In a laboratory simulation of the activated sludge process ten heavy metals were added continuously to the system which was allowed to equilibrate at six sludge ages between 3 and 18d. Cobalt, manganese and molybdenum removals were poor and were unaffected by changes in the sludge age. The highest removal efficiencies for the other metals occurred at the 15d sludge age. Chromium (trivalent) and cadmium had the highest removal efficiencies, typically greater than 50%. The behaviour of the majority of the metals which were removed to a significant extent was related to one of the parameters influenced by sludge age, i.e. mixed liquor suspended solids, effluent suspended solids or effluent chemical oxygen demand. The metals which were poorly removed showed little affinity for the activated sludge, while most metals exhibited maximum specific uptake by the mixed liquor at a sludge age of 9–12d. However, the affinity of silver for the mixed liquor continued to increase as the sludge age increased to 18d. An affinity series, based on an arbitrary measure of the specific accumulation of metals by the mixed liquor, indicated that chromium, cadmium and silver were most readily adsorbed by the activated sludge. 相似文献

Advanced sewage treatment process with excess sludge reduction and phosphorus recovery 总被引:33,自引:0,他引:33
An advanced sewage treatment process has been developed, in which excess sludge reduction by ozonation and phosphorus recovery by crystallization process are incorporated to a conventional anaerobic/oxic (A/O) phosphorus removal process. The mathematical model was developed to describe the mass balance principal at a steady state of this process. Sludge ozonation experiments were carried out to investigate solubilization characteristics of sludge and change in microbial activity by using sludge cultured with feed of synthetic sewage under A/O process. Phosphorus was solubilized by ozonation as well as organics, and acid-hydrolyzable phosphorus (AHP) was the most part of solubilized phosphorus for phosphorus accumulating organisms (PAOs) containing sludge. At solubilization of 30%, around 70% of sludge was inactivated by ozonation. The results based on these studies indicated that the proposed process configuration has potential to reduce the excess sludge production as well as to recover phosphorus in usable forms. The system performance results show that this system is practical, in which 30% of solubilization degree was achieved by ozonation. In this study, 30% of solubilization was achieved at 30 mgO(3)/gSS of ozone consumption. 相似文献

Mercury removal from water using activated carbons derived from organic sewage sludge 总被引:16,自引:0,他引:16
Various types of activated carbons were developed from organic sewage sludge (SS) using H(2)SO(4), H(3)PO(4) and ZnCl(2) as chemical activation reagents, and the removal of Hg(II) from aqueous solution by these carbons was effectively demonstrated. The quality of the activated carbons was dramatically improved owing to chemical activation. ZnCl(2) activated carbon had the highest capability for Hg(II) adsorption, followed by H(3)PO(4) and H(2)SO(4) activated carbons. The adsorption was greatly affected by Hg(II) concentration, solution pH and carbon dosage, and followed Lagergren first order rate equation and Freundlich isotherm model. Desorption results indicated that around 60% to 80% of the adsorbed Hg(II) could be recovered from the carbons to 0.1 M HNO(3) solution by sonication treatment. Accordingly, it is believed that the activated carbons developed in this study are effective and practical for utilization in industrial wastewater treatment for mercury removal. 相似文献

Re-use of water treatment works sludge to enhance particulate pollutant removal from sewage 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This paper attempted to study the feasibility of reusing water treatment works sludge ("alum sludge") to improve particulate pollutant removal from sewage. The main issues focused upon were: (1) the appropriate dosage of the alum sludge, (2) the appropriate operating conditions, and (3) the possible mechanisms for enhancement by adding alum sludge. Actual alum sludge and sewage were applied to a series of jar tests conducted under various conditions. It has been found that both the SS and COD removal efficiencies could be improved by the addition of the alum sludge, which was mainly attributed to the removal of relatively fine particles with a size of 48-200 microm. The appropriate dosage of the alum sludge was determined to be 18-20 mg of Al/L. Increasing the mixing speed or reducing the floc size of the alum sludge enhanced the SS and COD removal and the dispersed alum sludge could remove particulate contaminants with smaller size than the raw sewage. ToF-SIMS evidence revealed that the aluminum species at the surface of the alum sludge were effectively utilized for improving the SS and COD removal. It was postulated that the sweep flocculation and/or the physical adsorption might play key roles in the enhancement of particulate pollutant removal from sewage. 相似文献

Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) uptake of the elements, Cd, Ni, Pb, Cu, Zn and Mn, from a sewage sludge-amended Mecklenburg soil was conducted in the greenhouse. “Bragg” soybeans were grown in pots for five weeks at which time the tops and roots were sampled separately for elemental analysis. Soil samples from each pot were extracted with DTPA (diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid) and the concentration of extractable elements correlated with the elemental content in the soybean plant. There was a significant increase in dry matter production with sludge treatment. Concentrations of Cd, Ni and Pb in the soybean shoots and roots increased from sludge-amended soil as compared to the control. The metal concentration in the soybean tissue increased with increasing levels of sludge amendment. Uptake of the heavy metals was greater by the roots than by the shoots indicating some barrier to movement of the metals from roots to shoots. The DTPA extractable Cd in sludge-amended soil increased significantly, and showed correlation to the soybean tissue metal concentrations. As for the micronutrients, Cu increased in the soybean shoot as the extractable Cu increased. There was no significant relationship between soybean tissue Zn and Mn and extractable Zn and Mn. 相似文献

Viruses seeded into a 50,000 gal day−1 three-stage activated sludge pilot plant were effectively reduced in the treatment process. Reduction was highest in the system's denitrification and high-rate activated sludge modules, both averaging more than 95% virus removal. Combining the removal capacity of each unit process resulted in a calculated virus reduction of 99.97% for the total treatment system.A study of the indigenous viruses present after primary settling illustrated the wide diversions that can occur in wastewaters during a 24 h period. It illustrated as well the necessity of collecting temporally related samples within the treatment system. No direct relationship was evident between the numbers of coliphages and enteroviruses present in the primary effluent. 相似文献

The aim of the present study was to evaluate to what degree polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) determines sewage sludge toxicity in relation to Heterocypris incongruens. Six differing sewage sludges with increasing contents of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were selected for the present study. As well as total PAH content, the content of the potentially bioavailable fraction was also determined in the sewage sludges using a method of mild-solvent extraction (with n-butanol). The PAH content was also calculated in the sewage sludge pore water by the equilibrium partitioning method. The total PAH content in the sewage sludges studied were in the range 3.60 to 27.95 mg kg(-1). The contribution of the n-butanol extracted fraction was in the range 38.7 to 75.4%. In the group of individual PAHs, 4- and 5-ring compounds had the highest content in the potentially bioavailable group. H. incongruens mortality in the range 6.7 to 100%, depending both on the sewage sludge and the dose applied. An increase of the sewage sludge dose usually resulted in an increase in toxicity. At the highest dose, a 100% mortality of H. incongruens was found in half of the sludges. The lowest dose, irrespective of the sludge type, caused over 40% growth inhibition. However, the results obtained did not allow for the establishing of an unambiguous relationship between various sludge toxicity levels and the content of potentially bio-available PAHs. In some cases only, the extraction using n-butanol explained the high difference in toxicity despite a slight differentiation in the PAH content. 相似文献

During 8 sampling campaigns carried out over a period of two years, 72 samples, including influent and effluent wastewater, and sludge samples from three conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), were analyzed to assess the occurrence and fate of 43 pharmaceutical compounds. The selected pharmaceuticals belong to different therapeutic classes, i.e. non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, lipid modifying agents (fibrates and statins), psychiatric drugs (benzodiazepine derivative drugs and antiepileptics), histamine H2-receptor antagonists, antibacterials for systemic use, beta blocking agents, beta-agonists, diuretics, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and anti-diabetics. The obtained results showed the presence of 32 target compounds in wastewater influent and 29 in effluent, in concentrations ranging from low ng/L to a few μg/L (e.g. NSAIDs). The analysis of sludge samples showed that 21 pharmaceuticals accumulated in sewage sludge from all three WWTPs in concentrations up to 100 ng/g. This indicates that even good removal rates obtained in aqueous phase (i.e. comparison of influent and effluent wastewater concentrations) do not imply degradation to the same extent. For this reason, the overall removal was estimated as a sum of all the losses of a parent compound produces by different mechanisms of chemical and physical transformation, biodegradation and sorption to solid matter. The target compounds showed very different removal rates and no logical pattern in behaviour even if they belong to the same therapeutic groups. What is clear is that the elimination of most of the substances is incomplete and improvements of the wastewater treatment and subsequent treatments of the produced sludge are required to prevent the introduction of these micro-pollutants in the environment. 相似文献

This paper describes a new method for pyrolyzing sewage sludge using a microwave furnace. It was found that if just the raw wet sludge is treated in the microwave, only drying of the sample takes place. However, if the sludge is mixed with a small amount of a suitable microwave absorber (such as the char produced in the pyrolysis itself) temperatures of up to 900 degrees C can be achieved, so that pyrolysis takes place rather than drying. Microwave treatments were also compared with those carried out in a conventional electric furnace, as well as the characteristics of their respective carbonaceous solid residues. 相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted over a 12 week period to follow the decomposition of sewage sludge in seawater and in sediment-seawater mixtures under aerobic and anaerobic conditions at 4° and 21°C. Results showed that the sewage sludge decomposed more rapidly in the presence of oxygen. Dissolved organic carbon, a major carbon source in sewage sludge, abruptly decreased to very low concentrations in 3–4 weeks in aerobic systems; concentrations of particulate carbon decreased only gradually during the 12 week period. Aerobic conditions at the sewage sludge dump site in the New York Bight apex can promote rapid decomposition of sewage sludge if it is distributed evenly over an area of at least 5.2 km2 (2 miles). 相似文献

In this paper we propose a method for chemical-free removal of metal from lake sediment, and its subsequent pH adjustment, based on electrochemical migration and precipitation. Such a method would enable the utilization of sediment as composting material. Sediment was placed in the anode side of a dual-bath electrochemical reactor separated by a thimble-shape cellulose filter from the cathode side, which was filled with pure water. When voltage was applied, contaminant metals in the sediment on the anode side migrated toward the cathode side, and precipitated due to the alkaline conditions caused by the cathodic reaction. After 10 days of electrolysis with 400 mA of constant current of 150 g wet lake sediment, the removal ratios of 13 kinds of elements after the electrochemical treatment were measured. Cd and Zn, the elements for which agricultural standards apply, showed 98% and 86% removal, respectively. The type of metal removed changed over time, and the order of removal was roughly from light metals to heavy metals. The acidified lake sediment after electrolysis could be neutralized without significant recontamination with Zn and Cd by using the alkaline cathode solution collected during electrolysis under a condition of tap water overflow at a rate of 1.5 L/h. The electrochemical metal removal method was effective not only for lake sediment, but also for municipal sludge cake, human sewage, and contaminated scallop organs. The total and dissolved concentration of cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel and zinc at various points in a conventional activated sludge treatment plant have been measured. The analysis of raw sewage samples collected hourly over a 3-day period showed that metal input to the sewage treatment plant was not a continuous process but consisted of slugs of metal lasting for a discrete time. The efficiency of heavy metal removal by this model treatment plant was determined by monitoring the influent and effluent metal levels over a 4-week period. 相似文献

Metallic teapots traditionally used in Morocco were investigated for release of toxic metals from the teapots and their toxicity, as determined by MetPAD, a bacterial toxicity test that is specific for heavy metal toxicity. Our data show that some teapots were non-toxic while a few others were highly toxic, as shown by MetPAD. Tea addition reduced somewhat heavy metal toxicity due possibly to the complexing ability of tea. Chemical analysis of teapot leachates showed that some contained zinc and copper. Teapot No. 5, which showed the highest toxicity, also displayed the highest Zn concentration (7.39 mg/l), confirming the toxicity data. Based on estimates of tea consumption in Morocco, we showed that the extra daily burden of Zn ranged from 1.75 to 4.2 mg/day, assuming the maximum zinc concentration of 7.4 mg/l, as found in our study. This represents 3.5-8% of the LOAEL for zinc of 50 mg/day and would not be important as compared to other sources zinc intake. 相似文献

An ATP luminescence method was used to determine the toxicity of three reference toxicants to two sources of domestic activated sludge, and an activated sludge from a laboratory model plant. Repeatability in the ATP test was demonstrated for Cr (as K2Cr2O7), Zn (as ZnSO4 x 7H2O), and 3,5-dichlorophenol (3,5-DCP) using each source of activated sludge. The three sources of sludge showed sensitivity to Cr and 3,5-DCP, and insensitivity to Zn using the ATP luminescence method. Sludge source did not appear to effect test response. The toxic response to 3,5-DCP in model and domestic activated sludge was shown to be dependent on sludge solid concentration (measured as total suspended solids, gTSS(-1). It is recommended that a standard solids concentration is used during toxicity evaluation. 相似文献

The article focuses on the effect of microwave treatment on the de-waterability of sewage sludge. The specific resistance to filtration, capillary suction time, and dry matter content in centrifuged sludge cake were measured. The quality of sludge liquor obtained after microwave processing was also analysed. It was found out that microwaves improve sludge de-waterability. The quantitative improvement depends on sludge type-better effect of microwave processing were observed in the primary sludge compared to mixed or digested sludges. If microwave treatment is followed by polyelectrolyte conditioning, the effects are considerably better than while these conditioning methods are used separately. Microwave conditioning increased burden of organic matter (BOD(5), COD) in the sludge liquor. 相似文献
