The tribological behavior of 30 vol% carbon fiber–reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFRPEEK) against AISI 431 steel under different temperatures of water lubrication was investigated. Friction and wear tests were carried out on a disc-on-disc contact test apparatus under different operating conditions. The results reveal that the lubricant temperature has a significant effect on the friction and wear properties of CFRPEEK sliding against AISI 431 steel. The average friction coefficient and wear rate of CFRPEEK increase with increasing lubricant temperature. However, the wear rate of AISI 431 steel did not have a positive correlation with the wear rate of CFRPEEK under different temperatures of water lubrication. Moreover, the original and worn surfaces of CFRPEEK and AISI 431 steel were imaged by environmental scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy, respectively. The main tribological mechanisms of CFRPEEK sliding against AISI 431 steel were adhesive wear, and increasing the temperature of the lubricant could accelerate wear.

Prolonging the life of engineering components through lubricant formulation to achieve better wear resistance and higher oxidation stability is of paramount importance to many mechanical systems, such as automotive gears and bearings. This can be accomplished with formulated lubricants that limit the generation of wear debris causing severe abrasion and protect the contacting surfaces through the formation of wear-resistant tribofilms. In this study, a ball-on-disk tribometer was used to characterize the friction and wear properties of steel surfaces slid in the boundary lubrication regime. An experimental scheme was developed to allow the statistical screening of various lubricant formulations. Sliding experiments were performed in baths of different lubricants at relatively low and elevated temperatures, approximately 32 and 100°C, respectively, under conditions of constant load and sliding speed. Surface profilometry, optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the dominant friction and wear mechanisms. The tribological properties were found to strongly depend on the temperature and the additives (e.g., borate, phosphorus, and sulfur) present in the blended lubricants. The superior high-temperature wear performance of the lubricant with the higher borate content is indicative of the formation of a durable tribofilm that reduces metal-to-metal adhesion, material transfer, and surface plowing by wear debris.

The scuffing behaviour of sliding couples made from 12 NiCr 13 steel, lubricated with SAE 90 and SAE 20 W30 oils with and without additives, was studied as a function of relative sliding speed and bulk oil temperature. It was found that the scuffing load decreases almost inversely with sliding speed. Calculations which take into account the decrease in hardness at increasing temperature show a fairly good constancy of total contact temperature (bulk + flash temperature) at scuffing (i.e. values ranging from 550 ° to 650 °C for all oils and test conditions). At low speeds (up to 1 m s?1) a well-defined increase in scuffing load was found when EP additives were used; at higher speeds this effect was found to have vanished completely. Variations in nominal contact pressure in the range 1 to 3 had no appreciable influence on the scuffing load, indicating that, in the present case, scuffing was associated with a transition from the boundary lubrication regime to the severe wear regime.

The aim of the present research work was to investigate the effectiveness of grooved surface texturing with a rhombic geometry under different lubrication regimes. Tribological investigation under unidirectional sliding was focused on the effect of texturing parameters including pattern area density on the coefficient of friction under different lubrication regimes, achieved by varying sliding speed and lubricant viscosity. Grooved patterns with different textured area densities were produced on steel samples by electrical discharge machining. Results of this investigation showed that under boundary lubrication, textures resist sliding thus resulting in increased friction. The largest improvement of friction reduction was observed under hydrodynamic lubrication, for low‐viscosity oil when using the textured disc with 21% pattern area density. The reduction of the coefficient of friction if compared with the untextured surface was of approximately 24%. Examination of the sliding surfaces has not shown any quantifiable wear for the contact conditions studied.

It has already been known for many years that the use of some extreme-pressure (EP), antiwear or friction modifier (FM) additives in mineral oils can produce different kind of boundary or chemical reaction films on sliding contact surfaces of some kinds of steel in boundary lubrication conditions. Using a sliding ball-on-disc configuration lubricated with some kinds of EP or FM, the wear scars on the balls can always reach the same limit size at a specified applied load and sliding velocity. From the fact that the limit sizes of wear scars decrease as sliding speed is increased or applied load is decreased, the load carrying ability of a chemical film can be obtained by extrapolating the data to the condition of zero sliding speed and is so defined that if the contact pressure is greater than this load carrying ability, the contact surfaces will continuously be worn; if the contact pressure is smaller than it, no more wear will occur on the surfaces. Based on this load carrying ability, the hydrodynamic effect of sliding pairs can also be identified. Therefore, the limit size of wear scar at specified sliding speed and applied load can also be predicted in a mixed lubrication condition.

The friction and wear of a pure copper block (99.98 wt% Cu) against a hardened steel disc were studied. The effect of sliding velocity and load on the friction coefficient and wear rate of Cu samples during steady tests was studied. Elasto-hydrodynamic (EHL), mixed (ML) and boundary lubrication (BL) regions were analyzed using the Stribeck curve. The lubrication number of Schipper, Z, was used in the analysis of the Stribeck curve. The transitions from one lubrication region to another are discussed. The mixed EHL region is characterized by stable low values of the friction coefficient, wear rate and temperature. Straight asperity contact is the dominant mechanism under friction of Cu–steel pair in the BL region. High-friction coefficients and wear rates, thin lubricant films and large wear grooves indicate straight asperity contact between rubbed surfaces in the BL region. Although the dominant mechanisms in the mixed EHL and BL regions are different in principle, a steady friction state is preserved in both cases. It is expected that the steady friction state in the BL and mixed EHL regions is associated with deformation and fracture of surface layers but these process occur at different scale levels. It was shown that under friction of Cu–steel pair, two types of ML regions are observed. The first is the stable steady friction of mixed EHL with low values of the friction coefficient and wear rate. The second type of the ML region is the region of unstable friction and wear when a decrease of lubricant film leads to a change of external (roughness, temperature, friction and wear) and internal (strain and stress) parameters. It was found out that a transition to the unstable ML region occurs within a narrow range of Z parameter under definite values of the load and sliding velocity.

Changes occurring in the friction and wear mechanisms during a load-carrying capacity test, lubricated with cetane containing a carboxylic acid, were investigated. The changes in wear scar/track appearance and oxide coverage/composition were analyzed during every load stage.

The main conclusions were as follows:
  • The breakdown in the protective oxide layer formed on the opposing steel surfaces was found to be the prerequisite for initiation of seizure.

  • The seizure load achieved during load-carrying capacity testing quantifies the ability of the test fluid to prevent transition to the adhesive wear regime.

  • The most severe surface damage was found to occur during the first few seconds after test initiation. Desorption of the adsorbed lubricant film and the subsequent removal of the naturally occurring thin oxide layer results in the initial period of adhesive wear.

  • Partial recovery to a state of acceptable friction occurs after the period of initial seizure. During this period, the surface coverage by the adsorption lubricant molecules and the oxide coverage are sufficient to prevent severe adhesive wear from occurring. Wear is primarily a combination of oxidative, abrasive, and fatigue wear (all possible in the regions of mixed friction and boundary lubrication).

  • Final lubricant breakdown and eventual seizure are initiated when the oxide removal rate exceeds the oxide formation rate resulting in severe adhesive wear followed by seizure.

The mechanisms of failure of sliding lubricated concentrated steel contacts have been studied using a newly developed tribometer which allows fast separation of the sliding surfaces at the different stages of film failure. The appearance of the corresponding contact topography was investigated by means of optical interference microscopy. The results indicate a gradual transition from full to partial elastohydrodynamic (EHD) lubrication as a function of increasing load and increasing bulk oil temperature until complete failure of the EHD film occurs at critical triplets of normal load, sliding velocity and bulk oil temperature.

This paper presents a material combination that reduces the friction coefficient markedly to a superlow friction regime (below 0.01) under boundary lubrication. A state approaching superlubricity was obtained by sliding hardened steel pins on a hydrogen-free diamond-like carbon (DLC) film (ta-C) lubricated with a poly-alpha-olefin (PAO) oil containing 1 mass% of an ester additive. This ta-C/steel material combination showed a superlow friction coefficient of 0.006 at a sliding speed of 0.1 m/s. A hydrogencontaining DLC coating/steel combination also showed a lower friction coefficient in air than a steel/steel combination, 0.1 vs. 0.8, but no large reduction was observed when the sliding surfaces were lubricated with ordinary 5W-30 engine oil and the PAO oil containing an ester additive. The friction coefficient of the hydrogen containing DLC/steel combination lubricated with the PAO containing an ester additive was above 0.05. On the other hand, the superlow friction performance demonstrates that the rolling contact friction level of needle roller bearings can be obtained in sliding contact under a boundary lubrication condition. It is planned to apply this advanced DLC coating technology to valve lifters lubricated with a newly formulated engine oil in actual mass-produced gasoline engines. A larger friction reduction of more than 45% is expected to be obtained at an engine speed of 2000 rpm.

The objective of the present investigation was to assess the influence of SiC particle dispersion in the alloy matrix, applied load, and the presence of oil and oil plus graphite lubricants on the wear behaviour of a zinc-based alloy. Sliding wear performance of the zinc-based alloy and its composite containing SiC particles has been investigated in dry and lubricated conditions. Base oil or mixtures of the base oil with different percentages of graphite were used for creating the lubricated conditions. Results show a large improvement in wear resistance of the zinc-based alloy after reinforcement with SiC particles. The lubrication improved the wear resistance and friction behaviour of both the reinforced and base alloys. It was also observed that there exists an optimum concentration of graphite particles in the lubricant mixture that leads to the best wear performance. The composite experienced higher frictional heating and friction coefficient than the matrix alloy in all the cases except oil lubricated conditions; a mixed trend was noticed in the latter case. The wear rate and frictional heating increased with load while friction coefficient was affected in an opposite manner. Test duration influenced the frictional heating and friction coefficient of the samples in a mixed manner.Examination of worn surfaces revealed a change of predominating wear mechanisms from severe ploughing and/or abrasive wear for base alloy to delamination wear for the reinforced material under dry sliding conditions. The presence of the lubricant increased the contribution of adhesive wear component while reducing the severity of abrasion. This was attributed to the generation of more stable lubricant films on the contacting surfaces. Cross-sections of worn surfaces indicated substantial wear-induced plastic deformation, thereby suggesting adhesive wear to be a predominant wear mechanism in this study. The debris particles revealed deformed flakes and machining chips signifying the involvement of adhesion and abrasion modes of wear respectively.

The performance of a lubricant largely depends on the additives it involves. However, currently used additives cause severe pollution if they are burned and exhausted. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new generation of green additives. Graphene oxide (GO) consists of only C, H and O and thus is considered to be environmentally friendly. So the tribological properties of the few-layer GO sheet as an additive in hydrocarbon base oil are investigated systematically. It is found that, with the addition of GO sheets, both the coefficient of friction (COF) and wear are decreased and the working temperature range of the lubricant is expanded in the positive direction. Moreover, GO sheets has better performance under higher sliding speed and the optimized concentration of GO sheets is determined to be 0.5wt%. After rubbing, GO is detected on the wear scars through Raman spectroscopy. And it is believed that, during the rubbing, GO sheets adhere to the sliding surfaces, behaving like protective films and preventing the sliding surfaces from contacting with each other directly. This paper proves that the GO sheet is an effective lubricant additive, illuminates the lubrication mechanism, and provides some critical parameters for the practical application of GO sheets in lubrication.

In large, slow, cross‐head marine diesel engines research has increasingly shown that the lubrication regime between piston rings and cylinder liner at top dead centre is of the boundary lubrication type due to the high gas pressure, low sliding speed, and high temperature. This means that the tribological properties of piston ring, cylinder liner, and cylinder lubricant in these types of engine under boundary lubrication conditions should be considered simultaneously when friction and wear between the piston ring and cylinder liner are studied. Until now there has been no standard method to evaluate boundary lubrication performance. There are a few traditional methods used in lubricant research, but their results are not correlated with service conditions. It is important to find a suitable method to evaluate the boundary lubrication performance of lubricants at the laboratory testing stage or before the engine testing stage. The important parameters, such as sliding speed, normal load, materials of the contacting pairs, and lubricant, need all to be controlled. In this paper a systematic experimental procedure, the ‘five times heating and cooling test’, is introduced to assess lubricant properties under boundary lubrication conditions. Most of the parameters mentioned above are controlled. The model contact, of pin‐on‐plate form, is made from the actual piston and liner materials used in a large‐bore, slow, cross‐head marine diesel engine. The temperature characteristics of different blends of lubricants are investigated under boundary lubrication conditions using a pin‐on‐plate reciprocating test rig. These blends of lubricants have the same additives but different base fluids; they nevertheless fulfil the physical and chemical requirements of a real marine diesel engine. The test temperature range is from room temperature to the working temperature of the top piston ring. The experiments show that there are different temperature—friction characteristics for lubricants with different bases and the same additive package and there are also different temperature—friction characteristics during heating up and cooling down for each blend. Single‐base lubricants have more promising temperature—friction characteristics than those of a blend of a high‐viscosity base and a low‐viscosity base at high temperature.

The boundary lubrication regime plays a very important role in determining the life span of any of the two mating parts under liquid-lubricated conditions. It is during the start\stop cycles when insufficient fluid is available to fully separate the surfaces in relative motion and thus unusual wear takes place; a case of boundary lubrication. The aim of this work is to study the feasibility of using polymer coatings as boundary lubricants. This study investigates the friction and wear properties of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) films coated on aluminium substrates under dry and base oil (without any additives)-lubricated conditions. In order to increase the load bearing capacity of the UHMWPE coatings, 0.1 wt% of single-walled carbon nanotubes are added. Experiments are carried out on a custom-built tribometer simulating a line contact between a polymer-coated cylindrical Al surface (shaft) and a flat uncoated Al plate as the counterface. The experimental parameters such as the normal load and the sliding speed are selected to simulate the boundary and mixed lubrication regimes for comparison purposes. Specific wear rates of the polymer films and bare Al surface under lubricated conditions are also calculated. Stribeck curves have been generated to evaluate the effectiveness of the pristine UHMWPE and the nanocomposite coatings in the various regimes of lubrication, especially the boundary lubrication regime. It is observed that the selected polymer coatings are effective in protecting the metallic surfaces without causing any observable oil contamination with wear debris.

A pin-on-disk type of apparatus is used to study the effect of operating variables on transition temperatures with dilute solutions of pure fatty acids in pure paraffinic hydrocarbons and with a straight paraffinic mineral oil. It is found that the temperature at which the sudden transition from low to high friction and wear occurs increases with sliding speed, decreases with load, and is otherwise independent of operating variables. Empirically, the reciprocal of the absolute transition temperature varies linearly with the logarithm of the ratio of load to speed. The absence of conventional hydrodynamic lubrication in this system is demonstrated.

It is concluded that these results are inconsistent with the widely accepted concept that boundary lubricants must form a “solid” adsorbed film to be effective. It appears necessary to adopt a modified view of the role of the boundary lubricant, in which rheological and other diverse physical characteristics must be considered, and not simply the state of matter in which it exists. In addition, it appears necessary to consider the interrelated kinetics of boundary film formation and welding between asperities.
