system considering the effects of the multiple access interference, noise because of the optical amplifier and thermal noise using saddle point approximation, and compare the results with those of the conventional CULP CDMA system with and without an amplifier. The numerical results indicate a substantial improvement in the performance of the coded system in comparison with the uncoded one. In addition, the negative effect of amplifier noise in the proposed scheme is much less than that of the conventional CULP CDMA system.  相似文献

This paper presents the exact average bit error rate (BER) analysis of the free-space optical system employing subcarrier intensity modulation (SIM) with Gray-coded quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). The intensity fluctuations of the received optical signal are caused by the path loss, atmospheric turbulence and pointing errors. The exact closed-form analytical expressions for the average BER are derived assuming the SIM-QAM with arbitrary constellation size in the presence of the Gamma–Gamma scintillation. The simple approximate average BER expressions are also provided, considering only the dominant term in the finite summations of obtained expressions. Derived expressions are reduced to the special case when optical signal transmission is affected only by the atmospheric turbulence. Numerical results are presented in order to illustrate usefulness of the derived expressions and also to give insights into the effects of different modulation, channel and receiver parameters on the average BER performance. The results show that the misalignment between the transmitter laser and receiver detector has the strong effect on the average BER value, especially in the range of the high values of the average electrical signal-to-noise ratio.  相似文献

The effect of transmitter and receiver array configurations on the performance of free-space optical interconnects (FSOIs) was investigated. Experimentally measured, spectrally resolved, near-field images of vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) transverse modes were used as extended sources in our simulation model and combined with laser relative intensity noise and the receiver noise to determine the optimal array geometry. Our results demonstrate the importance of stray-light cross talk in both square and hexagonal configurations. By changing the array lattice geometry from square to hexagonal, we obtained an overall optical signal-to-noise ratio improvement of 3 dB. We demonstrated that the optical signal-to-noise ratio is optimal for the hexagonal channel arrangement regardless of the transverse mode structure of the VCSEL beam. We also determined the VCSEL drive current required for the best performance of the FSOI system.  相似文献

We have numerically investigated a chaotic laser diode transmitter-receiver array scheme (CLDTRAS), which is a secure digital communication scheme using a difference between two types of transmitter-receiver array consisting of two self-pulsating laser diodes (LDs), i.e., a receiver LD and a transmitter LD. By analyzing the bit error rate, particularly its dependence on the parameter mismatches of the hardware and channel noise and on the correlation coefficient between a transmitter LD and receiver LD, we examined the problems of sensitivity to parameter mismatches and channel noise and a dependence on chaos synchronization between a transmitter LD and a receiver LD. The former makes communication difficult, and the latter makes it possible for an eavesdropper to estimate the receiver LD using chaos synchronization and to forge the hardware. Then we studied the effects of the bit error rate for various values of the threshold, which determines a binary message, and for various numbers of transmitters-receivers making up a LD transmitter-receiver array. It has been shown that a highly noise-tolerant and hardware-dependent communication scheme can be achieved with the LD transmitter-receiver array, whose transmitter and receiver LDs are asynchronous with respect to each other, by choosing the proper threshold and increasing the number of LD transmitters-receivers. Since it is possible to communicate without chaos synchronization, it becomes difficult to forge hardware and to eavesdrop with the forged hardware even if the key is stolen.  相似文献

Estimates of the scintillation index, fractional fade time, expected number of fades, and mean duration of fade time associated with a propagating Gaussian-beam wave are developed for uplink and downlink laser satellite-communication channels. Estimates for the spot size of the beam at the satellite or the ground or airborne receiver are also provided. Weak-fluctuation theory based on the log-normal model is applicable for intensity fluctuations near the optical axis of the beam provided that the zenith angle is not too large, generally not exceeding 60°. However, there is an increase in scintillations that occurs with increasing pointing error at any zenith angle, particularly for uplink channels. Large off-axis scintillations are of particular significance because they imply that small pointing errors can cause serious degradation in the communication-channel reliability. Off-axis scintillations increase more rapidly for larger-diameter beams and, in some cases, can lead to a radial saturation effect for pointing errors less than 1 μrad off the optical beam axis.  相似文献

In practice, due to reasons related to the characteristics of the laser device and the inevitable error of the processing technique, a laser beam emitted from a communication terminal is represented by the Gaussian–Schell model. The incident optical intensity at the receiver aperture is affected by the source coherence parameter through atmospheric turbulence. With full consideration of both the average optical intensity and the scintillation, the statistical distribution of the optical intensity and the average bit error rate (BER) of an on-off keying (OOK) receiver is obtained. The results indicate that the effect on the degradation of the average optical intensity is reduced with a smaller beamwidth. The performance of the OOK receiver degrades drastically with the increasing source coherence parameter. Moreover, when the beamwidth becomes larger, the BER0 with a consistent source coherence parameter shifts to the side of lower BER. The goal of this work is to improve the redundancy design of the laser communication receiver system.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate an optimised transmitter pre-filtering technique for downlink time-division-duplex (TDD) code division multiple access (CDMA) communications, which employs the conventional matched filter (MF) detector at the mobile receivers. The proposed pre-filtering technique eliminates the multiple-access interference and intersymbol interference (MAI/ISI) effects by applying a very simple transmission scheme that combines a signal transformation with a cyclic prefix strategy under a power constraint condition. Two constrained pre-filtering transformations are suggested depending on the information required at the mobile unit. An open-loop transmitter pre-filtering is first formulated; however, this solution does not consider the properties of the noise at the mobile receiver. A second solution is then presented via a closed-loop transmitter pre-filtering that includes an optimum gain for a given transmit and noise power. Some associated issues such as system efficiency, computational complexity and channel estimation errors are also addressed. Simulation results show that the proposed transmitter pre-filtering scheme can be used to increase the system performance and capacity. In addition, its performance is compared with another similar transmit pre-processing scheme in order to evaluate the performance improvement by the proposed algorithm.  相似文献

The effects of unwanted external optical feedback on synchronized chaotic optical communication systems are studied numerically. We consider an open-loop configuration consisting of a transmitter laser with double external optical feedbacks and a receiver laser with optical injection from the transmitter laser. First, including the effects of unwanted optical feedback, the synchronization performances of both the complete synchronization and the generalized synchronization are examined. Then the encoding and decoding performances of the generalized synchronization and the effects of the introduced feedback are investigated, respectively. Finally, we study the control of the unwanted feedback on the dynamics of the transmitter laser and briefly discuss the system security when the transmitter laser is driven to operate in a steady state or periodic oscillation state by the additional feedback.  相似文献

We investigate robust optical wireless communication in a highly scattering propagation medium using multielement optical detector arrays. The communication setup consists of synchronized multiple transmitters that send information to a receiver array and an atmospheric propagation channel. The mathematical model that best describes this scenario is multi-input to multi-output communication through stochastic slow changing channels. In this model, signals from m transmitters are received by n receiver-detectors. The channel transfer function matrix is G, and its size is n x m. G(i,j) is the transfer function from transmitter i to detector j, and m > or = n. We adopt a quasi-stationary approach in which the channel time variation has a negligible effect on communication performance over a burst. The G matrix is calculated on the basis of the optical transfer function of the atmospheric channel (composed of aerosol and turbulence elements) and the receiver's optics. In this work we derive a performance model using environmental data, such as documented turbulence and aerosol models and noise statistics. We also present the results of simulations conducted for the proposed detection algorithm.  相似文献

Atmospheric optical communication with a Gaussian Schell beam   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
We consider a wireless optical communication link in which the laser source is a Gaussian Schell beam. The effects of atmospheric turbulence strength and degree of source spatial coherence on aperture averaging and average bit error rate are examined. To accomplish this, we have derived analytic expressions for the spatial covariance of irradiance fluctuations and log-intensity variance for a Gaussian beam of any degree of coherence in the weak fluctuation regime. When spatial coherence of the transmitted source beam is reduced, intensity fluctuations (scintillations) decrease, leading to a significant reduction in the bit error rate of the optical communication link. We have also identified an enhanced aperture-averaging effect that occurs in tightly focused coherent Gaussian beams and in collimated and slightly divergent partially coherent beams. The expressions derived provide a useful design tool for selecting the optimal transmitter beam size, receiver aperture size, beam spatial coherence, transmitter focusing, etc., for the anticipated atmospheric channel conditions.  相似文献

The far-field pattern of an onboard laser transmitter was measured with a transatmospheric optical link with a distance of ~33,000 km between the satellite and the optical ground station. The far-field pattern was acquired with a new method used to analyze statistically downlink irradiance data obtained at the ground station. The statistical tracking and pointing characteristics of the transmitter were taken into account in estimating downlink irradiance, assuming that there were no atmospheric scintillation effects. The peak directive gain of the downlink laser beam was 104.3 dB. The beam width (full width at half-maximum) was 28.5 x 17.5murad. These results were consistent with the results froma laboratory test undertaken before launch of the satellite.  相似文献
