ABSTRACT

In recent decades transient test-based techniques (TTBTs) have been used for fault detection in transmission mains. Within TTBTs, the direct transient analysis (DTA) allows the identification of the defects directly by analysing the pressure signal. A possible DTA procedure is based on the analysis of the damping of the pressure peaks. In this paper, it is shown that the pressure decay in a polymeric leaky pipe depends exponentially on leak size and location and the pressure at the leak. It is also shown that, for a given transient, the same damping of the pressure peaks may result from different pipe systems (e.g. with a leak of a different size in a different location).  相似文献

Conventional water pipeline leak detection surveys employ labour-intensive acoustic techniques, which are usually expensive and not amenable for continuous monitoring of distribution systems. Many previous studies attempted to address these limitations by proposing and evaluating a myriad of continuous, long-term monitoring techniques. However, these techniques have difficulty to identify leaks in the presence of pipeline system complexities (e.g. T-joints), offered limited compatibility with popular pipe materials (e.g. PVC), and were in some cases intrusive in nature. Recently, a non-intrusive pipeline surface vibration-based leak detection technique has been proposed to address some of the limitations of the previous studies. This new technique involves continuous monitoring of the change in the cross-spectral density of surface vibration measured at discrete locations along the pipeline. Previously, the capabilities of this technique have been demonstrated through an experimental campaign carried out on a simple pipeline set-up. This paper presents a follow-up evaluation of the new technique in a real-size experimental looped pipeline system located in a laboratory with complexities, such as junctions, bends and varying pipeline sizes. The results revealed the potential feasibility of the proposed technique to detect and assess the onset of single or multiple leaks in a complex system.  相似文献

There are many reports about faulty status in building air-conditioning systems recently. It becomes difficult to keep indoor air temperature appropriately as faults occur, and the faults cause waste of building energy consumption. The model-based fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) methods have been researched for specific parts of air-conditioning system such as chillers, coils, variable air volume units (VAV units), etc. It needs, however, much time and labor to monitor and check every single part because we cannot predict where and when the faults occur. The purpose of this study is to examine indoor air temperature changes and energy consumption increase when faults occur and to develop an easy-to-use FDD tool that helps to find out the faulty place through the whole building air-conditioning system. And then, we treat the reliability of the proposed FDD tool and effectiveness to control of indoor environment deterioration and energy consumption increase by the tool is evaluated based on building air-conditioning system simulation in this paper.  相似文献

The use of herbicides constitutes the principal method of weed control but the introduction of these compounds into the aquatic environment (primarily through runoff) may have severe consequences for non-target plants. In this study, we describe a sensitive and inexpensive method for detection of photosynthesis-inhibiting herbicides, based on chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence emission. Algae exhibited a Chl fluorescence signature with two maxima around 684 and 735 nm, correlated with the total Chl content of the algal suspension. The ratio of these two maxima (i.e. F684/F735) can be used as an indicator of stress in the photosynthetic apparatus, and thus represents a very simple method for in vivo evaluation of the health status of algae. Determination of the F684/F735 fluorescence ratio revealed the presence and phytotoxicity of atrazine, metribuzin, terbuthylazine, diuron, DCPMU, DCPU and paraquat. The toxic effect of these pollutants was estimated by monitoring the increase in the F684/F735 value, which reflects photosystem II and photosystem I photochemistry. We observed a drastic increase in the magnitude of this ratio, correlating quantitatively with herbicide concentration and corresponding to a decline in algal photosynthetic activity. For the tested herbicides affecting photosynthetic electron transport, the magnitude of the effect was as follows: diuron= DCPMU > metribuzin > atrazine > terbuthylazine > paraquat > DCPU. The F684/F735 Chl fluorescence ratio thus gives toxicity responses which compare favourably with tests such as the algal growth inhibition test, and could therefore be used to detect the presence and phytotoxicity of herbicides in aquatic environments.  相似文献

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been widely used in water and wastewater treatment for the removal of organic and inorganic contaminants as well as to improve biodegradability of industrial wastewater. Unfortunately, the partial oxidation of organic contaminants may result in the formation of intermediates more toxic than parent compounds. In order to avoid this drawback, AOPs are expected to be carefully operated and monitored, and toxicity tests have been used to evaluate whether effluent detoxification takes place. In the present work, the effect of AOPs on the toxicity of aqueous solutions of different classes of contaminants as well as actual aqueous matrices are critically reviewed. The dualism toxicity-biodegradability when AOPs are used as pre-treatment step to improve industrial wastewater biodegradability is also discussed. The main conclusions/remarks include the followings: (i) bioassays are a really useful tool to evaluate the dangerousness of AOPs as well as to set up the proper operative conditions, (ii) target organisms for bioassays should be chosen according to the final use of the treated water matrix, (iii) acute toxicity tests may be not suitable to evaluate toxicity in the presence of low/realistic concentrations of target contaminants, so studies on chronic effects should be further developed, (iv) some toxicity tests may be not useful to evaluate biodegradability potential, in this case more suitable tests should be applied (e.g., activated sludge bioassays, respirometry).  相似文献

In this paper, an optimum and intelligent method is proposed for islanding detection using wavelet transform. The suggested relay is based on neural network (NN) in which different heuristic algorithms are used for training the NN. In the proposed method, the appropriate signals for detection procedure as well as mother wavelet are selected optimally, based on the mean square error (MSE) concept. Lately, the desired relay is trained by the optimally selected signals using four different algorithms and the optimum condition of the fault detector is identified. Simulation results approved that non detection zone (NDZ) has a significant reduction utilising the proposed intelligent technique. The contributions of the proposed method include presenting an appropriate signal selection method based on MSE, selecting optimum number of relay input signals using the proposed technique, fast training of intelligent relay by using least information, solving threshold selection problem and reduction of NDZ approximately to zero.  相似文献

Currently in Sweden, the life-cycle measures applied on bridge edge beams may take up to 60% of the total costs incurred along the road bridges’ life span. Moreover, significant disturbances for the road users are caused. Therefore, the Swedish Transport Administration has started a project to develop alternative edge beam design solutions that are better for society in terms of cost. The purpose of this article is to investigate whether these proposals can qualify for more detailed studies through an evaluation and comparison based on a comprehensive life-cycle cost analysis. The alternatives including the standard design are applied to typical Swedish bridges. The impact of the values of the parameters with the largest influence is investigated by sensitivity analyses. Results with different life-cycle strategies are shown. The positive influences in the total life-cycle cost of a stainless steel reinforced solution and of the enhanced construction technique are estimated. The concrete edge beam integrated with the deck seems to be favourable, which is in line with international experience observed. Different designs may be appropriate depending on the bridge case and the life-cycle strategy. The Swedish Transport Administration will carry out a demonstration project in a bridge with one of the proposals.  相似文献

In the present study, large scale geographical variation in the occurrence of organohalogenated pollutants (OHPs) was investigated throughout Europe using eggs of a terrestrial resident passerine species, the blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus). Blue tit eggs from 10 sampling locations, involving suburban, rural and remote areas, in 7 European countries were collected and analysed. Sum polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) levels ranged from 150 ng/g lipid weight (lw) to 2003 ng/g lw. Sum polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) ranged from 3.95 ng/g lw to 114 ng/g lw. As expected, PCB and PBDE concentrations were significantly higher in the sampled suburban locations compared to the rural and remote locations. Sum organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) ranged from 122 ng/g lw to 775 ng/g lw. OCP concentrations were, against the expectations, found to be lower in the rural sampling locations compared to the other locations. Contamination profiles of PCBs, PBDEs and OCPs differed also among the sampling locations, which may be due to local contamination sources. Finally, we compared the results of this study with previously reported OHP concentrations in the eggs of a closely related species, the great tit (Parus major), from the same sampling locations in Europe. We found no differences in concentrations between the species. In addition, we found a significant, positive correlation between the sum PCB concentrations in blue tit eggs and great tit eggs, suggesting similar exposure pathways, mechanisms of accumulation and maternal transfer of PCBs. In conclusion, our results suggest the usefulness of eggs from passerine birds as a biomonitoring tool for OHPs on a large geographical scale.  相似文献

European Directive on Environmental Noise Management set forth the need to undertake strategic noise maps as a diagnostic action for the development of action plans. The competent authorities are faced with the problem of determining which specific measures can be undertaken from a technical and economical standpoint. On the other hand, one of the typical aspects of urban sound environments is the appearance of noticed sound events, occurrences that generate the appearance of sudden increases of sound pressure level, in instantaneous time intervals. In terms of the effect generated on the exposed population, this can cause a great annoyance level due to the large amount of sound energy that sharply affects the population. That is, this type of event increases sensitivity to the surrounding sound environment, heightening perception of the environmental noise, as the sound event becomes the focus of attention. For these reason, this paper studies and analyzes the establishment of a program based on the detection and reduction/elimination of noticed sound events as a tool for inclusion in the action plans against urban noise. In light of the results obtained in this work the night-time periods and residential areas are strongly affected by noticed sound events, which is really significant since those are the urban scenarios where these events have the most potential to impact upon public health through noise annoyance and sleep disturbance. Moreover, the identification and elimination of these sound events can achieve important reductions in the environmental noise of the evaluated location, LAeq.  相似文献

Concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB; e.g. Escherichia coli, and Enterococcus sp.) can only be used in limited ways for determining the source of fecal contamination in recreational waters because they cannot distinguish human from non-human fecal contamination. Several Bacteroides spp. have been suggested as potential alternative indicators. We have developed a rapid, culture-independent method for quantifying fecal Bacteroides spp. using quantitative PCR (QPCR) targeting the 16S rRNA gene. The assay specifically targets and quantifies the most common human Bacteroides spp. The details of the method are presented, including analyses of a wide range of fecal samples from different organisms. Specificity and performance of the QPCR assay were also tested via a laboratory experiment where human sewage and gull guano were inoculated into a range of environmental water samples. Concentrations of fecal Bacteroides spp., total Enterococcus sp., Enterococcus faecium, Enterococcus faecalis, and Enterococcus casseliflavus were measured using QPCR, and total Enterococcus sp. and E. coli were quantified by membrane filtration (MF). Samples spiked with gull guano were highly concentrated with total Enterococcus sp., E. coli, E. faecalis, and E. casseliflavus, demonstrating that these indicators are prominent in animal feces. On the other hand, fecal Bacteroides spp. concentrations were high in samples containing sewage and were relatively low in samples spiked with gull guano. Sensitivity and specificity results suggest that the rapid fecal Bacteroides spp. QPCR assay may be a useful tool to effectively predict the presence and concentration of human-specific fecal pollution.  相似文献

In order to reconcile landscape conservation with changing demands on land use and natural resources, it is essential that the ecological, socio-cultural and economic values of the landscape be fully taken into account in planning and decision-making.This paper presents a comprehensive framework for integrated assessment of ecological services and socio-economic benefits of natural and semi-natural ecosystems and landscapes. The framework can be applied at different scale levels to different ecosystems or landscape-units and basically consists of three steps: (1) Function-analysis: translates ecological complexity into a limited number of ecosystem (or landscape) functions, which, in turn, provide a range of goods and services; (2) Function valuation: includes ecological, socio-cultural and economic valuation methods; and (3) Conflict analysis: to facilitate the application of function-analysis and valuation at different scale levels, it is important to integrate analytical valuation methods with stakeholder participation techniques.The framework presented in this paper facilitates the structured assessment of the (total) value of the goods and services provided by a specific area (landscape) and to analyze the costs and benefits involved in trade-offs between various land use options. The last section of this paper gives some conclusions and recommendations for application-possibilities of function-analysis and valuation to achieve more sustainable landscape use and maintenance of our “natural capital”.  相似文献

Our ability to identify and eliminate fecal contamination of water, now and in the future, is essential to reduce incidences of waterborne disease. Bacterial source tracking is a recently developed approach for identifying sources of fecal pollution. PCR primers designed by Bernhard and Field [Bernhard, A.E., Field, K.G., 2000a. A PCR assay to discriminate human and ruminant feces on the basis of host differences in Bacteroides-Prevotella genes encoding 16S rRNA. Appl. Environ. Microbiol. 66(10), 4571-4574] and Dick et al. [Dick, L.K., Bernhard, A.E., Brodeur, T.J., Santo Domingo, J.W., Simpson, J.M., Walters, S.P., Field, K.G., 2005. Host distributions of uncultivated fecal Bacteroidales bacteria reveal genetic markers for fecal source identification. Appl. Environ. Microbiol. 71(6), 3184-3191] for the detection of human (HF183), pig (PF163) and ruminant (CF128) specific Bacteroidales 16s rRNA genetic markers were tested for their suitability in detecting fecal pollution in Saskatchewan, Canada. The sensitivity and specificity of these primers were assessed by testing eight raw human sewage samples and 265 feces from 12 different species in Saskatchewan. The specificity of each primer set was ≥94%. The accuracy of HF183 and PF163 to distinguish between the different species was 100%, whereas CF128 cross-reacted with 22% of the pig feces. Occurrence of the host-specific Bacteroidales markers and the conventional indicator Escherichia coli in relation to several enteropathogens was investigated in 70 water samples collected from different sites along the Qu'Appelle River (Saskatchewan, Canada). Human and ruminant fecal markers were identified in 41 and 14% of the water samples, respectively, whereas the pig marker was never detected in the river water. The largest concentrations in E. coli counts were concomitant to the simultaneous detection of HF183 and CF128. Thermotolerant Campylobacter spp., Salmonella spp. and Shiga toxin genes (stx1 and stx2)-positive E. coli (STEC) were detected in 6, 7 and 63% of the water samples, respectively. However, none of the stx positive water samples were positive for the E. coli O157:H7 gene marker (uidA). Odds ratios analysis suggests that CF128 may be predictive for the presence of Salmonella spp. in the river investigated. None of the fecal indicators were able to confidently predict the presence of thermotolerant Campylobacter spp. and STEC.  相似文献

We report the results from a pilot study on the use of 222Rn (222radon) for river–aquifer interaction assessment in the Limarí watershed, north‐central Chile. Previous studies on this tool for such applications are not abundant at international level, and no records exist for Chile. The lowest 222Rn levels (less than 1000 Bq/m3) were found in water reservoirs, thus indicating that this isotope is easily lost (and therefore usually absent) in surface waters. Conversely, the highest levels of 222Rn were found in groundwater, with maxima activities around 20 000 Bq/m3. This remarkable contrast allowed clear identification of zones of surface water–groundwater connectivity in the searched watershed domain.  相似文献
