Crosslinked hydrogels comprising acrylamide (AAm) and maleic acid (MA) were synthesized by free radical polymerization in presence of a crosslinker using ammonium persulfate (APS) and N,N,N1,N1-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) as initiator and activator, respectively. The crosslinked hydrogel formation was confirmed by IR analysis. The swelling/de-swelling characteristics were studied in detail for crosslinked poly(acrylamide-co-maleic acid) [poly(AAM-co-MA)] hydrogels containing different amounts of maleic acid. Four different crosslinkers such as 1,2-ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA), 1,4-butanediol diacrylate (BDDA), 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA), and diallyl phthalate (DP) were utilized to study their influence on the swelling behavior of the hydrogels. The effect of reaction parameters such as the concentration of crosslinker and initiator on swelling capacity of the crosslinked poly(AAm-co-MA) hydrogels was also investigated. Further, the influence of various salts, simulated biological fluids, and pH solutions on the swelling pattern of hydrogels was studied extensively. Phase separation morphology of crosslinked hydrogels was also studied by differential scanning calorimetry. The morphology of crosslinked hydrogels were revealed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM).  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Hydrogels based on acrylamide (AAM) and potassium methacrylate (KMA) were synthesized by simultaneous free radical polymerization in aqueous solution using the redox initiator ammonium persulfate (APS) and N,N,N′N′-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) at room temperature. Eight different compositions of KMA hydrogels were prepared at a fixed concentration of N,N′,-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) or diallyl phthalate (DP) as crosslinking agents. For all the AAM-KMA hydrogels, the percentage of swelling, swelling kinetics, and diffusion characteristics were investigated. It was found that higher swelling percentage values were obtained for hydrogels crosslinked with DP than for the conventional crosslinker MBA. The de-swelling characteristics of hydrogels were also studied in detail. The power law relationship of hydrogels was evaluated in saline solutions. Hydrogels formation was confirmed by IR spectroscopy. The thermal characteristics of these hydrogels were studied by using differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and revealed that MBA crosslinked AAM-KMA hydrogels show higher glass transition temperature (Tg) as well as higher decomposition temperatures (Td) than DP crosslinked AAM-KMA hydrogels. It is further confirmed from the studies that the DP crosslinked hydrogels have good swelling as well as de-swelling and salinity characteristics.  相似文献

pH‐sensitive poly(N,N‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) hydrogels were synthesized by free‐radical crosslinking polymerization using two different crosslinking agents; tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGMA) and N,N′‐methylenebis(acrylamide) (BAAm). The influence of the polymerization factors such as the type of the crosslinking agent and the gel preparation concentration on the swelling behavior, the gel strength, the effective crosslinking density and the average chain length between the crosslink points for the resulting hydrogels was investigated. The results of the equilibrium swelling measurements in water showed that the linear swelling ratio of the resulting hydrogels increases with increasing gel preparation concentration. The swelling ratio of PDMAEMA hydrogels crosslinked with BAAm is larger than those for hydrogels crosslinked with TEGMA over the entire range of the polymer network concentration. The hydrogels exhibit very sharp pH‐sensitive phase transition in a very narrow range of pH between 7.7 and 8.0. From the mechanical measurements, it was also found that the linear swelling ratio of resulting hydrogels depends on the crosslinking density and also the type of the crosslinker used in the preparation. The resulting hydrogels are thought to be good candidates for pH‐sensitive drug delivery systems. POLYM. ENG. SCI. 2013. © 2012 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

Interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(acrylamide‐co‐sodium methacrylate) poly(AAm‐co‐SMA) were prepared by the semi IPN method. These IPN hydrogels were prepared by polymerizing aqueous solution of acrylamide and sodium methacrylate, using ammonium persulphate/N,N,N1,N1‐tetramethylethylenediamine (APS/TMEDA) initiating system and N,N1‐methylene‐bisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker in the presence of a host polymer, poly(vinyl alcohol). The influence of reaction conditions, such as the concentration of PVA, sodium methacrylate, crosslinker, initiator, and reaction temperature, on the swelling behavior of these IPNs was investigated in detail. The results showed that the IPN hydrogels exhibited different swelling behavior as the reaction conditions varied. To verify the structural difference in the IPN hydrogels, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to identify the morphological changes in the IPN as the concentration of crosslinker varied. In addition to MBA, two other crosslinkers were also employed in the preparation of IPNs to illustrate the difference in their swelling phenomena. The swelling kinetics, equilibrium water content, and water transport mechanism of all the IPN hydrogels were investigated. IPN hydrogels being ionic in nature, the swelling behavior was significantly affected by environmental conditions, such as temperature, ionic strength, and pH of the swelling medium. Further, their swelling behavior was also examined in different physiological bio‐fluids. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 98: 302–314, 2005  相似文献

In this study the poly(acrylamide‐co‐maleic acid) hydrogels containing small amounts of maleic acid have been synthesized, and the effect of pH, ionic strength, and nature of counterions on the equilibrium water uptake has been investigated. The incorporation of small amount of maleic acid results in the transition of swelling mechanism from Fickian to non‐Fickian. The equilibrium mass swelling has been found to increase with pH of the swelling medium while increase in ionic strength causes a decrease in the swelling. The amount of maleic acid present in the hydrogel affects the swelling behavior in rather an unusual way. With lower acid contents, the equilibrium mass swelling increases while higher concentrations of maleic acid cause a decrease in the degree of swelling. The hydrogels have been found to undergo a number of swelling–deswelling cycles when pH of the swelling medium changes from 8.0 to 2.0. Hydrogels require more time to deswell compared to the time required for swelling, which has been explained on the basis of the fact that gels follow different mechanisms for the two processes. Various swelling parameters such as equilibrium mass swelling, diffusion coefficient, intrinsic diffusion coefficient, swelling exponent, etc., have been evaluated. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Nonionic hydrogels bearing glucoside residues were synthesized by free-radical copolymerization of glucosylethyl methacrylate (GEMA) and N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide (BisA) at 0°C for 2 h using ammonium peroxodisulfate and N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine as the initiator. The cross-linked polymer gel was obtained quantitatively. The nonionic gels absorbed 30 times as much water as their own weight. Copolymerization of GEMA, sodium acrylate, and BisA gave anionic hydrogels, which absorbed ca. 100 times as much water as their own weight at pH 6.5. The swelling behavior of the nonionic and the anionic hydrogels bearing glucose residues was studied in detail. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Swelling and adsorption properties of poly(hydroxamic acid), (PHA) hydrogels in aqueous solutions of some phenazine dyes such as Neutral Red, Safranin T, and Janus Green have been investigated. PHA hydrogels containing N,N′ methylenebisacrylamide or ethyleneglycoldimethacrylate were used in experiments on swelling, diffusion and adsorption of the dyes. The equilibrium swelling (Seq) values of PHA hydrogels in aqueous solutions of the phenazine dyes were calculated as 2.16–33.25 g g?1. Swelling kinetic parameters such as initial swelling rate, swelling rate constant, and maximum swelling were found. Dye diffusion into hydrogels was found to be non‐Fickian in character. Diffusion coefficients are ranged 1.32 × 10?6 cm2 s?1 ? 44.70 × 10?6 cm2 s?1. Adsorption of the phenazine dyes onto PHA hydrogels was studied by batch technique. PHA hydrogels in the phenazine dye solutions showed the dark coloration. The data was found that Freundlich isotherm model fits. According the Freundlich constants, the adsorption isotherms are of S‐type in Giles classification. All swelling and binding parameters for PHA‐EGDMA were found to be higher than those for PHA‐NNMBA. The type of crosslinker influenced the swelling, binding, and sorption more than the type of dye. Finally, it can be said that PHA hydrogels may be used a sorbent for removal of dyes. POLYM. ENG. Biodegradable cross-linker N-maleyl chitosan (N-MACH) was synthesized with chitosan (CS) and maleic anhydride (MA) by acylation. With N-MACH cross-linker, a series of cross-linked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-itaconic acid) [P(NIPAAm-co-IA)] hydrogels were prepared, and their pH-and temperature-responsive behaviors, water contents, swelling/deswelling kinetics were investigated. By alternating the NIPAAm/IA weight ratios, hydrogels had the volume phase transition temperature (VPTT) changed from 33 to 38 °C, whereas cross-linking density did not affect the VPTT apparently. The water content of hydrogels was controlled by the monomer weight ratios of NIPAAm/IA, swelling media, and the cross-linking density. The results of the influence of pH value on the swelling behaviors showed that the minimum swelling ratios of the hydrogels appeared in neutral buffer solution, which was attributed to chemical composition of the hydrogels and the swelling media. In the swelling/deswelling kinetics, all the dried hydrogels exhibited fast swelling within 480 min and fast deswelling within 20 min, which was independent of the content of IA and cross-linker.  相似文献

Polyelectrolyte hydrogels were synthesized from N,N‐dimethylacrylamide, acrylamide, and itaconic acid with ammonium persulfate as a free‐radical initiator in the presence of methylene(bis)acrylamide as a crosslinker. The swelling behavior of the ionic poly(N,N‐dimethylacrylamide‐co‐acrylamide) hydrogels was investigated in pure water, in KSCN solutions with pHs 4 and 9, and in water–acetone mixtures according to the itaconic acid content in the hydrogel. The pulsatile swelling behavior of these hydrogels was studied both in water–acetone and in pH 2–9 buffer solutions. Although the equilibrium swelling ratio of the hydrogels with low concentrations of itaconic acid was almost not affected by changes in the temperature, the equilibrium swelling ratio of the hydrogels with high concentrations of itaconic acid increased in the temperature range of 20–50°C. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The interpenetrating polymer network hydrogels based on poly(vinyl alcohol) were obtained by graft copolymerization of acrylamide and styrene onto polyvinyl alcohol in the presence of N,N′‐methylene bisacrylamide as a crosslinking agent. The hydrogels were characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectral analysis, differential scanning calorimeter, and thermogravimetric analysis. The hydrogels showed enormous swelling in aqueous medium and displayed swelling characteristics, which were highly dependent on the chemical composition of the hydrogels and pH of the swelling medium. The kinetics of water uptake and the mechanisms of water transport were studied as a function of composition of the hydrogel and pH of the swelling medium. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of porous thermoreversible hydrogels were prepared from N‐isopropylacrylamide (90 mol %) and poly(ethylene glycol) methylether acrylate (10 mol %), which was derived from poly(ethylene glycol) monomethylether, N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide, and porosigen, or poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) with different molecular weights (MWs). The influence of pore volume in the gel on the physical properties, swelling kinetics, and solute permeation from these porous gels was investigated. The results show that the surface areas, pore volumes, and equilibrium swelling ratios for the porous gels increased with increasing MW of PEG, but the shear moduli and effective crosslinking densities decreased with increasing MW of PEG. The results from the dynamic swelling kinetics show that the transport mechanism was non‐Fickian. The diffusion coefficients of water penetrating into the gels increased with increasing pore volume of the gels. In addition, we also studied solute permeation through the porous gel controlled by temperature. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 102: 5490–5499, 2006  相似文献

Poly[(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate)‐co‐(acrylic acid)] [poly(DMAEMA‐co‐AAc)] hydrogels have been synthesized by UV‐induced copolymerization of dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and acrylic acid monomer. The effects of pH and ionic strength on the swelling behaviour of poly(DMAEMA‐co‐AAc) hydrogels were investigated in detail. It was found that there is minimal equilibrium swelling ratio (ESR) for the hydrogels with the change of pH, and the pH at minimal ESR of the hydrogels was defined by the isoelectric points (IEP), similar to the situation with protein molecules. The IEP of the hydrogels shifted to higher values with increase in the DMAEMA content in the hydrogels. Antipolyelectrolyte behaviour of the hydrogels at a pH near the IEP was observed as well, and the ESR increased with increasing ionic strength. The study of swelling kinetics of the hydrogels showed that the swelling process was Fickian at the IEP and non‐Fickian when the pH deviated from the IEP. In this study, a random copolymer of acylamide and acrylic acid [poly(AAm‐co‐AA)] was prepared by a redox copolymerization method of their aqueous solutions. The effects of initial AAm/AA mole ratio, PEG 4000 content, and N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide concentration on swelling behavior were investigated in water. Average molecular weights between crosslinks, percentage swelling, swelling equilibrium values, and diffusion/swelling characteristics (i.e., the structure of network constant, the type of diffusion, the initial swelling rate, swelling rate constant) were evaluated for every hydrogel systems. The hydrogels showed mass swelling capabilities in the range 789–1040% (for AAm/AA hydrogels), 769–930% (for AAm/AA hydrogels in the presence of PEG 4000), and 716–1040% (for AAm/AA hydrogels containing different concentrations of the crosslinker). The swelling capabilities of the hydrogels decreased with the increasing AA, PEG 4000, and crosslinker concentrations. The diffusion of water into AAm/AA hydrogels was found to be a non‐Fickian type. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 91: 1289–1293, 2004  相似文献

Bulk poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) hydrogels were prepared via free radical polymerization. Two different initiation methods were studied: redox- and photoinitiation. It was demonstrated that the desired final properties of resulting hydrogels, i.e., high monomer conversion (>95%) and adjustable swelling were only obtained by selecting best suited initiation conditions. For redox polymerization, this was achieved by tuning the ratio of accelerator N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine to initiator ammonium persulfate. The key parameters for achieving optimum photopolymerization conditions were photoinitiator concentration and UV irradiation time. With help of in situ rheological measurements, optimum conditions could be further verified and quantified by monitoring the liquid-to-gel transition. Overall, photoiniated crosslinking copolymerization was postulated to offer better options for in situ preparation of tailored functional hydrogels, in particular for the integration of smart soft matrices within membrane pores or other microsystems via a rapid reaction. Rheology was also used to investigate the hydrogel after ex situ preparation, revealing “perfect” soft-rubbery behavior. A good correlation between the mesh sizes determined from swelling and rheology was also found. In conclusion, rheology has been found to be a powerful tool because it provides valuable data on polymerization and gelation kinetics as well as information about the hydrogels microstructure based on their viscoelastic character.  相似文献

We report the synthesis of a novel poly (acrylate-acrylic acid-co-maleic acid) hydrogel by the copolymerization of acrylic acid and maleic acid in aqueous media using N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide (NMBA) as cross linker and ammonium persulfate as initiator. Hydrogels with varying concentration of the cross linker and monomer were prepared and were characterized using Fourier transform IR spectroscopy and thermogravimetry. The mechanical properties of the gel were investigated using tensile strength measurements and the morphology was confirmed with environmental scanning electron microscopy at room temperature. Water absorbency studies of the hydrogels revealed that synthesized hydrogels are responsive towards ionic strength and pH of the swelling medium. Cross link density and tensile strength were found to increase with increase in the NMBA content which was optimized from swelling experiments. Reswelling experiments of the hydrogel revealed that the synthesized hydrogel is a reusable material and it indicates its applicability in the waste water purification.  相似文献

A novel series of copolymeric acrylamide/potassium acrylate superabsorbents, blended with poly(vinyl alcohol), have been synthesized by using N, N′‐methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinker and potassium persulphate (K2S2O8) as an initiator. Swelling behavior of these hydrogels in water was investigated; and on the basis of swelling properties, the diffusional behavior of water into these hydrogel systems was analyzed. It was observed that with the increase of amount of poly(vinyl alcohol) or crosslinking, the swelling of the hydrogels decreased. The hydrogel synthesized by addition of 5% poly(vinyl alcohol) and 0.25% crosslinking showed maximum swelling of 54445%. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 98: 1927–1931, 2005  相似文献

A pH‐sensitive composite hydrogel based on poly(acrylamide‐co‐acrylic acid)/graphite was prepared by solution polymerization process in presence of redox initiator potassium persulfate/N,N,N′,N′‐tetramethylethylenediamine and cross‐linker (ethylene glycol dimethylacrylate). The structures of the hydrogels were confirmed using Fourier transform infrared, X‐ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study. Tensile strengths of the hydrogels were determined by using a universal tensile machine, whereas the electrical conductivities of the hydrogels were evaluated using Four‐probe method. The influence of cross‐linker, graphite content, and temperature on the conductivity of the hydrogel was also investigated. The bending behavior of the conducting hydrogels was investigated by exposing the hydrogels under electric field in aqueous medium. By studying the swelling ratio of the polymer synthesized under different conditions, optimization conditions were found for a polymer with the highest swelling ratio. Also, the hemolytic potentiality test revealed that prepared hydrogels are biocompatible in nature. POLYM. COMPOS., 35:27–36, 2014. © 2013 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

Summary Poly(hydroxamic acid) (PHA) hydrogels from crosslinked poly(acrylamide) (PAAm) hydrogels containing different type crosslinkers such as such as N, N'-methylene bisacrylamide (N) and ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (E). The effect of crosslinkers on some physical properties was investigated. The structure of hydrogels was characterized spectroscopically and thermally. The swelling parameters of PHA in distilled water, such as percent equilibrium swelling (Seq%), initial swelling rate (ro), maximum equilibrium swelling (Smax), diffusional exponent (n), network parameter (k) and diffusion coefficient (D) were calculated. It has been found that the ionogenity of PHA and the structure of the used crosslinkers during the synthesis have been effective on the swelling behaviour of the hydrogels.
