We theoretically investigate the nonlinear effects in a hybrid quantum optomechanical system consisting of two optically coupled semiconductor microcavities containing a quantum dot and a Kerr nonlinear substrate.The steady-state behaviour of the mean intracavity optical field demonstrates that the system can be used as an all optical switch. We further investigate the spectrum of small fluctuations in the mechanical displacement of the movable distributed Bragg reflectors and observe that normal mode splitting takes place for high Kerr nonlinearity and pump power. In addition, we have shown that steady state of the system exhibits two possible bipartite entanglements by proper tuning of the system parameters. The entanglement results suggest that the proposed system has the potential to be used in quantum communication platform. Our work demonstrates that the Kerr-nonlinearity can effectively control the optical properties of the hybrid system, which can be used to design efficient optical devices.  相似文献

Abstract

We investigate a codirectional nonlinear coupler composed of two Kerr nonlinear waveguides. Unlike the conventional device, the linear coupling between the guides is supposed to be a variable function of the propagation distance. We calculate quantum statistical and dynamical properties of the Kerr nonlinear coupler with a coherent input and analyse the influence of coupling variation on oscillations in mean photon number. The possibility to control the switching characteristics and principal squeezing effect by adjusting the form of coupling function is shown.  相似文献

Magnetic field control over the optical switching is demonstrated for a nonlinear all-garnet magnetophotonic crystal with a microcavity (MC) layer possessing both third-order Kerr nonlinearity and magnetooptical activity. A significant enhancement of the effective refractive index of the microcavity layer is observed, that results in the light-induced spectral shift of the MC mode of 2 nm. It is shown that application of the external magnetic field leads to an increase of switching contrast by a factor of two. Possible mechanisms of photorefractive effect involved in the optical switching in all-garnet magnetophotonic crystals are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

We investigate the transient and the steady-state behaviour of the photon statistics of a single-atom laser, consisting of a three-level Λ system, driven by an incoherent external pump field and strongly coupled to a single mode of an optical cavity. For several limiting cases we are able to obtain analytical results. A comparison with standard multi-atom laser theory reveals a surprisingly good agreement down to very small intracavity photon numbers. Under appropriate operating conditions a calculation of the second-order intensity correlation function yields sub-Poissonian statistics as well as strong antibunching induced by the nonlinear dynamics of the atom.  相似文献

We theoretically analyse the optical and optomechanical nonlinearity present in a hybrid system consisting of a quantum dot(QD) coupled to an optomechanical cavity in the presence of a nonlinear Kerr medium, and show that this hybrid system can be used as an all optical switch. A high degree of control and tunability via the QD-cavity coupling strength, the Kerr and the optomechanical nonlinearity over the bistable behaviour shown by the mean intracavity optical field and the power transmission of the weak probe field can be achieved.The results obtained in this investigation has the potential to be used for designing efficient all-optical switch and high sensitive sensors for use in Telecom systems.  相似文献

Abstract

We show how the measurement induced model of quantum computation proposed by Raussendorf and Briegel (2001, Phys. Rev. Letts., 86, 5188) can be adapted to a nonlinear optical interaction. This optical implementation requires a Kerr nonlinearity, a single photon source, a single photon detector and fast feed forward. Although nondeterministic optical quantum information proposals such as that suggested by KLM (2001, Nature, 409, 46) do not require a Kerr nonlinearity they do require complex reconfigurable optical networks. The proposal in this paper has the benefit of a single static optical layout with fixed device parameters, where the algorithm is defined by the final measurement procedure.  相似文献

The fundamental possibility of achieving temperature stability of laser emitters of 1.3-μm spectral range exhibiting a vertical microcavity and an active region based on InAs/InGaAs quantum dots (QDs) is investigated. It is demonstrated that using an undoped hybrid vertical optical microcavity formed by a lower undoped semiconductor and an upper distributed dielectric Bragg reflectors allows obtaining laser oscillation up to a temperature of ~100°C at nearly constant threshold optical pump power for an active region consisting of QD layers under optimal spectral mismatch between the position of maximum gain of the QD ground state and the resonance wavelength.  相似文献

Abstract

We use a computational model to investigate the different routes by which power is lost by an optical emitter placed in a microcavity environment. We make a quantitative investigation of the 1/2n 2 model used by many workers in evaluating the fraction of power radiated from a thin film of emitting material. We show the limitations of the 1/2n 2 model, emphasizing the important role of the orientation of the dipole moment of the emitters. Multi-layer systems, involving dielectric Bragg stack reflectors and metal mirrors, are compared for their efficiency in producing useful radiation. We consider both a standard Bragg reflector and the recently developed omni-directional Bragg stack. We show that metal mirrors, although lossy, may still be effective for producing useful radiation from microcavities. We focus our attention on parameters appropriate for organic microcavity light emitting diode structures.  相似文献

Abstract

Directional nonlinear couplers composed of two Kerr nonlinear waveguides are studied. Quantum consistent solutions of the equations of motion are obtained showing the collapses and revivals of the field mode amplitudes. The approximate method is also adopted for the contradirectional geometry and the switching accompanied by collapses of the modes is revealed. Kerr couplers with varying linear coefficients are examined and possible controls of the switching of modes, for instance, digital switching and fast switching are demonstrated. The two-mode squeezing of vacuum fluctuations and the generation of pure states are shown.  相似文献

The nonlinear response to applied fields of a four-level Y-type atomic system is investigated. The effect of laser intensity and quantum interference induced by spontaneous emission on optical bistability, optical multi-stability and Kerr nonlinearity is then discussed. It is found that the threshold of the optical bistability can substantially be reduced by the quantum interference. So, an enhanced Kerr nonlinearity with reduced absorption can be achieved.  相似文献

Abstract

A fully quantum treatment of the non-degenerate optical parametric oscillator in the extreme quantum limit of small photon numbers and very high nonlinear coupling strength is presented. When the nonlinear coupling constant becomes comparable with the cavity decay rate, the sharp threshold that is usually encountered disappears, a situation reminiscent of microlasers. Furthermore the output light exhibits unusual statistical properties such as strong super-Poissonian behaviour of the pump mode for (very) large coupling constants.  相似文献

Abstract

A passive optical system is proposed to explore the intensity quantum correlation of two twin beams to reduce the photon noise of one of them. It consists of using a semiconductor medium inside an optical cavity, which behaves as a nonlinear medium presenting a crossed Kerr effect. The intensity fluctuations of one beam modify the resonance condition of the cavity for the other beam and therefore its intensity. The medium is described microscopically within the two-level atom model. It is shown that, under typical experimental conditions, this system may produce noise reduction.  相似文献

Abstract

We investigate spatial power coupling and chaotic cross-talk when beams co-propagate in multimode optical fibres, specifically among four beams that belong to two weakly degenerate mode families. The nonlinear mechanism responsible for the power and phase coupling is the optical Kerr effect in fibres. The power of each of the modes is theoretically demonstrated to be spatially unstable and chaotically dependent on launch conditions. It is shown that the spatial instabilities and irregular energy exchange occur over broad operating conditions as long as the system deviates from its spatial steady states.  相似文献

The theory for spontaneous coherence of short-lived quasiparticles in two-dimensional excitonic systems is reviewed, in particular, quantum wells (QWs) and graphene layers (GLs) embedded in microcavities. Experiments with polaritons in an optical microcavity have already shown evidence of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in the lowest quantum state in a harmonic trap. The theory of BEC and superfluidity of the microcavity excitonic polaritons in a harmonic potential trap is presented. Along the way, we determine a general method for defining the superfluid fraction in a two-dimensional trap, within the angular momentum representation. We discuss BEC of magnetoexcitonic polaritons (magnetopolaritons) in a QW and GL embedded in an optical microcavity in high magnetic field. It is shown that Rabi splitting in graphene is tunable by the external magnetic field B, while in a QW the Rabi splitting does not depend on the magnetic field in the strong B limit.  相似文献

We consider an optical and mechanical mode interacting through both linear and quadratic dispersive couplings in a general cavity-optomechanical set-up. The parity and strength of an intrinsic quadratic optomechanical coupling (QOC) provides an opportunity to control the optomechanical (OM) interaction. We quantify this interaction by studying normal-mode splitting (NMS) as a function of the QOC's strength. The proposed scheme exhibits NMS features equivalent to a hybrid-OM system containing either an optical parametric amplifier or a Kerr medium. Such a system in reality could offer an alternative platform for devising state-of-art quantum devices with requiring no extra degrees-of-freedom as in hybrid-OM systems.  相似文献

Abstract

We present a canonical quantum theory of radiation in nonlinear media taking into account the effects of linear dispersion and absorption in a consistent way. We start from a microscopic model and apply recently developed concepts of the quantization of radiation in dispersive and absorbing linear media and extend the theory in order to include nonlinear optical processes. We derive propagation equations in space and time for the quantized radiation field, with special emphasis on the propagation of quantum-light pulses in Kerr media. In particular, the method enables us to derive systematically the noise sources that arise naturally in the nonlinear terms.  相似文献

Abstract

We investigate the interaction of two counterpropagating linearly polarized waves in a dielectric waveguide grating in the presence of an intensity-dependent contribution to the refractive index (optical Kerr effect). The resulting nonlinear distributed-feedback (DFB) mechanism responsible, from a classical point of view, for a marked limiting effect which stabilizes the intensity of one of the two waves, is shown to generate, once the problem is treated in a quantum-mechanical way, a field exhibiting sub-Poissonian photon statistics.  相似文献
