Two compounds identified as components of the sex pheromone system ofRhyacionia frustrana are (E)-9-dodecen-1-yl acetate (I) and (E)-9,11-dodecadien-1-yl acetate (II), which were found in female gland extracts in the ratio of 964, respectively. The identifications were based on chemical and instrumental analyses, electroantennogram studies, and field trapping tests. The optimum ratio for trapping maleR. frustrana is the range of 955 to 97.52.5 (III), when dispensed from rubber septa at a loading of ca. 1000/g/lure. In addition to these two compounds, evidence was obtained for the presence of dodecan-1-ol and (E)-9-dodecen-1-ol in female tip extracts and in female effluvium, and for dodecan-1-yl acetate in female tip extracts.Lepidoptera: Tortricidae: Olethreutinae.Supported in part by the Rockefeller Foundation and by National Science Foundation grants GB-38020 and PCM 78-13241.  相似文献

Analysis of frass extracts and aerations from adult beetles confirmed earlier studies identifying 1-heptanol as a principal pheromone constituent produced by female Dendroctonus jeffreyi Hopkins. The aerations also indicated that males produced 33% (+) and 67% (–)-frontalin, previously unreported for this species, and >99% (+)-exo-brevicomin. Both males and females were responsive to these compounds in electrophysiological studies. Laboratory bioassays and field trapping experiments indicated that males and females were attracted to a mixture of 1-heptanol plus the principal host resin component heptane, but females were less attracted than males. Inclusion of racemic exo-brevicomin at 0.1% concentration in the traps increased the response of females. Inclusion of racemic frontalin above a 1% concentration in the normally attractive lures blocked arrival of beetles to the traps. While the female-produced pheromone components and host synergists are very different between the sibling species D. jeffreyi and Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins, the principal male-produced compounds are the same, and the response of the female beetles to those compounds appears to be similar.  相似文献

Plant volatile compounds synergize attraction of codling moth males Cydia pomonella to sex pheromone (E,E)-8,10-dodecadien-1-ol (codlemone). Several apple volatiles, known to elicit a strong antennal response, were tested in a wind tunnel. Two-component blends of 1 pg/min codlemone and 100 pg/min of either racemic linalool, (E)-beta-farnesene, or (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol attracted significantly more males to the source than codlemone alone (60, 58, 56, and 37%, respectively). In comparison, a blend of codlemone and a known pheromone synergist, dodecanol, attracted 56% of the males tested. Blends of pheromone and plant volatiles in a 1:100 ratio attracted more males than 1:1 or 1:10,000 blends. Adding two or four of the most active plant compounds to codlemone did not enhance attraction over blends of codlemone plus single-plant compounds. Of the test compounds, only farnesol was attractive by itself; at a release rate of 10,000 pg/min, 16% of the males arrived at the source. However, attraction to a 1:10,000 blend of codlemone and farnesol (42%) was not significantly different from attraction to codlemone alone (37%). In contrast, a codlemone mimic, (E)-10-dodecadien-1-ol, which attracted 2% males by itself, had a strong antagonistic effect when blended in a 1:10,000 ratio with codlemone.  相似文献

In a previous study, comparison of the behavior of teneral Glossina morsitans morsitans on waterbuck, Kobus defassa (a refractory host), and on two preferred hosts, buffalo, Syncerus caffer, and ox, Bos indicus, suggested the presence of allomones in the waterbuck odor. Examination of the volatile odors by coupled gas chromatography–electroantennographic detection showed that the antennal receptors of the flies detected constituents common to the three bovids (phenols and aldehydes), as well as a series of compounds specific to waterbuck, including C8C13 methyl ketones, -octalactone, and phenols. In this study, behavioral respones of teneral G. m. morsitans to different blends of these compounds were evaluated in a choice wind tunnel. The flies' responses to known or putative attractant blends (the latter comprising EAG-active constituents common to all three animals and those common to buffalo and ox, excluding the known tseste attractants, 4-methylphenol and 3-n-propylphenol), and to putative repellent (the blend of EAG-active compounds specific to the waterbuck volatiles), were different. A major difference related to their initial and final behaviors. When a choice of attractant blends (known or putative) and clean air was presented, flies initially responded by flying upwind toward the odor source, but later moved downwind and rested on either side of the tunnel, with some preference for the side with the odor treatments. However, when presented with a choice of waterbuck-specific blend (putative repellent) and clean air, the flies' initial reaction appeared random; flies flew upwind on either side, but eventually settled down on the odorless side of the tunnel. Flies that flew up the odor plume showed an aversion behavior to the blend. The results lend further support to previous indications for the existence of a tsetse repellent blend in waterbuck body odor and additional attractive constituents in buffalo and ox body odors.  相似文献

Host location cues for parasitic wasps that attack bark beetle larvae concealed under the bark of spruce trees were analyzed by collecting odor samples from entrance holes into the bark beetle galleries, isolated larvae, and pupal chambers with or without bark beetle larvae. Odor samples were collected by dynamic headspace adsorptions on Porapak Q or static adsorptions by using solid-phase microextraction (SPME) with Carbowax–divinylbenzene as the adsorbing phase. Samples were analyzed by coupled gas chromatographic–electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) and GC-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The antennae of Rhopalicus tutela females responded primarily to oxygenated monoterpenes that are typical for damaged host trees. These compounds are attractive to bark beetle parasitoids in long-range host location, suggesting that they are used in both long- and short-range host location. No differences could be detected between samples collected from pupal chambers with or without mature larvae. Larvae outside pupal chambers emitted low quantities of the same compounds present in empty pupal chambers. The data support the hypothesis that volatiles used by host foraging parasitoids arise from the interaction between introduced microorganisms and the bark and/or vascular tissue of the host tree rather than from the bark beetle larvae.  相似文献

We determined variation in both the concentration and composition of terpenoids in needles and wood within nine Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) provenances. Seedlings of different provenances representing a 1200-km N–S transect from Estonia to northern Finland were cultivated in Suonenjoki nursery field, central Finland, for seven years. Growth of seedlings and the number of vertical resin ducts in wood were also determined. -Pinene and 3-carene were the major monoterpenes both in the needles and wood. The total monoterpene concentration was about five times higher in the needles than in the wood. A strong positive correlation was found between proportional quantities of several terpenes of the needles and wood, particularly for 3-carene, sabinene, and terpinolene. The needles contained both labdane-type and tricyclic resin acids, whereas the wood contained only tricyclic ones. The wood had a four times higher tricyclic resin acid concentration than the needles. The highest total monoterpene concentration in the needles and in the wood occurred in the most northern Muonio provenance and in the most southern Saaremaa provenance plants, respectively. The amount of high 3-carene genotype trees decreased among the northern provenances. The wood of the most northern Muonio provenance showed the lowest total resin acid concentration, but provenance did not affect total tricyclic resin acids in the needles. Korpilahti provenance trees from central Finland had the best growth in height. In addition, Korpilahti and Ruokolahti provenance trees showed largest radial growth of stem and smallest number of vertical resin ducts. The results suggest that especially the proportional quantity of 3-carene in the needles could be used in estimating the amount of this compound in the wood and vice versa.  相似文献

The pine shoot beetle Tomicus destruens has two dispersal phases per generation. In the first, mature adults move toward trunks of dying pines to lay eggs; in the second, callow adults move toward the shoots of healthy pines for maturation feeding. However, there is no information on the chemical stimuli that govern host selection by T. destruens adults. The aims of this study were: (1) to identify the volatiles released by shoots and bark of stone pine that are behaviorally and electrophysiologically active on T. destruens; (2) to verify which blends and concentrations of such volatiles are differently active on males and females, as well as on callow and mature adults, during the two host search phases (breeding and feeding). A four-arm olfactometer was used to test the behavior of walking T. destruens adults toward various sources of volatiles including fresh shoots and bark, their collected volatiles, and two synthetic blends. For each odor, the behavior of both callow and mature males and females was recorded individually. Shoot and bark extracts were analyzed by coupled gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and tested by gas chromatography coupled with electroantennography (GC-EAD) on T. destruens males and females. Two blends of two (alpha-pinene and beta-myrcene; blend A) and three (alpha-pinene, beta- myrcene, and alpha-terpinolene; blend B) synthetic compounds, chosen among those that induce EAD responses and known to be attractive for other bark beetle species, were tested in the olfactometer at five concentrations. Insect behavior was affected by the degree of sexual maturation but not by sex. Callow insects were attracted by shoots and their extracts, while mature individuals by bark and its extracts. Six extracted compounds were active on T. destruens antennae: limonene, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol and beta-caryophyllene, alpha-pinene, beta-myrcene, and alpha-terpinolene. alpha-Terpinolene, released only by bark, was active only on mature insects, whereas (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, released only by shoots, was active only on callows. Males and females showed similar EAD responses. Of the six extracted volatiles, two were attractive for callow adults (blend A) and three for matures (blend B). In both cases, responses were positively correlated with blend concentration, although a repellent effect was noted at the highest concentrations.  相似文献

Variation in the growth, chemical defense, and susceptibility to monophagous and polyphagous sucking herbivores was assessed for four Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) provenances in Petri dish and pot experiments. Seed provenances, Muonio (MU), Suomussalmi (SU), Korpilahti (KO), and Saaremaa (SA) represented a 1200-km N–S gradient. Scots pines from SU were least preferred as a host plant by pine-feeding aphids Schizolachnus pineti Fabr. and Eulachnus agilis, and in pot experiments, pines from SA were most preferred. S. pineti also produced the fewest nymphs on pines from SU. Polyphagous Lygus rugulipennis laid significantly fewer eggs on pines from MU provenance, which were smaller than seedlings from other provenances. The total and some individual terpene concentrations increased, while the total resin acid concentration decreased, towards the north. The absolute concentrations of total or individual terpenes and resin acids in the needles of unfavored SU plants did not differ significantly from the other provenances. Only the proportional quantity of dehydroabietic acid was higher in SU plants than in KO plants, and it correlated, together with sandaracopimaric acid, negatively with the number of S. pineti nymphs in the reproduction experiment. Conversely, absolute concentrations of some terpenes correlated negatively and some resin acids positively with the number of S. pineti nymphs. The length and weight of shoots decreased towards the north, adequately explaining the number of Lygus eggs and the final numbers of both aphids. The results suggest that seedling size is a better estimator of susceptibility of pine seedlings to both specialist and generalist sucking insects than relative or absolute concentrations of monoterpenes and resin acids.  相似文献

Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and gas chromatography coupled with electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) were used to identify a new blend of volatiles from apples as the key attractants for the apple maggot fly, Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh). The new five-component blend contains butyl butanoate (10%), propyl hexanoate (4%), butyl hexanoate (37%), hexyl butanoate (44%), and pentyl hexanoate (5%) compared with a previously reported seven-component mix of hexyl acetate (35%), (E)-2-hexen-1-yl acetate (2%), butyl 2-methylbutanoate (8%), propyl hexanoate (12%), hexyl propanoate (5%), butyl hexanoate (28%), and hexyl butanoate (10%). Volatiles from five different varieties of apple elicited reproducible and high EAD responses from R. pomonella antennae to the same five chemicals. In flight-tunnel choice tests involving red sticky spheres with odor sources, the new five-component blend of apple volatiles showed significantly more activity than the previous seven-component blend or the single compound, butyl hexanoate. In a field trial captures with the new five-component blend were better than with butyl hexanoate, which is currently used with commercial apple maggot monitoring spheres.  相似文献

Capillary GC analysis was used to determine the proportion and quantity of terpenes in wood resin, pentane extracts from needles and liber, and headspace samples of needles and pruning wounds in 24 thirteen-year-old maritime pine. Fifteen different terpenes were identified in the samples. Germacrene D and -pinene were the dominant terpenic compounds in the needles, while -pinene and -pinene were dominant in the liber and wood resin. Headspace samples of both needles and pruning wounds contained essentially monoterpenes. Only trace amounts of sesquiterpenes were found in pruning wound emissions. The presence of an oxygenated compound, linalool, in the pruning wound emissions is discussed, although this compound is not found in Maritime pine essential oil. Twelve of the 24 trees studied were infested by Dioryctria sylvestrella. Maritime pine susceptibility to this insect was related to the terpene composition of the different samples.  相似文献

Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and gas chromatography coupled with electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) were used to identify volatile compounds from shoots of riverbank grape (Vitis riparia) that attract the female grape berry moth (GBM, Paralobesia viteana). Consistent EAD activity was obtained for 11 chemicals: (Z)-3-hexen-1-yl acetate, (E)-linalool oxide, (Z)-linalool oxide, nonanal, linalool, (E)-4,8-dimethyl-1,3,7-nonatriene, methyl salicylate, decanal, beta-caryophyllene, germacrene-D, and alpha-farnesene. In flight-tunnel tests that involved female GBM and rubber septa loaded with subsets of these 11 compounds, we found that both the 11-component blend and a seven-component blend, composed of (E)-linalool oxide, (Z)-linalool oxide, nonanal, (E)-4,8-dimethyl-1,3,7-nonatriene, decanal, beta-caryophyllene and germacrene-D, elicited equivalent levels of upwind flight as freshly cut grape shoots. The removal of any of the seven compounds from the seven-component blend resulted in a significant decrease in female upwind flight responses. In a field trial with these two synthetic blends, traps equipped with either blend captured more female GBM compared to traps baited with hexane only (control), although the number of females caught was generally low. There were no differences in the number of males captured among treatments. Although in flight-tunnel trials, moths readily flew upwind to both grape shoots and rubber septa loaded with the best lures, they landed on shoots but not on rubber septa. Coupled with relatively low field catches, this suggests that additional host finding cues need to be identified to improve trap efficacy.  相似文献

Neural responses of the Colorado potato beetle (CPB), Leptinotarsa decemlineata to volatiles emitted by potato plants, Solanum tuberosum L were investigated. Amplitudes of electroantennograms to measured amounts of a standard odorant, (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, increased from day of emergence through at least six to eight days of adulthood. Among 20 potato volatiles examined, several constitutive compounds, e.g., the green leaf volatiles (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, (E)-2-hexen-1-ol, and (Z)-3-hexenyl butyrate, and systemic volatiles released primarily in response to insect feeding, e.g., (±)-linalool, nonanal, methyl salicylate, and indole, were the most effective stimuli. A statistic called linear age-skew (linear orthogonal polynomial) was used to examine differences in responses to potato volatiles between young and mature CPB. Based on plots of linear age-skew and overall neural responsiveness, 10 volatiles could be identified for which responses increased at a rate similar to or greater than the standard. The results are discussed with regard to the relationship of the CPB to its host plant and developmental studies of insect sensory responses to chemical signals.  相似文献

Plant volatiles from cabbage and chrysanthemum were studied as to how they affect behavior of the cabbage moth, Mamestra brassicae (L.). Chemical, electrophysiological, and behavioral techniques were used. The electroantennographic (EAG) evaluation of selected compounds from Brassi-caceae showed that isothiocyanates (NCS) elicited weak responses, and some did not evoke significant EAG responses at all. Green leaf volatiles (GLVs) evoked the strongest responses in both male and female antennae. The capacity of NCS to stimulate upwind flight of mated females was not different at doses of 10–7, 10–6, or 10–5 g when tested in a wind tunnel. At the higher doses, allyl NCS stimulated upwind flight in the females more than the other compounds. Allyl NCS was significantly better than the other compounds at stimulating females to land on targets. Mated females flew upwind and landed on the targets with allyl NCS more often than virgin females and males. With respect to the behavioral activity of GLVs, only (E)-2-hexenal and (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate elicited upwind flight and landing in females. Ten compounds were identified from a chrysanthemum extract by using coupled gas chromatography–electroantennography. Five of these, (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, 1-8-cineole, -terpinene, chrysanthenone, and camphor, elicited upwind flight of mated females, but only three stimulated landing.  相似文献

Y-tube olfactometer bioassays and combined gas chromatography–electroantennographic detector (GC-EAD) analyses were performed to investigate the specific odors utilized as host location cues by the bark beetle parasitoid, Roptrocerus xylophagorum, originating from the southeastern United States. R. xylophagorum parasitizes several economically important holarctic bark beetle species and females oviposit preferentially on late larval stages. Both female and male parasitoids were tested with volatiles derived from host infestations of either Dendroctonus frontalis, the southern pine beetle, or Ips grandicollis, the southern pine engraver. Tested volatiles were steam distillates from the bark of loblolly pine, Pinus taeda, infested with larvae of the respective bark beetle species. Combined gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was employed for identification and quantification of the compounds in the steam distillates. To confirm the EAD activity of identified compounds, GC-EAD analyses were repeated with a synthetic blend composed predominantly of compounds in the crude extracts that had revealed apparent electrophysiological activity. In Y-olfactometer bioassays, female parasitoids were attracted to both of the above-mentioned distillates. Male parasitoids were tested with one of the distillates but failed to respond. In GC-EAD analyses, the sexes displayed similar relative sensitivities to the components of the blends. Males exhibited generally higher amplitudes of response to the tested compounds than females. Monoterpene hydrocarbons associated with the constitutive resin of the host tree did not elicit significant EAD responses. Compounds known to be associated specifically with the host–tree complex, such as certain oxygenated monoterpenes, generated the greatest EAD responses. Female parasitoids were attracted by a synthetic blend composed of several of the EAD active oxygenated monoterpenes.  相似文献

Apple volatiles stimulated pheromone release, oviposition, and upwind orientation in female codling moths, Cydia pomonella. Green apples increased the percentage of virgin females calling, the duration of female calling, and advanced the onset of egg-laying in gravid females. In a tube olfactometer, both virgin and mated females were more active in the presence of apple volatiles than in clean air. They responded by walking while wing-fanning; mated females showed a stronger attraction response than unmated females.  相似文献

The volatiles emitted by fresh whole flowers and isolated flower organs of male, female, and hermaphrodite carob trees (Ceratonia siliqua L.; Leguminosae) were analyzed by headspace solid-phase microextraction followed by capillary gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The headspace of carob flowers is mainly constituted of high amounts of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, and more than 25 compounds were identified. The gender and cultivar affected both the qualitative profile and the relative abundances of the volatiles of whole flowers and isolated floral organs. Linalool and its derivatives (cis-linalool furan oxide, 2,2,6-trimethyl-3-keto-6-vinyltetrahydropyran, cis-linalool pyran oxide, and trans-linalool furan oxide), α-pinene, and α-farnesene were the dominant volatiles. Female flowers had a higher diversity of volatile compounds than males and hermaphrodites, but a lower abundance of the major ones. Similarly, the floral scent of female flowers of cv. Mulata had a higher content of volatiles but a lower abundance of the major ones, when compared to cv. Galhosa. In each of the three gender types of flowers, the nectary disks seemed to be the major source of volatiles.  相似文献

European grapevine moth females (Lobesia botrana, Lepidoptera Tortricidae) select an oviposition site by tasting the host plant surface and then gluing a single egg on berries from grapes or from several other host plant species. In doing so, females should avoid ovipositing on plants that are detrimental to their progeny. Do they sense the same deterrent compounds as larvae, despite the fact that they do not have access to the same compartments of the plants? We tested this hypothesis with 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E), purified from Leuzea carthamoides. Phytoecdysteroids are usually found inside plant tissues and accessible to larvae in an aqueous phase, while adults would access them only through the epicuticular wax. We first confirmed that larvae avoid feeding on 20E and that they taste 20E with their lateral sensilla styloconica, at a threshold of 10?6 M. Then, we tested whether adult females avoid ovipositing on glass spheres sprayed with 20E. When given a choice, females avoided laying eggs on a treated surface, at a threshold of 8 ng/cm2. In addition, they deposited significantly fewer eggs in the presence of 20E. Presuming that legs play an important role in assessing the oviposition substrate, we assessed the sensitivity of their taste receptors. In females, 14 taste sensilla are located on the ventral side of the last tarsus of the prothoracic leg. One group of these sensilla house one neuron that is sensitive to 20E, with a detection threshold of about 10?7 M. The same molecule is thus sensed both in larvae and adults of L. botrana where it respectively inhibits feeding and oviposition.  相似文献

The emission of inducible volatile organic compounds (VOCs), i.e., inducible terpenes, and green leaf volatiles (GLVs), is a common response of plants to herbivore attack. These VOCs are involved in the orientation of natural enemies, i.e., predators and parasitoids, toward their herbivore prey or hosts (indirect defense of plants). Terpenes and some GLVs are readily oxidized by ozone (O3), an important oxidant of the low atmosphere and predicted to increase as a result of anthropogenic activity. It has been recently reported that O3 degradation of terpenes and GLVs does not affect signaling in two selected tritrophic systems. Natural enemies may have learned to use oxidation products that are more stable in nature to locate their prey. To understand the role of these compounds on the tritrophic system Brassica oleracea–Plutella xylostella–Cotesia plutellae, we assessed the preference of wasps to different combinations of cabbage VOCs (intact vs. herbivore-induced and herbivore-induced vs. herbivore-induced VOCs) in the presence or absence of O3. We found that C. plutellae preferred P. xylostella-damaged plants at 0 and 120 nl l−1 O3 to intact plants at 0 nl l−1 O3. However, wasps preferred P. xylostella-damaged plants at 0 nl l−1 to P. xylostella-damaged plants at 120 nl l−1 O3. The results suggest that compounds other than terpenes and GLVs are crucial for the orientation of the wasps, but terpenes and GLVs contribute to the behaviorally active VOC blend of herbivore-damaged cabbages by increasing their attraction to them. The products resulting from oxidation of terpenes and GLVs do not seem to play a role in the host location process as speculated previously.  相似文献

The genetic nature of pheromone variation within species has rarely been studied, and never for male-produced long-range pheromones. Males from western North American populations of Ips pini produce predominantly (R)-(−)-ipsdienol, whereas those from eastern North American populations produce higher proportions of (S)-(+)-ipsdienol. From a population in the hybrid zone, we divergently selected lines for the opposing pheromonal types and then created F1, F2, and backcross lines. We formed additional F1, F2, and backcross lines, first by using populations with low (+)-ipsdienol enantiomeric ratios near to and distant from the hybrid zone, and then by using populations with high (+)-ipsdienol enantiomeric ratios near to and distant from the hybrid zone. Three types of analysis were employed: (1) line means analysis; (2) Mendelian analysis of assigned high and low (+)-ipsdienol enantiomeric ratio phenotypes when applicable; and (3) Castle–Wright estimation of the number of effective factors. Dominance at one autosomal locus explains much of the variation in ipsdienol blend between the divergently selected lines. Thus, as in all previously studied female long-range pheromone systems, a major genetic element is implicated. The populations with low (+)-ipsdienol enantiomeric ratios near and distant to the hybrid zone differ negligibly for this trait. We confirmed previous studies showing slightly higher ratios of (+)-ipsdienol at the hybrid zone than in a distant eastern population and reveal a genetic basis for this difference.  相似文献
