The effect of passive Q-switching was observed in an erbium fiber laser at a pumping power below 100 mW. The phenomenon is explained by a cascade process of the Rayleigh light scattering and the induced Mandelshtam-Brillouin scattering in a fiber resonator of the laser. In the Q-switched mode, the laser produced giant output pulses with a duration below 15 ns, a peak power up to 200 W, and a repetition period of 300–500 μs. The proposed Q-switching mechanism is inferred from the characteristic features of the laser pulse oscillograms measured at a ∼1 ns resolution. Previously, this effect was observed only in high-power fiber lasers at a pumping power of ∼2 W.  相似文献

We present an in-depth analysis of the transient response of a resonator fiber optic gyro based on triangular wave phase modulation. Unusual effects have been observed in the process of tracking the resonant frequency of an optical fiber ring resonator (OFRR). There is a distortion phenomenon, unlike the ideally square wave or a pure DC output of the OFRR, but signal overshoot or undershoot occurs. A deep analysis of the influence of the nonideal square wave or pure DC output on gyro performance is fully developed for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Further analysis shows that this is the transient response process after modulation by the triangular wave, and the process is related both to the parameters of the OFRR and the modulation frequency of the triangular wave. By sampling the steady-state signal of the distortion square wave, or by oversampling the distortion signal to get a number of data, and then accumulating and averaging these data to be demodulated, the distortion's effect can be considerably decreased.  相似文献

A He-Ne laser with an annular gain zone is studied theoretically. It is demonstrated that the He-Ne medium in the annular discharge zone possesses enough gain to maintain laser oscillation. A multipass ring resonator, which is composed of two annular spherical mirrors, is described, and it is shown that the resonator is suitable for extracting optical energy from the He-Ne medium in the annular gain zone. Considering the availability of population inversion in the traveling-wave cavity and the influence of the crossover of the folded light beam in the resonator on the output power, a calculation formula for the output power of the laser with the multipass ring resonator is given. Calculating results prove that a 1 W output of the He-Ne laser can be obtained by a 1 m length annular discharge zone.  相似文献

We report wavelength-tunable operation of a Tm-doped silica fiber laser by using a force-induced long-period fiber grating (LPFG) formed in a fiber ring resonator. The laser output wavelength is tuned by moving the transmission passband that is generated between adjacent resonance wavelengths due to the force-induced LPFG. By changing the grating period around 900 μm, we control the laser output wavelength between 1845 and 1930 nm.  相似文献

We describe the experimental construction of a single-longitudinal-mode erbium-doped fiber ring laser equipped with a ring resonator filter. The system is designed to avoid mode hopping and can be frequency scanned for spectroscopic sensor applications. We modified a conventional ring resonator filter to have the capability to reduce transmittance of unwanted modes, which is essential for frequency scanning without mode hopping.  相似文献

A detection system in the resonator fiber-optic gyro is set up by the phase modulation (PM) spectroscopy technique. The slope of the demodulated curve near the resonant point is found to affect the ultimate sensitivity of the gyro. To maximize the demodulated signal slope, the modulation frequency and index are optimized by the expansion of the Bessel function and optical field overlapping method. Using different PM frequencies for the light waves, the open-loop gyro output signal is observed. The modulation frequency in this PM technique is limited only by the cutoff frequency of the LiNbO3 phase modulators, which can reach several gigahertz. This detection technique and system can be applied to the resonator micro-optic gyro with a less than 10 cm long integrated optical ring.  相似文献

A novel electrooptic (EO) electric field (E-field) sensor based on side-polished fiber coupled with an EO polymer microring resonator is proposed and demonstrated. An EO polymer waveguide with a ring shape is fabricated on the polished flat of an optical fiber. Light in the fiber evanescently couples into the resonator and forms resonant modes for certain wavelengths and produces notches in the output intensity of the fiber. External electric fields change the index of refraction of the ring waveguide and therefore dither its resonant wavelengths. For light of wavelength on the slope of a resonance notch, a change in the output intensity can be detected. The sensor is all dielectric without metal layers to distort the measured E-field. The resonant structure allows the sensor to potentially have much higher sensitivity than other electrooptic sensors based on Mach-Zehnder or polarization modulation. Since electrooptic polymers have higher electrooptic coefficients, lower dielectric constants and faster electrooptic responses than inorganic crystals, higher sensitivity, lower invasiveness, and higher bandwidth of E-field sensing can be expected. This sensor eliminates unreliable fiber-to-waveguide butt coupling as well as the high propagation loss encountered in the long straight EO polymer waveguides of sensors based on Mach-Zehnder structures. By using the fiber itself as the supporting substrate of the ring waveguide, the sensor can have small size and low disturbance to the measured electric field. The concept is demonstrated using AJLS103 EO polymer. A sensitivity of 100 mV/m has been achieved at frequencies up to 550 MHz (limited by the measurement system)  相似文献

A novel interferometric fiber-optic gyroscope with amplified optical feedback by an Er-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is proposed and theoretically investigated (the proposed gyroscope is named the feedback EDFA-FOG, FE-FOG in what follows). The FE-FOG functions like a resonant fiber-optic gyro (R-FOG) because of its multiple utilization of the Sagnac loop; however, it is completely different because a low-coherence light source is used. In addition, the gyro output signal is pulsed because the modulation frequency of the phase modulator placed in the Sagnac loop is selected to match the total round-trip time delay of the light, which includes the Sagnac-loop delay plus that of the feedback loop of the fiber amplifier. The sharpness of the output pulse can be adjusted by both the gain of an EDFA and the modulation depth of the phase modulator. When rotation occurs the peak position of the output pulse is shifted as a result of the Sagnac effect. The resolution of the rotation measurement depends on the sharpness of the output pulse. The techniques of both the open-loop and closed-loop methods are described in detail, which shows the great advantage of the proposed gyroscope over the to the conventional interferometric fiber-optical gyroscope (I-FOG).  相似文献

We demonstrate an all-fiber Q-switched laser operation in the 2 μm region on the basis of a dynamic periodic microbend and pulsed-pump configuration. A single-mode thulium-doped silica fiber is pumped by 1.6 μm-band laser diodes, and the dynamic loss is introduced in the fiber ring resonator by the periodic microbend that is electrically controlled with a piezoelectric actuator. When the voltage-off period of the piezoelectric actuator is set at 20 μs for the pump power of 120 mW, the output pulse power is measured by 420 mW with a pulse width of 1.3 μs.  相似文献

A fiber optic phase modulator is described in which the phase of a light wave traveling in an optical fiber is modulated by a composite electromechanical resonator with Q≌1000. The instantaneous frequency of the wave at the modulator output varies according to a harmonic law. The interval of tuning of the instantaneous light wave frequency achieved in the experiment is 20 GHz, which corresponds to a modulation index of ≌106. It is demonstrated that a maximum value of the frequency tuning range is determined by the elastic limit of the resonator material.  相似文献

An experimental study of a bow-tie-shaped double-coupler fiber ring resonator is presented. Multiple resonances of the transmitted output intensity and the splitting of the main resonance dip or peak have been observed. The experimental results are discussed and compared with theoretical results. The observed output property suggests the possible applications of the resonator as periodic Butterworth-like, narrow-band passing, and blocking filters.  相似文献

The performance of a flash-lamp-pumped Cr:LiSAF unstable laser resonator utilizing a fourth-order super-Gaussian variable reflectivity mirror as an output coupler is described. The super-Gaussian mirror results in a smooth, flattop transverse beam profile in the near field that is advantageous for nonlinear frequency-conversion applications. Long-pulse and Q-switched operation of the Cr:LiSAF unstable laser resonator are described and compared with stable resonator operation. We obtained tunable ultraviolet radiation extending from 267 to 290 nm by frequency mixing theQ-switched Cr:LiSAF laser output with lithium triborate and beta-barium borate nonlinear crystals.  相似文献

A method for measuring the length of an optical fiber by use of an optical fiber ring laser pulse source is proposed and demonstrated. The key element of the optical fiber ring laser is a gain-switched Fabry-Perot laser diode operated in a self-injection seeding scheme. This method is especially suitable for measuring a medium or long fiber, and a resolution of 0.1 m is experimentally achieved. The measurement is implemented by accurately determining the pulse frequency that can maximize the output power of the fiber ring laser. The measurement results depend only on the refractive index of the fiber corresponding to this single wavelength, instead of the group index of the fiber, which represents a great advantage over both optical time-domain reflectometry and optical low-coherence reflectometry methods.  相似文献

A special property of a type 3 optical fiber ring resonator with a 3 × 3 planar coupler in which the circulating intensity is independent of the phase change of the ring resonator can be used to eliminate unwanted Kerr bistability. At the same time the device can be used as a two-channel frequency division multiplexer or demultiplexer or a switch. Another method for the elimination of Kerr bistability is the use of two fibers whose nonlinear refractive-index coefficients have opposite signs to build the ring resonator.  相似文献

We describe the spectral and power features of a ytterbium-doped double-clad photonic crystal fiber laser that is operated in a ring configuration with an external mirror that feeds back only one of its two output beams. We compare the operation of the laser with and without an external feedback mirror. We find that the feedback mirror reduces significantly the spectral and power fluctuations. It is also responsible for an interesting spectral phenomenon: The laser frequency is drifting periodically over 9 nm at a rate of 2 nm/s from a short wavelength to a longer wavelength and vice versa.  相似文献

In this paper, we present the realization of a fiber laser source emitting simultaneously over 17 wavelengths spread over the whole C-band. An acoustooptic frequency shifter is placed in the laser ring cavity to suppress the cross-gain saturation effects of the erbium-doped fiber. The emitted wavelengths are fixed by a set of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). A power uniformity reaching 6 dB is achieved by inscribing the FBGs while monitoring the laser output. We demonstrate the reliability of this laser as a source for characterization of optical components and networks by the measurement of optical fiber chromatic dispersion. The measurement is performed over the whole telecommunication C-band (1530-1560 nm) using the time-of-flight method. We perform the measurement on three different fibers with different levels of dispersion, namely a standard fiber, a nonzero dispersion shifted fiber, and a dispersion compensating fiber. The results are compared with measurements obtained using a standard network analyzer. The agreement between the two methods is better than /spl plusmn/1%, thus proving the suitability of the developed laser source for this application.  相似文献

An instrument has been developed to characterize the mean dimensions of softwood fiber samples. It is based on the phenomenon that particles of cylindrical shape diluted in water and shorter than one fourth of the acoustic wavelength migrate to nodal planes of acoustic radiation pressure and reorient parallel to these planes when subjected to a stationary ultrasonic field. As the resonator operating frequency is 72 kHz, fibers up to 5 mm in length can be measured. The time evolution of the fiber suspension during ultrasonic excitation is monitored with a collimated beam of light. Scattered light signals collected off-axis in the plane perpendicular to the acoustic nodal planes are shown to be a function of the weighted average fiber length. Results are presented for pulp samples in the average fiber length range of 0.2 to 3 mm. It was found that there is a region where the scattered light is linearly related to concentration. Acoustooptical measurements obtained at initial concentration in this linear region, for all fractions, have shown that the longer the average length from screen classifier is, the faster the layer formation is. Since the fiber length the radius are proportional for a wood species, this observation is in agreement with the theoretical prediction.  相似文献

A theoretical study of bistability caused by the optical Kerr effect in a type 1 optical fiber ring resonator connected to a 3 × 3 planar coupler is presented. The dependence of the bistability on various parameters of the fiber and the coupler is investigated. A comparison between the bistable characteristics of this ring resonator and those of a fiber ring resonator with a 3 × 3 equilateral triangular (nonplanar) fiber coupler is made.  相似文献
