Mineral fertilizer use is increasing in West Africa though little information is available on yield response in farmers' fields. Farmers in this region plant at low density (average 5,000 pockets ha–1, 3 plants pocket–1), which can affect fertilizer use efficiency. A study was conducted with 20 farmers in Niger to assess the response of pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.] to phosphorus and nitrogen fertilizers under farm conditions. In each field, treatments included control, single superphosphate (SSP) only, SSP plus N (point placed near plant), and either SSP or partially acidulated phosphate rock (PAPR) plus N broadcast. N and P were applied at 30 kg N ha–1 and 30 kg P2O5 ha–1. Farmers were allowed to plant, weed, etc., as they wished and they planted at densities ranging from 2,000 to 12,000 pockets ha–1. In the absence of fertilizer, increasing density from 2,000 to 7,000 pockets ha–1 increased yield by 400%. A strong interaction was found between fertilizer use and density. Farmers planting at densities less than 3,500 pockets ha–1 had average yields of 317 kg grain ha–1 while those planting at densities higher than 6,500 pockets ha–1 showed average yields of 977 grain ha–1. Though phosphate alone increased yields significantly at all densities, little response to fertilizer N was found at densities below 6,000 pockets ha–1. Significant residual responses in 1987 and 1988 were found to P applied in high-density plots in 1986. Depending on fertilizer and grain prices, analysis showed that fertilizer use must be be combined with high plant density (10,000 pockets ha–1) or no economic benefit from fertilizer use will be realized.  相似文献

Sixteen experiments were carried out on maincrop potatoes (Solanum tuberosum) in the main growing areas of the United Kingdom to compare broadcast, sideband placed and split applications of compound fertilizer. In experiments without irrigation, yield increased up to about 1250 kg ha–1 of compound fertilizer (N:P:K 15:6.6:15.8 or 15:8.3:15.8), while with full irrigation there was a response to at least 1875 kg ha–1. Placement gave a higher yield than broadcast at 625 kg ha–1, while at 1250 kg ha–1 and 1875 kg ha–1 broadcast, placed and split applications gave similar yields.  相似文献

The use of fluid fertilizers has increased in recent years. Plant response to field management practices of fluid and solid N fertilizers in furrow-irrigated field studies has not been well-documented. This research studied the response of corn (Zea mays L.) to several field management practices of fluid and solid N fertilizers applied at several rates. Corn grown with sidedressed applications of the fluid fertilizers, urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) and 18-0-0+7Ca, generally had higher grain yields, higher yield efficiencies, higher ear populations, larger seed size, more kernels per ear, and a higher ear leaf N concentration than corn grown with preplant broadcast treatments of urea, ammonium nitrate (AN), and UAN. In 1988, corn grown with 280 kg N ha–1 of AN applied preplant broadcast had a lower grain yield, yield efficiency, kernels per ear, and ear leaf N concentration, while ear population and kernel size were unchanged, in comparison to split applications of UAN at 224 kg N ha–1. In 1989, corn grown with three split applications of UAN at 280 kg N ha–1 had a higher grain yield and produced more kernels per ear without affecting yield efficiency, ear population, kernel size, or ear leaf N concentration compared with treatments at the 224 kg N ha–1 rate. Use of split, side-dressed N management practices in furrow-irrigated corn should eliminate the need to use excessive N rates while maintaining grain yields and other plant responses, resulting in more efficient N use than traditionally achieved.  相似文献

This study consisted of a survey on the nutritional status of rice plants in relation to nutrient application and yield in 70 farmers' fields in four provinces of Bangkok plain during the 1977 wet season. In addition a series of fertilizer experiments were carried out on rice experimental stations in the same provinces to study yield response to N and P fertilization and to develop a fertilizer recommendation system based on plant analysis. The average grain yield in the survey was 3.2 t ha–1 and the early (high yielding varieties), medium (local) and late maturity (local) types yielded 3.3, 2.8 and 3.0 t ha–1, respectively. The average amount of fertilizers applied to these maturity types were 33, 15 and 7 kg N ha–1 and 15, 8 and 6 kg P ha–1, respectively. Regression analysis indicated only a slight correlation between yield and any level of fertilizer application. On experimental stations yields over 6 t ha–1 were obtained with applications of N over 100 kg ha–1 and P over 22 kg ha–1. Evaluation of nutritional status of plants based on plant analysis showed that in all provinces there were strong and widespread nutrient deficiences primarily of N and secondarily of P, and possibly of some other nutrients. Fertilizer application based on plant analysis gave high yield responses. It was concluded that the major constraints of yield on Bangkok plain are too low fertilizer application especially of N, and unbalanced fertilization of N and P.  相似文献

Integrated soil management with leguminous cover crops was studied at two sites in the northern Guinea savanna zone of northern Nigeria, Kaduna (190 day growing season) and Bauchi (150 days). One-year planted fallows of mucuna, lablab, and crotalaria were compared with natural grass fallow and cowpea controls. All treatments were followed by a maize test crop in the second year with 0, 30, or 60 kg N ha–1 as urea. Above ground legume residues were not incorporated into the soil and most residues were burned early in the dry season at the Kaduna site. Legume rotation increased soil total N, maize growth in greenhouse pots, and dry matter and N accumulation of maize. Response of maize grain yield to 30 kg N ha–1 as urea was highly significant at both sites and much greater than the response to legume rotation. The mean N fertilizer replacement value from legume rotation was 14 kg N ha–1 at Kaduna and 6 kg N ha–1 at Bauchi. W ith no N applied to the maize test crop, maize grain yield following legume fallow was 365 kg ha–1 higher than natural fallow at Bauchi and 235 kg ha–1 higher at Kaduna. The benefit of specific legume fallows to subsequent maize was mostly related to above ground N of the previous legume at Bauchi, where residues were protected from fire and grazing. At Kaduna, where fallow vegetation was burned, maize yield was related to estimated below ground N. The results show that legume rotation alone results in small maize yield increases in the dry savanna zone.  相似文献

In pot and field experiments conducted in 1990 and 1991 on an acid sandy, phosphorus (P) deficient soil in Niger, West Africa, the effect of seed coating on seedling emergence, early growth and grain yield of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.) was studied. Seeds of pearl millet were coated with different rates (0; 0.5; 1.0; 2.0; 5.0; 10.0 mg P seed–1) and types of P fertilizers (single superphosphate, ammonium dihydrogen phosphate; monocalcium phosphate, sodium dihydrogen phosphate and sodium triphosphate). Seedling emergence was generally reduced at coating rates higher than 0.5 mg P seed–1 and prevented with single superphosphate and sodium triphosphate at rates higher than 5 mg P seed–1. No correlation was found between the pH and osmomolity of the coatings and final emergence of millet seedlings. The most favourable effect on plant growth and P content was achieved with ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (AHP) as seed coating. This was attributed to the enhancement effect of ammonium on P uptake. Compared to the untreated control dry matter production at 20 days after planting (DAP) was increased by 280%, P content per plant by 330%, total biomass at maturity by 30% and grain yield by 45%. Although seed coating with AHP may be harmful to seedlings emergence, it represents a suitable method to enhance early growth and increase yield of pearl millet.  相似文献

Winter wheat crops were grown with ostensibly adequate supplies of all soil nutrients in 1990 and 1991 with the aim of testing if late foliar supplements of K and N, applied at key development stages, could improve grain yield and grain N content. Foliar sprays of KNO3 solution, supplying up to 40 kg K ha–1 in total, at flag leaf unfolded, inflorescence completed and the watery-ripe stage of grain filling, had no effect on yield, yield components or grain N. Urea, supplying 40 kg N ha–1 at flag leaf unfolded, had no effects on grain yield and grain N in 1990, but in 1991 grain N was increased by 0.14% whilst yield was reduced by up to 0.6 t ha–1. Urea scorched flag leaf tips in both years. In 1990, the spring was very dry and foliar supplements might have been expected to have had an effect, but on this highly fertile soil all crop K and N requirements were met from the soil.  相似文献

Not much is known about the response of lowland rice to K fertilization under Brazilian conditions. A field experiment was conducted during four consecutive years to determine the response of three lowland rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars to K fertilization on a Low Humic Gley soil. In the first two years, K was broadcast at rates of 0, 42, 84, 126, and 168 kg K ha–1. In the last two years K rates were reduced to 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 kg K ha–1 and applied in a band. Potassium significantly (P < 0.01) increased grain yields but the response varied from cultivar to cultivar and year to year. Yield responses to K fertilization were superimposed on a general trend of increasing grain yields across the four growing seasons. Mean grain yields increased 14.3% with broadcast application of K in the first two years and 10.4% with banded application of K in the last two years when compared to the control treatments. Extractable soil K increased with K application rate and decreased with soil depth. Potassium was rapidly removed from the soil and yearly broadcast or banded application of K can be expected to result in a significant increase in grain yield of lowland rice in these soils.  相似文献

Field trials were conducted during the 1980–82 seasons to study the response dryland sorghum to nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization in a ferruginous tropical soil. Treatments tested were factorial combinations of three rates of nitrogen (0, 60 and 120 kg N ha–1) and four rates of phosphorus (0, 11, 22 and 33 kg P ha–1). Grain and straw yields and yield components were enhanced by nitrogen fertilization in two out of three years. The optimum N rate for grain yield was 60 kg N ha–1 while straw yield responded up to 120 kg N ha–1. The optimum P rate for dryland sorghum was 11 kg P ha–1. Both N and P enhanced grain weight per head, grain number, test weight and tillering significantly but it was only N which enhanced 1000-grain weight and flag leaf area. Dry matter productin was increased by N fertilization but not by P. There were no significant N × P interactions for any of the parameters studied. Dryland sorghum response to N and P fertilization was influenced by season, time of planting and rainfall distribution.  相似文献

Split broadcast applications of prilled urea, deep point-placed urea supergranules (USG), and broadcast sulfur-coated urea (SCU) were compared as nitrogen sources for wetland rice (Oryza sativa L.) in two field experiments on a sandy soil (Typic Ustipsamment) with a high percolation rate (approx. 110 mm/day) in the Punjab, India. The USG was consistently less effective than the split urea and averaged 1 ton ha–1 less rice yield at the highest nitrogen rate (116 kg N ha–1). SCU produced the highest grain yields in both experiments; it averaged 1.7 ton ha–1 more than did the split urea at the highest N rate. The fertilisers were then compared in field microplots; percolation was permitted or prevented so that the cause of the poor performance of USG could be elucidated. USG gave higher grain yield and N uptake in microplots that were not leached than in those that were leached. In leached microplots, the grain yields were higher from prilled urea than from USG treatments provided the placement pattern of the USG matched that of the field plots. Yields were not higher from treatments in which the USG were more closely spaced. In microplots in which leaching was prevented, the broadcast prilled urea was less effective than the deep-placed USG, which gave yields approximately 60% greater than those from split urea and the same as those from SCU. Broadcast prilled urea in undrained microplots caused high levels of ammonium (40 ppm) to develop in the floodwater where high pH (8.9) and high alkalinity (4.9 meq l–1) may have led to extensive ammonia volatilisation. The use of USG and SCU in undrained microplots reduced floodwater ammonium levels to less than 3 ppm.Urea and ammonium leaching losses measured in fallow soil columns in the laboratory were much greater from USG than from prilled urea. Leaching losses from SCU were negligible. The data suggest that SCU is the preferred N source for rice soils having a high percolation rate and that USG is a poor alternative to split applications of prilled urea.  相似文献

Even though K is an essential nutrient, the response of upland rice to K fertilization under field conditions has not been adequately documented. This research was conducted to examine the influence of K fertilization on yield of upland rice (Oryza sativa L.). In the first three years, K was broadcast at rates of 0, 42, 84, 126 and 168 kg K ha–1. In the last two years K was banded at rates of 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 kg K ha–1. The experiment was conducted on an Oxisol (Typic Haplustox) during five consecutive years. Potassium significantly increased grain yields and dry matter production but response varied from cultivar to cultivar and year to year. Drought and panicle neck blast played an important role in limiting upland rice yield response to K fertilization. Potassium application rates associated with maximum grain yield varied from 83 to 127 kg K ha–1 when K was broadcast and from 47 to 67 kg K ha–1 when K was banded. Previous broadcast K, favorable weather and blast resistant cultivars probably contributed to higher yields with K banding in the fourth and fifth growing seasons.  相似文献

Effects of rate and placement of phosphate and potassium fertilizers was studied using a 4-year rotation of corn (Zea mays L.), soybeans (Glycine max L.), wheat (Triticum vulgare L.) and hay (later changed to corn). Yields increased with increased P until 22 kg P ha–1 yr–1 was applied. Yields increased with increased K applications to 140 kg K ha–1 yr–1. Broadcast P applications gave high yields than row applications. Crop response to P was affected more by soil P level than by application to the specific crop. Residual effect from K fertilizer applications did not last as long as the residual effect from P application. Soil tests for available P were closely correlated with rate of P application over the 25-year period. Soil tests for P were higher where P was banded where P was broadcast indicating less tie-up of P by the soil where less mixing occurred.Journal Paper No. 7910, Purdue University Agricultural Experiment Station.  相似文献

Cereals grown on calcareous soils in a dry Mediterranean climate have generally responded to P fertilizer. Broadcasting is the common practice used by most farmers. The effects of rate and method of phosphate placement on dry matter production (TDM), grain yield and P uptake by durum wheat (Triticum vulgare L.) were investigated. Factorial experiments with four levels of P (0, 17.5, 35, and 52.5 kg P ha–1) and 2 methods of application (banding by drilling with the seeds, and broadcasting before surface tillage and sowing) were conducted for three consecutive seasons at three experimental sites: Breda (Typic Calciorthid, 281 mm); Tel Hadya (Chromoxeretic Rhodoxeralf, 328 mm) and Jindiress (Palexerollic Chromoxerert, 471 mm). Three levels of P were used in the third season only. Treatments were replicated in three blocks. The average values of NaHCO3-extractable P in the plow layer were 2.8, 3.7 and 2.1 mg P kg–1 at Breda, Tel Hadya, and Jindiress, respectively.Above-ground total dry matter (TDM) was determined at tillering and anthesis. Grain and straw yields were estimated separately at harvest. The P concentration in plant material was determined at both stages. At tillering, TDM and total P uptake (TPU) increased linearly with the rate of P applied. It was found that (i) 17.5 kg P ha–1 banded was as effective in increasing TDM and TPU as 52.5 kg P ha–1 broadcast, and (ii) the average relative percentage increase in TDM at tillering due to P banded as compared to P broadcast was 54%, with significantly less response to banding, by maturity and harvest. The response to P placement was found to be site related. At Breda, banding was found superior to broadcasting in all 3 seasons with a relative increase in grain yields equivalent to 34, 63 and 23% in the 3 successive seasons, when optimum amounts of P were applied. However, in two out of three seasons only banding was found superior to broadcasting at both Tel Hadya and Jindiress. As a result, banding P is recommended for durum wheat grown on the calcareous soils of the Mediterranean regions because it stimulates growth and P uptake early in the season and increases the crop potential for good grain and straw yields especially in dry areas. Given equal rates of P application, banding was found superior to broadcasting in most cases.  相似文献

Five field experiments involving P application rates from 0 to 66 kg P ha–1 were conducted on irrigated wheat at Tandojam, Pakistan. The soils belonged to two great soil groups, Torrifluvent and Camborthid. All soils were calcareous. Olsen-P contents ranged from 3.5 to 6.3 mg P kg–1. Phosphate sorption curves were developed for soils from control (no P) plots at each site. Concentrations of P in solution established by fertilization in the field as estimated from the sorption curves ranged from 0.008 to 0.16mg P L–1. Actual grain yields were converted to relative grain yields and plotted against corresponding concentrations of P in solution. Yield response to P application was obtained in each experiment. Control plot yields ranged from 57 to 89% of maximum yield of respective experiments. Phosphorus requirements of wheat were 0.032 mg L–1 for 95% yield as determined from a composite yield response curve. Predicted quantities of P required to attain 0.032 mg P L–1 ranged from 18 to 29 kg P ha–1. The results of the study suggest that the P sorption approach can be used as a rational basis for making P fertilizer recommendations for various soil-crop combinations.  相似文献

The effect of seed coatings or drilled granules containing phosphorus (P) on the early growth of wheat was evaluated in a pot trial in two soils differing in P-sorption capacity. P as monocalcium phosphate (MCP) was applied in seed coatings (C) at rates of 0 (inert coating of diatomaceous earth), 5 and 10 kg P ha–1 whereas drilled rates (D) of P were applied at 0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 kg P ha–1 to wheat sown at the equivalent of 60 kg ha–1. The soils used were an aquic haplustalf with low (LS) and a gibbsiorthox with high (HS) P-sorption capacities respectively. Both soils were deficient in P, having 7.3 and 13.1 ppm available P in the LS and HS soils respectively. Emergence was recorded and plant height was measured at regular intervals. Shoot and root dry weights and P contents were determined in the final harvest at 27 days after sowing.Emergence was significantly delayed only by C10. Cumulative plant height per pot of C5 was significantly greater than that of C0, C10, D0, D5 or D10 from day 17 onwards. The only drilled treatments to produce a significant increase in plant height over D0 were D20 and D40. Dry weights increased in the LS soil up to 20 kg P ha–1 and up to 40 kg P ha–1 in the HS soil. Whilst C10 suffered some injury during emergence which also reduced the early growth of that treatment, seed coating at 5 kg P ha–1 resulted in more effective use of P than an equivalent drilled rate in both soil types, particularly with respect to plant height and root weight.  相似文献

TheAzolla pinnata (Vietnam) inoculated in rice field 10 days after transplanting (DAT) at a rate of 500 kg ha–1 fresh biomass along with phosphorus fertilizer application produced a mat on the water surface at 30 DAT. The three split application of phosphorus as 4.4, 2.2 and 2.2 kg P ha–1 applied at 10, 15 and 20 DAT, respectively produced 67% more biomass and 57% more Nitrogen inAzolla than those obtained by applying 8.8 kg P ha–1 at 10 DAT. Whereas, the two splits of phosphorus as 6.6 and 2.2 kg and 4.4 and 4.4 kg P ha–1 applied 10 and 15 DAT, respectively produced 20 and 33% more biomass and 14 and 27% more Nitrogen only. The three split application of phosphorus also increased the grain and straw yields, panicle number and weight, nitrogen concentration and its uptake in rice significantly over application of the entire amount once only. An increase of 10% grain yield and 13% straw yields was observed when 8.8 kg P ha–1 was applied in three splits rather than applied at one time. On the average an increase of 24% grain and 23% straw yields in rice were observed due toAzolla intercropping and 22% and 16%, respectively due to phosphorus application. The intercropping ofAzolla with rice along with phosphorus application also increased the fertility level of soil by increasing the total nitrogen, organic carbon and available phosphorus of soil.  相似文献

The response of crops to added P in Vertisols is generally less predictable than in other soil types under similar agroclimatic conditions. Very few studies have considered the residual effects of P while studying responses to fresh P applications. Field experiments were conducted for three years to study the response of sorghum to fertilizer P applied at 0, 10, 20 and 40 kg P ha–1, and its residual value in a Vertisol, very low in extractable P (0.4 mg P kg–1 soil), at the ICRISAT Center, Patancheru (near Hyderbad), India. In order to compare the response to fresh and residual P directly in each season, a split-plot design was adopted. One crop of sorghum (cv CSH6) was grown each year during the rainy season (June-September).The phenology of the sorghum crop and its harvest index were greatly affected by P application. The days to 50% flowering and physiological maturity were significantly reduced by P application as well as by the residues of fertilizer P applied in the previous season. In the first year of the experiment, sorghum grain yield increased from 0.14 t (no P added) to 3.48 t ha–1 with P added at the rate of 40 kg P ha–1. Phosphorus applied in the previous year was 58% as effective as fresh P but P applied two years earlier was only 18% as effective as fresh P.  相似文献

Field experiments were conducted during 1988–1989 at two adjacent sites on an acid sulfate soil (Sulfic Tropaquept) in Thailand to determine the influence of urea fertilization practices on lowland rice yield and N use efficiency. Almost all the unhydrolyzed urea completely disappeared from the floodwater within 8 to 10 d following urea application. A maximum partial pressure of ammonia (pNH3) value of 0.14 Pa and an elevation in floodwater pH to about 7.5 following urea application suggest that appreciable loss of NH3 could occur from this soil if wind speeds were favorable. Grain yields and N uptake were significantly increased with applied N over the control and affected by urea fertilization practices (4.7–5.7 Mg ha–1 in dry season and 3.0–4.1 Mg ha–1 in wet season). In terms of both grain yield and N uptake, incorporation treatments of urea as well as urea broadcasting onto drained soil followed by flooding 2 d later were more effective than the treatments in which the same fertilizer was broadcast directly into the floodwater either shortly or 10 d after transplanting (DT). The15N balance studies conducted in the wet season showed that N losses could be reduced to 31% of applied N by broadcasting of urea onto drained soil and flooding 2 d later compared with 52% loss by broadcasting of urea into floodwater at 10 DT. Gaseous N loss via NH3 volatilization was probably responsible for the poor efficiency of broadcast urea in this study.  相似文献

Field experiments with rice-wheat rotation were conducted during five consecutive years on a coarse-textured low organic matter soil. By amending the soil with 12t FYM ha–1, the yield of wetland rice in the absence of fertilizers was increased by 32 per cent. Application of 80 kg N ha–1 as urea could increase the grain yield of rice equivalent to 120 kg N ha–1 on the unamended soil. Although the soil under test was low in Olsen's P, rice did not respond to the application of phosphorus on both amended and unamended soils. For producing equivalent grain yield, fertilizer requirement of maize grown on soils amended with 6 and 12 t FYM ha–1 could be reduced, respectively to 50 and 25 per cent of the dose recommended for unamended soil (120 kg N + 26.2 kg P + 25 kg K ha–1). Grain yield of wheat grown after rice on soils amended with FYM was significantly higher than that obtained on unamended soil. In contrast, grain yield of wheat which followed maize did not differ significantly on amended or unamended soils.  相似文献

Poultry manure applied alone or in combination with urea at different N levels was evaluated as a N source for wetland rice grown in a Fatehpur loamy sand soil. Residual effects were studied on wheat which followed rice every year during the three cropping cycles. In the first year, poultry manure did not perform better than urea but by the third year, when applied in quantities sufficient to supply 120 and 180 kg N ha–1, it produced significantly more rice grain yield than the same rates of N as urea. Poultry manure sustained the grain yield of rice during the three years while the yield decreased with urea. Apparent N recovery by rice decreased from 45 to 28% during 1987 to 1989 in the case of urea, but it remained almost the same (35, 33 and 37%) for poultry manure. Thus, urea N values of poultry manure calculated from yield or N uptake data following two different approaches averaged 80, 112 and 127% in 1987, 1988 and 1989, respectively. Poultry manure and urea applied in 1:1 ratio on N basis produced yields in between the yields from the two sources applied alone. After three cycles of rice-wheat rotation, the organic matter in the soil increased with the amount of manure applied to a plot. Olsen available P increased in soils amended with poultry manure. A residual effect of poultry manure applied to rice to supply 120 or 180 kg N ha–1 was observed in the wheat which followed rice and it was equivalent to 40 kg N ha–1 plus some P applied directly to wheat.  相似文献
