The nanocomposites of nitrile–butadiene rubber (NBR) and organo‐montmorillonite modified by hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (HMMT) were prepared by the reactive mixing intercalation method in the presence of the resorcinol and hexamethylenetetramine complex (RH). The structure of the NBR–RH–HMMT nanocomposites was characterized by XRD, TEM, FTIR, determination of crosslinking density, and so on. The results showed that the d‐spacing of HMMT increased substantially with RH addition and the layers of HMMT were dispersed in rubber matrix on a nanometer scale. The mechanical properties of the NBR–RH–HMMT nanocomposites were far superior to those of NBR–HMMT composites, and the glass transition temperature of NBR–RH–HMMT nanocomposite was higher than that of NBR. The reactive mixing intercalation method by introducing RH could enhance the interface combination between the rubber and the organoclay through the interactions of RH with NBR and modified clay. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Clay was modified by trimethylchlorosilane; after modification, hydroxyl groups at the edge of layers were reacted and CEC value was drastically decreased. Polyethylene–clay composites were prepared by melt compounding. Wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that intercalated nanocomposites were formed using organoclay ion‐exchanged from chlorosilane‐modified clay, but conventional composites formed using organoclay directly ion‐exchanged from crude clay. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) of PE and PE–clay composites was conducted; the results demonstrated that nanocomposites were more effective than conventional composites in reinforcement and addition of organoclay resulted in the increase of glass transition temperature (Tg), but crude clay had no effect on Tg of PE–clay composites. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(glycidyl methacrylate)/Na–montmorillonite nanocomposites were synthesized by free‐radical polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate containing dispersed montmorillonite. By changing the concentration of glycidyl methacrylate several polymer–clay nanocomposites were prepared and the resulting nanocomposites were characterized by X‐ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The results indicated that the properties of the composite were significantly improved. The thermogravimetric analysis results revealed that the degradation temperatures of nanocomposites were higher than that of pure polymer and the thermal degradation rates decreased. Examination of these materials by scanning electron microscopy showed that the clay layers are dispersed homogenously in the polymer matrix and the formation of intercalation nanostructure. Furthermore, adsorptive, moisture regain, and water uptake properties of nanocomposites were also investigated. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 94: 1532–1538, 2004  相似文献

Vinylbenzyl chloride was allowed to react with a low‐molecular‐weight oligomer of butadiene in order to give a material that could then be used to alkylate an amine to form an ammonium salt. This ammonium salt was ion‐exchanged onto a clay to give a new organically modified clay, which was used to prepare polystyrene‐clay nanocomposites by solution and bulk polymerization and by melt blending. The nanocomposites were characterized by using X‐ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, cone calorimetry, and the evaluation of mechanical properties. These systems show good nanodispersion and improvement in thermal and mechanical properties. J. Vinyl Addit. Technol. 10:44–51, 2004. © 2004 Society of Plastics Engineers.  相似文献

Various fluorinated polymers were investigated to produce polymer nanocomposites with special clays. Natural and organically treated montmorillonite clays were melt‐compounded with the polymers. Characterization by wide‐angle X‐ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy showed the separation of montmorillonite layers and the formation of polymer nanocomposites. Organically treated montmorillonite clay dispersed in poly(vinylidene fluoride) and various vinylidene fluoride copolymers and formed nanocomposites. Natural and organophilic clays were not well dispersed in other fluorinated copolymers and polyethylene. A correlation was developed for the formation of polymer–clay nanocomposite structures in chlorinated and fluorinated polymers in terms of the dielectric constant. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The main objective of this study was to synthesize and characterize the properties of ethylene–propylene–diene terpolymer (EPDM)/clay nanocomposites. Pristine clay, sodium montmorillonite (Na+–MMT), was intercalated with hexadecyl ammonium ion to form modified organoclay (16Me–MMT) and the effect of intercalation toward the change in interlayer spacing of the silicate layers was studied by X‐ray diffraction, which showed that the increase in interlayer spacing in Na+–MMT by 0.61 nm is attributed to the intercalation of hexadecyl ammonium ion within the clay layers. In the case of EPDM/16Me–MMT nanocomposites, the basal reflection peak was shifted toward a higher angle. However, gallery height remained more or less the same for different EPDM nanocomposites with organoclay content up to 8 wt %. The nanostructure of EPDM/clay composites was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, which established the coexistence of intercalated and exfoliated clay layers with an average layer thickness in the nanometer range within the EPDM matrix. The significant improvement in thermal stability and mechanical properties reflects the high‐performance nanocomposite formation. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Ethylene propylene rubber–clay nanocomposites (EPR–CNs) were prepared by melt‐compounding maleic anhydride modified EPR (EPR‐MA) with organophilic clay, and their properties were examined. Silicate layers of organophilic clay were found to exfoliate and homogeneously disperse into the nanometer level in the nanocomposites by transmission electron microscopy observation. EPR–CNs exhibited higher tensile moduli compared to EPR‐MA and composites containing conventional fillers such as carbon black, talc. The storage moduli of EPR–CNs were also higher than those of EPR‐MA and the conventional composites. Creep resistances of EPR–CNs were much improved compared for EPR‐MA. Degree of swelling in hexadecane was remarkably restricted. Improvement of these properties is caused because dispersed silicate layers have much large interface with the EPR matrix and are thought to strongly restrain the EPR polymer chains. Nanocomposite technology using small amount of silicate layers is useful to improve properties of thermoplastic elastomer. Various kinds of thermoplastic elastomers are expected to be produced by loading of silicate layers with or without conventional fillers. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Star‐shaped and linear block thermoplastic poly(styrene‐b‐butadiene) copolymer (SBS)/organophilic montmorillonite clays (OMMT) were prepared by a solution approach. The intercalation spacing in the nanocomposites and the degree of dispersion of nanocomposites were investigated by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. The mechanical properties, dynamic mechanical properties, and thermal stability of these nanocomposites were determined. Results showed that SBS chains were well intercalated into the clay galleries and an intercalated nanocomposite was obtained. The mechanical strength of nanocomposites with the star‐shaped SBS/OMMT were significantly increased. The addition of OMMT also gave an increase of the elongation, the dynamic storage modulus, the dynamic loss modulus, and the thermal stability of nanocomposites. The increase of the elongation of nanocomposites indicates that SBS has retained good elasticity. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 92: 3430–3434, 2004  相似文献

Soybean oil‐based polymer nanocomposites were synthesized from acrylated epoxidized soybean oil (AESO) combined with styrene monomer and montmorillonite (MMT) clay by using in situ free radical polymerization reaction. Special attention was paid to the modification of MMT clay, which was carried out by methacryl‐functionalized and quaternized derivative of methyl oleate intercalant. It was synthesized from olive oil triglyceride, as a renewable intercalant. The resultant nanocomposites were characterized by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The effect of increased nanofiller loading in thermal and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The nanocomposites exhibited improved thermal and dynamic mechanical properties compared with neat acrylated epoxidized soybean oil based polymer matrix. The desired exfoliated nanocomposite structure was achieved when the OrgMMT loading was 1 and 2 wt % whereas partially exfoliated nanocomposite was obtained in 3 wt % loading. It was found that about 400 and 500% increments in storage modulus at glass transition and rubbery regions, respectively were achieved at 2 wt % clay loading compared to neat polymer matrix while the lowest thermal degradation rate was gained by introducing 3 wt % clay loading. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Rubber‐based nanocomposites were prepared with octadecyl amine modified sodium montmorillonite clay and styrene–butadiene rubber with different styrene contents (15, 23, and 40%). The solvent used to prepare the nanocomposites, the cure conditions, and the cure system were also varied to determine their effect on the properties of the nanocomposites. All the composites were characterized with X‐ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The XRD studies revealed exfoliation for the modified clay–rubber composites. The TEM photomicrographs showed a uniform distribution of the modified clay in the rubber matrix. The thickness of the particles in the exfoliated composites was around 10–15 nm. Although the FTIR study of the unmodified and modified clays showed extra peaks due to the intercalation of the amine chains into the gallery, the spectra for the rubber–clay nanocomposites were almost the same because of the presence of a very small amount of clay in the rubber matrix. All the modified clay–rubber nanocomposites displayed improved mechanical strength. The styrene content of the rubber had a pronounced effect on the properties of the nanocomposites. With increasing styrene content, the improvement in the properties was greater. Dicumyl peroxide and sulfur cure systems displayed similar strength, but higher elongation and slightly lower modulus values were obtained with the sulfur cure system. The curing of the samples at four different durations at 160°C showed that the cure time affected the properties. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 92: 698–709, 2004  相似文献

The tensile and impact properties of amine‐cured diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A based nanocomposites reinforced by organomontmorillonite clay nanoplatelets are reported. The sonication processing scheme involved the sonication of the constituent materials in a solvent followed by solvent extraction to generate nanocomposites with homogeneous dispersions of the organoclay nanoplatelets. The microstructure of the clay nanoplatelets in the nanocomposites was observed with transmission electron microscopy, and the clay nanoplatelets were well dispersed and were intercalated and exfoliated. The tensile modulus of epoxy at room temperature, which was above the glass‐transition temperature of the nanocomposites, increased approximately 50% with the addition of 10 wt % (6.0 vol %) clay nanoplatelets. The reinforcing effect of the organoclay nanoplatelets was examined with respect to the Tandon–Weng and Halpin–Tsai models. The tensile strength was improved only when 2.5 wt % clay nanoplatelets were added. The Izod impact strength decreased with increasing clay content. The failure surfaces of the nanocomposites were observed with environmental scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy. The roughness of the failure surface was correlated with the tensile strength. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 96: 281–287, 2005  相似文献

Nitrile rubber (NBR)–clay nanocomposites were prepared by co‐coagulating the NBR latex and clay aqueous suspension. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the silicate layers of clay were dispersed in the NBR matrix at the nano level and had a planar orientation. X‐ray diffraction indicated that there were some nonexfoliated silicate layers in the NBR–clay nanocomposites. Stress–strain curves showed that the silicate layers generated evident reinforcement, modulus, and tensile strength of the NBR–clay nanocomposites, which were significantly improved with an increase in the amount of clay, and strain‐at‐break was higher than that of the gum NBR vulcanizate when the amount of clay was more than 5 phr. The NBR–clay nanocomposites exhibited an excellent gas barrier property; the reduction in gas permeability in the NBR–clay nanocomposites can be described by Nielsen's model. Compared with gum NBR vulcanizate, the oxygen index of the NBR–clay nanocomposites increased slightly. The feasibility of controlling rubber flammability via the nanocomposite approach needs to be evaluated further. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 89: 3855–3858, 2003  相似文献

Nanocomposites of eugenol‐based polybenzoxazines/amine containing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) have been prepared through copolymerization of allyl‐containing benzoxazine compounds and amine containing POSS. Their structures, curing behaviour, and thermomechanical properties were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, 1H‐NMR, 13C‐NMR, X‐ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The nanoscale dispersion of POSS cores in the nanocomposites was verified by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy studies. The results from DMA and TGA show that the thermal stability, crosslink density and flame retardance of the nanocomposites increased when small amounts of POSS cores (5 wt%) were incorporated into the system. Further the POSS incorporation reduces the dielectric constant of the benzoxazines to about 1.32. Hence, the prepared nanocomposites could be used as ultra‐low‐k materials for advanced microelectronics. POLYM. COMPOS., 36:1973–1982, 2015. © 2014 Society of Plastics Engineer  相似文献

Epoxy–clay nanocomposites were prepared by the dispersion of an organically modified layered clay in an epoxy resin (diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A) and curing in the presence of methyl tetrahydro acid anhydride at 80–160°C. The nanometer‐scale dispersion of layered clay within the crosslinked epoxy‐resin matrix was confirmed by X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, and the basal spacing of the silicate layer was greater than 100–150 Å. Experiments indicated that the hydroxyethyl groups of the alkyl ammonium ions, which were located in the galleries of organically modified clay, participated in the curing reaction and were directly linked to the epoxy‐resin matrix network. Experimental results showed that the properties of epoxy were improved, evidently because of the loading of organically modified clay. The impact strength and tensile strength of the nanocomposites increased by 87.8 and 20.9%, respectively, when 3 wt % organic clay was loaded, and this demonstrated that the composites were toughened and strengthened. The thermal‐decomposition and heat‐distortion temperatures were heightened in comparison with those of pure epoxy resin, and so were the dynamic mechanical properties, including the storage modulus and glass‐transition temperature. Moreover, experiments showed that most properties of the composites were ameliorated with low clay contents. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 91: 2649–2652, 2004  相似文献

Dicyanate–clay nanocomposites comprising a dicyanate resin and a type of organically modified clay were prepared and characterized, and their thermomechanical properties were investigated. The organically modified clay had silicate layers of nanometer size intercalated with an organic modifier, which improved the compatibility between the clay and organic materials, such as dicyanate resins. Dynamic mechanical analysis was performed to investigate the thermomechanical properties of the dicyanate–clay nanocomposites containing various amounts of the clay. The storage modulus of the nanocomposites below their glass‐transition temperatures slightly increased with increasing clay content. The glass‐transition temperature of the dicyanate–clay nanocomposites increased with increasing clay content. The nanostructures of the dicyanate–clay nanocomposites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and X‐ray diffraction analysis. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. PVC/Na+–montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites were prepared via a simple technique of emulsion polymerization at several different MMT clay concentrations. X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies revealed the formation of a mixture of intercalated and exfoliated nanostructure. Tensile testing results showed that the tensile modulus of the nanocomposites increased with the addition of clay, while the tensile strength decreased little. The notched impact strength of the nanocomposites was also improved. For systems containing clay in the range of 2.1 to 3.5 wt %, the impact strength was almost two times as large as that of pure PVC. However, those mechanical properties began to decrease with the continuously increasing amount of clay. The fracture surface of pure PVC and the nanocomposites was observed by scanning electron microscope. Thermal properties of the nanocomposites were found to increase as a result of clay incorporation. The glass transition temperatures of the PVC/clay nanocomposites were nearly identical to that of pure PVC. The Vicat softening points exhibited a progressively increasing trend with the clay content added. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 94: 277–286, 2004  相似文献

Ethylene–vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers/clay nanocomposites, prepared by using nonreactive organophilic clay and reactive organophilic clay, were characterized by X‐ray diffraction and by high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy. The influence of gamma irradiation on the structure and properties of the pure EVA and EVA/clay nanocomposites was systematically investigated. In the presence of gamma radiation, the clay can effectively restrain the increase of the storage modulus of EVA/clay nanocomposites, which was supported by dynamical mechanical analysis. Gamma irradiation had almost no effect on the thermal properties of EVA/clay nanocomposites by using nonreactive organophilic clay, but it obviously improved the thermal stability of EVA/clay nanocomposites by using reactive organophilic clay. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel process using ultrasonics to enhance the exfoliation and dispersion of clay platelets in polypropylene‐based nanocomposites has been proposed and investigated. The materials studied were isotactic polypropylene of various molecular weights reinforced with organophilic montmorillonite clay (nanoclay) at 4–6 wt% loadings. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and rheological measurements, on a model system of nanoclay in mineral oil, were first used to determine ultrasonic energy requirements. The effectiveness of the proposed ultrasonic processing technique on polypropylene nanocomposites was evaluated by XRD and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The effects of added maleic anhydride–grafted polypropylene compatibilizer, polypropylene molecular weight, and pretreatment of the nanoclays on the nanocomposite exfoliation were also investigated. Results indicate that ultrasonic processing of polymer nanocomposites in the melt state is an effective method for improving exfoliation and dispersion of nanoclays. Issues regarding molecular weight degradation, optimization, mechanical properties, and continuous processing are beyond the scope of the present study and are currently being investigated in our laboratory. A series of polymer–clay nanocomposite (PCN) materials consisting of 1,4‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy)‐2‐tert‐butylbenzene–4,4′‐oxydiphthalic anhydride (BATB–ODPA) polyimide (PI) and layered montmorillonite (MMT) clay were successfully prepared by an in situ polymerization reaction through thermal imidization up to 300°C. The synthesized PCN materials were subsequently characterized by Fourier‐Transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, wide‐angle powder X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The effects of material composition on thermal stability, mechanical strength, molecular permeability and optical clarity of bulk PI and PCN materials in the form of membranes were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), molecular permeability analysis (GPA) and ultraviolet‐visible (UV/VIS) transmission spectra, respectively. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel process for the preparation of poly(propylene)/montmorillonite (PP/MMT) nanocomposites was developed via simultaneous solution grafting‐intercalation in the presence of a reactive ammonium cation that can be grafted onto poly(propylene). Partially introducing this reactive cation into long alkyl ammonium modified MMT interlayers can transfer a conventional microcomposite into intercalated/exfoliated nanocomposites, which was evidenced by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The PP chains were tethered onto the clay surface through the bridge of the reactive ammonium cations, which can be characterized by FTIR. The bridged chemical bonding also results in a good interface adhesion between PP and MMT, as confirmed by SEM investigation. The enhanced thermal properties of PP/MMT nanocomposites were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 94: 1018–1023, 2004  相似文献
