A fatigue prediction approach is proposed using fracture mechanics for laser beam welded Al-alloy joints under stationary variable amplitude loading. The proposed approach was based on the constant crack open stress intensity factor in each loading block for stationary variable amplitude loading. The influence of welding residual stress on fatigue life under stationary variable amplitude was taken into account by the change of crack open stress intensity factor in each loading block. The residual stress relaxation coefficient β = 0.5 was proposed to consider the residual stress relaxation for the laser beam welded Al-alloy joints during the fatigue crack growth process. Fatigue life prediction results showed that a very good agreement between experimental and estimated results was obtained.  相似文献

Fatigue crack growth in materials that display confined slip show crack path changes that are dependant on the loading history. In these materials certain variable amplitude loading patterns can produce strong slip bands ahead of the crack tip. One of these patterns of loadings involving bands of high R cycles followed by one or two underloads also produce distinct features or progression marks on the fracture surface that have been used to delimit small blocks of constant amplitude cycles. The same loading pattern also produces strong slip bands ahead of the fatigue crack both in the plane of the crack and out of plane. These slip bands affect the direction and possibly the rate of propagation of the fatigue crack. Thus these loading patterns make an ideal marker to look at small crack growth rates in the presence of slip bands. This paper reports on the crack growth rates for a series of fatigue cracks grown in AA7050-T7451 coupons, from near initiation to near failure. The aim of this work was to generate constant amplitude crack growth data for use in predictions that is more useful for predicting crack growth lives than that obtained from long crack constant amplitude tests. Three simple sequences which applied small bands of constant amplitude loading were used in the fatigue tests preceded by a loading sequence to produce a progression mark to delimit the bands. The fatigue cracks in the coupon initiated from etch pits on the surface of the coupons. The width of the bands of constant amplitude growth in these sequences were measured under a microscope. The growth in these sequences was found to be faster than for long cracks under constant amplitude loading.  相似文献

Controlling macro residual stress fields in a material while preserving a desired microstructure is often a challenging proposition. Processing techniques which induce or reduce residual stresses often also alter microstructural characteristics of the material through thermo-mechanical processes. A novel mechanical technique able to generate controlled residual stresses was developed. The method is based on a pin compression approach, and was used to produce well-controlled magnitudes and distributions of residual stresses in rectangular coupons and compact tension specimens typically used in fatigue crack growth testing. Residual stresses created through this method were first computationally modeled with finite element analysis, and then experimentally reproduced with various levels of pin compression. The magnitudes and distributions of residual stresses in experimental specimens were independently assessed with fracture mechanics methods and good correspondence was found between residual stresses produced using the pin compression and processing techniques. Fatigue crack growth data generated from specimens with low residual stresses, high residual stresses resulting from processing, and high residual stresses introduced through the new pin compression technique were compared and validated. The developed method is proposed to facilitate the acquisition and analysis of fatigue crack growth data generated in residual stresses, validate residual stress corrective models, and verify fatigue crack growth simulations and life predictions in the presence of residual stresses.  相似文献

Plasticity-induced crack closure is an observed phenomenon during fatigue crack growth. However, accurate determination of fatigue crack closure has been a complex task for years. It has been approached by means of experimental and numerical methods. The finite element method (FEM) has been the principal numerical tool employed. In this paper the results of a broad study of fatigue crack closure in plane stress and plane strain by means of FEM are presented. The effect of three principal factors has been analysed in depth, the maximum load, the crack length and the stress ratio. It has been found that the results are independent of maximum load and the crack length, and there exists a direct influence of the stress ratio. This relation has been numerically correlated and compared with experimental results. Differences have also been established between opening and closure points and between the different criteria employed to compute crack closure.  相似文献

Measuring opening or closure stress is a complex process that influences the low accuracy of obtained data. Finite element models have been one of the available ways to deal with this problem. The difficulty of modelling the whole process of crack growth (due to the great number of cycles implied) as the great complexity of the phenomenon itself (with a high plastic strain concentrated in a small area, with elevated stress gradients) has made the results to be quite varied, being influenced by a great number of modelling parameters. Of those parameters, the minimum size of the element used to mesh the area around the crack tip vicinity presents a great influence on the results. In this work, a detailed analysis of the influence of this parameter in the results in terms of closure or opening stress is presented. The effect that different meshing criteria can have on the result is complex and it has been necessary to reduce the element size around the crack tip to a size that had not been reached before. Procedures and modelling criteria stricter than the ones shown in the current bibliography are proposed. A methodology for the correct interpretation of the results is also established.  相似文献

Corrosive environment causes corrosion pits at material surface and reduces the fatigue strength significantly. Fatigue crack usually initiates at and propagates from these locations. In this paper, a general methodology for fatigue life prediction for corroded specimens is proposed. The proposed methodology combines an asymptotic stress intensity factor solution and a power law corrosion pit growth function for fatigue life prediction of corroded specimens. First, a previously developed asymptotic interpolation method is proposed to calculate the stress intensity factor (SIF) for the crack at notch roots. Next, a growing semi-circular notch is assumed to exist on the specimen’s surface under corrosive environments. The notch growth rate is different under different corrosion conditions and is assumed to be a power function. Fatigue life can be predicted using the crack growth analysis assuming a crack propagating from the notch root. Plasticity correction is included into the proposed methodology for medium-to-low cycle fatigue analysis. The proposed methodology is validated using experimental fatigue life testing data of aluminum alloys and steels. Very good agreement is observed between experimental observations and model predictions.  相似文献

Load ratio effects are of prime concern when modeling of fatigue crack growth (FCG) rate is required as a prerequisite for a reliable life prediction. The majority of research efforts regarding the load ratio effects are based on Elber's ΔKeff approach. However, there are intrinsic difficulties encountered with its consistent application to FCG prediction. In this paper two popular crack-growth-life prediction codes FASTRAN and AFGROW are modified utilizing the enhanced partial crack closure model. The proposed utilization aggregates apparent closure mechanisms involved and demonstrates a better correlation and a significant scatter reduction of FCG data taken from literature, especially in the near-threshold region.  相似文献

Fatigue crack growth experiments were performed on surface cracked tensile specimens of Inconel 718 at 400 °C. The loading was carried out at constant as well as at variable amplitude. The experimental results for the mean growth rate were compared with predictions based on data obtained from testing of compact tension specimens. Both nominal data as well as data corrected from measured crack closure were used in the predictions. The corrected data provided much better predictions than the nominal ones indicating that the level of crack closure during the testing of the surface cracked specimens was much lower than in compact tension specimens.  相似文献

Railway axles, though designed for infinite life, are subject to failure due to various types of surface damage (ballast hits, corrosion) that might occur during their very long service life (30 years or 107 km). This problem is dealt with by regular axle examinations in the form of nondestructive testing inspections, whose periodicity is calculated on the basis of the propagation lifetime of a given initial defect. The key point is therefore a reliable estimation of propagation lifetime under service loads. This paper discusses the application of predictive crack growth algorithms to the propagations of cracks in A1N steel axles. In particular, constant amplitude crack propagation tests on small-scale and “companion specimens” were carried out together with experiments on full-scale axles. Variable amplitude tests on companion specimens were performed and the results were then analysed using a simple “no-interaction” algorithm. Then, variable amplitude tests on companion specimens and the analysis of results with a simple “no-interaction” algorithm and the Strip-Yield model were dealt with. The results showed a negligible load-interaction effect on “companion specimens” and a significant retardation on full-scale axles. The consequences resulting from the application of predictive models to a full-scale axle under service spectrum were then analysed.  相似文献

The propagation of fatigue cracks in specimens subjected to variable amplitude loading under plane strain conditions was investigated experimentally and numerically, to find the influence of the variable amplitude loading on the stabilised crack closure level. Experiments on four-point-bend specimens with a Gurney block load scheme, showed that the crack closure level depends on the crack length but not on the stress range of the fluctuations. Numerical simulations performed in the fatigue crack growth program FASTRAN-II showed good agreement with the experimental results. In addition, statistical uncertainty analyses performed on the fatigue life show that, for technical applications, the uncertainties in initial crack length and load levels have a greater influence on the uncertainty in fatigue life, than the fluctuation level of the load.  相似文献

The contact of the cracked surfaces during a part of a loading cycle generally results in a reduced crack growth rate. A critical experiment was designed to evaluate the influence of the crack surface contact on crack growth. A round compact specimen made of 1070 steel with a round hole at the wake of the fatigue crack was designed. Two mating wedges were inserted into the hole of the specimen while the external load was kept at its maximum in a loading cycle. In this way, the wedges and the hole in the specimen were in firm contact during the entire loading cycle in the subsequent loading. Experiments showed that the addition of the wedges resulted in a reduction of crack growth rate in the subsequent constant amplitude loading. However, crack growth did not arrest. With the increase in the subsequent loading cycles, crack growth rate increased. The traditional crack closure concept cannot explain the experimental phenomenon because the effective stress intensity factor range was zero after the insertion of the wedges. The detailed stress–strain responses of the material near the crack tip were analyzed by using the finite element method with the implementation of a robust cyclic plasticity theory. A multiaxial fatigue criterion was used to determine the fatigue damage based upon the detailed stresses and strains. The crack growth was simulated and the predicted results were in good agreement with the experimental observations. It was confirmed that the stresses and strains near the crack tip governed cracking behavior. Crack surface contact reduced the crack tip cyclic plasticity and the result was the observed retardation in crack growth.  相似文献

Fatigue crack propagation tests were performed using specimens with multiple parallel edge notches at regular intervals. Fatigue pre-cracks of uniform length were successfully introduced by eccentric tension-compression loading. Fatigue crack propagation tests were carried out under four-points bending loading. Obtained crack propagation behavior was simulated by using newly developed stress intensity factor equations for multiple parallel edge cracks with alternately different lengths. Simulated results showed a good agreement with the experiment for specimens with relatively broad crack intervals, while for specimens with narrow crack intervals showed a different tendency from the experiment when crack lengths became long.  相似文献

The fatigue process near crack is governed by highly concentrated strain and stress in the crack tip region. Based on the theory of elastic–plastic fracture mechanics, we explore the cyclic J-integral as breakthrough point, an analytical model is presented in this paper to determine the CTOD for cracked component subjected to cyclic axial in-plane loading. A simple fracture mechanism based model for fatigue crack growth assumes a linear correlation between the cyclic crack tip opening displacement (ΔCTOD) and the crack growth rate (da/dN). In order to validate the model and to calibrate the model parameters, the low cycle fatigue crack propagation experiment was carried out for CT specimen made of Q345 steel. The effects of stress ratio and crack closure on fatigue crack growth were investigated by elastic–plastic finite element stress–strain analysis of a cracked component. A good comparison has been found between predictions and experimental results, which shows that the crack opening displacement is able to characterize the crack tip state at large scale yielding constant amplitude fatigue crack growth.  相似文献

A single Mode II load cycle, large enough to create residual displacements, decreases the subsequent Mode I crack growth rate. The distance for Mode I crack growth rate to fully recover, i.e., revert to the same da/dN as before Mode II load, is much longer than Mode II plastic zone size. The higher Mode II load, the larger is the reduction in growth rate and the longer the recovery distance. Higher Mode I R-ratio means smaller reduction in growth rate. Above a certain R-ratio, no reduction occurs at all. In the present study it is found that the reduction in growth rate is solely caused by crack closure due to tangential displacement of crack-surface irregularities that induce a surface mismatch between the upper and lower crack faces. The mechanism is called Mode II-induced crack closure. A model based on both analytical and experimental results is developed in order to estimate the degree of Mode II-induced crack closure after a Mode II load.  相似文献

A short crack model originally proposed for multiaxial constant amplitude loading is extended and applied to multiaxial variable amplitude loading. Load sequences have a significant influence on variable amplitude life; they are taken into account using algorithms originally proposed only for uniaxial loading. The estimated fatigue lives of unnotched tubular specimens and notched shafts under different in- and out-of-phase multiaxial constant and variable amplitude load histories are compared with the experimental results. The comparison reveals that the proposed short crack approach enables sufficiently accurate estimation. Moreover, the estimated critical planes, i.e., the planes of maximum crack growth rate or minimum life, are in good agreement with the experimental observations.  相似文献

Being restricted by the relative larger size requirement, traditional and standard fracture specimens are not applicable for the estimation of fatigue crack growth behavior of some very finite-sized components and precious materials. This study develops a small-sized C-shaped inside edge-notched tension (CIET) specimen which has an advantage of specimen minimization and a wide range of adaptability. A systemic compliance technique for estimating fatigue crack growth behavior of CIET specimen has been successfully constructed and experimentally verified. Groups of fatigue crack propagation rate tests of both CIET specimen and CT specimen for 5083-H112 aluminum alloy were carried out. The resulted da/dN  ΔK curves are heavy affected by specimen configuration and load ratio, and the difference between these da/dN  ΔK curves has been successfully removed by introducing the correction of plasticity-induced crack closure effect. Consequently, the feasibility of CIET specimen for estimating fatigue crack propagation behavior for small-sized components and precious materials has been evidently confirmed.  相似文献

Time derivative equations for mode I fatigue crack growth in metals   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Predicting fatigue crack growth in metals remains a difficult task since the available models based on the Paris law are cycle-derivative equations (da/dN), while service loads are often far from being cyclic. This imposes a cycle-reconstruction of the load sequence, which significantly modifies the load history in the signal. The main objective of this paper is therefore to propose a set of time-derivative equations for fatigue crack growth in order to avoid any cycle reconstruction. The model is based on the thermodynamics of dissipative processes. Its main originality lies in the introduction of a supplementary state variable for the crack, which allows describing continuously the state of the crack throughout any complex load sequence. The state of the crack is considered to be fully characterized at the global scale by its length a, its plastic blunting ρ, and its elastic opening. In the equations, special attention is paid to the elastic energy stored inside the crack tip plastic zone, since, in practice, residual stresses at the crack tip are known to considerably influence fatigue crack growth. The model consists finally in two laws: a crack propagation law, which is a relationship between dρ/dt and da/dt and which observes the inequality stemming from the inequality of Clausius Duhem, and an elastic–plastic constitutive behaviour for the cracked structure, which provides dρ/dt versus load and which stems from the energy balance equation. The model was implemented and tested. It successfully reproduces the main features of fatigue crack growth as reported in the literature, such as the Paris law, the stress ratio effect, and the overload retardation effect.  相似文献

Titanium-graphite hybrid composite laminates exhibit a coupled damage growth mode of facesheet cracking and delamination. Part I of this work modeled the growth of the coupled damage mode. Fatigue experiments were conducted on single edge notch tension specimens to measure the crack growth rate. This paper compares the model predictions with experimental data. The three-dimensional finite element model successfully captured the damage growth behavior for two of the lay-ups ([Ti/0/90/02]s and [Ti/90/0/902]s) in the experimental program. However, in a third lay-up, [Ti/0/90/±30]s, the underlying damage modes were found to be sufficiently different than the other two lay-ups and the model did not capture the steady-state growth behavior. The effects of temperature and specimen size were also investigated for TiGr laminates. Except for the effects of the load ratio, elevated temperatures did not affect the crack growth rate significantly. For wider specimens, the steady-state fatigue crack growth behavior was similar to the narrow specimens, indicating that the steady-state facesheet crack growth behavior is independent of specimen size.  相似文献
