Interworking between wireless local area network (WLAN) and the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) such as Long Term Evolution (LTE) is facing more and more problems linked to security threats. Securing this interworking is a major challenge because of the vastly different architectures used within each network. Therefore, security is one of the major technical concerns in wireless networks that include measures such as authentication and encryption. Among the major challenges in the interworking security is the securing of the network layer. The goal of this article is twofold. First, we propose a new scheme to secure 3GPP LTE–WLAN interworking by the establishment of an improved IP Security tunnel between them. The proposed solution combines the Internet Key Exchange (IKEv2) with the Host Identity Protocol (HIP) to set up a security association based on two parameters, which are location and identity. Our novel scheme, which is called HIP_IKEv2, guarantees better security properties than each protocol used alone. Second, we benefit from Mobile Internet Key Exchange protocol (MOBIKE) in case of mobility events (handover). And we extend HIP_IKEv2 to HIP_MOBIKEv2 protocol in order to reduce the authentication signaling traffic. The proposed solution reinforces authentication, eliminates man‐in‐the‐middle attack, reduces denial‐of‐service attack, assures the integrity of messages, and secures against reply attack. Finally, our proposed solution has been modeled and verified using the Automated Validation of Internet Security Protocols and Applications and the Security Protocol Animator, which has proved its security when an intruder is present. In recent years, there has been a growing demand in 3G data services, leading to deteriorating 3G service quality. Noting that Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) as well as 3G cellular networks are widely available today, WLANs could be effectively utilized to relieve the overload in the 3G networks. On the other hand, use of IEEE 802.11 WLAN Access Points (APs) has proliferated tremendously, resulting in a communication device inside a mobile vehicle to access the Internet. However, using Internet through APs in moving vehicles is challenging since WLAN APs have a short range and are typically not deployed to cover all roads. Several studies have investigated the performance of using intermittently available WLAN connectivity from moving vehicles for data transfers and predictive offloading in WLAN/3G networks. However, these works have not addressed mobility pattern from the viewpoint that drivers’ mobility is generally known to have a daily routine. Therefore, in this paper, we consider the user’s historical mobility to decide to offload data to WLAN instead of switching to 3G network. The user’s application usage pattern is also considered into predicting available WLANs. To evaluate the performance of our offloading algorithm, we analyze the prediction error and conduct simulations. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves shorter transmission time than the existing schemes that do not consider user’s mobility pattern by delivering more data to the WLANs.  相似文献

To provide mobile users with seamless Internet access anywhere and anytime/ there is a strong demand for interworking mechanisms between cellular networks and wireless local area networks in the next-generation all-IP wireless networks. In this article we focus on resource management and call admission control for QoS support in cellular/WLAN interworking. In specific, a DiffServ interworking architecture with loose coupling is presented. Resource allocation in the interworking environment is investigated/ taking into account the network characteristics, vertical handoff, user mobility, and service types. An effective call admission control strategy with service differentiation is proposed for QoS provisioning and efficient resource utilization. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed call admission control scheme.  相似文献

The WCDMA air interface was initially designed to support a wide variety of services with different QoS requirements having a maximum bit rate of 2 Mb/s. In order to satisfy the future service and application needs several technical enhancements are being studied and standardized for WCDMA in 3GPP. Even with evolved WCDMA, there is a need for another public wireless access solution to cover the demand for data-intensive applications and enable smooth online access to corporate data services in hot spots. This need could be fulfilled by WLAN together with a high-data-rate cellular WCDMA system. WLAN offers an interesting possibility for cellular operators to offer additional capacity and higher bandwidths for end users without sacrificing the capacity of cellular users. The evolved WCDMA air interface will provide better performance and higher bit rates than basic WCDMA, based on first releases of the specifications. Eventually, evolution may not be the answer to all the needs, and come revolutionary concepts need to be considered. However, before some future wireless system can be regarded as belonging to 4G it must possess capabilities that by far exceed those of 3G systems like WCDMA. Judging from an application and services point of view, one distinguishing factor between 3G and 4G will still be the data rate. We could define that 4G should support at least 100 Mb/s peak data rates in full-mobility wide area coverage and 1 Gb/s in low-mobility local area coverage. The interworking technologies to combine multiple WLANs into a single virtual system have not been studied extensively, particularly for legacy wireless networks. In this paper, we study how to provide the inter‐domain authentication among multiple WLAN service providers with minimum overhead. We introduce five inter‐domain authentication methods, referred to as Info‐Sharing, AP‐Seq, AP‐Con, AS‐Seq and AS‐Con, which are designed in the form of an extension to the standard IEEE 802.1x and EAP protocols. In order to evaluate these methods, we compare their authentication time, implementation cost, confidentiality, flexibility and increment of messages. From the evaluation with analysis and experiments, we show that the AS‐Con method can provide the authentication interworking function with minimal overhead on legacy network equipments. Also it is shown that, even though the authentication of AS‐Con takes longer than the previous method, their difference is under one second and insensitive to users. The combination of 3G and WLAN wireless technologies offers the possibility of achieving anywhere, anytime Internet access, bringing benefits to both end users and service providers. We discuss interworking architectures for providing integrated service capability across widely deployed 3G cdma2000-based and IEEE 802.11-based networks. Specifically, we present two design choices for integration: tightly coupled and loosely coupled, and recommend the latter as a preferred option. We describe in detail the implementation of a loosely coupled integrated network which provides two kinds of roaming services, a SimpleIP service and a Mobile-IP service. We present, in detail, two new components used to build these services: a network element called a WLAN integration gateway deployed in WLAN networks; a client software on the mobile device. For a mobile device with interfaces to both technologies, our system supports seamless handoff in the presence of overlapping radio coverage.  相似文献
