This paper evaluates hydrogen and power co-generation based on direct coal chemical looping systems with total decarbonization of the fossil fuel. As an illustrative example, an iron-based chemical looping system was assessed in various plant configurations. The designs generate 300–450 MW net electricity with flexible hydrogen output in the range of 0–200 MWth (LHV). The capacity of evaluated plant concepts to have a flexible hydrogen output is an important aspect for integration in modern energy conversion systems. The carbon capture rate of evaluated concepts is almost total (>99%). The paper presents in details evaluated plant configurations, operational aspects as well as mass and energy integration issues. For comparison reason, a syngas-based chemical looping concept and Selexol®-based pre-combustion capture configuration were also presented. Direct coal chemical looping configuration has significant advantages compared with syngas-based looping systems as well as solvent-based carbon capture configurations, the more important being higher energy efficiency, lower (or even zero) oxygen consumption and lower plant complexity. The results showed a clear increase of overall energy efficiency in comparison to the benchmark cases.  相似文献

This paper analyzes innovative processes for producing hydrogen from fossil fuels conversion (natural gas, coal, lignite) based on chemical looping techniques, allowing intrinsic CO2 capture. This paper evaluates in details the iron-based chemical looping system used for hydrogen production in conjunction with natural gas and syngas produced from coal and lignite gasification. The paper assesses the potential applications of natural gas and syngas chemical looping combustion systems to generate hydrogen. Investigated plant concepts with natural gas and syngas-based chemical looping method produce 500 MW hydrogen (based on lower heating value) covering ancillary power consumption with an almost total decarbonisation rate of the fossil fuels used. The paper presents in details the plant concepts and the methodology used to evaluate the performances using critical design factors like: gasifier feeding system (various fuel transport gases), heat and power integration analysis, potential ways to increase the overall energy efficiency (e.g. steam integration of chemical looping unit into the combined cycle), hydrogen and carbon dioxide quality specifications considering the use of hydrogen in transport (fuel cells) and carbon dioxide storage in geological formation or used for EOR.  相似文献

This paper is assessing the hydrogen production from bioethanol at industrial scale (100000 Nm3/h hydrogen equivalent to 300 MW thermal) with carbon capture. Three carbon capture designs were investigated, one based on pre-combustion capture using chemical gas–liquid absorption and two based on chemical looping (one based on syngas and one using direct bioethanol looping). The carbon capture options were compared with the similar designs without carbon capture. The designs were simulated to produce mass and energy balances for quantification of key performance indicators. A particular accent is put on assessment of reforming technologies (steam and oxygen-blown autothermal reforming) and chemical looping units, process integration issues of carbon capture step within the plant, modelling and simulation of whole plant, thermal and power integration of various plant sub-systems by pinch analysis. The results for chemical looping designs (either syngas-based or direct bioethanol) show promising energy efficiency coupled with total carbon capture rate.  相似文献

IGCC is a power generation technology in which the solid feedstock is partially oxidized to produce syngas. In a modified IGCC design for carbon capture, there are several technological options which are evaluated in this paper. The first two options involve pre-combustion arrangements in which syngas is processed, either by shift conversion or chemical looping, to maximise the hydrogen level and to concentrate the carbon species as CO2. After CO2 capture by gas-liquid absorption or chemical looping, the hydrogen-rich gas is used for power generation. The third capture option is based on post-combustion arrangement using chemical absorption.Investigated coal-based IGCC case studies produce 400-500 MW net power with more than 90% carbon capture rate. Principal focus of the paper is concentrated on evaluation of key performance indicators for investigated carbon capture options, the influence of various gasifiers on carbon capture process, optimisation of energy efficiency by heat and power integration, quality specification of captured CO2. The capture option with minimal energy penalty is based on chemical looping, followed by pre-combustion and post-combustion.  相似文献

This paper evaluates biomass and solid wastes co-gasification with coal for energy vectors poly-generation with carbon capture. The evaluated co-gasification cases were evaluated in term of key plant performance indicators for generation of totally or partially decarbonized energy vectors (power, hydrogen, substitute natural gas, liquid fuels by Fischer–Tropsch synthesis). The work streamlines one significant advantage of gasification process, namely the capability to process lower grade fuels on condition of high energy efficiency. Introduction in the evaluated IGCC-based schemes of carbon capture step (based on pre-combustion capture) significantly reduces CO2 emissions, the carbon capture rate being higher than 90% for decarbonized energy vectors (power and hydrogen) and in the range of 47–60% for partially decarbonized energy vectors (SNG, liquid fuels). Various plant concepts were assessed (e.g. 420–425 MW net power with 0–200 MWth flexible hydrogen output, 800 MWth SNG, 700 MWth liquid fuel, all of them with CCS). The paper evaluates fuel blending for optimizing gasification performance. A detailed techno-economic evaluation for hydrogen and power co-generation with CCS was also presented.  相似文献

An integrated hydrogen and power co-generation system based on slurry-feed coal gasification and chemical looping hydrogen generation (CLH) was proposed with Shenhua coal as fuel and Fe2O3/MgAl2O4 as an oxygen carrier. The sensitivity analyses of the main units of the system were carried out respectively to optimize the parameters. The syngas can be converted completely in the fuel reactor, and both of the fuel reactor and steam reactor can maintain heat balance. The purity of hydrogen produced after water condensation is 100%. The energy and exergy analyses of the proposed system were studied. Pinch technology was adopted to get a reasonable design of the heat transfer network, and it is found pinch point appears at the hot side temperature of 224.7 °C. At the given status of the proposed system, the hydrogen yield is 1040.11 kg·h−1 and the CO2 capture rate is 94.56%. At the same time, its energy and exergy efficiencies are 46.21% and 47.22%, respectively. According to exergy analysis, the degree of exergy destruction is ranked. The gasifier unit has the most serious exergy destruction, followed by chemical looping hydrogen generation unit and the heat recovery steam generator unit.  相似文献

In this paper, steam-iron process (Fe looping) and NiO-based chemical looping combustion (Ni looping) are integrated for hydrogen production with inherent separation of CO2. An integrated combined cycle based on the Fe and Ni loopings is proposed and modeled using Aspen Plus software. The simulation results show that at Fe-SR 815 °C, Fe-FR 815 °C, Ni-FR 900 °C and Ni-AR 1050 °C without supplementary firing, the co-production plant has a net power efficiency 14.12%, hydrogen efficiency 33.61% and an equivalent efficiency 57.95% without CO2 emission. At a supplementary firing temperature of 1350 °C, the net power efficiency, hydrogen efficiency and the equivalent efficiency are 27.47%, 23.39% and 70.75%, respectively; the CO2 emission is 365.36 g/kWh. The plant is attractive because of high-energy conversion efficiency and relatively low CO2 emission; moreover, the hydrogen/electricity ratio can be varied in response to demand. The influences of iron oxide recycle rate, supplementary firing temperature, inert support addition and other parameters on the system performance are also investigated in the sensitive analyses.  相似文献

This paper evaluates various calcium-based chemical looping concepts to be applied in Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) plants for decarbonised energy vectors poly-generation (with emphasis on power generation and hydrogen and power co-generation). Two calcium-based chemical looping configurations were analysed. The first concept is based on post-combustion capture using the flue gases resulted from the power block (combined cycle gas turbine). The second concept is based on pre-combustion capture, the calcium-based chemical looping systems being used simultaneous to capture carbon dioxide (by sorbent enhanced water gas shift) and to concentrate the syngas energy in the form of hydrogen-rich gas.  相似文献

In this article, a novel cycle configuration has been studied, termed the extended chemical looping combustion integrated in a steam‐injected gas turbine cycle. The products of this system are hydrogen, heat, and electrical power. Furthermore, the system inherently separates the CO2 and hydrogen that is produced during the combustion. The core process is an extended chemical looping combustion (exCLC) process which is based on classical chemical looping combustion (CLC). In classical CLC, a solid oxygen carrier circulates between two fluidized bed reactors and transports oxygen from the combustion air to the fuel; thus, the fuel is not mixed with air and an inherent CO2 separation occurs. In exCLC the oxygen carrier circulates along with a carbon carrier between three fluidized bed reactors, one to oxidize the oxygen carrier, one to produces and separate the hydrogen, and one to regenerate the carbon carrier. The impacts of process parameters, such as flowrates and temperatures have been studied on the efficiencies of producing electrical power, hydrogen, and district heating and on the degree of capturing CO2. The result shows that this process has the potential to achieve a thermal efficiency of 54% while 96% of the CO2 is captured and compressed to 110 bar. Exergetic and energetic analysis has been utilized to estimate the effect of process design and conditions on the hydrogen purity and yield, exergetic efficiencies and CO2 avoided. Methane was chosen as a model compound for evaluating single stage separation. Simple steam reforming was considered as the base – case system. The other chemical processes that were considered were steam reforming with CO2 capture with and without chemical looping of a reactive carbon dioxide removal agent, and steam gasification with both the Boudouard reaction catalyst and the reactive carbon dioxide removal agent with and without the solids regeneration. The information presented clearly demonstrates the differences in efficiencies between the various chemical looping processes for hydrogen generation. The incremental changes in efficiencies as a function of process parameters such as temperature, steam amount, chemical type and amount were estimated. Energy and exergy losses associated with generation of syngas, separation of hydrogen from COx as well as exergetic loss associated with emissions are presented. The optimal conditions for each process by minimizing these losses are presented. The majority of the exergy destruction occurs due to the high irreversibility of chemical reactions. The results of this investigation demonstrate the utility of exergy analysis. The paper provides a procedure for the comparison of various technologies for the production of hydrogen from carbon based materials based on First and Second Law Analysis. In addition, two figures of merit, namely the comparative advantage factor and the sustainable advantage factor have been proposed to compare the various hydrogen production methods using carbonaceous fuels.  相似文献

Coal direct chemical looping (CDCL) substitutes the gasification process in syngas chemical looping (SCL), thus eliminating the need for higher oxygen consumption. In this study, operating conditions are assessed for CDCL and SCL, directed towards hydrogen production from coal. The main objective is to increase the overall H2/CO2 ratio for a given amount of coal, based on the various conditions. The operating variables considered as part of a resource optimization analysis include: (i) inlet conditions to the primary reactors, (ii) minimum resource requirements (air, steam and iron oxide), (iii) hydrogen-to-component ratios, and (iv) effect of coal carrier gas. The results suggest that CDCL has a higher hydrogen-to-CO2 ratio than SCL along with advantages such as low overall resource requirements (steam and air) and fewer intermediate processes. The coal carrier gas affects the hydrogen production only in the SCL system by altering the composition of syngas induced by gasifier temperature variation.  相似文献

Steam methane reforming (SMR) needs the reaction heat at a temperature above 800 °C provided by the combustion of natural gas and suffers from adverse environmental impact and the hydrogen separated from other chemicals needs extra energy penalty. In order to avoid the expensive cost and high power consumption caused by capturing CO2 after combustion in SMR, natural gas Chemical Looping Reforming (CLR) is proposed, where the chemical looping combustion of metal oxides replaced the direct combustion of NG to convert natural gas to hydrogen and carbon dioxide. Although CO2 can be separated with less energy penalty when combustion, CLR still require higher temperature heat for the hydrogen production and cause the poor sintering of oxygen carriers (OC). Here, we report a high-rate hydrogen production and low-energy penalty of strategy by natural gas chemical-looping process with both metallic oxide reduction and metal oxidation coupled with steam. Fe3O4 is employed as an oxygen carrier. Different from the common chemical looping reforming, the double side reactions of both the reduction and oxidization enable to provide the hydrogen in the range of 500–600 °C under the atmospheric pressure. Furthermore, the CO2 is absorbed and captured with reduction reaction simultaneously.Through the thermodynamic analysis and irreversibility analysis of hydrogen production by natural gas via chemical looping reforming at atmospheric pressure, we provide a possibility of hydrogen production from methane at moderate temperature. The reported results in this paper should be viewed as optimistic due to several idealized assumptions: Considering that the chemical looping reaction is carried out at the equilibrium temperature of 500 °C, and complete CO2 capture can be achieved. It is assumed that the unreacted methane and hydrogen are completely separated by physical adsorption. This paper may have the potential of saving the natural gas consumption required to produce 1 m3 H2 and reducing the cost of hydrogen production.  相似文献

A cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment is carried out to evaluate the environmental impact of producing 1 kg of hydrogen implementing innovative chemical looping technologies: chemical looping hydrogen production (CLH), sorption enhanced reforming (SER), and sorption enhanced chemical looping reforming (SECLR). The performance of the looping technologies is compared against conventional hydrogen production without and with CO2 capture, as well as against green hydrogen production in order to determine the more environmentally-friendly option. Comparing the looping technologies with the reference blue hydrogen production it shows that CLH has a lower environmental burden, presenting smaller values in 9 out of 12 environmental impact indicators. If we confront the looping technologies against each other, CLH shows better performance in 11 out of 12 environmental indicators. As expected, green hydrogen has a much smaller overall environmental impact with the exception of human toxicity, terrestrial ecotoxicity and mineral depletion.  相似文献

This paper investigates the potential use of renewable energy sources (various sorts of biomass) and solid wastes (municipal wastes, sewage sludge, meat and bone meal etc.) in a co-gasification process with coal to co-generate hydrogen and electricity with carbon capture and storage (CCS). The paper underlines one of the main advantages of gasification technology, namely the possibility to process lower grade fuels (lower grade coals, renewable energy sources, solid wastes etc.), which are more widely available than the high grade coals normally used in normal power plants, this fact contributing to the improvement of energy security supply. Based on a proposed plant concept that generates 400–500 MW net electricity with a flexible output of 0–200 MWth hydrogen and a carbon capture rate of at least 90%, the paper develops fuel selection criteria for coal blending with various alternative fuels for optimizing plant performance e.g. oxygen consumption, cold gas efficiency, hydrogen production and overall energy efficiency. The key plant performance indicators were calculated for a number of case studies through process flow simulations (ChemCAD).  相似文献

This paper investigates the potential use of lower grade coals in an IGCC-CCS plant that generates electricity and produces hydrogen simultaneously with carbon dioxide capture and storage. The paper underlines one of the main advantages of gasification technology, namely the possibility to process lower grade coals, which are more widely available than the high-grade coals normally used in European power plants. Based on a proposed plant concept that generates about 400 MW net electricity with a flexible output of 0–50 MWth hydrogen and a carbon capture rate of at least 90%, the paper develops fuel selection criteria for coal fluxing and blending of various types of coal for optimizing plant performance e.g. oxygen consumption, hydrogen production potential, specific syngas energy production per tonne of oxygen consumed, etc. These performance indicators were calculated for a number of case studies through process flow simulations. The main conclusion is that blending of coal types of higher and lower grade is more beneficial in terms of operation and cost performance than fluxing high-grade coals.  相似文献

Hydrogen production by biogas conversion represent a promising solution for reduction of fossil CO2 emissions. In this work, a detailed techno-economic analysis was performed for decarbonized hydrogen production based on biogas conversion using calcium and chemical looping cycles. All evaluated concepts generate 100,000 Nm3/h high purity hydrogen. As reference cases, the biogas steam reforming design without decarbonization and with CO2 capture by gas-liquid chemical absorption were also considered. The results show that iron-based chemical looping design has higher energy efficiency compared with the gas-liquid absorption case by 2.3 net percentage points as well as a superior carbon capture rate (99% vs. 65%). The calcium looping case shows a lower efficiency than chemical scrubbing, with about 2.5 net percentage points, but the carbon capture rate is higher (95% vs. 65%). The hydrogen production cost increases with decarbonization, the calcium looping shows the most favourable situation (37.14 €/MWh) compared to the non-capture steam reforming case (33 €/MWh) and MDEA and iron looping cases (about 42 €/MWh). The calcium looping case has the lowest CO2 avoidance cost (10 €/t) followed by iron looping (20 €/t) and MDEA (31 €/t) cases.  相似文献

A large-scale hydrogen production system is proposed using solid fuels and designed to increase the sustainability of alternative energy forms in Canada, and the technical and economic aspects of the system within the Canadian energy market are examined. The work investigates the feasibility and constraints in implementing such a system within the energy infrastructure of Canada. The proposed multi-conversion and single-function system produces hydrogen in large quantities using energy from solid fuels such as coal, tar sands, biomass, municipal solid waste (MSW) and agricultural/forest/industrial residue. The proposed system involves significant technology integration, with various energy conversion processes (such as gasification, chemical looping combustion, anaerobic digestion, combustion power cycles-electrolysis and solar–thermal converters) interconnected to increase the utilization of solid fuels as much as feasible within cost, environmental and other constraints. The analysis involves quantitative and qualitative assessments based on (i) energy resources availability and demand for hydrogen, (ii) commercial viability of primary energy conversion technologies, (iii) academia, industry and government participation, (iv) sustainability and (v) economics. An illustrative example provides an initial road map for implementing such a system.  相似文献

Natural H2 in useful quantities is negligible, which makes hydrogen unsuitable as an energy resource compared to other fuels. H2 production by solar, biological, or electrical sources needs more energy than obtained by combusting it. Lower generation of pollutants and better energy efficiency makes hydrogen a potential energy carrier. Hydrogen finds potential applications in automobile and energy production. However, the cost of producing hydrogen is extremely high. Chemical-looping technology for H2 generation has caught widespread attention in recent years. This work, presents some recent findings and provides a comprehensive overview of different chemical looping techniques such as chemical looping reforming, syngas chemical looping, coal direct chemical looping, and chemical looping hydrogen generation method for H2 generation. The above processes are discussed in terms of the relevant chemical reactions and the associated heat of reactions to ascertain the overall endothermicity or exothermicity of the H2 production. We have compared the H2 yield data of different Fe/Ni, spinel and perovskites-based oxygen carriers (OC) reported in previous literature. This review is the first comprehensive study to compare the H2 yield data of all the previously reported oxygen carriers as a function of temperature and redox cycles. In addition, the article summarizes the characteristics and reaction mechanisms of various oxygen carrier materials used for H2 generation. Lastly, we have reviewed the application of Density Function Theory (DFT) to study the effect of various dopant addition on the efficiency of H2 production of the oxygen carriers and discussed ASPEN simulations of different chemical looping techniques.  相似文献

In this paper, some potential sustainable hydrogen production options are identified and discussed. There are natural resources from which hydrogen can be extracted such as water, fossil hydrocarbons, biomass and hydrogen sulphide. In addition, hydrogen can be extracted from a large palette of anthropogenic wastes starting with biomass residuals, municipal wastes, plastics, sewage waters etc. In order to extract hydrogen from these resources one needs to use sustainable energy sources like renewables and nuclear. A total of 24 options for sustainable hydrogen production are then identified. Sustainable water splitting is the most important method of hydrogen production. Five sustainable options are discussed to split water, which include electrolysis, high temperature electrolysis, pure and hybrid thermochemical cycles, and photochemical/radiochemical methods. Other 19 methods refer to extraction of hydrogen from other materials than water or in conjunction with water (e.g., coal gasification with CO2 capture and sequestration). For each case the achievable energy and exergy efficiency of the method were estimated based on state of the art literature screening for each involved process. In addition, a range of hydrogen production capacity is determined for each of the option. For a transition period to hydrogen economy nuclear or solar assisted coal gasification and fossil fuel reforming technologies – with efficiencies of 10–55% including CO2 sequestration – should be considered as a viable option. Other “ready to be implemented” technology is hydro-power coupled to alkaline electrolysers which shows the highest hydrogen generation efficiency amongst all electrical driven options with 60–65%. Next generation nuclear reactors as to be coupled with thermochemical cycles have the potential to generate hydrogen with 40–43% energy efficiency (based on LHV of hydrogen) and 35–37% exergy efficiency (based on chemical exergy of hydrogen). Furthermore, recycling anthropogenic waste, including waste heat, waste plastic materials, waste biomass and sewage waters, shows also good potential as a sustainable option for hydrogen production. Biomass conversion to hydrogen is found as potentially the most efficient amongst all studied options in this paper with up to 70% energy efficiency and 65% exergy efficiency.  相似文献

In this paper, a chemical looping combustion (CLC) system, using haematite (Fe2O3) as an oxygen carrier, has been simulated in conjunction with a steam–coal gasification process. The analysis has assumed thermodynamic equilibrium throughout. Full heat integration was considered for a range of operating conditions (e.g. by varying oxygen carrier recycle rate). It was found that for low to moderate flows of oxidising steam, it was possible to operate within a regime which could be fully heat-integrated. Furthermore, the size of this operating regime increases with the recycle rate of oxygen carrier. The peak exergetic efficiencies achieved for fully heat-integrated systems were 48.4% and 58.3% at operating pressures of 1 atmosphere and 10 atmospheres respectively, and these were increased respectively to 53.7% and 59.7% when a bottoming steam turbine cycle was included to utilise waste heat. These values compare favourably with those achieved by hydrogen production via steam reformation of methane. The range of suitable operating conditions available at both pressures was encouraging, and showed considerable promise for the successful coupling of a chemical looping system with a gasifier.  相似文献
