This article presents an approach to delivering qualitative end-to-end quality of service (QoS) guarantees across the multiprovider Internet. We propose that bilateral agreements between a number of autonomous systems (ASs) result in the establishment of QoS-class planes that potentially extend across the global Internet. The deployment of a QoS-enhanced border gateway protocol (BGP) with different QoS-based route selection policies in each of the planes allows a range of interdomain QoS capabilities to coexist on the same network infrastructure. The article presents simulation results showing the benefits of the approach and discusses aspects of the performance of QoS-enhanced BGP  相似文献

EuQoS is the acronym for "end-to-end quality of service support over heterogeneous networks", which is a European research project aimed at building an entire QoS framework, addressing all the relevant network layers, protocols, and technologies. This framework, which includes the most common access networks (xDSL, UMTS, WiFi, and LAN) is being prototyped and tested in a multidomain scenario throughout Europe, composing what we call the EuQoS system. In this article we present the novel QoS routing mechanisms that are being developed and evaluated in the framework of this project. The preliminary performance results validate the design choices of the EuQoS system, and confirm the potential impact this project is likely to have in the near future  相似文献

This article reviews routing algorithms in heterogeneous wireless networks with the goal of including QoS awareness. After a general overview of the issues and challenges of QoS provisioning over heterogeneous networks, classic routing strategies are revisited, and how they can be exploited to achieve QoS efficiency is discussed. In particular, for the considered scenarios our proposal is to account for some proactivity in the routing algorithms, as well as a QoS-driven control selection, which are shown to improve throughput, delay, and energy consumption. Recently, many overlay applications have emerged in the Internet. Currently, each of these applications requires their proprietary functionality support. A general unified framework may be a desirable alternative to application-specific overlays. We introduce the concept of overlay brokers (OBs). We assume that each autonomous system in the Internet has one or more OBs. These OBs cooperate with each other to form an overlay service network (OSN) and provide overlay service support for overlay applications, such as resource allocation and negotiation, overlay routing, topology discovery, and other functionalities. The scope of our effort is the support of quality-of-service (QoS) in overlay networks. Our primary focus is on the design of QoS-aware routing protocols for overlay networks (QRONs). The goal of QRON is to find a QoS-satisfied overlay path, while trying to balance the overlay traffic among the OBs and the overlay links in the OSN. A subset of OBs, connected by the overlay paths, can form an application specific overlay network for an overlay application. The proposed QRON algorithm adopts a hierarchical methodology that enhances its scalability. We analyze two different types of path selection algorithms. We have simulated the protocols based on the transit-stub topologies produced by GT-ITM. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms perform well in providing a QoS-aware overlay routing service.  相似文献

分析了异构的网络模型,并提出了一种基于MANET稳定闭域的混合路由策略,使得基于该路由策略设计的路由协议能够实时地根据本地拓扑状态进行转换,在稳定闭域内使用AODV提高路由转发的效率。当数据分组转发到闭域边界后,将转换为改进的Prophet路由继续在非连通区域内寻路,以充分利用MANET与DTN路由的优势。仿真实验证明了该路由策略的可行性,通过比较多种路由算法验证了在特定的异构网络环境下该路由策略的高效性。  相似文献

In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), clustering can significantly reduce energy dissipation of nodes, and also increase communication load of cluster heads. When multi-hop communication model is adopted in clustering, “energy hole” problem may occur due to unbalanced energy consumption among cluster heads. Recently, many multi-hop clustering protocols have been proposed to solve this problem. And the main way is using unequal clustering to control the size of clusters. However, many of these protocols are about homogeneous networks and few are about heterogeneous networks. In this paper, we present an unequal cluster-based routing scheme for WSNs with multi-level energy heterogeneity called UCR-H. The sensor field is partitioned into a number of equal-size rectangular units. We first calculate the number of clusters in each unit by balancing energy consumption among the cluster heads in different units. And then we find the optimal number of units by minimizing the total energy consumption of inter-cluster forwarding. Finally, the size of clusters in each unit is elaborately designed based on node’s energy level and the number of clusters in this unit. And a threshold is also designed to avoid excessive punishment to the nodes with higher energy level. Simulation results show that our scheme effectively mitigates the “energy hole” problem and achieves an obvious improvement on the network lifetime.  相似文献

Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSNs) have attracted attention from academics and industries due to many applications such as pollution monitoring, military, tsunami warning, and underwater exploration. One of the effective factors in these applications is efficient communication between underwater sensors. But this process is very challenging in UWSNs due to special conditions and underwater harsh environments. Therefore, designing routing protocols for efficient communication between sensors and sink is an important issue in UWSNs. In this context, this paper proposed a location-free Reliable and QoS-Aware Routing (RQAR) protocol for mobile sink UWSNs. RQAR designed using Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) and does not require the position information of the sensor nodes, which is cumbersome and difficult to obtain. Proposed protocol considers multiple parameters including link quality, hop count, congestion, and residual energy for qos support, and reliable data delivery RQAR also minimizes the effects of hole occurrence by increasing the transmission range as much as possible and ensures communication stability. The simulation results using NS2 showed the superiority of RQAR in improving end-to-end delay, packet delivery ratio, and network throughput compared to the previous methods.  相似文献

A Flexible QoS-aware Service Gateway for Heterogeneous Wireless Networks   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The integration of different types of wireless access networks, or heterogeneous wireless networks (HWN), is emerging. This article investigates in particular how a combination of UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) cellular networks, wireless LAN ad hoc networks, and DVB-H (digital video broadcasting - handheld) broadcasting networks, called UWD networks for short, is constructed and managed to provide users with QoS-aware services. Given the complexity of the UWD networks, a novel policy-based service gateway is proposed. As a software framework sitting over and communicating with the UWD network, this UWD service gateway makes network management decision by reasoning over a set of predefined policies that describe the behaviors of the UWD network. Network variables such as bandwidth, delay, and mobility in policies are fuzzified using fuzzy control theory to make the service gateway (as well as the whole UWD network) more flexible and robust. To accommodate real-time multimedia application while satisfying application QoS requirements in a wireless ad-hoc network, we need QoS control mechanisms. In this paper, we propose a new routing mechanism to support real-time multimedia communication by efficiently utilize the limited wireless network capacity. Our mechanism considers a wireless ad-hoc network composed of nodes equipped with multiple network interfaces to each of which a different wireless channel can be assigned. By embedding information about channel usage in control messages of OLSRv2, each node obtains a view of topology and bandwidth information of the whole network. Based on the obtained information, a source node determines a logical path with the maximum available bandwidth to satisfy application QoS requirements. Through simulation experiments, we confirmed that our proposal effectively routed multimedia packets over a logical path avoiding congested links. As a result, the load on a network is well distributed and the network can accommodate more sessions than QOLSR. We also conducted practical experiments using wireless ad-hoc relay nodes with four network interfaces and verified the practicality of our proposal.  相似文献

Service-oriented wireless mesh networks have recently been receiving intensive attention as a pivotal component to implement the concept of ubiquitous computing due to their easy and cost-effective deployment. To deliver a variety of services to subscriber stations, a large volume of traffic is exchanged via mesh routers in the mesh backbone network. One of the critical problems in service-oriented wireless mesh networks is to improve the network throughput. Wireless network coding is a key technology to improve network throughput in multihop wireless networks since it can exploit not only the broadcast nature of the wireless channel, but also the native physical-layer coding ability by mixing simultaneously arriving radio waves at relay nodes. We first analyze the throughput improvement obtained by wireless network coding schemes in wireless mesh networks. Then we develop a heuristic joint link scheduling, channel assignment, and routing algorithm that can improve the network throughput for service-oriented wireless mesh networks. Our extensive simulations show that wireless network coding schemes can improve network throughput by 34 percent.  相似文献

Mobile ad hoc networks are collections of mobile nodes that can dynamically form temporary networks without the need for pre-existing network infrastructure or centralized administration. These nodes can be arbitrarily located and can move freely at any given time. Hence, the network topology can change rapidly and unpredictably. Because wireless link capacities are usually limited, congestion is possible in MANETs. Hence, balancing the load in a MANET is important since nodes with high loads will deplete their batteries quickly, thereby increasing the probability of disconnecting or partitioning the network. This article discusses the various load metrics and summarizes the principles behind several existing load balanced ad hoc routing protocols. Finally, a qualitative comparison of the various load metrics and load balanced routing protocols is presented.  相似文献

In this paper, we have studied a number of algorithms for routing in all-optical wavelength routed networks. We have considered situations where a lightpath is dynamically created in response to a request for communication and the WDM channels constituting the lightpath are reclaimed when the communication is over. We have looked at two schemes for dynamic wavelength allocation. In the first scheme we have assumed the existence of a central agent to maintain a database of existing lightpaths where the central agent attempts to generate a new lightpath in response to a request for communication. In the second scheme, we attempt to generate a new lightpath using a distributed algorithm. In the first scheme we have exploited the existence of multiple paths between any pair of nodes in a network in order to reduce the blocking probability. For the second scheme, we have proposed three distributed strategies to determine, if possible, a lightpath when there is a request for communication. Each of these strategies have their advantages and disadvantages in terms of the expected blocking probability and the set-up time. We have studied the performances of both the schemes using Monte Carlo simulation.  相似文献

Routing protocols for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) have been explored extensively in recent years. Much of this work is targeted at finding a feasible route from a source to a destination without considering current network traffic or application requirements. Therefore, the network may easily become overloaded with too much traffic and the application has no way to improve its performance under a given network traffic condition. While this may be acceptable for data transfer, many real-time applications require quality-of-service (QoS) support from the network. We believe that such QoS support can be achieved by either finding a route to satisfy the application requirements or offering network feedback to the application when the requirements cannot be met. We propose a QoS-aware routing protocol that incorporates an admission control scheme and a feedback scheme to meet the QoS requirements of real-time applications. The novel part of this QoS-aware routing protocol is the use of the approximate bandwidth estimation to react to network traffic. Our approach implements these schemes by using two bandwidth estimation methods to find the residual bandwidth available at each node to support new streams. We simulate our QoS-aware routing protocol for nodes running the IEEE 802.11 medium access control. Results of our experiments show that the packet delivery ratio increases greatly, and packet delay and energy dissipation decrease significantly, while the overall end-to-end throughput is not impacted, compared with routing protocols that do not provide QoS support.  相似文献

Wireless local-area networks (WLANs) based on the IEEE 802.11 technology have been widely adopted for private use over the past few years. However, several issues remain concerns for large-scale deployment in corporate environments. Enforcing security and quality-of-service (QoS) has become a fundamental challenge to managing IEEE 802.11-based enterprise networks. In order to provide corporate networks with a global management solution, we have designed a service-oriented management system that enables user-centric service provisioning, while enforcing security and QoS requirements. As enterprises may be comprised of a number of distinct networks, we have extended our system to support the roaming of users between different enterprise sites. In this paper, we describe the design, implementation, and performance evaluation of our solution.  相似文献
