IntroductionIn 2010, British Columbia (BC) introduced new traffic laws designed to deter impaired driving, speeding, and distracted driving. These laws generated significant media attention and were associated with reductions in fatal crashes and in ambulance calls and hospital admissions for road trauma.ObjectiveTo understand the extent and type of media coverage of the new traffic laws and to identify how the laws were framed by the media.MethodsWe reviewed a database of injury related news coverage (May 2010–December 2012) and extracted reports that mentioned distracted driving, impaired driving, or speeding. Articles were classified according to: (i) Type, (ii) Issue discussed, (iii) ‘Reference to new laws’, and (iv) ‘Pro/anti traffic law’. Articles mentioning the new laws were reread and common themes in how the laws were framed were identified and discussed.ResultsOver the course of the study, 1848 articles mentioned distraction, impairment, or speeding and 597 reports mentioned the new laws: 65 against, 227 neutral, and 305 supportive. Reports against the new laws framed them as unfair or as causing economic damage to the entertainment industry. Reports in favor of the new laws framed them in terms of preventing impaired driving and related trauma or of bringing justice to drinking drivers. Growing evidence of the effectiveness of the new laws generated media support.ConclusionsBC's new traffic laws generated considerable media attention both pro and con. We believe that this media attention helped inform the public of the new laws and enhanced their deterrent effect. 相似文献

Advanced green composites having excellent strength and stiffness were fabricated using liquid crystalline (LC) cellulose fibers and soy protein isolate (SPI) resin. Further, LC cellulose fibers were treated with potassium hydroxide (KOH) to improve their tensile strength and Young’s modulus by increase the crystallinity of cellulose. The improvements were significant when the treatment was carried out while keeping the fibers under tension. The Young’s modulus (stiffness) of the LC cellulose fibers increased by about 33 % from 47.8 to 63.7 GPa and the strength increased by about 18 % from 1483 MPa to 1749 MPa. X-ray diffraction (XRD) study of the LC cellulose fibers showed over 50 % increase in crystallinity after the KOH treatment. The mechanical properties of the LC cellulose fiber-reinforced composites were also high and improved further when the KOH treated fibers were used. With 65 % fiber volume it should be possible to obtain composites with strength above 1020 MPa and modulus of over 37 GPa, making them truly advanced green composites that could be used for structural applications. 相似文献

A nanostructured Hf11Ni89 ribbon sample was prepared by melt-spinning. It was found that the as-quenched sample is composed of a major HfNi5 compound nanophase and an interfacial magnetic Ni(Hf) solid solution phase. The structure evolution of the sample was studied by using X-ray difFraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), difFerential scanning calorimetry (DSC), resistivity and magnetothermal analysis. Upon heating, a second precipitation process of the Ni(Hf) phase prior to grain growth wa5 detected by means of both structural analysis and physical property measurements. The Mg65Cu25Y10 melts were quenched at a temperature of 973 K under various pressures in the range of 2-5 GPa and ambient pressure. The microstructure of the solidified specimens has been investigated by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope and electron probe microanalysis. Experimental results show that the pressure has a great influence on the solidification microstructure of the Mg65Cu25Y10. At ambient pressure, the solidification products are Mg2(Cu,Y) and a very small amount of Y2O3 inclusion. As the pressure is above 2 GPa, a new Cu2(Y,Mg) phase appears, while Y2O3 is not observed at the pressure of 3, 4 and 5 GPa. When the pressure increases from 2 GPa to 5 GPa, the grain sizes of Mg2(Cu,Y) and Cu2(Y,Mg) decrease from 125, 96 nm to 80, 7 nm, respectively. The mechanisms for the effects of the pressure on the phase evolution and microstructure during solidification process of Mg65Cu25Y10 alloy have been discussed. 相似文献
