The removal of natural organic matter (NOM) from lake water was studied in two pilot-scale adsorbers containing granular activated carbon (GAC) with different physical properties. To study the adsorption behavior of individual NOM fractions as a function of time and adsorber depth, NOM was fractionated by size exclusion chromatography (SEC) into biopolymers, humics, building blocks, and low molecular weight (LMW) organics, and NOM fractions were quantified by both ultraviolet and organic carbon detectors. High molecular weight biopolymers were not retained in the two adsorbers. In contrast, humic substances, building blocks and LMW organics were initially well and irreversibly removed, and their effluent concentrations increased gradually in the outlet of the adsorbers until a pseudo-steady state concentration was reached. Poor removal of biopolymers was likely a result of their comparatively large size that prevented access to the internal pore structure of the GACs. In both GAC adsorbers, adsorbability of the remaining NOM fractions, compared on the basis of partition coefficients, increased with decreasing molecular size, suggesting that increasingly larger portions of the internal GAC surface area could be accessed as the size of NOM decreased. Overall DOC uptake at pseudo-steady state differed between the two tested GACs (18.9 and 28.6 g-C/kg GAC), and the percent difference in DOC uptake closely matched the percent difference in the volume of pores with widths in the 1-50 nm range that was measured for the two fresh GACs. Despite the differences in NOM uptake capacity, individual NOM fractions were removed in similar proportions by the two GACs.  相似文献

Greater Cincinnati Water Works (GCWW) evaluated the efficacy of ultraviolet light/hydrogen peroxide advanced oxidation (UV/H2O2) for reducing trace organic contaminants in natural water with varying water qualities. A year-long UV/H2O2 pilot study was conducted to examine a variety of seasonal and granular activated carbon (GAC) breakthrough conditions. The UV pilot-scale reactors were set to consistently achieve 80% atrazine degradation, allowing comparison of low pressure (LP) and medium pressure (MP) lamp technologies for by-product formation. Because hydroxyl radicals react non-selectively with organic compounds, unintended by-product formation occurred.Total assimilable organic carbon (AOC) concentration increased through the reactors from 14 to 33% on average, depending on water quality. Natural organic matter (NOM) contains the precursors for AOC production, so when post-GAC water (versus conventionally treated water) served as reactor influent, less AOC was produced. No appreciable difference in AOC concentration was observed between LP and MP UV reactors. The Spirillum strain NOX fraction of the AOC increased from 50 to 65% on average, depending on the quality of the water. The increase in this fraction of AOC occurred because oxidation of NOM yielded smaller more assimilable organic compounds such as organic acids that are necessary for NOX growth. The Pseudomonas fluorescens strain P17 AOC concentration increased only when conventionally treated plant water was used as pilot influent. This organism thrives in waters of differing organic energy sources, but does not thrive well in carboxylic acids alone. The CONV water had more overall TOC that could contribute to higher P17 AOC counts.Biofilm coupon studies indicated that biofilms with greater heterotrophic plate counts were observed in the granular activated carbon (GAC) effluent streams receiving UV/H2O2 pre-treatment. Biofilm coupon studies additionally indicated that the effluent stream of the GAC column proceeded by the MP reactor exhibited more viable biofilm than the other GAC effluent streams based on an ATP-bioluminescence method. The increased viability of the biofilm produced by the MP UV reactor is likely a result of the multiple UV wavelengths and higher energy input characteristic of this technology.  相似文献

Indigenous bacteria are essential for the performance of drinking water biofilters, yet this biological component remains poorly characterized. In the present study we followed biofilm formation and development in a granular activated carbon (GAC) filter on pilot-scale during the first six months of operation. GAC particles were sampled from four different depths (10, 45, 80 and 115 cm) and attached biomass was measured with adenosine tri-phosphate (ATP) analysis. The attached biomass accumulated rapidly on the GAC particles throughout all levels in the filter during the first 90 days of operation and maintained a steady state afterward. Vertical gradients of biomass density and growth rates were observed during start-up and also in steady state. During steady state, biomass concentrations ranged between 0.8-1.83 x 10−6 g ATP/g GAC in the filter, and 22% of the influent dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was removed. Concomitant biomass production was about 1.8 × 1012 cells/m2h, which represents a yield of 1.26 × 106 cells/μg. The bacteria assimilated only about 3% of the removed carbon as biomass. At one point during the operational period, a natural 5-fold increase in the influent phytoplankton concentration occurred. As a result, influent assimilable organic carbon concentrations increased and suspended bacteria in the filter effluent increased 3-fold as the direct consequence of increased growth in the biofilter. This study shows that the combination of different analytical methods allows detailed quantification of the microbiological activity in drinking water biofilters.  相似文献

Estrogenic compounds in drinking water sources pose potential threats to human health. Treatment technologies are needed to effectively remove these compounds for the production of safe drinking water. In this study, GAC adsorption was first tested for its ability to remove a model estrogenic compound, 17β-estradiol (E2). Although GAC showed a relatively high adsorption capacity for E2 in isotherm experiments, it appeared to have a long mass transfer zone in a GAC column reactor, causing an early leakage of E2 in the effluent. With an influent E2 concentration of 20 μg/L, the GAC reactor was able to bring down effluent E2 to ∼200 ng/L. To further enhance E2 removal, the GAC reactor was converted to a biologically active carbon (BAC) reactor by promoting biofilm growth in the reactor. Under optimal operating conditions, the BAC reactor had an effluent E2 concentration of ∼50 ng/L. With the empty bed contact times tested, the reactor exhibited more robust E2 removal performance under the BAC operation than under the GAC operation. It is noted that estrone (E1), an E2 biodegradation intermediate, was frequently detected in reactor effluent during the BAC operation. Results from this study suggested that BAC could be an effective drinking water treatment process for E2 removal and in the meantime E1 accumulation needs to be addressed.  相似文献

Granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration is used during drinking water treatment for the removal of micropollutants such as taste and odour compounds, halogenated hydrocarbons, pesticides and pharmaceuticals. In addition, the active microbial biomass established on GAC is responsible for the removal of biodegradable dissolved organic carbon compounds present in water or formed during oxidation (e.g., ozonation and chlorination) processes. In order to conduct correct kinetic evaluations of DOC removal during drinking water treatment, and to assess the state and performance of full-scale GAC filter installations, an accurate and sensitive method for active biomass determination on GAC is required. We have developed a straight-forward method based on direct measurement of the total adenosine tri-phosphate (ATP) content of a GAC sample and other support media. In this method, we have combined flow-cytometric absolute cell counting and ATP analysis to derive case-specific ATP/cell conversion values. In this study, we present the detailed standardisation of the ATP method. An uncertainty assessment has shown that heterogeneous colonisation of the GAC particles makes the largest contribution to the combined standard uncertainty of the method. The method was applied for the investigation of biofilm formation during the start-up period of a GAC pilot-scale plant treating Lake Zurich water. A rapid increase in the biomass of up to 1.1 x 10(10)cells/g GAC dry weight (DW) within the first 33 days was observed, followed by a slight decrease to an average steady-state concentration of 7.9 x 10(9)cells/g GAC DW. It was shown that the method can be used to determine the biomass attached to the GAC for both stable and developing biofilms.  相似文献

The effective removal of soluble natural organic matter (NOM) during water treatment can significantly decrease the ClO(2) demand of processed water. This can be achieved through the oxidation and/or the removal of NOM. The purpose of the study was to examine the influence of ClO(2) oxidation and subsequent GAC filtration on the final ClO(2) demand of treated water. The study showed the ClO(2) demand to be strongly correlated with the abundance of high molecular fractions of NOM in treated water. As it was shown, this part of NOM was effectively removed during the GAC filtration. Moreover, the pre-treatment of water with ClO(2) considerably increased the total capacity of GAC filters for organic and inorganic (i.e. chlorites) oxidation by-products. Therefore, the oxidation of NOM molecules in conjunction with a very efficient GAC filtration can be successfully employed to control the abundance of high molecular NOM components, and thus the ClO(2) demand of finished water.  相似文献

A method for determining the concentration of active microbial biomass in granular activated carbon (GAC) filters used in water treatment was developed to facilitate studies on the interactions between adsorption processes and biological activity in such filters. High-energy sonication at a power input of 40 W was applied to GAC samples for the detachment of biomass which was measured as adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Modelling of biomass removal indicated that a series of six to eight sonication treatments of 2 min each yielded more than 90% of the attached active biomass. The ATP concentrations in 30 different GAC filters at nine treatment plants in The Netherlands ranged from 25 to 5000 ng ATP cm(-3) GAC, with the highest concentrations at long filter run times and pretreatment with ozone. A similar concentration range was observed in nine rapid sand (RS) filters. ATP concentrations correlated significantly (p<0.05) with total direct bacterial cell counts in each of these filter types, but the median value of the ATP content per cell in GAC filters (2.1 x 10(-8) ng ATP/cell) was much lower than in the RS filters (3.6 x 10(-7) ng ATP/cell). Average biofilm concentrations ranging from 500 to 10(5) pg ATP cm(-2) were calculated assuming spherical shapes for the GAC particles but values were about 20 times lower when the surface of pores >1 microm diameter is included in these calculations. The quantitative biomass analysis with ATP enables direct comparisons with biofilm concentrations reported for spiral wound membranes used in water treatment, for distribution system pipes and other aquatic environments.  相似文献

Water and wastewater filtration systems often house pathogenic bacteria, which must be removed to ensure clean, safe water. Here, we determine the persistence of the model bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa in two types of filtration systems, and use P. aeruginosa bacteriophages to determine their ability to selectively remove P. aeruginosa. These systems used beds of either anthracite or granular activated carbon (GAC), which were operated at an empty bed contact time (EBCT) of 45 min. The clean bed filtration systems were loaded with an instantaneous dose of P. aeruginosa at a total cell number of 2.3 (±0.1 [standard deviation]) × 107 cells. An immediate dose of P. aeruginosa phages (1 mL of phage stock at the concentration of 2.7 × 107 PFU (Plaque Forming Units)/mL) resulted in a reduction of 50% (±9%) and >99.9% in the effluent P. aeruginosa concentrations in the clean anthracite and GAC filters, respectively. To further evaluate the effects of P. aeruginosa phages, synthetic stormwater was run through anthracite and GAC biofilters where mixed-culture biofilms were present. Eighty five days after an instantaneous dose of P. aeruginosa (2.3 × 107 cells per filter) on day 1, 7.5 (±2.8) × 107 and 1.1 (±0.5) × 107 P. aeruginosa cells/g filter media were detected in the top layer (close to the influent port) of the anthracite and GAC biofilters, respectively, demonstrating the growth and persistence of pathogenic bacteria in the biofilters. A subsequent 1-h dose of phages, at the concentration of 5.1 × 106 PFU/mL and flow rate of 1.6 mL/min, removed the P. aeruginosa inside the GAC biofilters and the anthracite biofilters by 70% (±5%) and 56% (±1%), respectively, with no P. aeruginosa detected in the effluent, while not affecting ammonia oxidation or the ammonia-oxidizing bacterial community inside the biofilters. These results suggest that phage treatment can selectively remove pathogenic bacteria with minimal impact on beneficial organisms from attached growth systems for effluent quality improvement.  相似文献

Fixed bed biofilm reactors with granular activated carbon (GAC) or glass beads as support media were used to evaluate the influence of short-term (12h) and long-term (23 days) increases of influent dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations on biological perchlorate removal. The goal was to evaluate the extent by which chemisorption of oxygen to GAC can enhance the stability of biological perchlorate reduction. Baseline influent concentrations were 50 microg/L of perchlorate, 2 mg/L of acetate as C, and 1mg/L of DO. Perchlorate removal in the glass bead reactor seized immediately after increasing influent DO concentrations from 1 to 4 mg/L since glass beads have no sorptive capacity. In the biologically active carbon (BAC) reactor, chemisorption of oxygen to GAC removed a substantial fraction of the influent DO, and perchlorate removal was maintained during short-term increases of influent DO levels up to 8 mg/L. During long-term exposure to influent DO concentrations of 8.5mg/L, effluent perchlorate and DO concentrations increased slowly. Subsequent exposure of the BAC reactor bed to low DO concentrations partially regenerated the capacity for oxygen chemisorption. Microbial analyses indicated similar microbial communities in both reactors, which confirmed that the differences in reactor performance during dynamic loading conditions could be attributed to the sorptive properties of GAC. Using a sorptive biofilm support medium can enhance biological perchlorate removal under dynamic loading conditions.  相似文献

The paper describes the influence of the oxidation of natural organic matter (NOM) molecules with chlorine dioxide (ClO2) on granulated activated carbon (GAC) adsorption. In order to determinate the influence of ClO2 dosage on the NOM adsorption on GAC two parallel pilot scale experiments were performed. The raw water was treated respectively with 0.2 and 0.4 mg ClO2 L(-1) followed by the adsorption on GAC filters. Experiments were total organic carbon (TOC) measurements and size exclusion chromatography (SEC) controlled. The molecular weight distribution of NOM in the filtration bed outlet demonstrates that the low molecular weight molecules are less retained than the higher molecular weight components of NOM. It is shown that low molecular weight NOM causes less ClO2 demand. The oxidation of NOM molecules and very high capacity of GAC filter bed for NOM components can be used to control high ClO2 demand.  相似文献

The effectiveness of on-site thermal regeneration of field-spent granular activated carbon (GAC) from two municipal drinking water facilities was compared with bench-scale electrochemical regeneration, a novel regeneration technology. The regeneration method was evaluated using aqueous natural organic material (NOM) adsorption, iodine number analysis, and surface area analysis. In contrast to the large electrochemical regeneration efficiencies reported in the literature for GAC loaded with phenolics and other individual organic compounds, the electrochemical reactor tested was only able to regenerate 8-15% of the NOM adsorption capacity of the field spent GAC. In contrast, thermal reactivation achieved up to 103% regeneration efficiency. To more accurately assess the efficiency of regeneration processes for water treatment applications, GAC should be loaded in continuous-flow columns and not batch rectors. The iodine number analysis yielded higher efficiency values, however it did not give an accurate estimate of the regeneration efficiency. The small changes in GAC pore size distribution were consistent with the low electrochemical regeneration efficiencies. These low efficiencies appear to be related to the low reversibility of NOM adsorption and to pH-induced adsorbate desorption being the primary mechanism for this type of electrochemical regeneration system.  相似文献

Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) adsorption filtration is commonly used in drinking water treatment to remove NOM and micro-pollutants and on base of the process conditions a certain capacity to eliminate pathogenic micro-organisms was expected. The experiences with the mandatory quantitative microbial risk assessment of Dutch drinking water revealed a lack of knowledge on the elimination capacity of this process for pathogens. The objective of the current study was to determine the capacity of GAC filtration to remove MS2, Escherichia coli and spores of Clostridium bifermentans as process indicators for pathogens and more directly of (oo)cysts of Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lamblia. Challenge tests with fresh and loaded GAC were performed in pilot plant GAC filters supplied with pre-treated surface water at a contact time which was half of the contact time of the full-scale GAC filters. MS2 phages were not removed and the removal of E. coli and the anaerobic spores was limited ranging from ≤0.1-1.1 log. The (oo)cysts of C. parvum and G. lamblia, however, were removed significantly (1.3-2.7 log). On base of the results of the experiments and the filtration conditions the removal of the indicator bacteria and (oo)cysts was largely attributed to attachment. The model of the Colloid Filtration Theory was used to describe the removal of the dosed biocolloids in the GAC filters, but the results demonstrated that there is a lack of quantitative knowledge about the influence of collector characteristics on the two major CFT parameters, the single collector and the sticking efficiency.  相似文献

The accumulation of calcium on biological activated carbon (BAC) and their effects on adsorption of synthetic organic chemicals (SOCs) were studied using BAC, which have been operated for 5 (BAC5.0) and 3.5 (BAC3.5) years in a pilot-scale water purification plant, and granular activated carbon (GAC) preloaded with fulvic acid and/or calcium. The major inorganic material accumulated on BAC was calcium. The amounts of calcium on BAC5.0 and BAC3.5 were 36.6 and 29.7 mg g(-1), respectively. Seventy-one percent of calcium existed as calcium carbonate in both BACs. BAC5.0 had higher amount of accumulated calcium than BAC3.5 even though both BACs have already exhausted for NOM in the influent in 1-year operation, suggesting that calcium carbonate gradually accumulated on BAC even after the 3.5 years of operation. The isotherms of GAC preloaded with fulvic acid and/or calcium clearly indicated that the calcium accumulation on GAC reduced adsorption capacity for simazine. The conclusion also confirmed by significant recovery of adsorption capacity of both BACs by acid-washing to remove accumulated calcium from BACs. The difference of adsorption capacity between BAC3.5 and BAC5.0 was caused not only by the difference of adsorbed NOM but also the difference in the amount of accumulated calcium.  相似文献

This paper compares the treatment efficiencies of direct (pH 7.5) and advanced (pH 11.5) partial ozonation followed by biodegradation for the treatment of tank cleaning wastewater concentrate. Both SCOD and toxicity removal efficiencies are examined and direct ozonation is found to perform better in combined toxicity and SCOD removal. Optimal process performance, i.e. the minimal ozone dosage resulting in a maximal removal of SCOD and toxicity in the final effluent, is reached upon reaction of 500 mg O3/l for both ozonation processes. This ozone dosage results in 60% SCOD reduction for direct ozonation and 64% SCOD reduction for advanced ozonation. A 79% toxicity reduction was achieved using direct ozonation compared to 53% toxicity reduction for advanced ozonation as measured with the standard Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata algal 72 h growth inhibition test. Short-term methods for biodegradability (respirometry) and toxicity (30 min Vibrio fisheri luminescence inhibition) estimation are evaluated in view of process control. The maximal specific oxygen uptake rate of an activated sludge culture (respirometry) is found to relate to the 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (SBOD,5) but less to the actual SCOD removal during biodegradation. The 30 min Vibrio fisheri luminescence inhibition test is found to be a good short-term estimator for relative changes in toxicity when compared to the standard P. subcapitata algal 72 h growth inhibition test. The 500 mg O3/l optimal ozone dosage, as determined from P. subcapitata algal 72 h growth inhibition and SCOD removal, could be retrieved using short-term methods.  相似文献

An industrial wastewater that was pretreated by an aerobic thermophilic bacterial consortium (THE) was subjected to additional treatability studies by granular activated carbon (GAC) and a conventional activated sludge (CAS). The removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in both systems was generally found to be similar. While GAC was able to attain better effluent concentrations of toluene and methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), the CAS was much more efficient at removing acetone. Furthermore, unlike the GAC, the performance of the CAS was not influenced by the high degree of variability in the influent wastewater. Characterization of the influent thermophilic wastewater using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC/MS) was performed to quantify the micropollutants as well as to evaluate removal efficiencies from the GAC and CAS systems.  相似文献

A synthetic feed, containing acetate as the only carbon source, was used to start-up four different anaerobic expanded-bed reactors containing three different types of microbial attachment media. The media types used were low-density anthracite, granular activated carbon (GAC) and two sizes of sand. All media types were of the same average diameter, 0.7 mm, except for a smaller sand, 0.35 mm. These media types were chosen to compare surface roughness, macroscopic shear stresses due to upflow velocity and sphericity. The 0.7 mm sand required the greatest upflow velocity, 16 cm/s, while the other reactors had upflow velocities of 5.5–6.0 cm/s. Sand had the least surface roughness and GAC had the roughest surface, while anthracite had the most angular shape. At steady-state, the GAC reactor retained 3.75–10 times the attached biomass retained on the other media tested and the GAC reactor accumulated biomass at a faster rate during start-up. Shear losses reflected the biomass accumulation with the two sand and anthracite media having shear loss coefficients 6–20 times greater than that of the GAC medium. Sand induced the formation of sludge granules in both sand reactors with two species of methanogens and stability of the sludge blankets was critical to reactor performance. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that attached growth developed in crevices where biomass was protected from shear forces. Attached growth on the sand and anthracite media was located only in crevices, while the GAC medium is completely covered with crevices and biofilm developed on the entire GAC particle. Surface roughness was critical to biofilm development with the rougher surface providing the better attachment medium.  相似文献

Effective aerobic/anoxic treatment of piggery manure wastewater was achieved in a real farm scale using a small piggery (72 pigs) with reuse of the treated water. The experimental procedure was followed for 9 months. Fresh manure (FM) is formed by daily flush on piggeries and biologically treated after centrifuge pre-treatment. For upgrade liquid/solid separation and pathogen retention in biological treatment, a membrane system was used with the aim of effluent reuse in flush. Despite an evolution of FM through time, centrifuge pre-treatment and bioreactor performances stayed at high level. An elimination of 86% of the suspended solids occurred through pre-treatment, and nitrogen and COD biological degradation remains at 90% all time long. Moreover, interestingly about half of the soluble part of phosphorus (20% of the global phosphorus content) was biologically removed via the recirculation between the anoxic and the aerobic tank which acted as an intermittent aerobic/anoxic sequence. A part of COD was proved not biodegradable and was accumulated via the reuse of the treated water for flushing purpose. This accumulation justifies washing of the biomass between two runs in purpose to enhance the treated water quality and also to meet the membrane tolerance. The membrane was proved reliable as far as the maintenance procedure was respected. Maintenance cleaning had to be operated as soon as the TransMembrane Pressure (TMP) achieved 50 mbar and curative washing was necessary if the TMP increased over 90 mbar or between 2 runs. The temperature was proved to influence both the bioactivity and the membrane fouling kinetic. Finally, it was demonstrated that the process was sustainable for long-term management of swine wastewater at semi-industrial scale.  相似文献

Dissolved air flotation (DAF) performance with two different naturally occurring cyanobacterial morphologies was investigated with respect to the biomass removal efficiency, the toxin release to water and the coagulant demand by different water background natural organic matter (NOM). Coagulation (C)/Flocculation (F)/DAF bench-scale experiments (2 min coagulation at 380 s−1 with polyaluminium chloride (0.5-4 mg/L Al2O3, the dose depending on the water NOM content); 8 min flocculation at 70 s−1; 8 min DAF with 5 bar relative pressure and 8% pressurised recycle) were performed with single cells of Microcystis aeruginosa and Planktothrix rubescens filaments spiked in synthetic waters with different NOM contents (hydrophobic vs. hydrophilic NOM; moderate (2-3 mgC/L) vs. moderate-high concentration (ca. 6 mgC/L)). For both morphologies, the results show no apparent cyanobacterial damage (since the water quality did not degrade in dissolved microcystins and the removal of intracellular microcystins matched the removal of chlorophyll a) and high biomass removal efficiencies (93-99% for cells and 92-98% for filaments) provided optimal coagulant dose for chlorophyll a removal was ensured. Charge neutralisation by the polyaluminium chloride was the main coagulation mechanism of the M. aeruginosa cells and most likely also of the P. rubescens filaments. The specific coagulant demand was severely affected by NOM hydrophobicity, hydrophobic NOM (with a specific UV254nm absorbance, SUVA, above 4 L/(m mgC)) requiring ca. the triple of hydrophilic NOM (SUVA below 3 L/(m mgC)), i.e. 0.7 vs. 0.2-0.3 mg Al2O3/mg DOC.  相似文献
