This study examines the goal of value sought by players of the massively multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPGs). We drew on the Means-end Chains (MECs) model frequently used in marketing as a theoretical basis. Soft laddering method was also adopted as a tool for in-depth interviews. Content analysis was used to analyze the “Attributes–Consequences–Values” for MMORPGs players, then converted into a hierarchical value map (HVM). The study found that role-playing, interface design, multiplayer gaming, independent play, popularity and virtual pets were the order of game attributes users took into consideration when playing MMORPGs. The consequences benefits for the users were, in order, enhanced interaction, more fun, enhanced efficiency, fantasy fulfillment, winning, novelty, more insurance, increased wealth and stress relief. The value targets sought by players were concluded to be fun and enjoyment in life, sense of accomplishment, warm relationships with others, sense of belonging and security in order of importance.  相似文献

Online games represent a burgeoning market sector with growth potential. The distinctive entertainment-oriented features of such games provide experiential motives for users. However, most previous studies have focused on the single dimensional affective motive of online game use. The multi-dimensional affective motivational aspects of entertainment technologies have been relatively neglected. In addition, previous studies report inconsistent relationships between motives and online game usage. To fill these gaps in the literature, the present study proposes five experiential motives such as concentration, enjoyment, escape, epistemic curiosity, and social affiliation as predictors of intention to play online games. External locus of control is also introduced as a moderator in the links between experiential motives and intention. The model was tested with the data from 576 current online game players who answered online survey. Structural equation model analysis confirmed that three experiential motives with the exception of concentration and epistemic curiosity have a positive effect on intention. χ2 difference test confirmed that the coefficients linking experiential motives such as concentration, enjoyment, and escape to intention are higher for people with external locus of control than for people with internal locus of control. Implications are discussed in conclusion.  相似文献

As a novel interaction and presentation technology, Augmented Reality (AR) has been widely used in education, tourism, entertainment, psychology, and many other applications. In the game industry, this revolutionary technology has introduced a new form of interaction between players and the gaming environment. In this article, we aim to find if exploiting AR in computer games can enhance the sense of immersion, and consequently, satisfying the players. To this end, a mobile game called Ladybug is implemented using three different techniques including the regular virtual reality (VR) camera, single AR camera, and stereoscopic AR camera. The results of a comprehensive user study on these techniques showed that the single AR camera and stereoscopic AR camera can result in more sense of immersion in players in comparison to the VR camera. However, the hypothesis that the stereoscopic AR results in more sense of presence in comparison to the single AR camera is rejected. On the other hand, our findings show that the AR stereoscopic camera can lead to a better emotional involvement and enjoyment in comparison to the single AR camera and VR camera.  相似文献

The Sharetouch system is designed for raising users’ participation in community events. We put three subsystems into Sharetouch: (1) community pond, (2) Waterball interactive game, and (3) multimedia sharing. Sharetouch is based on an optical touch device designed by the Joyplux Company with an infrared LED and camera. This device can support multi-touch functions within a large display area. The software of Sharetouch was developed within XNA and .NET frameworks. We project the users as fish in our community pond. Sharetouch displays all the friends as fish when the users log into the system. Therefore, the number of fish equals the number of friends of the users. This design encourages users to make more friends to increase the number of fish. Waterball is a game that combines virtual images and real objects. The concept is based on the Nintendo Wii games, as players hold controllers (real objects) to play the games (virtual images). We also apply the concept of the cloud flash drive to multimedia sharing to avoid the trouble of carrying a real flash disk. This study employed the TAM measure to measure the validity of Sharetouch in this social platform. Our findings indicated that all proposed hypotheses had a positive and significant impact on the intention of older people to interact with Sharetouch. Unlike the computer-based system, Sharetouch is created as a user-friendly interface system. Sharetouch can enrich the users’ social network experiences through its hardware and software architectures.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider a class of infinite-horizon discrete-time linear quadratic N-person games, in which one of the players lacks complete information about the game. With the assumptions of a perfect state information pattern and steady state feedback strategies, we convert the original game problem into a multivariable adaptive control problem by making use of the concept of fictitious play and the scheme of adaptive control. For the proposed adjustment procedure, we prove that each element of the estimates converges to its corresponding true value under the condition of persistent excitation. We also carry out a sensitivity analysis of performance indices with respect to the embedded unknowns by using multiple models.  相似文献

Sex role stereotyping by players in first-person shooter games and other online gaming environments may encourage a social environment that marginalizes and alienates female players. Consistent with the social identity model of deindividuation effects (SIDE), the anonymity of online games may engender endorsement of group-consistent attitudes and amplification of social stereotyping, such as the adherence to gender norms predicted by expectations states theory. A 2 × 3 × 2 virtual field experiment (N = 520) in an online first-person shooter video game examined effects of a confederate players’ sex, communication style, and skill on players’ compliance with subsequent online friend requests. We found support for the hypothesis that, in general, women would gain more compliance with friend requests than men. We also found support for the hypothesis that women making positive utterances would gain more compliance with friend requests than women making negative utterances, whereas men making negative utterances would gain more compliance with friend requests than men making positive utterances. The hypothesis that player skill (i.e., game scores) would predict compliance with friend requests was not supported. Implications for male and female game players and computer-mediated communication in online gaming environments are discussed.  相似文献

The matrix game and bi-matrix game are typical non-cooperative games. Nowadays, interactive game decisions on social management are mainly concerned, especially when players are faced with uncertain payoffs. The aim of this paper is to develop simple and effective parameterized linear programming methods for solving two types of matrix games with payoffs expressed by intuitionistic fuzzy (IF) information. In these methods, the expected values of players are regarded as monotonic functions with their risk preferences. Hereby we construct two models of auxiliary bilinear programming, and the corresponding optimal strategies can be easily obtained by explicit computation. The models and methods proposed in this paper are applied in two ecological management problems, and the validity and applicability are verified.

Personalised content adaptation has great potential to increase user engagement in video games. Procedural generation of user-tailored content increases the self-motivation of players as they immerse themselves in the virtual world. An adaptive user model is needed to capture the skills of the player and enable automatic game content altering algorithms to fit the individual user. We propose an adaptive user modelling approach using a combination of unobtrusive physiological data to identify strengths and weaknesses in user performance in car racing games. Our system creates user-tailored tracks to improve driving habits and user experience, and to keep engagement at high levels. The user modelling approach adopts concepts from the Trace Theory framework; it uses machine learning to extract features from the user’s physiological data and game-related actions, and cluster them into low level primitives. These primitives are transformed and evaluated into higher level abstractions such as experience, exploration and attention. These abstractions are subsequently used to provide track alteration decisions for the player. Collection of data and feedback from 52 users allowed us to associate key model variables and outcomes to user responses, and to verify that the model provides statistically significant decisions personalised to the individual player. Tailored game content variations between users in our experiments, as well as the correlations with user satisfaction demonstrate that our algorithm is able to automatically incorporate user feedback in subsequent procedural content generation.  相似文献

We describe the design process of an affective control toy, named SenToy, used to control a synthetic character in a computer game. SenToy allows players to influence the emotions of a synthetic character placed in FantasyA, a 3D virtual game. By expressing gestures associated with anger, fear, surprise, sadness and joy through SenToy, players influence the emotions of the character they control in the game. When designing SenToy we hypothesized that players would manipulate the toy to express emotions using a particular set of gestures. Those gestures were drawn from literature on how we express emotions through bodily movements and from emotion theories. To evaluate our idea we performed a Wizard Of Oz study [1]. The results of the study show that there are behaviours that players easily pick up for expressing emotions through the gestures with the toy, though not necessarily the ones extracted from literature. The study also provided some indication on what type of toy we should build, in particular, its ‘look and feel’. Correspondence to: Ms A. An approach for capturing and modeling individual entertainment (“fun”) preferences is applied to users of the innovative Playware playground, an interactive physical playground inspired by computer games, in this study. The goal is to construct, using representative statistics computed from children’s physiological signals, an estimator of the degree to which games provided by the playground engage the players. For this purpose children’s heart rate (HR) signals, and their expressed preferences of how much “fun” particular game variants are, are obtained from experiments using games implemented on the Playware playground. A comprehensive statistical analysis shows that children’s reported entertainment preferences correlate well with specific features of the HR signal. Neuro-evolution techniques combined with feature set selection methods permit the construction of user models that predict reported entertainment preferences given HR features. These models are expressed as artificial neural networks and are demonstrated and evaluated on two Playware games and two control tasks requiring physical activity. The best network is able to correctly match expressed preferences in 64% of cases on previously unseen data (p−value 6 · 10−5). The generality of the methodology, its limitations, its usability as a real-time feedback mechanism for entertainment augmentation and as a validation tool are discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Video game avatars have been understood as a key site of players’ “affective investment” in play and games. In this article, we extend this conversation to explore the avatar’s role in engaging players with gaming platforms. Through a case study of Team Fortress 2 (Valve Software, 2007) and the Steam platform, we demonstrate the avatar’s function beyond gameworlds as a tool for encouraging certain kinds of play. Team Fortress 2, we argue, is a crucial testing ground for Valve’s experiments with gaming economies via the Steam platform. By extension, we show the importance of video game avatars for encouraging affective investment in platforms more broadly, including Microsoft’s Xbox Live, PlayStation Network and even workplace dashboards.  相似文献

Online games have exploded in popularity, but for many researchers access to players has been difficult. The study reported here is the first to collect a combination of survey and behavioral data with the cooperation of a major virtual world operator. In the current study, 7,000 players of the massively multiplayer online game (MMO) EverQuest 2 were surveyed about their offline characteristics, their motivations and their physical and mental health. These self‐report data were then combined with data on participants’ actual in‐game play behaviors, as collected by the game operator. Most of the results defy common stereotypes in surprising and interesting ways and have implications for communication theory and for future investigations of games.  相似文献

Navigation and monitoring of large and crowded virtual environments is a challenging task and requires intuitive camera control techniques to assist users. In this paper, we present a novel automatic camera control technique providing a scene analysis framework based on information theory. The developed framework contains a probabilistic model of the scene to build entropy and expectancy maps. These maps are utilized to find interest points which represent either characteristic behaviors of the crowd or novel events occurring in the scene. After an interest point is chosen, the camera is updated accordingly to display this point. We tested our model in a crowd simulation environment and it performed successfully. Our method can be integrated into existent camera control modules in computer games, crowd simulations and movie pre-visualization applications.  相似文献

There is evidence that people expect to be able to play games with autonomous robots, so that robogames could be one of the next killer applications for Robotics. Physically Interactive RoboGames (PIRG) is a new application field where autonomous robots are involved in games requiring physical interaction with people. Since research in this field is taking its first steps, definitions and design guidelines are still largely missing. In this paper, a definition for PIRG is proposed, together with guidelines for their design. Physically Interactive, Competitive RoboGames (PICoRG) are also introduced. They are a particular kind of PIRG where human players are involved in a challenging, highly interactive and competitive game activity with autonomous robots. The development process of a PICoRG, Jedi Trainer, is presented to show a practical application of the proposed guidelines. The game has been successfully played in different unstructured environments, by the general public; feedback is reported and analyzed.  相似文献

Quantum generalizations of conventional games broaden the range of available strategies, which can help improve outcomes for the participants. With many players, such quantum games can involve entanglement among many states which is difficult to implement, especially if the states must be communicated over some distance. This paper describes a quantum approach to the economically significant n-player public goods game that requires only two-particle entanglement and is thus much easier to implement than more general quantum mechanisms. In spite of the large temptation to free ride on the efforts of others in the original game, two-particle entanglement is sufficient to give near optimal expected payoff when players use a simple mixed strategy for which no player can benefit by making different choices. This mechanism can also address some heterogeneous preferences among the players. PACS: 03.67-a; 02.50Le; 89.65.Gh  相似文献

The ubiquity of camera phones provides a convenient platform to develop immersive mixed-reality games. In this paper we introduce such a game which is loosely based on the popular card game “Memory”, where players are asked to match a pair of identical cards among a set of overturned cards by revealing only two cards at a time. In our game, the players are asked to match a “digital card”, which corresponds to a scene in a virtual world, to a “physical card”, which is an image of a scene in the real world. The objective is to convey a mixed-reality sensation. Cards are matched with a scene identification engine which consists of multiple classifiers trained on previously collected images. We present our comprehensive overall game design, as well as implementation details and results. We also describe how we constructed our scene identification engine and its performance. Finally, we present an analysis of player surveys to gauge the potential market acceptance.

Being one of the most commercially successful entertainment software applications, massively multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPGs) continue to expand in term of the revenue they generate as well as the involvement of users who congregate in their virtual space and form communities around them to support each other. Unlike conventional offline computer games, or networked games with limited numbers of players, MMORPGs are not merely software applications as they are usually seen as a space with complicated dynamics of social interactions. Hence, it is believed that playing these games might cause cognitive overload problems among the players as they have to constantly interact with the game world as well as with other users. We conducted an exploratory study using qualitative methods to explore cognitive overloads in Maple Story, a typical MMORPG. Our results reveal that several types of cognitive overloads emerge during the game playing. While some of these overloads pose serious problems even to expert players, players seem to develop strategies to overcome them. It is found that some forms of cognitive load are actually desirable in order to make the game challenging. We have also created a set of recommendations that can help game developers handle cognitive load problems in MMORPGs.  相似文献

Most research on the topic conducted in the past did not elaborate in depth on the attributes of games that correspond to specific learning results. In this study, the means-end chain theory has been adopted as the theoretical basis to focus on the players of SimCity and The Sims (two of the most representative titles of the simulation game genre) as the subjects of the research. Through in-depth interviews conducted using the Soft Laddering approach, the study aims to examine the key attributes that would trigger learning results for players when playing games and the terminal values that the players would experience internally. The study also featured group comparison of subjects based on their gender. Results of the study showed that gamers still emphasise on the key aspects of Simulated reality and Self-created game content for simulation games. These two attributes have been found to lead to the learning results of Gain authentic experience and Cultivate imagination and creativity, ultimately leading to the terminal value of Sense of accomplishment.  相似文献

Movement Awareness for Ubiquitous Game Control   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper describes a sensing system for recognising and characterising human movements and its application to ubiquitous gaming. In particular this paper considers the control of computer games through players interacting with the physical environment around them in a natural and appropriate manner. This pushes the interface into the environment, and pulls ubiquitous computing into the game. This is achieved using a sentient computing system. Such a system senses the location, motions, actions and even physiological responses of users. This sensory data can be used to interface and control a game. A good example is 3D first-person games and we demonstrate a system in which actions in the game are mapped to similar actions in the real world. Correspondence to: R.
