In the Dutch national surveillance system, an increasing number of reports were received in the summer of 2017 from farmers about unusual behavior of their cows. The cows were grouping during the day in summer in one part of the barn and did not move for several hours, which, according to the farmers, led to reduced food and water intake and lying time and resulted in decreased milk production and increased risk of lameness. Many farmers perceived magnetic fields from, for instance, high-voltage lines, automated milking systems, or solar panels as possible causes for the behavior of their cows. Our aim for the study was to study potential factors such as magnetic fields and other factors such as barn climate and insect burden for adverse grouping behavior of dairy cows in the barn. For each case herd, 2 control herds were selected in the same postal area code. A case was a herd in which cattle grouped at least on 7 occasions in a month for several hours. In a control herd, the cows were in the barn during the same time period as in the matching case herd but did not show adverse grouping behavior. A questionnaire was administered by telephone in 31 case herds and 62 control herds. The questionnaire gathered information on behavior of the cows and potential risk factors. In addition, data on the distance of the herd to high-voltage lines was obtained. From a total of 74 variables, all variables with a P-value ≤0.10 were included in full multivariable logistic regression model. Backward selection was carried out at P ≤ 0.10. The grouping behavior of the cows started in most herds in June, was seen only during the day, and lasted mostly 6 to 8 h, with cows often grouped in the northern part of the barn. Identified risk factors appeared to be recently constructed barns, measured stray voltage in barns, and presence of fans in barns. Given the cross-sectional design of the case-control study, causality for these risk factors leading to adverse behavior of the cows could not be proven. Dissemination of the results to farmers hopefully results in measures that can prevent the unusual grouping behavior of cows. 相似文献

Poor stall configuration can negatively affect cow welfare by impairing lying behavior and leading to injuries in dairy cows. The comfort of the stall bed in tiestalls is affected by the material components of the stall bed (stall base and bedding), but also by the amount of space provided. The amount of space cows are able to access lengthwise in a tiestall is determined by the stall bed length and the height of the manger wall (the front limit of the stall bed), which can limit access into the space available at the front of the stall. This project aimed to maximize cow comfort in deep-bedded tiestalls by investigating the combined effect of increased bed length and decreased manger wall height in a crossover experiment (2 periods with 1 wk habituation + 6 wk data collection). Two rows of 12 tiestalls were modified (n = 24 cows). Each row was a different length, short (178 cm; length commonly found in Quebec) or long (188 cm), and cows remained on the same row (same stall bed length) for the entire experiment. In each row, there were 6 stalls of each manger wall height treatment: high (20 cm, upper limit recommended) or low (5 cm). During period 2, cows switched manger wall height treatments. A 7.6-cm-deep straw bedding layer was added to all stalls by adding a bedding keeper to the ends of stalls. All initially injured locations healed over the 14-wk study, and 2 patterns of healing emerged. Improvement in hock injury (lateral tarsal and calcanei) was observed from wk 1 to 6 for all treatments. A plateau in injury severity score reduction was observed in period 2 for the hock (lateral, dorsal, and medial calcanei), anatomical knee, carpal joints (front knees), and proximal and medial neck, which was likely the result of the insensitivity of the injury scoring scheme rather than healing not occurring. Cows in long stalls were found to spend more time lying (14.1 vs. 13.3 h/d) and had longer lying bouts than cows in short stalls (74.1 vs. 52.9 min/bout). Manger wall height did not affect injury or lying time, but may affect how cows position themselves while lying. Higher lying times in our study were comparable to those reported in deep-bedded loose pens, indicating that cows with more bedding, especially those in long stalls, were more comfortable. Our results suggest that deep-bedded straw stalls with bedding keepers have the potential to be beneficial to cow comfort on tiestall farms. 相似文献

The transition period is a demanding phase in the life of dairy cows. Metabolic and infectious disorders frequently occur in the first weeks after calving. To identify cows that are less able to cope with the transition period, physiologic or behavioral signals acquired with sensors might be useful. However, it is not yet clear which signals or combination of signals and which signal properties are most informative with respect to disease severity after calving. Sensor data on activity and behavior measurements as well as rumen and ear temperature data from 22 dairy cows were collected during a period starting 2 wk before expected parturition until 6 wk after parturition. During this period, the health status of each cow was clinically scored daily. A total deficit score (TDS) was calculated based on the clinical assessment, summarizing disease length and intensity for each cow. Different sensor data properties recorded during the period before calving as well as the period after calving were tested as a predictor for TDS using univariate analysis of covariance. To select the model with the best combination of signals and signal properties, we quantified the prediction accuracy for TDS in a multivariate model. Prediction accuracy for TDS increased when sensors were combined, using static and dynamic signal properties. Statistically, the most optimal linear combination of predictors consisted of average eating time, variance of daily ear temperature, and regularity of daily behavior patterns in the dry period. Our research indicates that a combination of static and dynamic sensor data properties could be used as indicators of cow resilience. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to compare the DVE/OEB system (DVE = truly absorbed protein in the small intestine; OEB = degraded protein balance) and the NRC-2001 model in the prediction of supply of protein to dairy cows from selected forages: alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. cv. Pioneer and Beaver) and timothy (Phleum pratense L. cv. Climax and Joliette). Comparisons were made in terms of 1) ruminally synthesized microbial CP, 2) truly absorbed protein in the small intestine, and 3) degraded protein balance. In addition, the effects of variety and cutting stage of the selected forages on the potential nutrient supply to dairy cows were also studied. The results showed that the predicted values from the DVE/OEB system and the NRC-2001 model had significant correlations with high R (>0.96) values. However, using the DVE/OEB system, the overall average microbial protein supply based on available energy was 12% higher, and the truly absorbed protein in the small intestine was 15% lower than that predicted by the NRC-2001 model. The difference was also found in the prediction of the degraded protein balances, which was 11% higher based on data from the NRC-2001 model. These differences are due to considerably different factors used in calculations in the two models, although both are based on similar principles. This indicates that a further refinement is needed for a modern protein evaluation and prediction system. In addition, this study showed that the two alfalfa varieties studied (Pioneer vs. Beaver) had no effect, but cutting stage had a profound influence on ruminally synthesized microbial CP (93, 96, 86 g/kg DM at stage of early bud, late bud, and early bloom, respectively) and truly absorbed intestinal protein predicted by the DVE/OEB system (80, 79, 67 g/kg DM at stage of early bud, late bud, and early bloom, respectively). With timothy, both variety (Climax vs. Joliette) and cutting stage had significant impacts on the potential protein supply predicted by both models. The potential protein supply (DVE or MP) to the dairy cow from Climax timothy was higher than that from Joliette timothy (DVE: 46 vs. 32 g/kg DM; MP: 61 vs. 38 g/kg DM). With increasing stage of cutting, the potential protein supply (DVE or MP) was reduced (DVE: 53, 39, 25 g/kg DM; MP: 62, 51, 36 g/kg DM at stage of joint, prebloom head, and full head, respectively). 相似文献

Body condition score (BCS) is strongly correlated with energy reserves. The ease, rapidity of scoring, and high intra- and inter-observer repeatability make it a widely used herd management tool in bovine practice and in scientific studies. Loss or gain of BCS, rather than a single BCS measurement, is frequently used to monitor energy balance in dairy cows. It is unknown if the difference between 2 BCS measures taken at different moments (ΔBCS) would demonstrate inter-observer agreement similar to that of a single BCS measurement. The objective of this study was to compare inter-observer agreement of BCS and ΔBCS in dairy cows when multiple observers perform data collection. An observational study was conducted between April and September 2015; 3 observers independently assessed BCS of 73 Holstein cows from 1 commercial dairy herd. Body condition score assessments of the animals were performed between 1 and 20 d in milk (early lactation; exam 1) and again between 41 and 60 d in milk (peak of milk production; exam 2). Quadratic weighted kappa (κw) was computed to quantify agreement between observers for single BCS measurements and ΔBCS. For single BCS measurements, κw of 0.79 (95% CI: 0.69, 0.85) and 0.84 (95% CI: 0.77, 0.89) were obtained for exam 1 and exam 2, respectively. Such values would be interpreted as strong agreement and are consistent with the available literature on BCS repeatability. When computing agreement for ΔBCS, a κw value of 0.49 (95% CI: 0.32, 0.63) was obtained, suggesting moderate agreement between observers. These findings suggest that studies investigating single BCS measures could use many observers with a high degree of accuracy in the results. When ΔBCS is the parameter of interest, more reliable results would be obtained if one observer conducts all assessments. 相似文献

Dietary proteins play an important role in reproduction, and increased dietary crude proteins, increased degradability of dietary proteins, and elevated blood or milk urea have been associated with decreased conception and pregnancy in many studies. The aim of this work was to provide a meta-analysis on the relationship between high milk or blood urea and pregnancy or conception, with a focus on defining the appropriate urea threshold associated with this issue. The meta-analysis included 61 different models from 21 papers. The thresholds of urea tested in the various models were built by steps of 1 mM urea. This constructed variable reduced heterogeneity by 61% in the meta-regression. The meta-analysis showed 43% lower odds of pregnancy or conception (odds ratio = 0.57; 95% confidence interval = 0.45–0.73) in cases where urea was ≥7.0 mM in the blood (plasma urea nitrogen = 19.3 mg/dL) or where urea was ≥420 mg/L in the milk compared with where urea values were lower. This threshold is the most suitable with regard to pregnancy or conception success, even if a threshold of 6.5 mM cannot be excluded with certainty. The results also highlighted the possibility of a stronger association between high urea concentrations and pregnancy or conception when high nitrogen exposure occurs before artificial insemination compared with after artificial insemination, but this possibility needs to be further studied. Whether the present results also apply to extensively pasture-based countries remains to be determined. 相似文献

Detection of estrus is a key determinant of profitability of dairy herds, but estrus is increasingly difficult to observe in the modern dairy cow with shorter duration and less-intense estrus. Concurrent with the unfavorable correlation between milk yield and fertility, estrus-detection rates have declined to less than 50%. We tested ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology (Thales Research & Technology Ltd., Reading, UK) for proof of concept that estrus could be detected in dairy cows (two 1-wk-long trials; n = 16 cows, 8 in each test). The 3-dimensional positions of 12 cows with synchronized estrous cycles and 4 pregnant control cows were monitored continuously using UWB mobile units operating within a network of 8 base units for a period of 7 d. In the study, 10 cows exhibited estrus as confirmed by visual observation, activity monitoring, and milk progesterone concentrations. Automated software was developed for analysis of UWB data to detect cows in estrus and report the onset of estrus in real time. The UWB technology accurately detected 9 out of 10 cows in estrus. In addition, UWB technology accurately confirmed all 6 cows not in estrus. In conclusion, UWB technology can accurately detect estrus and hence we have demonstrated proof of concept for a novel technology that has significant potential to improve estrus-detection rates. 相似文献

The current study was conducted to investigate the effects of 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole (DMB) supplementation to the feed during the transition period and early lactation on the vitamin B12 supply, lactation performance, and energy balance in postpartum cows. Twenty-four prepartum Holstein dairy cows were divided into 12 blocks based on their parity and milk yield at the last lactation and were then randomly allocated to 1 of 2 treatments: a basal diet without DMB (control) or a treatment diet that contained 1.5 g of DMB/d per cow. The study started at wk 3 before the expected calving day and ended at wk 8 postpartum. The feed intake and the lactation performance were measured weekly after calving. Blood parameters were measured on d ?10, 0, 8, 15, 29, 43, and 57 relative to the calving day. Body weight was measured on the calving day and on d 57 after calving. The yields of milk, protein, and lactose in cows fed DMB were higher than in the control throughout the whole postpartum stage. On wk 8 postpartum, the vitamin B12 content in the milk and sera was greater in cows fed DMB than in the control. The overall body weight loss from wk 1 to 8 postpartum was less in cows fed DMB than in the control. The plasma content of nonesterified fatty acids and β-hydroxybutyric acid was significantly lower in cows fed DMB than in the control throughout the whole experimental stage. In conclusion, dietary DMB fed during the transition period and early lactation improved the vitamin B12 supply, milk production, and energy balance of postpartum dairy cows. 相似文献

The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between characteristics of the lactation curve, on the basis of daily milk yield, and ovulation within 3 wk postpartum as an indicator of early return to luteal activity in dairy cows. Lactation records from 46 lactating Holstein cows between calving and 305 d postpartum were studied. Milk samples were collected twice weekly between d 7 and 100 for later determination of progesterone concentrations. Occurrence of an early first ovulation was determined by an increase in milk progesterone by 3 wk after calving. Milk yield was recorded daily until 305 d postpartum, and average yield was calculated weekly. The lactation curve was characterized by 8 indices on the basis of the weekly average of milk yield as follows: a) first-week milk yield; b) peak milk yield; c) actual 305-d milk yield; d) peak week; e) difference in milk yield between the first week and peak week; f) difference in milk yield between the peak week and last week (43rd week postpartum); g) ratio of increase in milk yield between wk 1 and the week of peak yield; and h) ratio of decline in milk yield between the week of peak yield and the last week. Indices g and h were calculated as linear. The number of cows having ovulated by 3 wk postpartum was 22 (47.8%). The resumption of ovarian cycles with normal luteal phases occurred earlier in ovular cows than in anovular cows (32.0 d vs. 57.1 d). Although total milk yield did not differ between ovular and anovular cows, the ratio of increase in milk yield from the first week to the peak week (index g) in ovular cows was smaller compared with that of anovular cows (1.71 vs. 2.54). In addition, the ratio of increase in milk yield from the first week to the third week postpartum was greater in anovular cows by 3 wk postpartum (ovular = 1.43 ± 0.23 vs. anovular = 2.32 ± 0.29). In conclusion, the present study demonstrates that a greater increasing ratio of milk yield during early lactation may delay resumption of ovarian cycles after parturition. Therefore, this study is the first to demonstrate statistically that a smaller increasing ratio of milk yield (index g) during early lactation may have a beneficial effect on the first ovulation by 3 wk postpartum. 相似文献

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between the efficiency of conversion of feed N into milk N [N-use efficiency (NUE)] and 15N enrichment of milk casein from lactating cows fed corn silage-based diets. Samples of feeds and milk were obtained from 3 experiments with lactating dairy cows. All diets were based on corn silage and were designed to evaluate the effects of (1) diets with different ratios of effective rumen-degradable protein to fermentable metabolizable energy (experiment 1), (2) different proportions of quickly and slowly rumen-degradable protein (experiment 2), and (3) synchronizing the availability of fermentable metabolizable energy and effective rumen-degradable protein in the rumen (experiment 3). Although no significant effect of diet on casein δ15N values was detected, casein was more enriched than the diet in each of the experiments. Nitrogen-use efficiency was negatively related to adjusted Δ15N (casein δ15N − diet δ15N) for experiments 1 and 2 individually and when combining data from all 3 experiments. The relatively low values for Δ15N suggest that these productive animals were using dietary N efficiently, with a high proportion of N going to milk protein and less to urea. The weak, although significant, relationship between NUE and adjusted Δ15N, is consistent with relatively little variation in hepatic deamination and transamination, with variation in rumen efficiency having the predominant effect on NUE. The present study confirms the lower 15N enrichment in protein when NUE is high and the potential to use N-isotope fractionation as a marker of NUE. 相似文献

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) affects many physiological functions because it is involved in glucose and lipid metabolism, calcium homeostasis, and regulation of lactation in dairy cows. This study aimed to examine physiological differences in serum 5-HT concentrations (high vs. low) and their association with metabolic status and milk production at the onset of lactation. Twelve multiparous Holstein dairy cows were milked within 4 h of calving, and blood and milk samples were collected at the first 6 subsequent milkings after parturition and at the evening milkings on d 5, 8, 10, and 14. Cows were retrospectively divided into 2 groups (6 cows/group): low serum 5-HT (LSS) and high serum 5-HT (HSS) according to their calculated areas under the curve (AUC) for serum 5-HT for the entire experimental period (cut-off: 46,000 ng/mL × 324 h). Concentrations of 5-HT, free fatty acids (FFA), β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), glucose, calcium, and IGF-1 were measured in blood. Milk was analyzed for fat, protein, lactose, and 5-HT concentrations. Milk yield was recorded at each milking and energy-corrected milk yield was calculated. Serum 5-HT concentrations were higher in HSS than in LSS [AUC (ng/mL × 324 h): 57,830 ± 4,810 vs. 25,005 ± 5,930]. The amount of energy-corrected milk was lower in HSS than in LSS. The HSS group produced less colostrum and had decreased milk yield, specifically during the first 6 milkings. Concentrations of FFA, BHB, and glucose in plasma did not differ between groups. Concentrations of IGF-1 in serum were elevated in HSS compared with LSS throughout the experiment. Total circulating calcium concentrations in serum tended to be higher in HSS than in LSS. Milk fat and protein yields were decreased in HSS compared with LSS. Milk 5-HT decreased overall during the experimental period, with LSS maintaining higher 5-HT concentrations than HSS until d 14 of lactation. In conclusion, cows with high serum 5-HT concentrations showed a reduced metabolic load at the onset of lactation, concomitantly lower milk yield, and a reduced energy output via milk. 相似文献

Although milk fat depression (MFD) has been observed and described since the beginning of the last century, all the molecular and biochemical mechanisms involved are still not completely understood. Some fatty acids (FA) originating during rumen biohydrogenation have been proposed as causative elements of MFD. However, contradictory results were obtained when studying the effect of single FA on MFD. An alternative could be the simultaneous evaluation of the effect of many FA using a multivariate approach. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between individual milk FA of ruminal origin and MFD using canonical discriminant analysis, a multivariate technique able to distinguish 2 or more groups on the basis of a pool of variables. In a commercial dairy herd, a diet containing 26% starch on a DM basis induced an unintentional MFD syndrome in 14 cows out of 40. Milk yielded by these 14 animals showed a fat content lower than 50% of the ordinary value, whereas milk production and protein content were normal. The remaining 26 cows secreted typical milk fat content and therefore were considered the control group, even though they ate the same diet. The stepwise discriminant analysis selected 14 milk FA of ruminal origin most able to distinguish the 2 groups. This restricted pool of FA was used, as variables, in a run of the canonical discriminant analysis that was able to significantly discriminate between the 2 groups. Out of the 14 FA, 5 conjugated linoleic acid isomers (C18:2 trans-10,trans-12, C18:2 trans-8,trans-10, C18:2 trans-11,cis-13, C18:2 cis-9,cis-11, C18:2 cis-10,cis-12) and C15:0 iso were more related to the control group, whereas C18:2 trans-10,cis-12, C16:1 trans-6–7, C16:1 trans-9, C18:1 trans-6–8, C18:1 trans-9, C18:1 trans-10, C18:1 cis-11, and C18:3n-3 were positively associated with the MFD group, allowing a complete discrimination. On the basis of these results, we can conclude that (1) the shift of ruminal biohydrogenation from C18:1 trans-11 to C18:1 trans-10 seemed to be strongly associated with MFD; (2) at the same time, other C18:1 trans isomers showed a similar association; (3) on the contrary, conjugated linoleic acid isomers other than C18:2 trans-10,cis-12 seemed to be associated with a normal fat secretion. Results confirmed that MFD is the consequence of a combined effect of the outflow of many ruminal FA, which collectively affect mammary fat synthesis. Because the animals of the 2 groups were fed the same diet, these results suggested that factors other than diet are involved in the MFD syndrome. Feeding behavior (i.e., ability to select dietary ingredients in a total mixed ration), rumen environment and the composition of ruminal bacteria are additional factors able to modify the products of rumen biohydrogenation. Results of the present work confirmed that the multivariate approach can be a useful tool to evaluate a metabolic pathway that involves several parameters, providing interesting suggestions about the role of some FA involved in MFD. However, results about the MFD syndrome obtained in the present research require a deep molecular investigation to be confirmed. 相似文献

It has been demonstrated that low body condition and previous occurrence of lameness increase the risk of future lameness in dairy cows. To date the population attributable fraction (PAF), which provides an estimate of the contribution that a risk factor makes toward the total number of disease events in a population, has not been explored for lameness using longitudinal data with repeated measures. Estimation of PAF helps to identify control measures that could lead to the largest improvements on-farm. The aim of this study was to use longitudinal data to evaluate the proportion of lameness that could be avoided in 2 separate herds (2 populations) through (1) reduced recurrence of previous lameness events, (2) and moving body condition score (BCS) into more optimal ranges. Data were obtained from 2 UK dairy herds: herd A, a 200-cow herd with 8 yr of data from a total of 724 cows where lameness events were based on weekly locomotion scores (LS; 1 to 5 scale), and herd B, a 600-cow herd with data recorded over 44 mo from a total of 1,040 cows where treatment of clinical cases was used to identify lameness events. The PAF for categories of BCS were estimated using a closed equation appropriate for multiple exposure categories. Simulation models were used to explore theoretical scenarios to reflect changes in BCS and recurrence of previous lameness events in each herd. For herd A, 21.5% of the total risk periods (cow-weeks) contained a lameness event (LS 3, 4, or 5), 96% of which were repeat events and 19% were recorded with BCS <2 (3 wk previously; 0 to 5 scale). When lameness events were based on 2 consecutive weeks of LS 4 or 5, 4% of risk periods were recorded as lame, of which 89.5% were repeat events. For herd B, 16.3% of the total risk periods (consecutive 30 d) contained a lameness event (72.6% were repeat events) and 20% were recorded with BCS ≤2 (0 to 120 d previously). The median PAF for all previous lameness was between 79 and 83% in the 2 herds. Between 9 and 21% of lameness events could be attributed to previous lameness occurring >16 wk before a risk period. The median PAF estimated for changes in BCS were in the region of 4 to 11%, depending on severity of lameness. Repeated bouts of lameness made a very large contribution to the total number of lameness events. This could either be because certain cows are initially susceptible and remain susceptible, due to the increased risk associated with previous lameness events, or due to interactions with environmental factors. This area requires further research. 相似文献

The milk production of a dairy cow is characterized by lactation production, which is calculated from daily milk yields (DMY) during lactation. The DMY is calculated from one or more milkings a day collected at the farm. Various milking systems are in use today, resulting in one or many recorded milk yields a day, from which different calculations are used to determine DMY. The primary objective of this study was to develop a mathematical function that described milk production of a dairy cow in relation to the interval between 2 milkings. The function was partly based on the biology of the milk production process. This function, called the 3K-function, was able to predict milk production over an interval of 12 h, so DMY was twice this estimate. No external information is needed to incorporate this function in methods to predict DMY. Application of the function on data from different milking systems showed a good fit. This function could be a universal tool to predict DMY for a variety of milking systems, and it seems especially useful for data from robotic milking systems. Further study is needed to evaluate the function under a wide range of circumstances, and to see how it can be incorporated in existing milk recording systems. A secondary objective of using the 3K-function was to compare how much DMY based on different milking systems differed from that based on a twice-a-day milking. Differences were consistent with findings in the literature. 相似文献

This study aimed to evaluate changes in the epidemiological status of Coxiella burnetii in dairy cattle herds to better understand the epidemiology of the infection and to predict its evolution. Bulk-tank milk (BTM) and serum samples were collected from 94 dairy cattle herds and analyzed by ELISA (BTM and sera) and PCR (BTM) in study 1 (S1). Two years later (study 2; S2), the same farms were visited with a similar sampling approach. To estimate seroconversion during this period, blood samples were collected from the maximum possible number of animals surveyed in S1. Environmental samples were collected in S2 to identify active shedding. Farms were allocated into 3 different categories in each study according to PCR and ELISA results: category A, with BTM ELISA and PCR positive herds and at least 1 seropositive animal; category B, with BTM ELISA or PCR positive herds or individual sera positive; and category C, with all negative results among herds. Changes in herd category between S1 and S2 were grouped in 9 classes. Two statistical models, one to search for drives of within-herd changes in C. burnetii infection status and another to look for variables modulating individual changes in C. burnetii antibody level, were built. Several herds in category A in S1 remained in that category 2 yr later, indicating that C. burnetii can remain within a herd for a long time. Most of the herds with seroconversion and detection of the bacterium in the environment belonged to category A, suggesting active and recent infections. Changes in the epidemiological status of herds were driven by local densities of domestic ruminants, showing the implication of neighbor reservoirs; whereas individual changes in antibody levels were modulated by variation in the epidemiological status of herds. Observed changes in epidemiological status allowed depiction of the hypothesized life cycle of C. burnetii within dairy cattle herds, which should be tested by future long-term series studies on C. burnetii infection to help fitting control measures (e.g., vaccination) to within-herd C. burnetii status. 相似文献
