The commercial polymers poly(ethylene imine) (PEI), poly(ethylene imine epichlorohydrin), and poly(dimethylamine‐co‐epichlorohydrin) were purified and fractionated by ultrafiltration. Their metal‐ion‐binding properties with respect to different ligand groups and the effect of the concentration on the retention properties were investigated. The amine ligands of the polymers formed the most stable complexes with the metal ions. In general, there was an effect of the pH and polymer fraction size on the retention properties. As the pH and polymer fraction size increased, the affinity to bind metal ions also increased. PEI had the highest metal‐retention values, particularly at higher pHs, at which the amine groups were nonprotonated and could coordinate easily with the metal ions. Only Pb(II) was poorly retained. The affinity for all the metal ions, except Pb(II), increased significantly at pH 5. The metal‐ion retention decreased quickly as the filtration factor increased, except for Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cd(II), and Zn(II) ions, which were retained by over 40% at a filtration factor of 4. For other metal ions such as Pb(II), Ca(II), and Mg(II), only 10% remained bound to the polymer. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 96: 222–231, 2005  相似文献

The free‐radical copolymerization of water‐soluble poly(1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone‐co‐hydroxyethylmethacrylate) was carried out with a feed monomer ratio of 75:25 mol %, and the total monomer concentration was 2.67M. The synthesis of the copolymer was carried out in dioxane at 70°C with benzoyl peroxide as the initiator. The copolymer composition was obtained with elemental analysis and 1H‐NMR spectroscopy. The water‐soluble polymer was characterized with elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared, 1H‐ and 13C‐NMR spectroscopy, and thermal analysis. Additionally, viscosimetric measurements of the copolymer were performed. The thermal behavior of the copolymer and its complexes were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry techniques under a nitrogen atmosphere. The copolymer showed high thermal stability and a glass transition in the DSC curves. The separation of various metal ions by the water‐soluble poly(1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone‐co‐hydroxyethylmethacrylate) reagent in the aqueous phase with liquid‐phase polymer‐based retention was investigated. The method was based on the retention of inorganic ions by this polymer in a membrane filtration cell and subsequent separation of low‐molar‐mass species from the polymer/metal‐ion complex formed. Poly(1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone‐co‐hydroxyethylmethacrylate) could bind metal ions such as Cr(III), Co(II), Zn(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), and Fe(III) in aqueous solutions at pHs 3, 5, and 7. The retention percentage for all the metal ions in the polymer was increased at pH 7, at which the maximum retention capacity could be observed. The interaction of inorganic ions with the hydrophilic polymer was determined as a function of the pH and filtration factor. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The macromonomer polyethylene glycol methylether methacrylate was homo‐ and copolymerized with 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methyl‐1‐propane sulfonic acid under three feed monomer ratios. The initiator used was ammonium peroxydisulfate (0.2 mol %). All the polymers were completely soluble in water. The copolymer composition was determined by elemental analysis. The metal ion interaction capability of the three polymers was investigated through the liquid‐phase polymer‐based retention (LPR) technique at different values of pH and filtration factor Z. The highest metal ion retention ability was observed at pH 5.0. The homopolymer showed a high selectivity for Ni(II) ions at pH 3.0. The copolymers (PEGMEM)1.51co‐(APSA)1.00 and (PEGMEM)1.00co‐(APSA)1.95 showed a high selectivity for Cr(III) ions at pH 3.0. The maximum retention capacity, in general, was similar for the homo‐ and copolymers. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 92: 2955–2960, 2004  相似文献

The water‐insoluble resin poly(2‐acrylamido‐2‐methyl‐1‐propanosulfonic acid‐co‐4‐vinyl pyridine), through a radical polymerization solution, was synthesized with ammonium persulfate as an initiator and N,N‐methylene bisacrylamide as a crosslinking reagent. The metal‐ion‐retention properties were studied by batch and column equilibrium procedures for the following metal ions: Hg(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), Pb(II), and Cr(III). These properties were investigated under competitive and noncompetitive conditions. The effects of the pH, maximum retention capacity, and regeneration capacity were studied. The resin showed a high retention ability for Hg(II) ions at pH 2.0. The retention of Hg(II) ions from a mixture of ions was greater than 90%. The resin showed a high selectivity for Hg(II) with respect to other metal ions. The Hg(II)‐loaded resin was able to be recovered with 4M HClO4. The retention capacity was kept after four cycles of adsorption and desorption. The retention properties for Hg(II) were very similar with the batch and column methods. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(2‐acrylamido glycolic acid‐co‐2‐acrylamido‐2‐methyl‐1‐propane sulfonic acid) [P(AGA‐co‐APSA)] was synthesized by radical polymerization in an aqueous solution. The water‐soluble polymer, containing secondary amide, hydroxyl, carboxylic, and sulfonic acid groups, was investigated, in view of their metal‐ion‐binding properties, as a polychelatogen with the liquid‐phase polymer‐based retention technique under different experimental conditions. The investigated metal ions were Ag+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, and Cr3+, and these were studied at pHs 3, 5, and 7. P(AGA‐co‐APSA) showed efficient retention of all metal ions at the pHs studied, with a minimum of 60% for Co(II) at pH 3 and a maximum close to 100% at pH 7 for all metal ions. The maximum retention capacity (n metal ion/n polymer) ranged from 0.22 for Cd2+ to 0.34 for Ag+. The antibacterial activity of Ag+, Cu2+, Zn2+, and Cd2+ polymer–metal complexes was studied, and P(AGA‐co‐APSA)–Cd2+ presented selective antibacterial activity for Staphylococcus aureus with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 2 μg/mL. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. p‐Chlorophenylmaleimide and p‐hydroxyphenylmaleimide with 2‐hydroxypropyl methacrylate were synthesized by radical polymerization, and the metal ion retention capacity and thermal behavior of the copolymers were evaluated. The copolymers were obtained by solution radical polymerization with a 0.50 : 0.50 feed monomer ratio. The maximum retention capacity (MRC) for the removal of two metal ions, Co(II) and Ni(II) in aqueous phase were determined using the liquid‐phase polymer based retention technique. Inorganic ion interactions with the hydrophilic polymer were determined as a function of pH. The metal ion retention capacity does not depend strongly on the pH. Metal ion retention increased with an increase of pH for a copolymer composition 0.50 : 0.50. At different pH, the MRC of the poly(p‐chlorophenylmaleimide‐co‐2‐hydroxypropylmethacrylate) for Co(II) and Ni(II) ions varied from 44.1 to 48.6 mg/g and from 41.5 mg/g to 46.0 mg/g, respectively; while the MRC of poly(p‐hydroxyphenylmaleimide‐co‐2‐hydroxypropyl methacrylate) for Co(II) and Ni(II) ions varied from 28.4 to 35.6 mg/g and from 27.2 to 30.8 mg/g, respectively. The copolymers and copolymer–metal complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, FT‐IR, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and thermal behavior. The thermal behavior of the copolymer and polymer–metal complexes were studied using differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry techniques under nitrogen atmosphere. The thermal decomposition temperature and Tg were influenced by the binding‐metal ion on the copolymer. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 2007  相似文献

The retention of various metal ions by water‐soluble poly(4‐vinylpyridine) methyl iodide in conjunction with ultrafiltration membrane was investigated. The method is based on the retention of inorganic ions by this polymer in a membrane filtration cell and subsequent separation of low‐molecular weight species from the polymer metal ion complex formed. It is shown that the polychelatogen can bind silver(I) and mercury(II) ions in aqueous solution at pH 1. At higher pH, the water‐soluble polymer can be applied to the separation and preconcentration of silver metal ions. Therefore, this polychelatogen is highly selective to Hg(II) at pH 1 with respect to metal ions such as Cd(II) and Zn(II). © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A water‐insoluble polymer, poly(sodium 4‐styrene sulfonate), was synthesized by radical polymerization at different amounts (2, 4, 6, and 8 mol %) of crosslinking reagent (CR). At the lowest CR level (2 mol %), only a water‐soluble polymer is obtained, and consequently it could not be studied as resin. The polymerization yield ranged from 82.6 to 91.6%. The resin is characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, thermal analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The metal ion affinity is studied for the cations: Hg(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), Pb(II), Cr(III), and Al(III) with a batch equilibrium procedure under different experimental conditions. The metal ion affinity increased as the pH increased. At pH 5, the resin showed an affinity greater than 97% for all metal ions. Hg(II) showed the highest retention value at pH 2. The maximum retention capacity is determined at optimum pH for Hg(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), and Zn(II). © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 101: 4328–4333, 2006  相似文献

The water‐soluble polymers poly(styrene sulfonic acid‐co‐maleic acid) and poly(acrylic acid‐co‐maleic acid) were investigated with respect to their metal‐ion‐binding ability with ultrafiltration. The studied metal ions included Ag(I), Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Ca(II), Mg(II), Pb(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), Al(III), and Cr(III) ions. The retention properties of the polyelectrolytes for the metal ions depended strongly on the ligand type. As for the carboxylate ligands, with increasing concentration and pH, the metal‐binding affinity increased. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 95: 1091–1099, 2005  相似文献

Poly[(2‐hydroxyethyl)‐DL ‐aspartamide] was synthesized by polyreaction of aspartic acid and subsequent polymer‐analogous functionalization with ethanolamine. The water‐soluble polymer was characterized by FTIR, NMR, TGA and light‐scattering measurements. The metal complexing properties of the polymer were studied for Cr(III), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Sr(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions in aqueous solution using the liquid‐phase polymer‐based retention (LPR) method. According to the retention profiles of LPR, Cr(III), Fe(III), Cu(II) and Pb(II) showed a strong interaction with this polymer under these conditions, indicated by retention values of about 100 %. In contrast, Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Sr(II) and Cd(II) exhibited retention values of only 50–60 % in dilute solution at pH 5. © 2000 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The crosslinked poly[3‐(methacryloylamino)propyl]dimethyl(3‐sulfopropyl)ammonium hydroxide], P(MAPDSA), and poly[3‐(methacryloylamino)propyl]dimethyl(3‐sulfopropyl)ammonium hydroxide‐co‐acrylic acid], P(MAPDSA‐co‐AA), were synthesized by radical polymerization. The resins were completely insoluble in water. Due to the lower metal ion retention of P(MAPDSA), the metal ions investigated under competitive and noncompetitive conditions for Cu(II), Cd(II), Hg(II), Zn(II), Pb(II), and Cr(III) ions by batch and column equilibrium procedures were carried out only for P(MAPDA‐co‐AA), particularly for Hg(II). The resin–Hg(II) ion equilibrium was achieved before 15 min. The resin showed a maximum retention capacity value for Hg(II) at pH 2 of 1.89 meq/g. The resin showed a high selectivity to Hg(II) ions. The recovery of the resin was investigated at 25°C with different concentrations of HNO3 and HClO4. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 98: 525–530, 2005  相似文献

Radical copolymerizations of 1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone with acrylamide and N,N′‐dimethylacrylamide at different feed ratios were investigated. The copolymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The copolymer composition was determined from the 1H NMR spectra and found to be statistical. The metal complexation of poly(acrylamide‐co‐1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone) and poly(N,N′‐dimethylacrylamide‐co‐1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone) for the metal ions Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), Pb(II), Fe(III), and Cr(III) were investigated in an aqueous phase. The liquid‐phase polymer‐based retention method is based on the retention of inorganic ions by soluble polymers in a membrane filtration cell and subsequent separation of low‐molecular compounds from the polymer complex formed. The metal ion interaction with the hydrophilic polymers was determined as a function of the pH and the filtration factor. Poly(N,N‐dimethylacrylamide‐co‐1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone) showed a higher affinity for the metal ions than poly(acrylamide‐co‐1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone). According to the interaction pattern obtained, Cr(III) and Cu(II) formed the most stable complexes at pH 7. Pb(II) and Zn(II) were not retained. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(2‐acrylamido‐2‐methyl‐1‐propanesulfonic acid), poly(methacrylic acid), and five copolymers of poly[(2‐acrylamido‐2‐methyl‐1‐propanesulfonic acid)‐co‐(methacrylic acid)] were synthesized by radical polymerization and obtained in yields >97%. The polymers were characterized by FT‐IR, [1H]NMR, and [13C]NMR and studied by means of the Liquid‐phase Polymer‐based Retention (LPR) technique. The metal ion retention ability of the copolymers for Cu(II), Cd(II), Co(II), Hg(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Cr(III) and Ag(I) was investigated at different pH values because of their environmental and analytical interest. The retention profiles of the copolymers were compared with those of the corresponding homopolymers and retention of metal ions was found to increase with increasing pH. © 2001 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Metal‐chelating membranes have advantages as adsorbents in comparison with conventional beads because they are not compressible and they eliminate internal diffusion limitations. The aim of this study was to explore in detail the performance of poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate–methacryloylamidohistidine) [poly(HEMA–MAH)] membranes for the removal of three toxic heavy‐metal ions—Cd(II), Pb(II), and Hg(II)—from aquatic systems. The poly(HEMA–MAH) membranes were characterized with scanning electron microscopy and 1H‐NMR spectroscopy. The adsorption capacity of the poly(HEMA–MAH) membranes for the selected heavy‐metal ions from aqueous media containing different amounts of these ions (30–500 mg/L) and at different pH values (3.0–7.0) was investigated. The adsorption capacity of the membranes increased with time during the first 60 min and then leveled off toward the equilibrium adsorption. The maximum amounts of the heavy‐metal ions adsorbed were 8.2, 31.5, and 23.2 mg/g for Cd(II), Pb(II), and Hg(II), respectively. The competitive adsorption of the metal ions was also studied. When the metal ions competed, the adsorbed amounts were 2.9 mg of Cd(II)/g, 14.8 mg of Pb(II)/g, and 9.4 mg of Hg(II)/g. The poly(HEMA–MAH) membranes could be regenerated via washing with a solution of nitric acid (0.01M). The desorption ratio was as high as 97%. These membranes were suitable for repeated use for more than three adsorption/desorption cycles with negligible loss in the adsorption capacity. The stability constants for the metal‐ion/2‐methacryloylamidohistidine complexes were calculated to be 3.47 × 106, 7.75 × 107, and 2.01 × 107 L/mol for Cd(II), Pb(II), and Hg(II) ions, respectively, with the Ruzic method. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Catalase‐like activity of the metal complexes of various crosslinked polystyrene‐supported Schiff bases were carried out and correlated with the nature and degree of crosslinking in the polymer support. Polystyrenes with 2–20 mol % ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA), 1,4‐butanediol dimethacrylate (BDDMA) and 1,6‐hexanediol diacrylate (HDODA) were used as polymer supports. functions of diethylenetriamine and salicylaldehyde were incorporated to the chloromethylpolystyrene by polymer analogous reactions and complexed with Fe(II), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) ions. The metal uptake decreased in the order: Cu(II) > Co(II) > Ni(II) > Fe(III) > Fe(II), and extent of metal uptake by the various crosslinked system varied with the nature and degree of the crosslinking agent. The polymeric ligands and the metal complexes were characterized by various analytical techniques. The catalytic activities of these metal complexes were investigated towards the decomposition reaction of hydrogen peroxide. Generally among the various metal complexes, the catalytic activities decreased in the order: Co(II) > Cu(II) > Ni(II) > Fe(III) ? Fe(II). With increasing rigidity of the crosslinking agent their catalytic activity also decreased. Of the various crosslinked systems, the catalytic activity decreased in the order: HDODA‐ > BDDMA‐ > EGDMA‐crosslinked system. Also, the catalytic activity is higher for low crosslinked systems and decreased further with increasing degree of crosslinking. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 1,4,8,11‐Tetraazacyclotetradecane (cyclam) was reacted with acryloyl chloride in a 1 : 2 molar ratio in dichloromethane in the presence of pyridine at 0°C. The modified cyclam was polymerized by adding an azobisisobutyronitrile initiator and irradiated with a UV lamp under reflux for 6 h. Precipitated cyclam containing polymer in the bulk structure was removed from the suspension by filtration. After washing and drying the final polymeric materials were used for transition metal ion adsorption and desorption studies. A Fourier transform IR spectrophotometer and thermogravimetric analyzer were used to characterize the polymeric structure. The affinity of the polymeric material for transition metal ions was used to test the adsorption–desorption of selected ions [Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Cd(II), Pb(II)] from aqueous media containing different amounts of these metal ions (5–800 ppm) at different pH values (2.0–8.0). It was found that the adsorption rates were high and the adsorption equilibrium was reached in about 30 min. The uptake of the transition metal ions onto the polymer from solutions containing a single metal ion was 3.17 mmol/g for Cu(II), 0.98 mmol/g for Cd(II), 0.79 mmol/g for Co(II), 0.78 mmol/g for Ni(II), and 0.32 mmol/g for Pb(II). This polymer showed high affinity for Cu(II) compared to the other metal ions in the single ion solution and in the mixture of transition metal ions. The affinity order of the transition metal ions was Cu(II) ? Ni(II) > Cd(II) > Co(II) > Pb(II) for competitive adsorption. More than 95% of the adsorbed transition metal ions were desorbed in 2 h in a desorption medium containing 1.0M HNO3. Poly(cyclam) was found to be suitable for repeated use of more than five cycles without a noticeable loss of adsorption capacity. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Metal chelating properties of Cibacron Blue F3GA‐derived poly(EGDMA‐HEMA) microbeads have been studied. Poly(EGDMA‐HEMA) microbeads were prepared by suspension copolymerization of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) and hydroxy‐ethyl methacrylate (HEMA) by using poly(vinyl alcohol), benzoyl peroxide, and toluene as the stabilizer, the initiator, and the pore‐former, respectively. Cibacron Blue F3GA was covalently attached to the microbeads via the nucleophilic substitution reaction between the chloride of its triazine ring and the hydroxyl groups of the HEMA, under alkaline conditions. Microbeads (150–200 μm in diameter) with a swelling ratio of 55%, and carrying 16.5 μmol Cibacron Blue F3GA/g polymer were used in the adsorption/desorption studies. Adsorption capacity of the microbeads for the selected metal ions, i.e., Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Fe(III), and Pb(II) were investigated in aqueous media containing different amounts of these ions (5–200 ppm) and at different pH values (2.0–7.0). The maximum adsorptions of metal ions onto the Cibacron Blue F3GA‐derived microbeads were 0.19 mmol/g for Cu(II), 0.34 mmol/g for Zn(II), 0.40 mmol/g for Cd(II), 0.91 mmol/g for Fe(III), and 1.05 mmol/g for Pb(II). Desorption of metal ions were studied by using 0.1 M HNO3. High desorption ratios (up to 97%) were observed in all cases. Repeated adsorption/desorption operations showed the feasibility of repeated use of this novel sorbent system. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 71: 1397–1403, 1999  相似文献

The metal‐ion complexation behavior and catalytic activity of 4 mol % N,N′‐methylene bisacrylamide crosslinked poly(acrylic acid) were investigated. The polymeric ligand was prepared by solution polymerization. The metal‐ion complexation was studied with Cr(III), Mn(II), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) ions. The metal uptake followed the order: Cu(II) > Cr(III) > Mn(II) > Co(II) > Fe(III) > Zn(II) > Ni(II). The polymeric ligand and the metal complexes were characterized by various spectral methods. The catalytic activity of the metal complexes were investigated toward the hydrolysis of p‐nitrophenyl acetate (NPA). The Co(II) complexes exhibited high catalytic activity. The kinetics of catalysis was first order. The hydrolysis was controlled by pH, time, amount of catalyst, and temperature. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 92: 272–279, 2004  相似文献
