The "relative self": Informational and judgmental consequences of comparative self-evaluation.

Results of 5 studies demonstrated that self-evaluative comparisons have 2 distinct informational consequences with opposing judgmental effects: They selectively increase the accessibility of standard-consistent self-knowledge and provide an evaluative reference point. The first informational consequence produces assimilation in self-evaluative judgments, whereas the latter yields contrast. Using a lexical decision task, Study 1 demonstrated that a social comparison selectively increases the accessibility of standard-consistent self-knowledge. Study 2 showed that this effect also holds for comparisons with objective standards. Studies 3 and 4 revealed that the same comparison may lead to assimilation on objective and contrast on subjective self-judgments. Finally, Study 5 demonstrated that assimilation results for comparisons with relevant and irrelevant standards, whereas contrast occurs only for relevant standards. Meeting the challenge of the "junk science" defense in domestic violence litigation.

Attorneys increasingly challenge the admissibility of expert testimony in domestic violence litigation on the ground that it is "junk science." This article discusses the standards courts apply when determining whether to admit "novel" scientific theory and methodology. It is recommended that psychologists offering testimony that may be subjected to this kind of challenge, critically evaluate the foundation for their opinions in light of the admissibility standards being applied in the pertinent jurisdiction, and that they directly address with the attorneys offering them as witnesses how best to present that foundation to the trial judge in their mutual effort to meet and overcome the junk science challenge. Development and application of performance standards for Naval Petty Officers.

To help accomplish its assigned mission for the Navy, the Bureau of Naval Personnel must fulfill its functions of "Procurement" of kinds and numbers of personnel, "Training" them to the necessary skill level, the "Distribution" of the right men to the right jobs at the right time, and "Promotion." Essential in all aspects of personnel operations are performance standards. These standards must be continuously adjusted to meet and conform to the changing conditions facing the bureau and the Fleet: changes in weapons and equipment, changes in Fleet operations, changes in quality of personnel input, and time-factor changes. The bureau has an integrated system in operation for establishing, maintaining, and applying up-to-date performance standards for enlisted personnel. Starting with field analysis of the weapons and equipment during their developmental and test phases, the occupational analysis data generated are used to phase equipment into the existing occupational classification system of the Navy. The specific performance requirements, after being codified, are then used as a basis for the preparation of study and training materials. Non-vascular claudication or "painful leg syndrome"

A new sheath flow microelectrospray interface combines capillary electrophoretic separation of protein standards with condensation particle counting detection. Protein separations are performed in both coated and uncoated fused-silica columns. The electrospray needle utilizes a sheath flow rate between 0 and a few microL/min. Typically, the makeup flow is equal to or less than the electroosmotic flow from the separation capillary; thus there is minimal dilution while still providing pH adjustment and solid electrical contact with the separation capillary. While there are some inherent restrictions to a condensation particle counting detector, the microelectrospray needle performs well and has direct application to electrospray mass spectrometry.
