The wear resistance of chromium oxide (Cr2O3) coatings could be improved by doping modification and changing the structural scale, etc. In this study, micrometric Cr2O3 coatings were doped with different additives, CeO2 and Nb2O5. Moreover, Cr2O3 coatings were deposited from nanostructured feedstock by the combination process of plasma spraying and dry-ice blasting. The correlation between the microstructure, chemical components and tribological properties of plasma-sprayed Cr2O3-based coatings was discussed based on the investigation of their porosity, hardness and friction behaviors. The results showed that the composite coatings doped with additives exhibited a higher microhardness, corresponding to a lower porosity than pure Cr2O3 coating under the identical plasma-spray condition. CeO2 constituent was found to improve the wear resistance of Cr2O3 coating while Nb2O5 incorporation corresponds to a steep rise in the friction coefficient. The mismatch of coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) between Cr2O3 and Nb2O5 lamellae facilitated the origin of fatigue cracks and the formation of microfracture pits. Although the combination process promotes a porosity reduction, the nanostructured Cr2O3 (n-Cr2O3) coatings present a lower microhardness than micrometric coatings, due to their loosen microstructure from insufficient plasma power compared to microscaled coatings. The wear mechanisms of both the micro- and nanometric Cr2O3 coatings are fatigue cracks and material transfer.  相似文献

Gadolinium zirconate (Gd2Zr2O7, GZ) as one of the promising thermal barrier coating materials for high-temperature application in gas turbine was toughened by nanostructured 3 mol% yttria partially-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) incorporation. The fracture toughness of the composite of 90 mol% GZ-10 mol% YSZ (GZ–YSZ) was increased by about 60% relative to the monolithic GZ. Both the GZ and GZ–YSZ composite coatings were deposited by atmospheric plasma spraying on Ni-base superalloys and then thermal-shock tested under the same conditions. The thermal-shock lifetime of GZ–YSZ composite coating was improved, which is believed to be mainly attributed to the enhancement of fracture toughness by the addition of YSZ. In addition, the failure mechanisms of the thermal-shock tested GZ–YSZ composite coatings were discussed.  相似文献

Silicon carbide particulate reinforced alumina matrix composites were fabricated using DIrected Metal OXidation (DIMOX) process. Continuous oxidation of an Al-Si-Mg-Zn alloy with appropriate dopants along with a preform of silicon carbide has led to the formation of alumina matrix surrounding silicon carbide particulates. SiCp/Al2O3 ceramic matrix composites fabricated by the DIMOX process, possess enhanced mechanical properties such as flexural strength, fracture toughness and wear resistance, all at an affordable cost of fabrication. SiCp/Al2O3 matrix composites were investigated for mechanical properties such as flexural strength, fracture toughness and hardness; the composite specimens were evaluated using standard procedures recommended by the ASTM. The SiCp/Al2O3 ceramic matrix composites with SiC volume fractions from 0.35 to 0.43 were found to possess average bend strength in range 158-230 MPa and fracture toughness was found to be in range of 5.61-4.01 MPa√m. The specimen fractured under three-point loading as observed under scanning electron microscope was found to fail in brittle manner being the dominant mode. Further the composites were found to possess lower levels of porosity, among those prepared by DIMOX process.  相似文献

A new composite coating material of ceramic (Al2O3-40?wt% TiO2)–metallic glass (Fe56Cr23Mo13B8) gradient transition coating was successfully prepared by atmospheric plasma spraying technology, and a new theory of laminar–columnar structure gradient transition synergistic enhancement effect was proposed. The microstructure and element distribution of the composite coating were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The fracture toughness and fracture behaviour of the composite coating were analysed via micro-hardness and three-point bending (3PB) tests. The results showed that the stress release of the ceramic–metallic glass gradient transition coating was stable compared with that of the conventional gradient coating in the stage of acute deformation, and the coating exhibited better fracture toughness. Different areas of the ceramic–metallic glass gradient transition coating exhibited different fracture behaviours. Additionally, the ceramic layer was made of columnar crystals, and the metal–glass layer was lamellar. The laminar–columnar structure gradient transition synergistic enhancement effect improved the anti-crack growth and fracture toughness. This study provides a new and viable option for the improvement of thermal spraying ceramic composite coatings.  相似文献

Semiconductor particles doped Al2O3 coatings were prepared by cathode plasma electrolytic deposition in Al(NO3)3 electrolyte dispersed with SiC micro- and nano-particles (average particle sizes of 0.5–1.7?µm and 40?nm respectively). The effects of the concentrations and particle sizes of the SiC on the microstructures and tribological performances of the composite coatings were studied. In comparison with the case of dispersing with SiC microparticles, the dispersion of SiC nanoparticles in the coatings was more uniform. When the concentration of SiC nanoparticles was 5?g/L, the surface roughness of the composite coating was reduced by 63%, compared with that of the unmodified coating. Friction results demonstrated that the addition of 5?g/L SiC nanoparticles reduced the friction coefficient from 0.60 to 0.38 and decreased the wear volume under dry friction. The current density and bath voltage were measured to analyze the effects of SiC particles on the deposition process. The results showed that the SiC particles could alter the electrical behavior of the coatings during the deposition process, weaken the bombardment of the plasma, and improve the structures of the coatings.  相似文献

Nanostructured FeAl2O4-based ceramic matrix composite coatings were prepared in-situ by reactive plasma spraying micro-sized Al–Fe2O3 and Al–Fe2O3–Cr2O3 powders. The microstructure, toughness, Vickers hardness, and adhesive strength of these coatings were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and mechanical tests. The results indicated that both the coatings exhibited a nanostructured microstructure. The grains of coating AFC sprayed with Al–Fe2O3–Cr2O3 powders are finer than those of the coating AF sprayed with Al–Fe2O3 powders. The composite nano-coating sprayed with Al–Fe2O3–Cr2O3 powders exhibited higher hardness and better wear resistance compared with those of the composite nano-coating sprayed with Al–Fe2O3 powders. The adhesive strength, toughness, and wear resistance of the composite coating sprayed with Al–Fe2O3–Cr2O3 powders were significantly enhanced compared with those of the composite coating sprayed with Al–Fe2O3 powders, which were attributed to the Cr2O3 addition.  相似文献

La2Ce2O7 (LCO) is a promising candidate material for thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) application because of its higher temperature capability and better thermal insulation property relative to yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ). In this work, La2Ce2O7 TBC with segmentation crack structure was produced by atmospheric plasma spray (APS). The mechanical properties of the sprayed coatings at room temperature including microhardness, Young's modulus, fracture toughness and tensile strength were evaluated. The Young's modulus and microhardness of the segmented coating were measured to be about 25 and 5 GPa, relatively higher than those of the non-segmented coating, respectively. The fracture toughness of the LCO coating is in a range of 1.3–1.5 MPa m1/2, about 40% lower than that of the YSZ coating. The segmented TBC had a lifetime of more than 700 cycles, improving the lifetime by nearly two times as compared to the non-segmented TBC. The failure of the segmented coating occurred by chipping spallation and delamination cracking within the coating.  相似文献

Yb2O3 (10 mol%) and Gd2O3 (20 mol%) doped SrZrO3 was investigated as a material for thermal barrier coating (TBC) applications. The thermal expansion coefficients (TECs) of sintered bulk Sr(Zr0.9Yb0.1)O2.95 and Sr(Zr0.8Gd0.2)O2.9 were recorded by a high-temperature dilatometer and revealed a positive influence on phase transformations of SrZrO3 by doping Yb2O3 or Gd2O3. The results for the thermal conductivities of Sr(Zr0.9Yb0.1)O2.95 and Sr(Zr0.8Gd0.2)O2.9 indicated that both dopants can reduce the thermal conductivity of SrZrO3. Mechanical properties (Young's modulus, hardness, and fracture toughness) of dense Sr(Zr0.9Yb0.1)O2.95 and Sr(Zr0.8Gd0.2)O2.9 showed lower Young's modulus, hardness and comparable fracture toughness with respect to YSZ. The cycling lifetimes of Sr(Zr0.9Yb0.1)O2.95/YSZ and Sr(Zr0.8Gd0.2)O2.9/YSZ double layer coatings (DLC), which were prepared by plasma spraying, were comparable to that of YSZ at operating temperatures <1300 °C. However, the cycling lifetime of Sr(Zr0.9Yb0.1)O2.95/YSZ DLC was 25% longer, whereas Sr(Zr0.8Gd0.2)O2.9/YSZ DLC had a shorter lifetime compared to the optimized YSZ coating at operating temperatures >1300 °C.  相似文献

The mass production of MAX phase coatings such as Ti3SiC2 and Ti3AlC2 using the plasma spraying method is highly challenging due to its ultra-high temperature and short reaction time. In this study, agglomerate powders of 3Ti/SiC/C/xAl with various Al contents (x = 0–1.5) were prepared to form TiC/Ti5Si3/Ti3SiC2 composite coatings using the plasma spraying technique. The effect of the Al addition on the microstructures and mechanical performances of the as-sprayed coatings was investigated. The addition of Al decreased the TiC content of the coatings while increasing their Ti3SiC2 content significantly. The addition of even small amounts of Al improved the MAX phase fraction of the coatings from 8.95 wt% (x = 0) to 34.05 wt% (x = 0.2) and 41.60 wt% (x = 0.5). Excess Al did not affect the Ti3SiC2 content of the coatings. The composite coatings showed a lamellar structure with pores and microcracks. With the addition of Al, the microhardness of the coatings increased slightly, while the fracture toughness improved significantly. The composite coatings with Al showed better wear resistance than those without Al. The wear mechanism of the coatings was a combination of adhesive wear, abrasive wear, and oxidative wear.  相似文献

Thermal sprayed ceramic coatings have extensively been used in components to protect them against friction and wear. However, the poor lubricating ability severely limits their application. Herein, yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ)/MoS2 composite coatings were successfully fabricated on steel substrate with the combination of thermal spraying technology and hydrothermal reaction. Results show that the synthetic MoS2 powders are composed of numbers of ultra-thin sheets (about 7 ~ 8?nm), and the sheet has obvious lamellar structure. After vacuum impregnation and hydrothermal reaction, numbers of MoS2 powders, look like flowers, generate inside the plasma sprayed YSZ coating. Moreover, the growing point of the MoS2 flower is the intrinsic micro-pores of YSZ coating. The friction and wear tests under high vacuum environment indicate that the composite coating has an extremely long lifetime (>?100,000 cycles) and possesses a low friction coefficient less than 0.1, which is lower by about 0.15 times than that of YSZ coating. Meanwhile, the composite shows an extremely low wear rate (2.30?×?10?7 mm3 N?1 m?1) and causes slight wear damage to the counterpart. The excellent lubricant and wear-resistant ability are attributed to the formation of MoS2 transfer films and the ultra-smooth of the worn surfaces of hybrid coatings.  相似文献

Alumina (Al2O3) and alumina-yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) composites containing 3 and 5 mass% ceria (CeO2) were prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) at temperatures of 1350-1400 °C for 300 s under a pressure of 40 MPa. Densification, microstructure and mechanical properties of the Al2O3 based composites were investigated. Fully dense composites with a relative density of approximately 99% were obtained. The grain growth of alumina was inhibited significantly by the addition of 10 vol% zirconia, and formation of elongated CeAl11O18 grains was observed in the ceria containing composites sintered at 1400 °C. Al2O3-YSZ composites without CeO2 had higher hardness than monolithic Al2O3 sintered body and the hardness of Al2O3-YSZ composites decreased from 20.3 GPa to 18.5 GPa when the content of ZrO2 increased from 10 to 30 vol%. The fracture toughness of Al2O3 increased from 2.8 MPa m1/2 to 5.6 MPa m1/2 with the addition of 10 vol% YSZ, and further addition resulted in higher fracture toughness values. The highest value of fracture toughness, 6.2 MPa m1/2, was achieved with the addition of 30 vol% YSZ.  相似文献

Different additives (metals, ceramics, and metal/ceramic assembles) were incorporated into chromium oxide (Cr2O3) coatings to improve its wear resistance. The doping or co-doping effects were compared in terms of the microstructure, phase composition, microhardness and sliding wear properties of plasma-sprayed Cr2O3-7wt.% Mo, Cr2O3-7wt.% Nb2O5, Cr2O3-4wt.% MoO3-3wt.% Mo, and Cr2O3-4wt.% Nb2O5-3wt.% Mo coatings. Under the low sliding loads, the composite coatings mated with WC-Co counterparts have lower friction coefficients than those against Si3N4, which are inverse with their microhardnesses, but more obvious fatigue wear characteristics. Under the high sliding loads, Mo/Nb2O5 co-doped Cr2O3 coating (CNM) has the best wear resistance than other coatings, due to the delaying co-effects of crack formation and propagation on basis of the crack deflection and the toughening effects of Mo additives and the high hardness of Nb2O5 additives. As the reciprocating sliding loads exceed the critical stress of brittle Cr2O3-based coatings, the coating detachments occur, displaying obvious fatigue wear characteristics.  相似文献

Niobium carbide composite coatings were prepared on titanium alloy surface by plasma spraying NbC–Al2O3, Nb–SiC and Nb–SiC–Al composite powders, respectively. The phase composition, microstructure and formation mechanism of the three composite coatings were analyzed and their microhardness, toughness and scratch resistance were compared. The phases of the NbC–Al2O3 system did not change during the plasma spraying process, and new phases (Nb2C, NbC and Nb3Si) were formed in the Nb–SiC and Nb–SiC–Al systems. TEM results of the Nb–SiC composite coating indicate that the new phases nanocrystalline Nb2C, submicron NbC and nanocrystalline Nb3Si were formed during the plasma spraying process. Compared with the NbC–Al2O3 composite coating, the microstructure of the Nb–SiC and the Nb–SiC–Al composite coatings were uniform, and the porosity were relatively low, and the hardness was higher. The Nb–SiC–Al composite coating was denser than the Nb–SiC composite coating, the lamellar structure was obvious and the number of pores in the coating was the least, which is attributed to the better molten state of the composite powder by the addition of the Al to the Nb–SiC system. The Nb–SiC–Al composite coating had better toughness and scratch resistance.  相似文献

Dry ceramic block-on-steel ring wear tests were performed at high loads in several Al2O3/20 vol.% SiC composites as a function of the SiC grain size, which ranged from 0.2 to 4.5 μm in d50. The wear resistance of the monolithic alumina was radically improved by the addition of the SiC particles, reducing down to one order of magnitude wear rate. Two different behaviours were identified according to the microstructural observations on the worm surfaces: intergranular fracture and grain pull-out in the monolithic Al2O3, and plastic deformation and surface polishing in the composites. The wear resistance of the Al2O3/SiC composites increased with the SiC grain size due to their fracture toughness enhancement.  相似文献

A rapid and simple way of producing bulk graded Al2O3/YAG/YSZ ternary eutectics was investigated. The combustion reaction between Al/Fe2O3/Y2O3/ZrO2 led to the formation of molten mixtures consisting of Al2O3/YAG/YSZ, and the subsequent separation of the ceramic melt from the iron melt was realized under ultra-high-gravity field, followed by the solidification of the ceramic melt. The as-solidified ceramic ingot sank into the iron melt, where an instantaneous isostatic pressure about 2 MPa was exerted on the around of the ceramic ingot resulting in an enhanced degree of densification. Microstructure analysis demonstrated that densified ceramic was composed of Al2O3/YAG/YSZ ternary eutectics. The phase composition, morphologies, hardness and fracture toughness of the eutectic product changed gradually along the direction of high gravity field. The maximum density of the eutectic ceramic was 97.32%, correspondingly, the maximum value of the Vickers hardness and fracture toughness reached 17.82 GPa and 5.51 MPa m1/2, respectively.  相似文献

Current work pursues generating controlled bimodal microstructure by plasma spraying of micrometer-sized Al2O3 and nanostructured spray-dried agglomerate with reinforcement of 20 wt% of 8 mol % yttria stabilized zirconia (8YSZ) and 4 wt% carbon nanotube (CNT) as potential thermal barrier coating (TBC) on the Inconel 718 substrate. Composite coatings exhibit bimodal microstructure of: (i) fully melted and resolidified microstructured region (MR), and (ii) partially melted and solid state sintered nanostructured regions (NR). Reinforcement with 8YSZ has led to an increase in hardness from ∼12.8 GPa (for μ-Al2O3) to ∼13.9 GPa in MR of reinforced Al2O3-YSZ composite. Further, with the addition of CNT in Al2O3-8YSZ reinforced composite, hardness of MR has remained similar ∼13.9 GPa (8YSZ reinforced) and ∼13.5 GPa (8YSZ-CNT reinforced), which is attributed to acquiescent nature and non-metallurgical bonding of CNT with MR. Indentation fracture toughness increased from 3.4 MPam0.5 (for μ-Al2O3) to a maximum of 5.4 MPam0.5 (8YSZ- CNT reinforced) showing ∼57.7% improvement, which is due to crack termination at NR, retention of t-ZrO2 (∼3.3 vol%) crack bridging, and CNT pull-out toughening mechanisms. Modified fractal models affirmed that the introduction of bimodal microstructure (NR) i.e., nanometer-sized- Al2O3, nanostructured 8YSZ and CNTs in the μ-Al2O3 (MR) contributes ∼44.6% and ∼72% towards fracture toughness enhancement for A8Y and A8YC coatings. An enhanced contribution of nanostructured phases in toughening microstructured Al2O3 matrix (in plasma sprayed A8YC coating) is established via modified fractal model affirming crack deflection and termination for potential TBC applications.  相似文献

Y2SiO5 is a promising material for the thermal barrier coatings due to its low thermal conductivity, high temperature stability and exceptional resistance for molten silicate attack. However, it suffers low fracture toughness and low coefficient of thermal expansion compared with yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). In this study, a composite coating approach, i.e., incorporating YSZ into Y2SiO5 coating, was employed to overcome those limitations. The double-layered Y2SiO5-YSZ/YSZ coatings were fabricated using atomospheric plasma spraying and tested under thermal cycling at 1150 °C. The phase compositions, microstructure, mechanical properties and the failure behavior were evaluated. It was found that the amorphous phase during spraying would crystallize at high temperature accompanied by volume shrinkage, leading to cracks and spallation in the coating. With YSZ addition, the composite coatings exhibited a much longer lifetime than the single phase Y2SiO5 coating due to a lower volume shrinkage and enhanced toughness.  相似文献

To improve the resistance of the hydrotransport pipe steel to corrosion and erosion in oil sand slurry, a Ni-Co-Al2O3 composite coating was fabricated by electrolytic deposition on X-65 pipe steel substrate. Potentiodynamic polarization curve and electrochemical impedance measurements show that the deposited coating significantly improves the corrosion resistance of the steel in water-oil-sand solution that simulates the chemistry of oil sand slurry. The corrosion resistance of the coating increases with the increasing Al2O3 particle concentration in electrolyte, cathodic current density, electrode rotating speed and temperature. However, a maximum value of corrosion resistance as a function of the depositing parameters is observed, indicating that the optimal electrodepositing parameters and operating conditions are essential to the maximization of the corrosion resistance of the coated steel in oil sand slurry. The optimal depositing conditions are suggested in the given system. The morphology, structure and composition of the coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. The Ni-Co-Al2O3 composite coating develops a compact, uniform, nodular structure with an average thickness of 50-200 microns. The Al2O3 amount in the coating increases with the increasing Al2O3 concentration in electrolyte, which also enhances the co-deposition of Ni and Co. The micro-hardness and wear resistance of the composite coatings are much higher than the steel substrate and increase with the increasing Al2O3 particle amount in the coating.  相似文献

Al2O3-TiO2-MgO ceramic alternant layer coatings were prepared by atmospheric plasma spraying and heat treated at 600, 700, 800, 900, and 1000?°C. The influence of heat treatment on microhardness, fracture toughness, and the structural evolution of the coatings on steel were investigated. Heat treatment promoted alternant layer interdiffusion within ceramic coatings, which could result a transformation from a lamellar morphology to mutual pinning. The interfacial diffusion between the bond coating and substrate was clearly demonstrated after heat treatment at different temperatures. Heat treatment also significantly affected the evolution of the hardness and fracture toughness. Temperature strongly affected the microhardness of the specimens, and the hardness arrived to the highest value at 1000?°C. The formation of a new Mg2Al6Ti7O25 phase and alternant layer mutual pinning were beneficial to hardness improvement, and heat treatment also significantly improved fracture toughness.  相似文献

Sliding wear behaviors of atmospheric plasma-sprayed Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) coating mated with four metallic or ceramic counterparts (Si3N4, Al2O3, GCr15 and ZrO2) were investigated. It has been found that YSZ coatings in contact with Si3N4 and GCr15 show better tribological performances than the other cases, which is due to the formation of the tribolayer mainly consisting of Si3N4 and Fe2O3 respectively on the worn surfaces. In the case of YSZ coating-Al2O3 and YSZ coating-ZrO2 tribopairs, the wear debris are more irregular and larger in size, resulting in severe abrasive wear and brittle fracture of debris particles. In particular, the specific wear rate of YSZ coating sliding against GCr15 is negative due to the significant material transfer of the tribo-oxide layer, while that of YSZ coating sliding against ZrO2 is the highest. Amorphization of the wear particles appears in the four cases due to the repeated mechanical action. It has been demonstrated that the wear of YSZ coating deteriorates with the increased flash temperature between the contact surfaces during rubbing process.  相似文献
