AbstractThe effect of maleic anhydride (MA) modification of jute fibre on the mechanical properties of jute/polypropylene (PP) composites was studied. Jute fibre, an environmental friendly, low-density renewable material was chemically modified with MA before the incorporation with PP to improve interfacial adhesion between them. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) study showed that the C=C groups of MA attached to jute cellulose reacted with the PP matrix. Jute fibre/PP composite treated with MA displayed higher Young's modulus and dynamic storage modulus owing to the enhanced interfacial adhesion between the fibre and PP matrix. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study showed evidence of the enhanced adhesion and bridging in the interfacial region of the composite as the result of MA modification of jute fibre. 相似文献

The adhesion of Alcaligenes denitrificans to several polymeric materials was investigated. As the nature of the surfaces of the micro-organisms and the substrate materials is an important factor in the adhesion process, characteristics such as the electrokinetic potential and hydrophobicity were also determined and correlated with the capacity of bacterial cells to adhere to solid surfaces. The substrates used were high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). The electrokinetic potential of the cells and the substrates was determined by measurements of electrophoretic mobility and the hydrophobicity was determined by contact angle measurements. All the substrates studied as well as the bacterial strain have a negative zeta potential, which means that adhesion is not mediated by electrostatic interactions. As far as hydrophobicity is concerned, PP is the most hydrophobic material, PMMA is the least hydrophobic, whereas HDPE and PVC present an intermediate behavior. As bacteria cells are hydrophilic, adhesion is favored to PP; therefore, this substrate material seems to be the one that promotes a stronger adhesion and the development of the most stable biofilm for use as a biomass carrier in denitrifying inverse fluidized bed reactors. This was confirmed by the results of adhesion tests. In this way, adhesion seems to be dominated by hydrophobic interactions. 相似文献

The effects of 248 nm KrF excimer laser irradiation on a pressure-sensitive adhesive tape bonded to a glass substrate were investigated as a possible method to evaluate the quality of adhesion, as well as the directionality induced during manufacture. The model pressure-sensitive tape consisted of biaxially-oriented polypropylene (PP) tape coated with a hot-melt rubber resin. Analysis of the front-shot experiments, which were performed by irradiation through the PP backing, allowed correlation between the excimer laser irradiation-induced detachment and the peel adhesion strength. For this purpose, peel tests were performed before and after laser shots. The directionality induced during manufacture resulted in a more ablated area in the strength direction than in the transverse direction when the bonded tapes were irradiated with an elliptically-shaped laser beam above the ablation threshold. A correlation was found between the detachment bubbles created by irradiation below the ablation threshold and their respective peel adhesion values, which allows us to evaluate the quality of adhesion for pressure-sensitive tapes. Thus, a method to evaluate the quality of adhesion using an excimer laser is proposed based on the findings of this work. 相似文献

This publication is based on research work done on functional phenol‐modified polypropylenes (PPs) as adhesion promoters in glass fiber–reinforced PP composites. The glass fiber roving was first impregnated with different combinations of functional polymers and polypropylene in a melt impregnation die attached to an extruder to obtain prepreg. The prepreg was then tested in many ways both macro‐ and micromechanically. The tests included notched tensile tests, optical and electron microscopy, and DMTA (dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer) and DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) analyses as well as determination of the glass content. The tests were run on prepregs containing pure PP, PP with a commercial adhesion promoter, and PP with a number of functional, mostly phenol‐based, polymers. Also, single‐fiber tests were performed on individual glass fibers to test the level of adhesion with the above‐mentioned material combinations. With these tests it could be seen that some of the phenol‐based functional polymers provided the prepreg with better adhesion between the fibers and the matrix than did the commercial adhesion promoter. Optical and electron microscopy also were used in determining the level of adhesion as well as the deformation and fracture mechanisms of the prepreg. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Ultrafine full‐vulcanized polybutadiene rubber (UFBR) in particle sizes of ca. 50–100 nm has been used for modifying mechanical and processing performances of polypropylene (PP), and PP‐g‐maleic anhydride (PP‐MA) has been used as a compatibilizer for enhancing the interfacial adhesion between the two components. The results show that PP/UFBR possesses rheological behaviors such as highly branched PP when UFBR content in blends reaches 10 wt%, while in contrast, the much low content of UFBR combining small amount of PP‐MA endows the material with rheological characteristics of high melt strength materials like highly branched PP. The mechanism accounting for the rheological behaviors of binary blends and effectiveness of PP‐MA on PP/UFBR blends has been proposed. POLYM. ENG. In some technical areas, mainly in the automotive industry, glass fiber reinforced polymers are intended to be replaced by natural fiber reinforced polymer systems. Therefore, higher requirements will be imposed to the physical fiber properties, fiber‐matrix adhesion, and the quality assurance. To improve the properties of epoxy resins (EP) and polypropylene (PP) composites, flax and hemp fibers were modified by mercerization and MAH‐PP coupling agent was used for preparing the PP composites. The effects of different mercerization parameters such as concentration of alkali (NaOH), temperature, and duration time along with tensile stress applied to the fibers on the structure and properties of hemp fibers were studied and judged via the cellulose I–II lattice conversion. It was observed that the mechanical properties of the fibers can be controlled in a broad range by using appropriate mercerization parameters. Unidirectional EP composites were manufactured by the filament winding technique; at the PP matrix material, a combination with a film‐stacking technique was used. The influence of mercerization parameters on the properties of EP composites was studied with hemp yarn as an example. Different macromechanical effects are shown at hemp‐ and flax‐PP model composites with mercerized, MAH‐PP‐treated, or MAH‐PP‐treated mercerized yarns.
