Mill process changes and source controls instituted in the late 1980s at pulp and paper mills along the British Columbia (BC) coast produced dramatic reductions in both the concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and the TEQ (2,3,7,8-TCDD toxic equivalents). Nevertheless, questions remained as to whether the sediments were acting as contaminant sources or sinks, whether crab uptake pathways have stayed the same since the mills ceased producing PCDD/Fs, and whether improvement was faster at some sites than others. To examine the processes governing the changes in PCDD/F composition, PCDD/F sources and compositional trends for the coastal BC sites were interpreted using sediment and crab PCA (principal components analysis) models and two indices based on the three main groups of PCDD/Fs that covary in all PCA models. One index measured the relative inputs of chlorine bleaching PCDFs and PCP (pentachlorophenol)-related PCDDs at each mill and harbor site whereas the other measured the relative inputs of PCP wood preservatives and pulp mill effluents. Results indicated that PCDFs produced during chlorine bleaching accumulate from sediments to crabs more readily than the PCDDs but that the chlorine bleaching TCDFs have generally decreased in importance at all mill sites. In the years just before 1995, little change was observed in either the proportion of toxic 2,3,7,8-chlorinated congeners or the PCDD/F concentrations, and the improvements seemed to have largely ceased by 1995. The lack of change in PCA composition for the harbors provided a further, disturbing indication that ecosystem recovery may have stalled. Results also implied that the main route of PCDD/Fs into crabs shifted from uptake via a pelagic food web incorporating effluent-borne PCDD/Fs associated with suspended particulate matter to uptake via a benthic food web.  相似文献

Web technology is one of the key areas in information and communication technology to be used as a powerful tool in ensuring food security which is one of the main issues in Sri Lanka. Web technology involves in communicating and sharing resources in network of computers all over the world. Main focus of food security is to ensure that all people have fair access to sufficient and quality food without endangering the future supply of the same food. In this context, web sites play a vital and major role in achieving food security in Sri Lanka. In this case study, websites pertaining to Sri Lankan government and link with food security were analyzed to find out their impact in achieving the goals of food security using web technologies and how they are being involved in ensuring food security in Sri Lanka. The other objective of this study is to make the Sri Lankan government aware of present situation of those websites in addressing food security related issues and how modern web technologies could be effectively and efficiently used to address those issues. So, the relevant websites were checked against several criteria and scores were used to assess their capabilities to address the concerns of food security. It was found that the amount of emphasis given by these websites to address the issues of food security is not satisfactory. Further, it showed that if these web sites could be improved further, they would generate a powerful impact on ensuring food security in Sri Lanka.  相似文献

目的:调查网络媒体中婴幼儿纯母乳喂养的信息,并对其科学性进行分析评价。方法:以“纯母乳喂养”和“辅食添加时间”为关键词,使用“Google”检索,每个关键词分别分析搜索前100条信息。结果:200条信息中157条信息来自网站,43条信息来自个人网页。网站信息纯母乳喂养时间正确率为40.76%。政府和专业机构网站的信息有出处者多,有出处的信息正确率高(P〈0.05)。搜索网站首页信息与抽样的全部搜索信息的正确率相近(P〉0.05),个人网页信息与网站信息的正确率无显著差别(P〉0.05)。结论:过半数的网站未能给出纯母乳喂养的正确答案,多数信息受者的认识也不正确。  相似文献

This paper aims to give an overview of how molecular biology relates to grapevine research and viticulture. In it we explain some basic premises and techniques of molecular biology with the aim of introducing a wider readership to this rapidly developing field. Current and potential uses of molecular biology for research and practical viticulture are presented. These include molecular cloning, analysis of gene expression, grapevine transformation, marker-assisted breeding, cultivar identification and pest and disease diagnostics.
