In order to evaluate the magnitude and effect of phosphate (fluorapatite) rock particles on the distribution of fluoride in the Jordanian sector of the Gulf of Aqaba, sea water and sediment samples were collected from six stations north and south of Aqaba Port. The fluoride concentrations of the water and sediments were determined, together with the concentrations of calcium, calcium carbonate, total phosphorus, magnesium and organic matter in the sediments. Normal fluoride concentrations were found in the sea water samples, whereas abnormally high values were found in the phosphate-polluted sediments. These findings and the correlations between fluoride concentrations and those of other measured parameters are discussed.  相似文献

Heavy metal contents were investigated in different organ tissues of Red Pandora (Pagellus erythrinus) from the eastern Aegean Sea between May 1996 and July 1998. The concentrations of mercury in the muscle tissue ranged between 16 and 716, in liver 125-5451, in gonad 2.0-1858; cadmium in muscle nd-9.6, in liver 1.4-2245, in gonad nd-192; lead in muscle nd-1397, in liver 112-8311, in gonad nd-2927; zinc in muscle 1352-6693, in liver 2710-78705, in gonad 7273-168655; copper in muscle nd-383, in liver nd-21986, in gonad nd-20499 (microg/kg wet weight). The highest concentrations were generally found in the Southern Aegean Sea. All metal levels in muscle tissues are lower than the limits of European Dietary Standards and Guidelines. The metals ratios between liver and muscle indicated that the liver accumulated higher levels of metals than the muscle tissues. The bioaccumulation factor (BAFs) of metals was measured in muscle, liver and gonads. BAFs among the analysed elements showed the descending orders as Zn>Cu>Cd>Pb for muscle and gonads and Cd>Zn>Cu>Pb for liver.  相似文献

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are readily detected in biological samples at remote sites in the Arctic and sub-Arctic due to long-range transport from source areas. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of POPs, polybrominated contaminants and their metabolites in guillemot (Uria aalge) eggs from Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Norway and Sweden to assess spatial trends of these compounds in the Arctic and sub-Arctic areas of Europe. Egg samples were extracted, and cleaned for chemical analysis. Concentrations of PCBs, 4,4′-DDE and β-HCH were an order of magnitude higher in eggs from the Baltic Proper compared to eggs from the North Atlantic. Concentrations of HCB were of the same magnitude at all sites, ranging from 160 to 520 ng/g fat. Concentration of BCPS was 100 times higher in eggs from the Baltic compared to eggs from the North Atlantic and seems therefore to be special regional problem. Concentrations of PBDEs were lower in eggs from the North Atlantic compared to eggs from the Baltic Proper but the difference was not as large as for PCBs and 4,4′-DDE. HBCDD showed the same spatial trend as PCBs, where the concentrations in eggs from the Baltic Proper were an order of magnitude higher than in eggs from the North Atlantic. OH-PCB and MeSO2-PCB metabolites of PCBs, showed the same trend as the parent compounds while spatial trends of MeSO2-DDE and OH-PBDEs, metabolites of 4,4′-DDE and PBDEs, respectively, differed from the trend of the parent compounds. This may be due to two factors; firstly, the limited ability of birds to metabolise DDT, and secondly, to natural production of OH-PBDE, respectively. Guillemot is suggested as a monitoring species for circumpolar monitoring.  相似文献

The consolidation properties of clay samples from a marine environment were examined. Index, triaxial and odeometer tests were performed on the undisturbed/disturbed clay samples from 13 boreholes in the Gemlik Gulf (Bursa-Turkey). Laboratory tests indicated that the clays are soft and have a high moisture content and hence are highly compressible. The majority of the clays are unconsolidated due to the accretion rate being faster than the dissipation of pore water.  相似文献

Concentrations of 23 elements (Be, Al, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Rb, Sr, Mo, Pd, Cd, Sn, Pt, Pb) were evaluated in whole blood samples of live harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) from two different locations in the Wadden Sea, the Lorenzenplate in Germany, and the Danish island R?m?. Elemental blood levels were compared to data from literature of seals, other marine mammals and humans. While homeostatically controlled elements showed no differences, concentrations of As, Cr, Mn, Mo, Se, and V were higher than human levels. Furthermore, animals from both locations showed significant geographical differences in whole blood concentrations of Al, Mn, Cu, and Pt. These findings could be explained by differences in feeding areas. The element pattern was not affected by gender. In conclusion, these findings indicate an impact of the environment on biochemical blood parameters of the harbor seals. The significant differences of elements in blood samples of two groups of seals, which were associated with geographical variations of prey support the use of element pattern in blood as tool for investigation of environmental impact on seals.  相似文献

A study was conducted at Lake J?ms?nvesi in Central Finland, to identify the potential ecotoxicological risks of the remediation operation of a creosote-/PAH-contaminated lake sediment, made by capping during the years 1998-1999. Mussels (Anodonta anatina) were deployed to the lake at the same time as the remediation operation was started in November 1998. The contaminated area (0.5 ha) was covered by a filter geotextile (polypropylene), gravel and sand (1-1.5m) which were spread out on the ice and let to sink onto the bottom of the lake when the ice melted in May 1999. The possible impacts of capping to the adjacent environment were assessed from mussels exposed and particulate material settled (SPM) to collectors placed on the lake bottom. Mussel tissue, SPM, the water inside the collector were analyzed for polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAH)-compounds. Biological endpoints included body condition, glycogen and protein contents of adductor muscle. Mussels and SPM exposed downstream to the contaminated site (Site 3) contained the highest total PAH concentrations. Biota-sediment accumulation factors of acenaphthene, phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, pyrene and benzo(a)anthracene of mussels varied from 0.79 to 1.45. The glycogen and protein concentrations were lowest in adductor muscle from mussels exposed to conditions at Site 3. Concentrations of some PAH-compounds were found distinctly increased adjacent to the remediated area, possibly due to the agitation of contaminated sediment due to the capping. It is also possible that resuspension of sediment around remediated area (containing some PAHs) spread the deposited PAH-compounds.  相似文献

During the spring-summer period, vibrios were detected in water and mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) collected in 30 sampling sites located in the Mar Piccolo of Taranto (Ionian Sea, Italy). In order to evaluate the degree of microbial pollution of the investigated area, fecal coliforms and Escherichia coli densities were also determined. Vibrio alginolyticus constituted the predominant component of the total culturable vibrios. Some Vibrio species such as V. mediterranei, V. parahaemolyticus, V. diazotrophicus, V. nereis, and V. splendidus were present in water as well as in mussel samples; selective retention in mussels, however, was demonstrated for other vibrios (V. vulnificus, V. cincinnatiensis, V. orientalis, V. anguillarum, V. marinus, V. hollisae). The isolation of some potential pathogenic vibrio species shows the importance of Vibrio research to estimate water quality and to avoid transmission of infection to man and to other marine organisms.  相似文献

Large industrial energy consumers served at transmission voltage in the ERCOT market reduce their consumption up to 4% during intervals in which consumers are charged for transmission services. The response normally lasts two to three hours, since consumers do not know exactly which interval will set one of the four summer coincident peaks (CPs), which are the basis for transmission charges. Thus, the design of transmission prices in ERCOT has been successful in eliciting demand response from that market's largest industrial energy consumers. However, there is no noticeable response during some CPs, reflecting the difficulties in predicting the actual timing of the peak. The response by industrials served at primary voltage to the price signals is insignificant.  相似文献

This study estimated the human health risk associated with ingesting inorganic arsenic through consumption of farmed oysters in Taiwan. Two hundred fifty-four samples of oyster (Crassostrea gigas) were collected from four townships in southwest coastal areas, where 90% of Taiwan's oysters are produced. The concentrations of total arsenic and arsenic species including As(V), As(III), monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) were analyzed. The analytical results reveal that the ratio of mean concentration among the four townships of inorganic As to total concentration of As in oysters is approximately 1.64%. The mean concentrations of As(III) and As(V) in oysters from the four townships range from 0.071 to 0.145 microg/g, and 0.032 to 0.062 microg/g respectively. The estimated target cancer risks (TR), based on a 95% occurrence probability from ingesting inorganic As by consuming oysters at a rate of 18.6-56 g/day, range from 1.26 x 10(-5) to 3.82 x 10(-5). The probabilities of TR fell within the range 10(-6)-10(-4), suggesting that inorganic As uptake from farmed oysters is associated with a potential cancer risk. Moreover, a target hazard quotient (THQ) was used to evaluate the non-carcinogenic risk associated with ingesting inorganic As through oyster consumption at a rate of 18.6-56 g/day. The THQ values based on a 95% probability of exposure range from 0.071 to 0.214. All THQ values are below unity, indicating that farmed oyster consumption contributes only a little to the non-carcinogenic risk. Based on the estimation of the TR model, an ingestion rate of 1.6 g/day is recommended to meet the 95th percentile of carcinogenic risk, 10(-6), for exposure to inorganic As through the consumption of oysters in Taiwan.  相似文献

Although dietary intake studies have been carried out extensively in most developed countries, to evaluate the health risks of PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs, no data of this kind exists for Egypt. In this study, concentrations of PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs were measured using HRGC/HRMS in the most contributing foodstuffs (dairy products, fish/seafood, and meat) randomly collected from Ismailia city, Egypt. The dietary intake of PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs were subsequently determined, and compared with the most recent studies. To provide a primary estimation of the whole TEQ intake in Egypt if all the main food categories included, an estimation of the dietary intake (based on EU data) for some important and non-measured groups (cereals, vegetables/fruits, eggs and milk) was carried out. The calculated dietary intake based on the WHO assumption of 60 kg bw ranged from 3.69 to 4.0 pg WHO-TEQ/kg bw/day for PCDD/Fs and from, 6.04 to 6.68 pg WHO-TEQ/kg bw/day, if DL-PCBs were included. PCBs intake contributed about 40% of the total TEQ intake. Dairy products (mainly cheese) were the main contributor to the intake of PCDD/Fs (89%), while fish/seafood and meat have more or less the same percent share (5.4%). The dairy products contamination was the reason for our elevated dietary intake, as the content of PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs is several times higher than in all the developed countries. The total intake (PCDD/Fs+DL-PCBs) due to consumption of dairy products, fish/seafood and meat, is close to that reported in EU countries at the beginning of 1980s, but much higher than all those mentioned in all the recent reports, and higher than the maximum WHO TDI of 4 pg TEQ/kg bw/day. A recalculation of the dietary intake to include not only our measured data but also the data for the non-measured groups, yielded a total intake in the range of 4.06-6.38 pg TEQ/kg bw/day for PCDD/Fs and a range of 6.59-9.98 pg TEQ/kg bw/day for total including PCBs. Results show that cereals and vegetables/fruits contribute significantly to PCDD/Fs TEQ intake in Egypt and play a more important role than fish/seafood and meat. This is the case even though the intake for cereals and vegetables/fruits based on EU data.  相似文献

Landslides are among the most important and frequent natural calamities that cause severe socio-economic and human losses. After earthquakes, landslides are responsible for the greatest number of casualties and the largest amount of damage to man-made structures. On average, southern Italy is affected by a high spatial density of landslides due to its complex geological setting, which often predisposes it to slope instability phenomena under both natural and anthropogenic influences. Structurally complex formations are widespread in the southern Apennines and are characterized by high heterogeneity and very poor mechanical properties. Thus, these formations represent one of the main factors contributing to the predisposition of slopes to landsliding. In this paper, landslide-induced damage was investigated and analyzed in an area within the municipality of Agnone (Molise region), which is affected by a complex landslide that involves a structurally complex formation. The approaches used were based on six different methods that have previously been described in the literature, and a comparison of the results was made. Data regarding the damage, which consists largely of cracks observed in buildings and at the ground, were compiled through field surveys. The results were critically analyzed to note the advantages and constraints of each classification scheme. The aim of the work was to apply and compare different approaches in order to test the best and most accurate procedures for assessing damage due to landslides at the scale of individual buildings as well as to provide an objective assessment of the degree of landslide damage to structures and facilities.

Atmospheric deposition of different types of aerosols over the southern East Sea has received little attention in terms of seawater biogeochemistry. We investigated the concentrations of water-soluble ions (NO3, NH4+ and nss-SO42−) in the aerosols associated with air mass transport patterns arriving at the east coast of Korea, adjacent to the southern East Sea, in order to determine source regions affecting chemical composition of aerosols and to assess the atmospheric pathway as a significant controlling mechanism of the biogeochemistry in this marginal sea. Concentrations of certain elements (Al, Na, Ca, V, Zn and Pb) together with the water-soluble ions were measured in the aerosol samples (n = 34) collected during the period March 2002-February 2003. The geometric mean concentrations of the water-soluble ions were NO3 2.98 (0.56-16.22), NH4+ 1.42 (0.37-6.73) and nss-SO42− 2.47 (0.17-17.35) μg m− 3. The backward trajectories revealed that air masses passing slowly over eastern China contributed more to increases in the concentrations of water-soluble ions than those associated with fast-moving northwesterly and maritime winds. Therefore, the correlation between the NH4+ and NO3+ concentrations increased, suggesting that gas-phase NH3 and HNO3 was forming fine-mode NH4NO3. The atmospheric N input accounted for ∼ 10% of new production over the southern East Sea on an annual scale, while it accounted for over ∼ 25% of new production during the water column stratification seasons (summer and early fall).  相似文献

The non-essential elements, arsenic, cadmium, mercury and lead, inevitably accumulate in marine top predators such as seals. The concentration of these elements and the essential element selenium, due to its proposed protective properties against mercury toxicity in marine mammals, were measured in muscle, liver and kidney from reproductive active females of harp seal (Phagophilus groenlandicus) and hooded seal (Cystophora cristata) caught in the drift ice between Iceland and East Greenland. Arsenic levels were below 1 microg/g w.w. in all analysed samples, and were therefore low compared to other seafood products. The concentrations of arsenic found in the present study were comparable to the results reported in a similar study from 1985. Mean concentrations of total mercury in muscle from the present study were higher than levels in other seafood products. The levels of total mercury from the present study showed a tendency of lower levels in all tissue samples compared to the study from 1985. Methyl mercury displayed a trend of a lower ratio of methyl mercury to total mercury as the concentration of total mercury increased, indicating a demethylation of methyl mercury at high total mercury concentrations (e.g. mercury in liver of hooded seal). The concentration ratio of methyl mercury to total mercury in muscle samples was more than 75%, with total mercury concentration less than 0.5 microg/g w.w., whereas the ratio for liver was as low as 0.2% with a total mercury concentration of 128 microg/g w.w. The molar concentration ratios of selenium to mercury showed that selenium was present in a molar surplus to mercury in all tissues with low mercury concentration. However, there seemed to be a general mobilisation of selenium in liver and kidney tissues of harp seal and hooded seal, whereas an extraordinary mobilisation seemed to take place at hepatic mercury concentrations exceeding 50 microg/g w.w. The mean concentrations of lead in muscles in the present study were higher than in fish and other seafood products from the Barents Sea. The lead concentrations from the present study were lower than levels reported in the 1985 study. However, the levels of the non-essential elements analysed in muscle from the two seal species in the present study should not prevent the use of seal meat in human nutrition.  相似文献

A systematic investigation evaluated the concentrations of a selected number of trace elements (Cd, Co, Cu, Li, Ni, Pb, V and Zn) in carbonates of the benthic foraminifera Ammonia tepida collected from surface sediments of the highly polluted harbour of Naples. Application of cleaning procedures, combined with Scanning Electron Microscopy investigation (SEM) of the analysed shells allowed reliable quantification of the elements in the carbonate lattice. Adoption of biogenic carbonate/seawater distribution coefficients reported in the literature provided the ranges of variability of total dissolved trace elements in the studied marine environment. Very high concentrations of Zn, Cd, and Cu calculated in seawater (from 100 to 10,000 times higher than those reported for uncontaminated Mediterranean seawaters) testify to intense effects of anthropogenic impact on the harbour mainly related to the industrial and commercial activities carried out in the neighbouring area. The ensemble of the obtained results emphasizes the high potential of measurements of trace elements in the biogenic carbonates of benthic foraminifera as tracers of anthopogenic pollution of seawater and reliable proxies of potentially bioavailable forms (as free ions and/or more labile organic complexes) of seawater dissolved metals.  相似文献

EU policy for the conservation of cultural landscapes is of particular importance for a region such as Sicily (Italy) which is the site of many Mediterranean traditional cultural landscapes as well as new landscapes created by contemporary agriculture. Such variety of landscape, however, is not supported or confirmed by specialised inventories that identify and classify the typical Main Traditional Landscape (MTL). On the basis of these considerations, the objective of the present paper is to draw up a preliminary inventory and present a brief characterisation of MTLs in Sicily, in line with the multidisciplinary experiences and approaches implemented at European and national levels. In defining the typological units, the terminology used to identify Sicilian MTLs was modified by experiences developed on the mainland, with entries such as: bocage/semi-bocage, coltura promiscua, Mediterranean open field, mountain landscape, huerta and terrace landscape. Using different spatialised data layers, including those concerned with the main historical processes of land use and land use change, a total of eight MTLs have been detected, mapped, and concisely described. The distribution and importance of terracing systems within the different MTLs is highlighted as one of the most relevant traditional elements in the rural scenario.  相似文献

Cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), arsenic (As), lead (Pb) and tin (Sn) concentrations were determined using ICP-MS in soft tissues (wet wt.) from whole greenshell mussels (Perna canaliculus) collected from Urapukapuka-Rawhiti Island, Opua Marina, Waitangi Bridge and Opua Wharf from the Bay of Islands, northern New Zealand (NZ). All samples had metal concentrations well below the Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) maximum limits and were comparable to, or less than, concentrations observed in previous NZ studies. Based on the average values detected in the current study, the concentrations of heavy metals ingested in a ‘typical diet’ containing greenshell mussels are below the provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI). However, Māori (indigenous people of New Zealand), Pacific Islanders and Asians consume a far greater quantity of seafood (and therefore heavy metals) than the general public of New Zealand and could potentially consume enough shellfish to exceed the PTWI for Cd (but not for Hg, As, Pb or Sn). Although our results, based on the current PTWIs, indicate no significant health risk to greenshell mussel consumers in this region, PTWIs change over time; concentrations which were thought to be safe are later found to be harmful. Additionally, differences in individual human susceptibilities to various toxins could increase the risk of harm for consumers with low tolerance to heavy metals. We suggest that a survey of the frequency, amount and species consumed by groups whose diet may be largely shellfish-based is required to enable a more comprehensive risk assessment to be made.  相似文献

A proposal to construct a dam on the river Mahadayi (Mandovi) for power generation would change the hydrodynamics of the estuarine stretch of the river. Using DYNHYD, the hydrodynamic model of WASP developed by the USEPA, several space and time dependent parameters were estimated in the stretch of approximately 80 km from the mouth of the river close to Panaji City up to the village of Sonali. The model was calibrated through the observed and predicted salinity values at various segments for summer and monsoon flows in the river. The channel flow variations in the river and estuarine zone, as well as flow velocities, effect on salinity have been predicted for pre‐ and post‐project scenarios. The natural variation in the river flow during a year was from 1.3 cum/s to 824 cum/ s. In the post project scenario, the variation ranged from 18.3 cum/s to 724 cum/s, respectively. The results indicated that predicted impact of salinity changes in the estuarine portion of the river Mandovi will be marginal. A stretch of about 12.5 km from Usgaon Pali village to Amone village may change from mesohaline to oligohaline during summer due to the construction of the dam.  相似文献

Buchanan et al. assert that our recent fish ingestion risk assessment for a section of the Lower Passaic River (LPR) (Urban et al., 2009) utilizes inappropriate ingestion rates and is inconsistent with state and USEPA guidelines and risk assessment procedures, and therefore underestimates the human health risks associated with angler exposure along this stretch of the river. However, they fail to support these assertions with evidence; indeed, in a recent response to similar allegations, we demonstrated that the utilized ingestion rates are, in fact, the most appropriate for this parameter (Urban et al., 2010). Our reliance on data from a comprehensive, independently validated, peer-reviewed, and site-specific creel angler survey (CAS) in order to define fish and crab ingestion rates for this region of the LPR is fully compliant with USEPA guidelines. In fact, the crab ingestion survey and risk assessment cited by Buchanan et al. as evidence of crabbing activity and crab ingestion for this region was less comprehensive than the CAS in question, was not overseen by an independent panel, has yet to be peer-reviewed, and does not provide any activity or consumption data for this section of the LPR. Contrary to the implications of Buchanan et al., our effort provides a transparent, comprehensive, and scientifically legitimate human health risk assessment of fish ingestion for the lowest 6 miles of the LPR. Thus we adamantly disagree with the characterization and assertions put forth by Buchanan et al., and stand by the conclusions presented in Urban et al. (2009) and defended in Urban et al. Mugdan et al. have criticized certain aspects of the approach and general conclusions of our recently published fish ingestion risk assessment for the lower Passaic River (Urban et al., 2009), asserting that they are inconsistent with the United States Environmental Protection Agency's risk assessment guidelines we reference in our paper. Specifically, they assert that the excess cancer risk and health hazard results calculated as a part of our analyses underestimate the potential health risk posed to lower Passaic River anglers who actually consume their catch due to the fish ingestion rates we utilized in our analysis and our lack of inclusion of a crab ingestion pathway. While there clearly are differences between our risk assessment and the one conducted by the USEPA, this is not at all surprising given that their assessment reflects a typical screening-level risk assessment while that described in our paper reflects a more detailed site-specific risk assessment. In developing our exposure scenarios and assumptions, we considered and incorporated the available site-specific information in both deterministic and probabilistic quantitative risk frameworks in an effort to provide a sound and realistic human health risk assessment that quantitatively accounts for much of the variability and uncertainty typically inherent in such estimates. Although it is understandable that Mugdan et al. are compelled to defend the effort and conclusions put forth by USEPA Region 2 in its 2007 draft human health risk assessment of the lower Passaic River, the site-specific lower Passaic River human health risk assessment presented in Urban et al. (2009) was conducted according to USEPA guidelines, underwent peer review, and is, in fact, consistent with Superfund guidance and accepted principles of risk assessment.  相似文献

Urban et al. (2009) presented a human health risk assessment for the Lower Passaic River that is not consistent with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) risk assessment guidance for Superfund cited in the article, because it is based on a fish ingestion rate that underestimates angler exposure to contaminated fish, does not evaluate exposure to contaminated crab, and underestimates the cancer risks and non-cancer health hazards associated with these exposure pathways.
