It is a well-known fact that one grating can act as an imaging element for another grating when the first is illuminated with an extended monochromatic light source. The conditions for image formation in such a system are studied when the finite size and position of the broad light source are considered. From the presented analysis, expressions for the location and the depth of focus of such images can be derived.  相似文献

An optical diagnostic method, grating light reflection spectroscopy (GLRS), has been demonstrated for the in situ monitoring of properties of heterogeneous matrices in industrial processes. The technique is based on measurements near the critical points of intensity and phase in waves reflected from a transmission diffraction grating in contact with a diagnostic sample. The features contained in the reflection spectrum near these thresholds allow for the simultaneous determination of the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric function of the sample. Using these data, the milling progress of highly concentrated fluid suspensions is observed as the material is milled from approximately 40 mm to 160 nm in diameter. A theoretical model that closely resembles experimentally determined spectra was constructed and applied in combination with principal components analysis (PCA) to demonstrate that GLRS can be used to closely monitor changes in the mean particle size of the nanomilled drug product.  相似文献

A multimodal methodology for spectral imaging of cells is presented. The spectral imaging setup uses a transmission diffraction grating on a light microscope to concurrently record spectral images of cells and cellular organelles by fluorescence, darkfield, brightfield, and differential interference contrast (DIC) spectral microscopy. Initially, the setup was applied for fluorescence spectral imaging of yeast and mammalian cells labeled with multiple fluorophores. Fluorescence signals originating from fluorescently labeled biomolecules in cells were collected through triple or single filter cubes, separated by the grating, and imaged using a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera. Cellular components such as nuclei, cytoskeleton, and mitochondria were spatially separated by the fluorescence spectra of the fluorophores present in them, providing detailed multi-colored spectral images of cells. Additionally, the grating-based spectral microscope enabled measurement of scattering and absorption spectra of unlabeled cells and stained tissue sections using darkfield and brightfield or DIC spectral microscopy, respectively. The presented spectral imaging methodology provides a readily affordable approach for multimodal spectral characterization of biological cells and other specimens.  相似文献

The characterization of three-dimensional inhomogeneous illumination fields is a challenge in modern microscopy. Here we use a four-arm DNA junction as a nanomechanical translation stage to move a single fluorescent quantum dot through an exponentially decaying evanescent field. Recording the emission of the quantum dot within the evanescent field as well as under homogeneous illumination allows one to directly obtain the intensity distribution of the excitation field without additional deconvolution. Our method will allow the characterization of a broad range of illumination fields and to study near-field effects between small optical probes.  相似文献

We report a compact light source that incorporates a semiconductor light-emitting diode, nanostructured distributed feedback (DFB) Bragg grating and spin-coated thin conjugated polymer film. With this hybrid structure, we transferred electrically generated 390?nm ultraviolet light to an organic polymer via optical pumping and out-couple green luminescence to air through a second-order DFB grating. We demonstrate the feasibility of electrically driven, hybrid, compact light-emitting devices and lasers in the visible range.  相似文献

A novel photonic microwave discrete-time finite-impulse response filter is created by spectrally slicing a supercontinuum source, generated from a mode-locked laser. We experimentally demonstrate a four-tap filter with a 28.16 dB extinction ratio. Comparison between measured and predicted magnitude responses shows an excellent match in the performance of the notch filter across the entire bandwidth. The small amount of individual deviation points from the predicted response shows the stability of the amplitude fluctuations between each of the individual, spectral sliced filter taps.  相似文献

The angular distributions of light scattered by gold-coated and aluminum-coated gratings with amplitudes of ~90 nm and periods of 6.67 mum were measured and calculated for light incident from a He-Ne laser at an angle of 6 degrees . Experimental results are compared with predictions of Beckmann's scalar theory and Rayleigh's vector theory. The measured scattering pattern has a background of scattered light due mainly to residual surface roughness. Also the power in the higher-order peaks is larger by several orders of magnitude than the computed one, which can be attributed mainly to the low-order contributions of the harmonics in the profile.  相似文献

Grating feedback optics is shown to contribute to narrowing the spectral bandwidth of a multilongitudinal-mode laser diode to less than 0.2 nm and tuning the lasing wavelength to the peak absorption wavelength of Nd:YVO(4). A continuous green light of 31 mW was efficiently generated by intracavity frequency doubling of the Nd:YVO(4) laser with a KTiOPO(4) crystal. A relative intensity noise of less than -140 dB/Hz was obtained in the frequency region greater than 2 MHz. The noise characteristics of generated green light are discussed as compared with the case of using a single-longitudinal-mode laser diode as the pumping source.  相似文献

In the fiber Bragg grating sensing using a superluminescent diode as the light source and an arrayed waveguide grating as the wavelength interrogator, the wavelength measurement error due to the spectral modulation of the superluminescent diode is theoretically formulated and quantitatively analyzed by computer simulation. It is shown that the wavelength measurement errors produced with the use of real superluminescent diodes are in very good agreement with the theoretical results. In order to reduce the wavelength measurement error due to the spectral modulation of superluminescent diode, two different types of remedies are proposed that utilize the temperature switching of superluminescent diode and that adjust the bandwidths of fiber Bragg grating and arrayed waveguide grating, and their efficacies are experimentally demonstrated together with good quantitative agreement with the theoretical calculation.  相似文献

It is demonstrated theoretically and experimentally that linear velocities of reflecting objects may be measured using a resonant ring interferometer with a low-frequency light source. The limiting sensitivity of this interferometer is estimated. It is shown that a resonant ring interferometer can be used to measure extremely low linear velocities corresponding to subhertz Doppler frequency shifts of light, which cannot be measured by conventional Doppler techniques based on direct measurements of the frequency difference between the initial and reflected waves. The diffraction transmission characteristics of submicrometer gratings (SMGs) designed for coupling tricolor light out of a light guide plate (LGP) are discussed. Three discrete SMGs are designed for three special wavelengths: red (700 nm), green (546.1 nm), and blue (435.8 nm). The propagation direction of the output tricolor light is perpendicular to the surface of the LGP and can pass through the corresponding pixels of liquid crystal. Calculated by the rigorous coupled-wave theory, the first-order transmission efficiency as a function of grating depth is found to be approximate to a sinusoidlike curve and can be utilized to obtain uniform illumination. The theoretical maximum transmission is as much as 44%. The performance of the LGP composed of SMGs is also demonstrated by our experiments. Compared with other types of LGP, the present device has the advantage of flexible control of illumination angle and wavelengths. Additionally, lossy and costly color filters are unnecessary in the proposed configuration.  相似文献

It is shown that the recently discovered phenomenon of so-called spectral switches has a natural interpretation in the framework of singular optics with polychromatic light and that it should be regarded as being primarily a manifestation of diffraction-induced spectral changes rather than correlation-induced spectral changes as was suggested in the original papers [the first one appearing in Opt. A cavity-enhanced absorption setup employing an incoherent broadband light source was used in combination with a Fourier-transform spectrometer to measure the spin-forbidden B-band of gaseous oxygen at approximately 688 nm and several weak absorption transitions of water vapor in the same spectral region at room temperature in ambient air. The experiments demonstrate that the sensitivity of a Fourier-transform spectrometer can be significantly improved by increasing the effective path length, while retaining a rather small sample volume. In comparison with a single-pass absorption measurement, we report a path-length enhancement factor of 200 and an improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio of approximately 6 in the present cavity-enhanced absorption experiment. The practical advantages and limitations of this novel approach are outlined and potential applications are briefly discussed.  相似文献

The properties of a fiber-optic-based grating interferometer with a laser diode as the light source are described. The influence of effects such as wavelength shift, line broadening, and mode hopping on the quality of an interference pattern is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. Introduction of carrier fringes in the interference pattern through the injection-current-induced modulation of a laser diode is shown. The requirements for temporal coherence properties of a light source in grating interferometry are given.  相似文献

Imaging with visible light today uses numerous contrast mechanisms, including bright- and dark-field contrast, phase-contrast schemes and confocal and fluorescence-based methods. X-ray imaging, on the other hand, has only recently seen the development of an analogous variety of contrast modalities. Although X-ray phase-contrast imaging could successfully be implemented at a relatively early stage with several techniques, dark-field imaging, or more generally scattering-based imaging, with hard X-rays and good signal-to-noise ratio, in practice still remains a challenging task even at highly brilliant synchrotron sources. In this letter, we report a new approach on the basis of a grating interferometer that can efficiently yield dark-field scatter images of high quality, even with conventional X-ray tube sources. Because the image contrast is formed through the mechanism of small-angle scattering, it provides complementary and otherwise inaccessible structural information about the specimen at the micrometre and submicrometre length scale. Our approach is fully compatible with conventional transmission radiography and a recently developed hard-X-ray phase-contrast imaging scheme. Applications to X-ray medical imaging, industrial non-destructive testing and security screening are discussed.  相似文献

Summary The problem of bifurcation of a solid circular cylinder subjected to finite extension and torsion is investigated using the theory of small deformations superposed on large elastic deformations. The material of the cylinder is assumed to be isotropic, elastic, homogeneous and incompressible. A numerical scheme is adopted to solve the system of partial differential equations and the associated boundary conditions governing the problem for a class of strain-energy functions. The numerical results obtained determined the critical twist corresponding to a given extension of the cylinder.  相似文献

A novel focusing waveguide grating coupler comprising an integrated uniform grating coupler and binary-phase-only diffractive lens is proposed, designed, and fabricated. Experimental results are also presented to demonstrate the device performance. This device is in direct competition with single-element focusing grating couplers defined by direct-write electron-beam lithography and its structure is attractive because the fabrication procedure is better suited for mass production.  相似文献
