The exploration for a geothermal resource on Ascension Island utilized a strategy that initially employed geologic mapping. On the basis of this, subsurface faults were mapped using an aeromagnetic survey. The faults were then explored using electrical resistivity surveys to define areas of potential hydrothermal fluid up-welling. The results of all of these techniques were used to site temperature gradient holes. A deep geothermal exploration well was then drilled in the area with highest heat flow adjacent to a rhyolite-to-trachyte volcanic complex.  相似文献

A detailed aeromagnetic survey of Ascension Island, which was completed in February and March of 1983 as part of an evaluation of the geothermal potential of the island, is described. The aeromagnetic map represents a basic data set useful for the interpretation of subsurface geology. An in situ magnetic susceptibility survey was also carried out to assist in understanding the magnetic properties of Ascension rocks and to aid in the interpretation of the aeromagnetic data. The aeromagnetic survey was interpreted using a three-dimensional numerical modeling program that computes the net magnetic field of a large number of vertically sided prisms. Multiple source bodies of complex geometry were modeled and modified until a general agreement was achieved between the observed data and the computed results. The interpretation indicates northeast- and east-trending elongate bodies of much higher apparent susceptibility than adjacent rocks. The relationship to mapped geologic features such as volcanic vents, dikes and faults suggests that these magnetic sources are zones of increased dike density and of other mafic intrusives emplaced along structures that fed the many volcanic centers. A large magnetic source on the northeastern portion of the island may be the intrusive equivalent of trachyte lavas present at the surface. A low-magnetization area, mainly north and west of Green Mountain, appears to be the most likely area for the presence of a geothermal system at moderate (1–3 km) depth.  相似文献

The accurate imaging of geothermal systems from the ground surface down to great depths is an interdisciplinary problem common to geothermal resource exploration and development. Rocks can be characterized mainly in terms of their lithology, mineralogy, fracture distribution, permeability, thermal conductivity and porosity, and similarly the geothermal fluid (and its circulation) by its geochemistry, flow pattern, velocity, temperature and pressure. Some of these data are obtained by well logging and from laboratory tests conducted on drillhole cores. In general, the distribution of geothermal wells is not random, and well data are limited in terms of quantity and depth range. Accordingly, a sophisticated spatial modeling technique is indispensable in the three-dimensional imaging of geothermal systems. We describe a versatile 3-D modeling method that can be used to determine the temperature, flow velocity, and distribution of geological units within a geothermal field based on well log data. The model results for the Hohi geothermal area, Japan, provide plausible estimates of temperature, flow velocity, and geology to a depth of 3000 m. Superimposition of the three spatial models we obtained shows that, at Hohi, two geothermal reservoirs are localized near highly fractured fault zones that provide paths for the ascent of thermal fluids from depth.  相似文献

Interest in geothermal energy originated in Iran when James R. McNitt, a United Nations geothermal expert, visited the country in December 1974. In 1975, a contract among the Ministry of Energy, ENEL (Entes Nazionale per L’Energia Elettrica) of Italy and TB (Tehran Berkeley) of Iran was signed for geothermal exploration in the north-western part of Iran. In 1983, the result of investigations defined Sabalan, Damavand, Khoy-Maku and Sahand regions as four prospected geothermal sites in north-western Iran. From 1996 to 1999, a countrywide geothermal energy resource exploration project was carried out by Renewable Energy Organization of Iran (SUNA) and 10 more potential areas were indicated additionally.Geothermal potential site selection using Geographic Information System (GIS) was carried out in Kyushu University in 2007. The results indicated 8.8% of Iran as prospected geothermal areas in 18 fields.Sabalan as a first priority of geothermal potential regions was selected for detailed explorations. Since 1995, surface exploration and feasibility studies have been carried out and five promising areas were defined. Among those prospective areas, Northwest Sabalan geothermal filed was defined for detailed exploration to justify exploration drilling and to estimate the reservoir characteristics and capacity. From 2002 to 2004, three deep exploration wells were drilled for evaluation of subsurface geological conditions, geothermal reservoir assessment and response simulation. Two of the wells were successful and a maximum temperature of 240 °C at a depth of 3197 m was recorded. As a result of the reservoir simulation, a 55-MW power plant is projected to be installed in the Sabalan field as a first in geothermal power generation. To supply the required steam for the geothermal power plant (GPP) 17 deep production and reinjection wells are planned to be drilled this year.  相似文献

The Chingshui geothermal power plant was decommissioned in 1993 due to a continued decline in production. Although some geothermal exploration and field investigation had been exercised, the production potential of the reservoir is still not well understood. In this paper, numerical modeling approaches for characterization of the geothermal reservoir, investigation of reservoir production performance, and evaluation of exploitation scheme design are presented. At first, a site-scale refined grid numerical model was developed for simulating the natural state of Chingshui geothermal reservoir. Through the model, the production potential of the geothermal reservoir was estimated and the availability of water resources was assessed. We further built production model to simulate the production history during 1981–1993. From the production model, we can conclude that the abnormal drop of the reservoir production capacity is mainly caused by carbonate scaling. Potential production schemes with different reinjection designs were evaluated through the model. Simulation results indicated that a sustainable hot water production capacity of Chingshui geothermal reservoir is about 200 t/h without reinjection, and 300 t/h or even higher with reinjection which is enough for a 3 MWe power plant. The simulation results indicate that reinjection provides an effective approach for maintaining reservoir pressure during hot water/steam production.  相似文献

The impact of geothermal fluid discharges during the testing of Pataan 5-D well was evaluated on seedlings of mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King) at various distances from the well and on natural forest vegetation around the wellpad. The parameters measured were: (1) geothermal brine spray concentration; (2) plant concentration of geothermal signature ions (B, Cl, Li and Na); (3) symptoms of plant damage; and (4) plant recovery. Meteorological parameters were also gathered. Adverse effects on the test plants were observed at distances of 5–50 m from the well silencer for over-spray during the horizontal discharge and at 50–350 m from the wellhead during the vertical discharge. Salinity was identified as a significant cause of plant damage. Observed symptoms of damage included drying of leaf tissues expressed as necrotic areas, which occurred first at the tip of older leaves and progressed along the margins as severity increased, resulting in abnormal defoliation. Recovery of seedlings and natural vegetation from sprays was observed in both vertical and horizontal discharges.  相似文献

Chena Hot Springs is a small, moderate temperature, deep circulating geothermal system, apparently typical of those associated to hot springs of interior Alaska. Multi-stage drilling was used in some exploration boreholes and was found to be useful for understanding subsurface flow characteristics and developing a conceptual model of the system. The results illustrate how temperature profiles illuminate varying pressure versus depth characteristics and can be used alone in cases where staged drilling is not practical. The extensive exploration activities helped define optimal fluid production and injection areas, and showed that the system could provide sufficient hot fluids (∼57 °C) to run a 400-kWe binary power plant, which came on line in 2006.  相似文献

San Kampaeng and Fang geothermal areas are considered areas of interest for the exploitation of geothermal energy. The technologies of exploration and development have been studied by Thai scientists and engineers during the past four years. The first geothermal deep exploration well was drilled, in cooperation with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), in the San Kampaeng geothermal area. In 1985, supplementary work is planned to define the deep structural setting in greater detail before starting to drill the next deep exploration well. In Fang geothermal area some shallow exploitation wells have been drilled to obtain fluid to feed a demonstration binary system of 120 kWe, with the technical cooperation of BRGM and GEOWATT, France. The plant will be installed next fiscal year.  相似文献

Earthquake activity in the vicinity of Ascension Island is studied using data from a recently installed, very broadband seismographic station and a network of ocean hydrophones deployed around the island. The seismic station ASCN recorded 121 local earthquakes over a 188-day period. Distance from ASCN is computed for 41 of these events, most of which occurred at approximately 100 km—the distance to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. A local magnitude scale is calibrated and applied to the same 41 events with mahnitudes ranging from 0.4 to 4.2. Six earthquakes were located using data from the hydrophones and ASCN. Two of the earthquakes occur on the Ascension Fracture Zone 35 km northwest of the island and the other four near the ridge-transform intersection. The locations have errors less than 10 km and frequently less than 3 km. There is no direct evidence for seismicity connected with geothermal activity on Ascension Island during the observation period.  相似文献

In this paper we analyze the main available data related to the geothermal system of Ischia Island, starting from the first geothermal exploration in 1939. Our aim is to define a conceptual model of the geothermal reservoir, according to geological, geochemical, geophysical and stratigraphic data. In recent times, the interest on geothermal exploitation for electricity generation in Italy is rapidly increasing and the Ischia Island is one of the main targets for future geothermal exploitation. Nowadays, one of the main economic resources of the island is the tourism, mainly driven by the famous thermal springs; so, it is crucial to study the possible interaction between geothermal exploitation and thermal spring activities. To this aim, we also analyze the possible disturbance on temperature and pressure in the shallow geothermal reservoir, due to the heat withdrawal for electric production related to small power plant size (1–5 MWe). Such analysis has been performed by using numerical simulations based on a well known thermofluid-dynamical code (TOUGH2®). Obtained results show that such geothermal exploitation generates a perturbation of temperature and pressure field which, however, is confined in a small volume around the well. At shallow level (0–100 m) the exploitation does not produce any appreciable disturbance, and can be made compatible with thermal spring exploitation. Moreover, such results are crucial both for the evaluation of volcanological processes in the island and for the general assessment of geothermal resource sustainability.  相似文献

Following on from surface exploration surveys performed during the 1970s and early 1980s, exploration drilling was carried out in the Tendaho Rift, in Central Afar (Ethiopia), from October 1993 to June 1995. Three deep and one shallow well were drilled in the central part of the Northern Tendaho Rift to verify the existence of a geothermal reservoir and its possible utilisation for electric power generation. The project was jointly financed by the Ethiopian Ministry of Mines and Energy and the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Project activities were performed by the Ethiopian Institute of Geological Surveys and Aquater SpA. The main reservoir engineering data discussed in this paper were collected during drilling and testing of the above four wells, three of which are located inside the Dubti Cotton Plantation, in which a promising hydrothermal area was identified by surface exploration surveys. Drilling confirmed the existence of a liquid-dominated shallow reservoir inside the Dubti Plantation, characterised by a boiling-point-for-depth temperature distribution down to about 500 m depth. The main permeable zones in the Sedimentary Sequence, which is made up of lacustrine deposits, are located in correspondence to basalt lava flow interlayerings, or at the contact between volcanic and sedimentary rocks. At depth, the basaltic lava flows that characterise the Afar Stratoid Series seem to have low permeability, with the exception of fractured zones associated with sub-vertical faults. Two different upflows of geothermal fluids have been inferred: one flow connected to the Dubti fault feeds the shallow reservoir crossed by wells TD-2 and TD-4, where a maximum temperature of 245 °C was recorded; the second flow seems to be connected with a fault located east of well TD-1, where the maximum recorded temperature was 270 °C. A schematic conceptual model of the Dubti hydrothermal area, as derived from reservoir engineering studies integrated with geological, geophysical and geochemical data, has been tested by numerical simulation, using the TOUGH2/EWASG code. Preliminary simulations, using a simple 3-D numerical model of the Dubti fault area, showed that measured temperature and pressure distribution, as well as evaluated non-condensable gas pressure at reservoir conditions, are compatible with the rise of geothermal fluid, at about 290 °C, along the sub-vertical Dubti fault from beneath the surface manifestations DB1, DB2 and DB3 located at the south-eastern end of the fault. According to the proven shallow field potential, development of this field could meet the predicted electricity requirements of Central Afar until the year 2015.  相似文献

Acoustic emissions (AE) during a massive hydraulic fracturing experiment in a geothermal production well in Nigorikawa field, Hokkaido, Japan, were measured using an acceleration sensitive downhole AE sonde installed in a 30 m well. Crack extensions at a depth of 1500 m were detected and characterized by long-distance AE measurements. The mechanism by which productivity was increased in the geothermal well through hydraulic fracturing has been represented by a model based on AE data and geological considerations.  相似文献

Microseismic monitoring of the Chipilapa-Ahuachapán area was carried out during August-November 1988 and October 1991–April 1992. The objective was to use the study of microearthquakes as an exploration tool to invvestigate the geothermal potential of the Chipilapa area and to evaluate the main characteristics of the seismic activity, prior to and during the exploitation tests. Since 1989, seven wells have been drilled in the area, two of which have encountered three geothermal aquifers that could be exploited for electricity generation by means of binary-cycle technology. The 1988 survey detected important, shallow and low magnitude seismic activity, located mainly south and southwest of the explored area. This activity is possibly related to the recharge zone of the Chipilapa-Ahuachapán geothermal system, located further south, beneath the Pleistocene Pacific Volcanic Chain. The 1991–1992 survey confirmed the existence of seismicity beneath the southern volcanic axis, but other important clusters of activity were recorded northward, related to the deeper structures of the Central Graben, and southwest of the Ahuachapán geothermal field, close to the 1990 hydrothermal eruption of Agua Shuca. Shallow microseismic activity also appeared along the faults limiting the Chipilapa geothermal field to the east. Although it is probable that this seismicity is due to fluid circulation in fractures, no geothermal reservoirs were intercepted by wells CHA and CH8. Moreover, no significant induced seismicity was recorded during production and injection tests.  相似文献

In the last 15 years geothermal exploration in Tuscany, Italy, has addressed deep reservoirs (depth ≥ 3000 m), hosted within complex geological systems, such as metamorphic formations and/or intrusive bodies. Reservoir productivity is linked to fractured and permeable zones that are rather confined and not uniformly distributed. In this context, the seismic methods represent one of the most reliable geophysical techniques for locating potential drilling targets. A 3D seismic survey has been acquired at the Travale test site, and its results have been used to develop a geological and structural model of the site, and to identify and characterize fractured zones inside the deep geothermal reservoir. A correlation between a high-amplitude reflector (H marker) and fractured contact-metamorphic rocks has been highlighted. More than 70% of the total geothermal fluid production at the Travale area comes from this seismic marker.

The 2000–2005 management and field monitoring procedures at the Balcova–Narlidere geothermal field, Turkey are described. During that period, fluid production increased from 140 to 300 kg/s and the living space being heated grew from 0.64 to 1.6 million m2. The shallow (depth <160 m) injection done between 1996 and 2002 cooled the fluids being produced; the hydraulic connection between shallow production and injection wells was confirmed by tracer tests. Two deep injection wells were drilled to mitigate the problem and to increase injection capacity. Because net fluid extraction was reduced, reservoir pressure drawdown was controlled. Wells drilled after 2000 indicated that the eastern portion of the field had greater potential and yielded higher temperature fluids. After testing and establishing well flow performance, pump capacities were matched to production well capacities. Mineral scaling in wells and surface installations was brought under control reducing the annual cost of inhibitors by about US$100,000. Since all production and injection wells are located near the Agamemnon fault zone and because the capacity of the district heating system is being continuously increased, there is the risk of thermal breakthrough in the production wells.  相似文献

Heating and freezing data were obtained for liquid-rich secondary fluid inclusions in magmatic quartz, hydrothermal calcite and hydrothermal quartz crystals from 19 sampled depths in eight production drill holes (PGM-1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 11, 12 and 15) of the Miravalles geothermal field in northwestern Costa Rica. Homogenization temperatures for 386 fluid inclusions range from near the present measured temperatures to as much as 70°C higher than the maximum measured well temperature of about 240°C. Melting-point temperature measurements for 76 fluid inclusions suggest a calculated salinity range of about 0.2–1.9 wt% NaCl equivalent. Calculated salinities as high as 3.1–4.0 wt% NaCl equivalent for 20 fluid inclusions from the lower part of drill hole PGM-15 (the deepest drill hole) indicate that higher salinity water probably was present in the deeper part of the Miravalles geothermal field at the time these fluid inclusions were formed.  相似文献

The thermoluminescence glow-curve of quartz in volcanic and pyroclastic rocks of the Miocene and Quaternary in the Kakkonda geothermal field was divided into L (low), M (medium) and H (high) peaks in order of increasing temperature. Thermoluminescence emission is independent of stratigraphic boundaries but it is closely related to surface geothermal manifestations. Thermally stimulated processes of thermoluminescence caused by natural annealing occurred in the Quaternary after the eruption of the Tamagawa Welded Tuffs; radiation storage processes then began, as a consequence of the temperature drop. Thermoluminescence behavior indicates natural temperature manifestations, together with the paleo-temperature history. The H peak was thermally stable compared to the L and M peaks, and the area within which the relative intensity of the H peak is less than 5% coincides with the surface zone where dominant fluid flow is convective. In addition, L and M peaks indicate that a relatively low-temperature fluid mixes with the hot upflow around the western margin of the ascending flow zone.Thermoluminescence characteristics reflect paleo-temperature history and are related to geothermal fluid flow. Thermoluminescence is an effective exploration technique for evaluating natural temperature manifestations and subterranean heat flow in geothermal systems.  相似文献

Hypersaline metal-rich liquid (ca. 40 wt% total chloride species) was obtained from a depth of 3708 m in the Kakkonda geothermal system. Sampling of well WD-1a was conducted by reverse circulation after a standing time of about 196 hours (with temperature recovering to >500°C). Tritium content and the relationship between δD and δ18O showed that the river water that was circulated in the well had mixed with an isotopically heavy fluid during the standing time. Phase separation occurred during temperature recovery, concentrating the hypersaline liquid in the bottom of the well. This original hypersaline liquid has a salinity of about 55 wt% NaCl eq., consisting of Na–Fe–K–Mn–Ca chloride, rich in Zn and Pb but poor in Cu, Au and Ag. The fluid originates from the Kakkonda granite and mixed with circulating water from the well in a zone of fine fractures induced by thermal stress during drilling.  相似文献

This study addresses the hydrogeochemistry of thermal springs that emerge from the Asmari limestone in a gorge at Changal Anticline in the vicinity of the Salman-Farsi dam. The Changal thermal springs vary in temperature between 28 and 40 °C. Chemical and isotopic compositions of the thermal waters suggest two distinct hydrogeological systems: a deep, moderate-temperature (∼40 °C) geothermal system recharged by deeply circulating meteoric waters, and a shallow cold aquifer system related to local groundwater. The source geothermal fluid temperature was calculated using different geothermometers and mineral saturation indexes. Based on chemical and isotopic data, it is hypothesized that: (1) mixing occurs between the ascending geothermal water and shallow cold water; (2) the resulting thermal waters reaching surface are a mixture of 80% local, shallow meteoric water and 20% geothermal water; and (3) the circulation depth of the meteoric water is about 1500 m. The thermal reservoir temperature is estimated to be between 70 and 80 °C according to calculations using different geothermometers and computation of saturation indices for different solid phases.  相似文献
