Seven groups of 12 Wistar rats were fed during two experimental periods. During the first period of 4 weeks, rats were fed diets containing 100 g kg?1 of casein or soya-protein. In the case of casein, diets contained casein, casein + 3.5 g kg?1 of sodium carrageenan and casein + 3.5 g kg?1 of sodium carrageenan + 1 g kg?1 of DL-methionine. In the case of soya protein, diets contained soya protein, soya protein + 6.2 g kg?1 of sodium carrageenan, soya protein + 6.2 g kg?1 of sodium carrageenan + 1 g kg?1 of DL-methionine and soya protein + 1 g kg?1 of DL-methionine. During the second period of 8 weeks, all rats were fed laboratory pellets containing 170 g kg?1 of standard protein mixture. Methionine supplementation of heated soya bean meal containing carrageenan prevented the decrease of growth observed with unsupplemented diet. Methionine supplementation of casein improved protein efficiency ratio and had no effect on long-term growth of rats because carrageenan did not cause growth retardation. At the end of second period, carrageenan ingested during the first period had no effect on plasma cholesterol. When carrageenans added to casein were ingested during the first period, plasma triglycerides were significantly lower after the second period. It would seem that carrageenans induce protein malnutrition by a lack of methionine when they are present in low protein diets with low methionine content, and that a sufficient content of methionine in diets prevents the carrageenan effect.  相似文献

In experiment 1, 224 pigs (initially 8.85 kg and 28 ± 2 days of age) were used in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments to investigate the interaction between lactofeed (LF70) (860 g kg?1 whey permeate, 140 g kg?1 soya bean meal) level (175 g kg?1 and 350 g kg?1) and avilamycin (0 and 40 mg kg?1) inclusion in piglet starter diets. Pigs were fed starter diets from day 0 to day 22 and a transition diet was fed from day 23 to day 39. The inclusion level of LF70 in the transition diet was 75 g kg?1 and 150 g kg?1. Pigs fed 350 g kg?1 LF70 had a higher daily gain (ADG) (p < 0.01) and an improved feed conversion ratio (FCR) (p < 0.05) during the starter period than the pigs fed 175 g kg?1 LF70. Pigs fed medicated diets had a higher ADG (p < 0.05) and an improved FCR (p < 0.05) than the non‐medicated fed pigs during the starter period. There was an increase in feed intake (AFI) (p < 0.05) during the transition period with increasing levels of LF70. There was an improvement in FCR during the transition period with the inclusion of avilamycin (p < 0.01). There was a significant interaction (p < 0.01) between LF70 and avilamycin for ADG during the transition period. The inclusion of avilamycin at 175 g kg?1 LF70 inclusion had no effect (p > 0.05) on ADG. However at 350 g kg?1 LF70 inclusion the pigs offered medicated diets had a higher ADG (p < 0.001) compared with non‐medicated diets. In experiment 2, 224 pigs (initially 8.85 kg and 28 ± 2 days of age) were used in a 2 × 2 factorial to investigate the interaction between LF70 level (175 g kg?1 and 350 g kg?1) and zinc oxide (ZnO) (0 and 3.1 g kg?1) inclusion in piglet starter diets. The inclusion level of LF70 in the transition diet was 75 g kg?1 and 150 g kg?1 and of ZnO was 2 g kg?1. There was a significant increase (p < 0.05) in ADG with increasing levels of LF70 during the starter period. The inclusion of ZnO during the starter period resulted in an increase in ADG (p < 0.001) and FCR (p < 0.05) compared with no ZnO inclusion. Neither the inclusion of zinc oxide not of LF70 had an effect (p > 0.05) on performance during the transition period. In conclusion the supplementation of starter diets with increasing levels of LF70, ZnO and avilamycin resulted in increased ADG and improved FCR. BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of purslane on egg production, egg weight, feed efficiency, yolk fatty acid composition, and egg cholesterol content in laying hens. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty 80‐week‐old layers were allocated randomly to receive diets supplemented with 0 (control), 10 g kg?1 or 20 g kg?1 dried purslane for 84 days. Egg weights and egg production in the groups were recorded daily, whereas feed intake was measured weekly. RESULTS: Diet supplemented with 20 g kg?1 purslane significantly decreased body weight of the chickens compared to the control. Inclusion of purslane at the level of 10 g kg?1 or 20 g kg?1 into the diet significantly (P < 0.05) improved egg weight compared to the control. Chickens fed the diet including 20 g kg?1 purslane had a significantly (P < 0.05) higher egg production and improved feed efficiency compared to the control. Cholesterol content of eggs from the hens fed 0, 10 or 20 g kg?1 did not differ and was 10.45, 9.51 or 9.51 mg g?1 dried egg yolk, respectively. Inclusion of purslane at the level of 20 g kg?1 into the diet significantly (P < 0.05) increased ω‐3 fatty acids such as C18:3(ω‐3) and C22:6(ω‐3). The ratio of ω‐6 to ω‐3 also was significantly (P < 0.05) lower in the eggs from chickens fed 10 g kg?1 or 20 g kg?1 purslane supplemented diets compared to the control. CONCLUSION: This study showed that adding dried purslane to the diet of laying hens significantly increased egg production and egg weights although there was no reduction in the egg cholesterol concentration. This study also showed that inclusion of purslane into diet enriched eggs with ω‐3 fatty acids and decreased the ratio of ω‐6/ω‐3 in the yolk. Copyright © 2010 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of processing and dietary inclusion level of flaxseed on broiler performance and nutrient utilisation. Flaxseed was included in the diet fed to day‐old broilers for the first 3 weeks as whole seed, ground seed, autoclaved whole seed, ground autoclaved whole seed or whole seed pelleted with the other ingredients, at levels of 0, 100, 120 and 140 g kg?1. Chicks fed the pelleted flaxseed‐containing diets had heavier body weights, consumed more feed and had better feed/gain ratios than those fed the other flaxseed‐containing diets during the 3 weeks period (P < 0.01). The flaxseed level in the diet also had very significant (P < 0.01) effects on body weight and feed/gain ratio at the end of weeks 1 and 3, with the diets containing 100 g kg?1 flaxseed resulting in better performance than the other flaxseed‐containing diets. Among the flaxseed containing diets, the pelleted diets led to higher apparent ether extract digestibilities, with values of 778 and 770 g kg?1 for the diets containing 100 and 140 g kg?1 flaxseed respectively. This better utilisation of ether extract by young broilers may explain the significantly (P < 0.05) higher AMEn (apparent metabolisable energy) value of 2924 kcal kg?1 for the pelleted 140 g kg?1 flaxseed‐containing diet. This was 15.4–17.5% higher than for the diets with the same level of flaxseed but provided as raw or autoclaved whole seed. The pelleting of flaxseed allowed an inclusion rate of 100 g kg?1 without any reduction in the performance and nutrient utilisation of broilers. The nutritive value of transgenic lupin seeds (Lupinus angustifolius L) with higher contents of methionine was evaluated with broiler chickens. The crude protein, methionine and cysteine contents in the conventional and transgenic lupins were 322 and 324, 2.0 and 4.5, and 3.6 and 3.7 g kg?1 dry matter respectively. In the feeding trial, conventional and transgenic lupins with hulls were incorporated into a maize–soyabean meal diet at 250 g kg?1 level and the diets were fed to female broiler chicks from 6 to 20 days of age. All diets were balanced to contain similar levels of apparent metabolisable energy (AME), lysine and sulphur‐containing amino acids. The levels of free methionine added to the maize–soyabean meal control, conventional lupin and transgenic lupin diets were 2.2, 2.8 and 2.2 g kg?1 respectively. Weight gain and feed intake were not influenced by dietary treatments, but feed/gain tended to be higher (P = 0.09) in birds fed lupin diets compared with those fed the control diet. Feed/gain of birds fed the conventional lupin diet was higher (1.82 vs 1.74) than for those fed the transgenic lupin diet. These results showed that the supplemental methionine required in poultry diets containing 250 g kg?1 lupin can be lowered by 0.6 g kg?1 diet by the use of high‐methionine lupins. The AME values of conventional and transgenic lupins were determined to be 9.42 and 10.18 MJ kg?1 dry matter respectively. The higher AME value in transgenic lupins may be related to the lower content of soluble non‐starch polysaccharides (45.6 vs 60.7 g kg?1 air‐dry basis). Data on ileal amino acid digestibility indicate that the amino acids in transgenic lupins are as digestible as those in conventional lupins. © 2002 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

In a series of 10-day pair feeding experiments it was found that the nutritional value of diets containing beans was essentially the same for rats aged between 30 and 123 days. Thus net protein utilisation (NPU) values of 25–39 on diets containing Processor bean (35 g protein kg?1) + egg albumin (65g protein kg?1) were obtained. As food intakes were considerably reduced when rats were fed diets containing more than 35g protein kg?1 of Processor bean, the measurement of protein utilisation became increasingly more difficult. The severe disruption of the brush borders of duodenal and jejunal enterocytes, originally observed when bean-containing diets were fed to young (30-day-old) rats was also found with rats up to the age of 120 days on similar diets. Similarly, the development of circulating anti-lectin antibodies in the animals showed no age dependence within the age limits investigated. It was also shown that oral immunisation did not protect the rats from the effects of toxicity and that the immune response was a result of continuous absorption of lectin throughout the feeding period. Thus the extent and the mechanism of toxicity of Phaseolus vulgaris bean lectins were found not to be dependent on the age or maturity of the animal.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: We recently determined that 150 g kg?1 of lucerne meal can be fed during the finishing period without detrimental effects on pig performance but lucerne should be limited to less than 75 g kg?1 during the growing period. Lucerne has a high fiber content, is poorly digested and contains antinutritional factors such as saponins which reduce palatability. Therefore, pig performance could be enhanced by supplementing lucerne‐containing diets with feed additives such as flavors, enzymes or organic acids. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of these additives on nutrient digestibility, performance and carcass traits when fed to growing‐finishing swine fed diets containing lucerne. RESULTS: Flavor and enzyme had no effect on nutrient digestibility, pig performance or carcass traits. During the growing period, inclusion of propionic and acetic acids increased (P < 0.05) the digestibility of dry matter, protein and energy. Weight gain and intake also increased (P < 0.05). None of the additives had any effect on pig performance during the finishing period or on carcass traits. CONCLUSION: During the growing period, including 200 g kg?1 lucerne was detrimental to pig performance. Addition of organic acid improved pig performance and nutrient digestibility. During the finishing period, 200 g kg?1 lucerne can be successfully incorporated into pig diets without negative effects on pig performance. Copyright © 2008 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Highly purified rice protein isolates (RPI) were prepared by an alkaline extraction–acid precipitation method (E-RPI) and by an α-amylase treatment to remove starch (T-RPI). Biological values of these RPI were significantly lower than that of casein. Serum cholesterol concentrations were compared among groups of rats fed (per kg diet) 200, 300 or 400 g E-RPI, 400 g T-RPI, 250 or 400 g casein kg−1 or 400 g soya bean protein isolate (SPI). With all the diets containing 400 g protein kg−1 diet, growth rates of rats were the same. At this level, E-RPI, T-RPI and SPI diets produced significantly lower serum cholesterol concentrations than the casein diet. Faecal bile acid plus neutral steroid excre-tion was significantly higher in rats fed the 400 g kg−1 T-RPI or 400 g kg−1 SPIdiets compared with rats fed the 400 g kg−1 casein diet. On the other hand, the 400 g kg−1 E-RPI diet did not increase steroid excretion. Plasma cholesterol concentrations in rats fed diets with amino acid mixtures simulating SPI and E-RPI were also significantly lower than that of rats fed the diet with an amino acid mixture simulating casein even though the faecal excretions of total bile acids were the same amongst groups. These results support the view that RPI are hypocholesterolaemic relative to casein and at least the hypocholesterolaemic effects of E-RPI would be independent of interruption of the enterohepatic circulation of endogenous steroids.  相似文献

The nutritional value of Telfairia occidentalis seed and seed oil available in local market was studied in rats. The average values of the proximate analysis on dry matter basis were 203 g kg?1 crude protein, 536.3 g kg?1 fat, 39 g kg?1 ash, 95 g kg?1 crude fibre and 43.7 g kg?1 carbohydrate, while the moisture content was 75 g kg?1. The mineral analyses showed that T occidentalis seeds contain potassium (3280 mg kg?1), sodium (1230 mg kg?1), magnesium (60.8 mg kg?1), calcium (60.8 mg kg?1) and iron (13.0 mg kg?1). The oil extracted from the seed sample showed physicochemical properties that suggest its suitability for edible and industrial uses. The oil contained high levels of unsaturated fatty acids, oleic and linoleic, which accounted for 63.22% of total fatty acids recovered, while palmitic acid (27.4% of the oil by weight) was the most prevalent saturated fatty acid in the oil. No trace of eleostearic acid was detected in the oil. The effect on physical appearance, weight gain, organ weight, tissue and plasma cholesterol and triacylglycerol levels was determined in rats fed a diet containing 5% T occidentalis oil. These were compared with those of rats fed a control diet (0% T occidentalis oil) over an 8 week study period. Weekly monitoring of the rats showed good physical appearance and steady weight increase. The test rats were not anaemic and no mortality was recorded. While there was a significantly higher (p < 0.05) level of cholesterol in the heart of test rats compared with the control, there was a significantly lower (p < 0.05) plasma cholesterol level, suggesting that T occidentalis seed oil can be used to lower plasma levels of cholesterol. Histological examination of the sections of the heart, liver, kidney and spleen of the test rats revealed varying degrees of pathology. These include artherosclerotic changes in the walls of vasa vasori and lymphatics in the heart and hyaline degeneration of myofibrils, fatty infiltration of hepatocytes, and glomerular and tubular degeneration in the kidneys. These lesions may have been due to the effect of fatty acids, especially erucic acid, in the seed oil, which at 1.24% (less that the 5% conventional allowable limit for edible oils) may be intolerable for rats and may be unsuitable for human consumption. The seed oil may be used for industrial purposes such as soap making, lubrication and cosmetics for which it is well suited. Copyright © 2004 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

An experiment was conducted with 12 grower pigs to determine the effects of (1) manipulating dietary neutral detergent fibre (NDF) level and (2) dietary inclusion of fibre‐degrading enzymes on nutrient digestibility and excreta characteristics in pigs. Four diets were formulated to contain three levels of NDF: 1, 66 g kg?1 NDF (low fibre); 2, 121 g kg?1 NDF (moderate fibre); 3, 222 g kg?1 NDF (high fibre); 4, diet 3 plus 2.0 g kg?1 enzyme. Increasing levels of dietary NDF linearly decreased dry matter and energy digestibilities (r2 = 0.99, P < 0.05). Lowering dietary NDF from 222 to 121 g kg?1 improved nitrogen digestibility by 13% (P < 0.01). Faecal production was decreased by 9% for each 1% decrease in dietary NDF content (r2 = 0.99, P < 0.05). Inclusion of fibre‐degrading enzymes in the high‐fibre diet improved dry matter and energy digestibilities by 2 and 3% respectively, and reduced faecal production by 10% (P < 0.01). Faecal and manure (faeces plus urine) pH values from pigs fed the high‐fibre diet and the high‐fibre plus enzyme diet were lower than those from pigs fed the other experimental diets (P < 0.05). In conclusion, lowering the dietary NDF level or inclusion of fibre‐degrading enzymes in high‐fibre diets may offer relatively practical and easy methods for reducing waste production in pigs. © 2002 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of phosphorus (P) level and calcium (Ca)/total P (tP) ratio on the efficacy of microbial phytase. Experiment 1 examined the effects of P concentration and microbial phytase inclusion on mineral excretion and pig performance, while experiment 2 examined the effects of Ca/tP ratio and microbial phytase inclusion on mineral excretion and pig performance. In experiment 1, nutrient and mineral digestibility (n = 4) and growth performance (n = 12) were determined in pigs individually fed diets containing (T1) 5.5 g kg?1 tP, 2.3 g kg?1 available P (aP) and 8.0 g kg?1 Ca, (T2) 5.5 g kg?1 tP, 2.3 g kg?1 aP, 8.0 g kg?1 Ca and 750 FYT kg?1 Peniophora lycii phytase, (T3) 4.3 g kg?1 tP, 1.4 g kg?1 aP and 8.0 g kg?1 Ca and (T4) 4.3 g kg?1 tP, 1.4 g kg?1 aP, 8.0 g kg?1 Ca and 750 FYT kg?1 P lycii phytase. In experiment 2, nutrient and mineral digestibility (n = 4) and growth performance (n = 12) were determined in pigs individually fed diets containing (TT1) 4.3 g kg?1 tP and 8.0 g kg?1 Ca, (TT2) 4.3 g kg?1 tP, 8.0 g kg?1 Ca and 750 FYT kg?1 P lycii phytase, (TT3) 4.3 g kg?1 tP and 5.0 g kg?1 Ca and (TT4) 4.3 g kg?1 tP, 5.0 g kg?1 Ca and 750 FYT kg?1 P lycii phytase. All diets were formulated, using standard feeding values for the ingredients, to have similar concentrations of digestible energy (DE) and lysine. In experiment 1, pigs offered the low‐P diets had significantly lower P intake (P < 0.001), faecal P excretion (P < 0.05), Ca intake (P < 0.05) and faecal Ca excretion (P < 0.05) compared with pigs given the adequate‐P diets. These pigs also had significantly lower daily gain (P < 0.01), feed intake (P < 0.05) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) (P < 0.05). The inclusion of phytase in both the adequate‐ and low‐P diets increased the digestibility of energy (P < 0.05) and Ca (P < 0.01) but had no effect on pig performance. In experiment 2, lowering the Ca/tP ratio from 1.85:1 to 1.15:1 increased the DE content of the diet (P < 0.05). The inclusion of phytase increased (P < 0.05) the digestibility of protein (0.874 versus 0.840, SEM 0.009) and Ca (0.427 versus 0.380, SEM 0.019) as well as the DE content of the diet (14.47 versus 14.26 MJ kg?1, SEM 0.073). There was a significant ratio × phytase interaction (P < 0.5) for P digestibility. Microbial phytase significantly increased P digestibility when added to the 1.15:1 ratio diet but had no effect when added to the 1.85:1 ratio diet. The inclusion of microbial phytase increased feed intake (2.16 versus 2.00 kg day?1, SEM 0.05; P < 0.05) and weight gain (0.893 versus 0.818 kg day?1, SEM 0.022; P < 0.05). Lowering the Ca/tP ratio resulted in a significant improvement in FCR (2.32 versus 2.40 kg kg?1, SEM 0.03; P < 0.05). In conclusion, the beneficial effects of microbial phytase supplementation of pig diets are adversely affected by a wide Ca/tP ratio. © 2002 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Two feeding trials were conducted to evaluate cassava leaf meal (CLM) as a replacement for coconut oil meal (COM) in tropical pig diets. In each trial, 36 pigs (initial weight, 14.5 kg) were limit fed diets containing 0, 133, 267 and 400 g kg?1 CLM substituted for equal amounts (w/w) of COM in a 179 g kg?1 protein basal diet. An extra-period Latin-square changeover design with 2-week periods was used. Average daily gain and feed efficiency were improved when diets containing 133 g kg?1 CLM were fed, which may be attributed to the higher lysine content of CLM. Daily gain and feed efficiency of pigs fed diets containing 267 g kg?1 CLM were similar to those on the basal diet. Poor performance of pigs fed the 400 g kg?1 CLM diets may be explained by the low energy content and the presence of anti-nutritional factors, such as cyanide and tannin, in CLM. Two balance trials were conducted using 16 barrows (castrated male pigs, initial weight, 37.2 kg). Apparent digestibility coefficients for dry matter, energy, protein, cell contents, cell wall and hemicellulose were depressed, whereas those for ash and lignin were improved as CLM was substituted for COM. The data indicate that cassava leaf protein is utilised efficiently, although other nutrients in CLM are not as digestible as those in COM.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Coriandrum sativum L., commonly known as coriander and belonging to the family Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), is cultivated throughout the world for its nutritional value. The present study was undertaken to investigate the effects of fresh Coriandrum sativum leaves (CSL) on cognitive functions, total serum cholesterol levels and brain cholinesterase activity in mice. In this study, CSL (5, 10 and 15% w/w of diet) was fed orally with a specially prepared diet for 45 days consecutively to experimental animals. Elevated plus‐maze and passive avoidance apparatus served as the exteroceptive behavioral models for testing memory. Diazepam, scopolamine and ageing‐induced amnesia served as the interoceptive behavioral models. RESULTS: CSL (5, 10 and 15% w/w of diet) produced a dose‐dependent improvement in memory scores of young as well as aged mice. CSL also reversed successfully the memory deficits induced by scopolamine (0.4 mg kg?1, i.p.) and diazepam (1 mg kg?1, i.p.). Interestingly, brain cholinesterase activity and serum total cholesterol levels were considerably reduced by CSL administration in daily diets concomitantly for 45 days. CONCLUSION: CSL may be a useful remedy in the management of Alzheimer's disease on account of its multifarious effects such as, memory‐improving property, cholesterol‐lowering property and anticholinesterase activity. Fish waste was ensiled either by acidification with formic acid or by fermentation with a bacterial starter culture and molasses. The resulting liquids were mixed with wheat bran (85:15 w/w liquid: bran) and dried (70°C) to produce acid silage meal (ASM) and fermented silage meal (FSM). ASM and FSM were incorporated into wheat-based diets at 25, 50 and 100 g kg?1 at the expense of soya bean meal. There were two control diets, one which contained soya bean meal as the predominant protein supplement and a second in which fish meal (50 g kg?1) was added at the expense of some of the soya bean meal. Starter diets (13.25 MJ ME kg?1, 12 g kg?1 lysine) were fed from 1-day-old to 21-days-old and finisher diets (13.25 MJ ME kg?1, 9.5 g kg?1 lysine) were fed from 22 to 42-days-old to six replicates each of five birds. Birds were reared in raised-wire cages, and feed intake, liveweight and mortality were recorded. There were no significant effects of dietary inclusion of either ASM and FSM on the performance of broiler chickens relative to those fed on control diets. FSM contained less crude protein and amino acids than ASM. The recovery of amino acids relative to the total crude protein content from FSM was only 78.7%, presumably as a result of formation of Maillard reaction products during drying.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Trivalent chromium (Cr) is a trace element that is difficult to digest and absorb. The objective of this study was to determine whether reducing organic Cr to nanometre size would increase its digestibility. RESULTS: Forty‐eight 8‐week‐old female Sprague‐Dawley rats were randomly assigned to one of four dietary treatments: (1) basal diet (control); (2) basal diet plus 300 µg kg?1 Cr as chromium chloride (CrCl3); (3) basal diet plus 300 µg kg?1 Cr as chromium picolinate (Crpic); (4) basal diet plus 300 µg kg?1 Cr as nanoparticulate Crpic (nanoCrpic). NanoCrpic was prepared from Crpic with a particle size of 55–100 nm. The experiment lasted 48 days. Cr digestibility and serum Cr concentration were 1.66 and 1.96 times greater respectively in rats fed nanoCrpic than in rats fed Crpic (P < 0.05). The average daily gain was greater in rats fed nanoCrpic or Crpic than in control rats (P < 0.05). The high‐density lipoprotein content increased while the very‐low‐density plus low‐density lipoprotein content decreased in rats fed nanoCrpic as compared with rats fed Crpic or CrCl3 (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study indicates that reducing the particle size of Crpic enhances Cr digestibility and absorption in rats and alters some blood metabolite concentrations. The aim of this study was to determine whether dietary protein content influences endogenous ileal lysine flow in the growing rats. Male rats (n = 72; mean body weight 170 g) were given free access to experimental diets for 10 min each hour for 8 h each day. The rats received diets containing 50, 100, 150 or 200 g kg?1 zein for 8 days. Zein is virtually devoid of lysine and this allows a direct determination of gut endogenous lysine losses. The diets were supplemented with synthetic lysine and tryptophan for the first 6 days. Over the final 2 days of the 8‐day period, synthetic lysine and tryptophan were given to the rats via intraperitoneal injections. The rats were euthanized on day 8 and digesta were sampled from the terminal ileum. Digesta were pooled to give a total of six digesta samples for each experimental diet and the flows of endogenous lysine at the terminal ileum were determined by reference to the marker, chromic oxide. Increasing the amount of zein in the diet led to a significant (P < 0.001) increase in the mean flow of endogenous lysine through the terminal ileum from 391 to 558 µg g?1 dry matter intake (overall SEM = 33.3) when the rats received diets containing 50 and 200 g kg?1 zein, respectively. The effect of fructooligosaccharide on protein digestibility and mineral absorption was studied in rats fed diets containing 5 g kg?1 fructooligosaccharide, 5 g kg?1 cellulose/fructooligosaccharide (1:1) or 5 g kg?1 cellulose as a source of dietary fibre. Addition of cellulose/fructooligosaccharide or fructooligosaccharide to the diet did not significantly modify the daily food intake and food efficiency. However, the fructooligosaccharide‐fed group showed a significant decrease in body weight gain compared with cellulose‐fed groups. Faecal excretion was significantly lower when there was fructooligosaccharide intake, despite there being no significant differences in cellulose‐fed groups. Intake of fructooligosaccharide produced an increase in caecal content and an enlargement of the caecal wall. This trophic effect could be attributed to short‐chain fatty acids produced from the anaerobic fermentation of fructooligosaccharide by intestinal bacteria. Cellulose/fructooligosaccharide enhanced the apparent absorption and apparent retention of Ca, Mg, Zn and Fe. Fructooligosaccharide‐fed rats experienced an increase in apparent absorption and apparent retention of Mg compared with cellulose‐fed rats. Fructooligosaccharide intake at the lowest dose was enough to provide a desirable effect on mineral bioavailability in rats without any modification of nutritional parameters. © 2002 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

This study was designed to evaluate the effect of yam tuber material [Dioscorea alata L. var. purpurea (M.) Pouch.] on the amyloid β‐protein (Aβ) accumulation, monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity, cognitive ability and antioxidative defense system in senescence‐accelerated mice (SAMP8). Three‐month‐old male mice were fed with four different diets for 12 weeks: a casein diet (control group) and a casein diet supplemented with either 100, 200 or 400 g kg?1 lyophilized yam. The results of the active shuttle avoidance test showed that the mice fed with the yam‐containing diets had significantly better learning and memory ability than the control group. All yam‐containing diet groups had lower Aβ levels and MAO B activities than the control, whereas the MAO A activity did not differ among the four diet groups. At the 400 g kg?1 level, the yam‐containing diet group showed significantly lower concentration of thiobarbituric acid‐reactive substances (TBARS), higher total thiol level and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in the hippocampus than the control, but these values were not altered by the 100 and 200 g kg?1 yam‐containing diet groups. The addition of 200 or 400 g kg?1 yam also lowered the triglyceride levels but not the total cholesterol concentration. These results indicate that lyophilized yam could reduce brain Aβ accumulation, MAO B activity and cognitive deficits and promote the antioxidative defense system in SAMP8 mice. The improvements were in a dose‐dependent manner, possibly because the 400 g kg?1 yam‐containing diet might contain more antioxidative phytochemicals. The effect of native and defatted leaf protein concentrate (LPC) from red clover on plasma cholesterol level in rats was studied. Fat-free casein was used as a control protein. The native LPC contained 212 g kg?1 of ether extract and oleic acid (C18: 1) was its main fatty acid. LPC protein was relatively poor in sulphur-containing amino acids. Each protein studied was given to rats with or without soya bean oil. It was found that total cholesterol level in plasma of rats fed with the oil-containing diets was higher than that of rats fed with the oil-free diets. Original fat present in the native LPC though rich in unsaturated fatty acids had no hypocholesterolaemic effect. LPC was hypocholesterolaemic compared with casein in diets not containing added soya bean oil, although the difference did not reach statistical significance.  相似文献

Five castrated male Iberian pigs (100 ± 2 kg mean live body weight) fitted with T‐shaped ileal cannulas were used to determine ileal digestibility of legume seed meals. The diets were based on defatted soybean (256 g kg?1), lupin (451 g kg?1) or chickpea (731 g kg?1) seed meals and contained similar amounts of digestible energy (14.2–15.1 kJ g?1) and protein (107 g kg?1). Only myristic acid (C14:0) ileal apparent digestibility was higher (p < 0.05) in lupin than in chickpea meal. Ileal apparent digestibility of unsaturated fatty acids (FA) (710–920 g kg?1) was higher (p < 0.05) than that of saturated (480–710 g kg?1) FA for both seed meals. Ileal digestibility of chickpea starch was 850 g kg?1. Ileal digestibility of oligosaccharides (sucrose, raffinose, stachyose, verbascose and ciceritol) in lupin (820 g kg?1) and chickpea (690 g kg?1) was higher (p < 0.05) than that of defatted soybean (510 g kg?1). However, total amounts of oligosaccharides digested were higher (p < 0.05) for lupin and chickpea meals (29.6 and 24.6 g kg?1 feed respectively) than for soybean (15.2 g kg?1 feed). Among individual non‐starch polysaccharide (NSP) sugars, ileal digestibility values for rhamnose and xylose in lupins were higher (p < 0.05) than those for soybean or chickpea. Ileal digestibility of lupin meal NSP (650 g kg?1) was higher (p < 0.05) than those of soybean (560 g kg?1) or chickpea (430 g kg?1). Up to the terminal ileum, higher (p < 0.05) amounts of lupin total NSP (94.1 g kg?1) than for soybean (24.3 g kg?1) or chickpea (27.1 g kg?1) were digested. Lactate, acetate and isobutyrate concentrations were higher (p < 0.05) in ileal contents of pigs fed lupin and chickpea seed meals compared with soybean‐fed animals. It is concluded that higher lactate and short chain fatty acids concentrations in ileal contents of pigs fed lupin or chickpea seed meals compared with soybean are likely to be the result of higher total amounts of lupin NSP and/or lupin and chickpea oligosaccharides digested up to the terminal ileum. This might have a protective effect on Iberian pig's intestinal physiology. Both lupin and chickpea meals are likely to constitute a valuable alternative to defatted soybean in Iberian pig feeding.
