The purpose of the study was to evaluate the impact of cleaning on indoor environment quality. Surface dust contamination and occupants' perception of the work environment factors and symptoms were the parameters studied. Six multi-floor office buildings were selected. Dust contamination on surfaces was sampled with gelatine foils and quantified using a BM-Dustdetector. Occupants' perceptions of the environment were assessed with modified MM-40 questionnaires. The results indicated that each building had its own surface dust contamination profile. Weekly cleaning maintained the surface dust contamination at the highest acceptable level for indoor environments. The occupants and their activities have a major effect on the level of dust particle contamination on desks. The correlation between the perceived surface dust contamination and the level of satisfaction with cleaning was as expected. Furthermore, surface dust contamination appeared not to be associated with work-related symptoms. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The results provide information about current program for contractors and clients, e.g. appropriate cleaning intervals of different surfaces, and the influence of disorder on result. After the evaluation of surface dust contamination levels, it will be possible for cleaning companies to focus on the most important surfaces to clean in order to enhance the quality of the indoor environment in office buildings. This should lead to future development work, which will require cooperation between contractors, clients, and research scientists. In office environments where high cleanliness is required, objective measurements (with instruments) are needed in addition to subjective measurements (the perceptions of occupants). It is essential to evaluate the efficiency of cleaning programs regularly with effective and appropriate quality-monitoring methods.  相似文献

Mite allergens are involved in airway sensitization and allergic diseases. We evaluated the exposure to house dust-mite (Der p 1 and Der f 1) and pet (Fel d 1 and Can f 1) allergens in hotels in Uberlandia, Midwestern Brazil. A total of 140 dust samples were collected from bedding (n = 98) and carpet (n = 42) of bedrooms in 20 hotels enrolled for this study. Geometric mean (GM) levels of Der f 1 (11.30 microg/g of dust; 95% CI: 8.34-15.30 microg/g) were significantly higher than Der p 1 (0.15 microg/g of dust; 95% CI: 0.13-0.18 microg/g) in bedding dust samples (P < 0.001), regardless of the hotel classes. Der f 1 levels were significantly higher in bedding (11.30 microg/g of dust; 95% CI: 8.34-15.30 microg/g) than carpet (6.32 microg/g of dust; 95% CI: 4.31-9.26 microg/g) dust samples (P < 0.05). High levels of Der f 1 (>10 microg/g of dust) were found in 58%, 76%, and 69% of dust samples from Simple, Economical, and Tourist/Superior hotels, respectively, while GM levels of Fel d 1 (0.11 microg/g of dust; 95% CI: 0.09-0.14 microg/g) and Can f 1 (0.30 microg/g of dust; 95% CI: 0.20-0.44 microg/g) were relatively low. These results indicate that Der f 1 is the predominant allergen in hotels in Uberlandia, especially in bedding dust samples, regardless of the hotel classes and could represent an important risk factor for exacerbation of allergic symptoms in previously mite-sensitized guests. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Mites and pets are important sources of indoor allergens. Most people spend the greatest part of their time indoors. Hotels can constitute an important allergen reservoir of the indoor environment and could represent an important risk for exacerbation of allergic symptoms in previously sensitized guests. Thus, hotels should also be included for planning indoor allergen avoidance as part of a global management strategy, especially in patients with respiratory allergy.  相似文献

This paper reports the comparison of three measuring methods for quantifying the amount of dust on the inner surface of ventilation ducts: 1) a vacuum test method; 2) a gravimetric tape method; and 3) an optical method. Thirteen recently constructed buildings were selected for the field test in the Helsinki metropolitan area. The dust samples in each method were all taken from the same location in the duct. Most of the ducts sampled had no residual oil originating from the manufacturing process. The mean amount of dust measured with the vacuum test method was 1.3 g/m2 and the range was < 0.1-8.4 g/m2. The mean surface dust level measured using the gravimetric tape method was slightly lower, i.e. 1.2 g/m2 (< 0.1-5.0 g/m2). The mean cleanliness level of the ducts was 15% (2-41%) using the optical method. The wide variations and differences in the results of the different methods were caused by the unequal distribution of dust on the duct surfaces.  相似文献

The aim was to investigate the association between building-related symptoms (BRS) in office buildings and the inflammatory potency of dust (PD). Furthermore, the association between dust potency and various building characteristics was investigated. Occupants of 22 office buildings received a retrospective questionnaire about BRS (2301 respondents). Dust was collected from groups of offices and building characteristics were recorded. The potency of a dust sample to induce interleukin-8 (IL-8) secretion from the lung epithelial cell line A549 was measured as the slope of the initial linear part of the concentration-response curve. Symptoms of the central nervous system (CNS) were associated with the potency of surface dust (OR = 1.4). This association may be due to an association between an index of CNS symptoms and dust potency in offices of 1-6 occupants (OR = 1.5). No single symptoms correlated with the potency of surface dust. The PD was not related to single building factors. The inflammatory PD may be used as an integrated proxy measure of biologically active compounds in dust, reflecting health relevant properties of the dust. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The potency of surface dust may be used as a crude measurement of the chemical and biological exposures present in the building, and being associated with the development of central nervous system symptoms. However, additional research is needed to establish the predictive value of the potency of surface dust.  相似文献

Occurrence of selected surfactants in untreated and treated sewage   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Several surfactants were monitored in treated and untreated sewage in nine municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in western Austria. The nine sampled WWTPs cover a wide variety referring to size and applied treatment technology. The investigation focused on linear alkylbenzene sulphonate (LAS), quaternary ammonia compounds (QAC), nonylphenol (NP), octylphenol (OP), nonylphenolmono- (NP(1)EO) and -diethoxylates (NP(2)EO). Whereas LAS, NP, OP and NP(1,2)EO were analysed separately in the liquid phase and in the solid phase, the QACs were measured in the total sample. Total influent concentrations of LAS varied between 2.4 mg l(-1) up to 6.7 mg l(-1) whereas total effluent concentrations were in the lower microg l(-1) range (11-50 microg l(-1)). Whichever the type of treatment, a clear removal during treatment was observed. Solid liquid distribution coefficients K(d) were calculated for untreated sewage. The calculated K(d) values varied between 1300 and 3900 l kg(-1). OP was of minor importance with total influent concentrations below 1microg l(-1). NP and NP(1,2)EO were present in all analysed influents in concentrations between 1 and 35microg l(-1). Effluent concentrations were notably lower than the measured influent concentrations. K(d) values for NP varied between 500 and 6600 l kg(-1), for NP(1)EO between 800 and 2700 l kg(-1) and for NP(2)EO between 100 and 1800 l kg(-1). From the QACs several alkyl benzyl (BAC), dialkyl (DDAC) and trialkyl (ATAC) ammonium chlorides with varying alkyl chain lengths were analysed. Highest total concentrations in the influents to the WWTPs were observed for the BAC-C12 and the ATAC-C16 homologues. Effluent concentrations were notably lower compared to influent concentrations, indicating removal by adsorption and/or biodegradation. The influence of the removal by adsorption increased with increasing alkyl chain length.  相似文献

With rapid urbanisation, the demand for office floor space also increases. Although high-rise buildings are very common in urban areas, study of the rent for different stories in such buildings is relatively rare. Liu (1988) and Grimaud (1989) separately applied agglomeration economies to study the density variation in urban areas. However, these studies assumed that the floor rent in the same building is the same for each story. Such an assumption about floor rent may not fully reflect actual floor rent and, from the perspectives of theoretical completeness and practical usefulness, formulation for different floor rents in high-rise buildings, and their effect on urban density variation should also be considered. This research note extends Ogawa and Fujitas locational potential function (1980) into two dimensions: flat dimension and story dimension. The modification of the locational potential function is then applied to revise Lius model. Finally, the office distribution in a CBD (central business district) is then discussed.Received: 23 October 2001, Accepted: 7 July 2003, JEL Classification: L74, R14, R33This research has been supported by NSC grant 89-2415-H-004-059, which is gratefully acknowledged. A study of energy efficiency of private office buildings in Hong Kong   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A benchmark study of the energy efficiency of private office buildings in Hong Kong was conducted in 2002 because energy efficiency was declining. In the study, private office buildings were divided into five user groups. For each group, a multiple regression model was developed to find the relationship between Energy Use Intensities (EUIs) and other factors, such as operating hours, for normalization and benchmarking purposes. In this paper we make use of the regression results to study the energy efficiency of private office buildings by different grades. In Hong Kong, office buildings are divided into three grades (A, B, and C) based on the quality of the facility, which is reflected in rental values; a Grade A office building denotes expensive luxury. We found that the EUI of Grade A office buildings is the highest, consuming over 50% of the total energy used in office buildings. Recently, the annual EUI of office buildings has improved even though Grade A floor space is increasing. This may be due to the promotion of the energy efficiency program launched in the last decade.  相似文献

The investigation of settled dust is a proven and simple screening-method for considering indoor contamination for semivolatile compounds. Here we investigate the correlation of PCP concentrations in air and freshly settled dust from floors. Air and dust samples were taken from 75 rooms in 30 buildings with suspicion of an application of PCP-containing wood preservatives. Sampling was repeated four times within 18 months. PCP air concentrations were found in the range of <0.3-576 ng m-3 (mean value 25.3 ng m-3, median 2.5 ng m-3). PCP dust concentrations were found in the range of 0.083-79 microg g-1 (mean value 3.5 microg g-1, median 1.1 microg g-1. A weak highly significant correlation (P < 0.0001) with a correlation coefficient of R2 = 0.433, of the PCP concentration in dust with the PCP concentration in air, was observed. Measurement of PCP concentrations in dust, therefore, is a suitable screening method for the evaluation of indoor contamination with PCP. Due to the high dispersion of the data it is not possible to calculate PCP concentrations in air from concentrations in dust although a highly significant correlation of the PCP concentrations in air and dust was found.  相似文献

Allergy to indoor allergens can cause frequent and severe health problems in children. Because little is known about the content of allergens in the indoor environments in Norway, we wanted to assess the levels of cat, dog and mite allergens in schools and day-care centers in Oslo. Allergen levels in dust samples from 155 classrooms and 81 day-care units were measured using commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. Additionally, we measured the levels of endotoxin in 31 day-care units, using the limulus amebocyte lysate test. Most of the dust samples contained detectable amounts of cat and dog allergens. In mattress and floor dust (day-care centers), and curtain and floor dust (schools) the median Fel d 1 levels were 0.17, 0.002, 0.02 and 0.079 microg/m2, while the median Can f 1 levels were 1.7, 0.03, 0.1 and 0.69 microg/m2, respectively. Levels of cat and dog allergens in school floor dust were associated with the number of pupils with animals at home. In contrast, <1% of the samples had measurable levels of the mite allergen Der p 1. Moreover, the levels of endotoxin tended to be higher in dust from floors (1.4 ng/m2) compared with that from mattresses (0.9 ng/m2). PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: To reduce allergen exposure, allergic individuals should be placed in the classes/rooms with the fewest pet owners. Moreover, mattresses in day-care centers are major reservoirs of cat and dog allergens and should be cleaned frequently.  相似文献

Asian dust storms (ADS) originating from the arid deserts of Mongolia and China are a well-known springtime meteorological phenomenon throughout East Asia. The ventilation systems in office utilize air from outside and therefore it is necessary to understand how these dust storms affect the concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 in both the indoor and outdoor air. We measured dust storm pollution particles in an office building using a direct-reading instrument (PC-2 Quartz Crystal Microbalance, QCM) that measured particle size and concentration every 10 min for 1 h, three times a day. A three-fold increase in the concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 in the indoor and outdoor air was recorded during the dust storms. After adjusting for other covariates, autoregression models indicated that PM2.5 and PM10 in the indoor air increased significantly (21.7 μg/m3 and 23.0 μg/m3 respectively) during dust storms. The ventilation systems in high-rise buildings utilize air from outside and therefore the indoor concentrations of fine and coarse particles in the air inside the buildings are significantly affected by outside air pollutants, especially during dust storms.  相似文献

Volatile organic compounds (VOC) in office buildings originate from multiple sources, such as outdoor air, building materials., occupants, office supplies, and office equipment. Many of the VOC found in office buildings are also present in environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), e.g., benzene, toluene, formaldehyde. Measurements made to date in office buildings have been interpreted by some to imply that the contributions of ETS to VOC exposures in office buildings are small. We have made a first order estimate of the contributions of ETS to VOC concentrations based on the VOC content of ETS and a time-dependent mass-balance model. Four different ventilation-infiltration scenarios were modelled for a typical office building. The results indicate that ETS can contribute significantly to total indoor levels of VOC in office buildings, even under moderate ventilation conditions. Ranges of concentrations for three of the four modelled scenarios substantially overlapped measured ranges of the compounds in office buildings. Average daytime concentrations of benzene from ETS, for example, for three of the four modelled scenarios, ranged from 2.7 to 6.2 μg m?3, compared to reported measurements of 1.4 to 8.1 μg m?3 for four office buildings. Under a “worst reasonable” case scenario, the average modelled ETS-contributed concentration of benzene was 33.9 μg m?3 for a 40-hour work week.  相似文献

Laguna de Bay in the Philippines is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia and is considered a primary source of drinking water, but also receives daily discharges of effluent from both domestic and industrial activities. Branched alkylbenzenesulfonates (ABS), which were banned in Europe and withdrawn from the market in the U.S. since the mid-1960s, but not in Southeast Asia, and linear alkylbenzenesulfonates (LAS) are anionic surfactants used in detergent formulations and are therefore main components of effluent discharges. The presence of both LAS and ABS in several water streams in the catchment area of Laguna de Bay was determined using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The concentration levels of LAS (1.2-73 and 2.2-102 microg l(-1)) and ABS (1.1-75 and 1-66 microg l(-1)) in some tributaries of Laguna de Bay and its outlet (Pasig River) to Manila Bay were assessed in December 1999 and March 2000, respectively. The LAS/ABS ratio was calculated as an indication of the extent of the distribution and fate of these surfactants in the surface water. The nearer the location to the metropolitan area of Manila, the higher the levels of LAS and ABS detected in the waters. Moreover, the extent of biodegradation was investigated by monitoring their alkyl homologue distribution and the presence of sulfophenylcarboxylate (SPC) metabolites. Similarly, differences in the levels of SPC and the homologues were apparent at the different sampling points. Presumably, even the quite recalcitrant ABS form SPCs under the conditions present in Southeast Asia. Since wastewater treatment facilities are not well established in developing countries like the Philippines, the call for the use of environmentally friendly chemicals is of even higher significance.  相似文献

Newsham et al. have recently published a re-analysis of energy-consumption data for LEED-certified commercial buildings supplied by the New Buildings Institute (NBI) and US Green Building Council. They find that, on average, LEED buildings use 18-39% less energy per floor area than their conventional counterparts, consistent with and adding clarity to conclusions originally reached by NBI. These conclusions, however, hang on a particular definition of the mean energy intensity of a collection of buildings that is not related to the total energy used by those buildings. Furthermore, site energy considered by Newsham et al. and NBI, unlike source energy used for the EPA's building Energy Star rating, does not account for the energy consumed off-site in generating and delivering electric energy to the building, whose inclusion is crucial for understanding greenhouse gas emission associated with building operation. Here I demonstrate that both the site energy and source energy used by the set of 35 LEED office buildings and Newsham et al.’s matching CBECS office buildings are statistically equivalent. Hence Newsham et al. offer no evidence that LEED-certification has collectively lowered either site or source energy for office buildings.  相似文献

We collected samples of roadside air, automobile exhaust soot, tires, asphalt, and used engine oil in a tropical Asian mega-city, Bangkok, Thailand, and analyzed them for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and hopanes. The concentrations and compositions of PAHs and hopanes were utilized to identify the sources of PAHs in street dust, in which high concentrations of PAHs were reported in our previous study. Weight-based concentrations of total PAHs had the following order: gasoline-powered vehicle soot (2600+/-2900 microg/g; n=4)>diesel-powered vehicle soot (115+/-245 microg/g; n=7) approximately roadside aerosols (101+/-35 microg/g; n=5) approximately used engine oil (97+/-65 microg/g; n=4) approximately tire wear particles (82+/-41 microg/g; n=5)>asphalt (2.3+/-1.6 microg/g; n=3)>street dust (1.1+/-0.8 microg/g; n=10). In cluster analysis, all the source materials fell into different clusters from that in which street dust fell, indicating that multiple source materials contribute to PAHs in the street dust. Multiple regression analysis of PAH profiles and diagnostics of hopane compositions identified tire debris as the major contributor of PAHs to street dust, followed by diesel vehicle exhaust.  相似文献

Samples of household dust and garden soil were collected from twenty households in the vicinity of an ex-mining site in southwest England and from nine households in a control village. All samples were analysed by ICP-MS for pseudo-total arsenic (As) concentrations and the results show clearly elevated levels, with maximum As concentrations of 486 microg g(-1) in housedusts and 471 microg g(-1) in garden soils (and mean concentrations of 149 microg g(-1) and 262 microg g(-1), respectively). Arsenic concentrations in all samples from the mining area exceeded the UK Soil Guideline Value (SGV) of 20 microg g(-1). No significant correlation was observed between garden soil and housedust As concentrations. Bioaccessible As concentrations were determined in a small subset of samples using the Physiologically Based Extraction Test (PBET). For the stomach phase of the PBET, bioaccessibility percentages of 10-20% were generally recorded. Higher percentages (generally 30-45%) were recorded in the intestine phases with a maximum value (for one of the housedusts) of 59%. Data from the mining area were used, together with default values for soil ingestion rates and infant body weights from the Contaminated Land Exposure Assessment (CLEA) model, to derive estimates of As intake for infants and small children (0-6 years old). Dose estimates of up to 3.53 microg kg(-1) bw day(-1) for housedusts and 2.43 microg kg(-1) bw day(-1) for garden soils were calculated, compared to the index dose used for the derivation of the SGV of 0.3 microg kg(-1) bw day(-1) (based on health risk assessments). The index dose was exceeded by 75% (18 out of 24) of the estimated As doses that were calculated for children aged 0-6 years, a group which is particularly at risk from exposure via soil and dust ingestion. The results of the present study support the concerns expressed by previous authors about the significant As contamination in southwest England and the potential implications for human health.  相似文献

On-site home visits, consisting of a home inspection, dust sampling, and questionnaires were conducted in 777 homes belonging to an ongoing birth cohort study in Cincinnati, Ohio. Various home characteristics were investigated, and antigen levels (concentrations [microg/g] and loadings [microg/m(2)]; IU for cockroach allergen) in floor dust samples collected in child's primary activity room were analyzed by ELISA. Monoclonal antibodies were used for the analysis of cat, house dust mite, and cockroach allergens, and polyclonal antibodies for Alternaria and dog antigens. The relationship between the antigen levels and home characteristics was investigated through a generalized multiple regression model. More than half of the homes experienced mold/water damage. Cats and dogs were present in 19.7% and 31.1% of homes, respectively. More than 90% of homes had either carpet or area rug covering their floors. Among 777 homes, 87-92% of homes had measurable amount of Alternaria, cat, and dog allergen/antigen in house dust, whereas only 38% and 14% of homes had measurable levels of house dust mite and cockroach, respectively. Alternaria antigen level in house dust was not associated with visual mold/water damage, which was suspected to be one of the sources for this antigen in homes. Instead, the antigen level was high in samples taken in fall and in homes having dogs implicating that Alternaria antigen appears to be transported from outdoors to indoors. A high level was also measured in homes using a dehumidifier (these homes have experienced excessive humidity) and in-home venting of clothes dryer, which might be associated with microclimate affecting mold growth and spore release. The allergen/antigen level (both concentration and loading) of cat, dog and cockroach was significantly associated with the number of cats and dogs, or the appearance of cockroaches, respectively. High level of house dust mite allergen was measured in bedrooms and in homes using dehumidifier and no central forced air heating system. Having indoor plants was shown to reduce allergen levels. Carpeted floor was found to hold larger amount of antigens than non-carpeted floor. Antigen loading demonstrated more consistent and larger numbers of associations with home characteristics compared to antigen concentration. This study encompassed a wide range of home characteristics and various antigen types. Our findings provide information on home characteristics that can be used for allergen avoidance and in planning future exposure assessment studies.  相似文献

We investigated the associations of fungal and endotoxin levels in office dust with respiratory health in 888 (67% participation) occupants of a water-damaged building. We analyzed floor and chair dusts from 338 workstations for culturable fungi and endotoxin. Based on averages, we ranked each floor of the building as low, medium, or high for occupants' exposure to each of these agents. Multivariate logistic regression models for building-related symptoms included this ranking of fungi and endotoxin, age, gender, race, smoking status, and duration of occupancy. Using floor dust measures, we found significantly increased odds for lower respiratory symptoms [wheeze, chest tightness, attacks of shortness of breath, and attacks of cough: odds ratios (OR) = 1.7 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.02-2.77) to 2.4 (95% CI: 1.29-4.59)], throat irritation [OR = 1.7, (95% CI: 1.06-2.82)], and rash/itchy skin [OR = 3.0, (95% CI: 1.47-6.19)] in the highest fungal exposure group compared to the lowest, with generally linear exposure-response relationships. Nonlinear relationships were observed for many of these symptoms and endotoxin in floor dust. Interaction models showed that endotoxin modified effects of fungi on respiratory symptoms. Our findings of exposure interactions and exposure-response relationships of fungal and endotoxin with increased risk of building-related symptoms contribute to an understanding of the role of microbial agents in building-related asthma and respiratory and systemic symptoms. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Our demonstration of exposure-response relationships between measurements of fungi and/or endotoxin in floor dusts and building-related symptoms implies that microbial agents in floor dust may be a good surrogate measure for dampness-related bioaerosol exposure, considering that measurements of microbial agents in air often fail to demonstrate the associations between exposure and health. In addition, our finding that endotoxin exposure may change the effect of fungal exposure (and vice versa) on respiratory heath suggests that exposure to both fungi and endotoxin should be assessed in epidemiological investigations examining the effect of fungal or endotoxin exposure on respiratory health in indoor environments.  相似文献

Twenty-seven sites, together with 23 household dust sample sites, representing the home environment, and four public room dust sample sites, representing working environment (mainly offices) have been described in this paper. The latter were examined to obtain an approximate reference to the home environment data. All the samples were collected between May and July 1997 by a vacuum-cleaner method, in the city of Warsaw, Poland. The granulometry of the dusts was determined by their separation into seven fractions in the range 8-500 microm. The concentrations of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb, Br and Fe in the samples were investigated in fractions 8-32, 32-63 and 63-125 microm by the EDXRF technique. The results showed higher concentrations of these elements in finer fractions (8-32 microm). The Pb content in the household dusts was found to be unexpectedly low, ranging from 120 microg g(-1) for the 63-125 microm fraction, up to 210 microg g(-1) for the 8-32 microm fraction. Car exhausts could not be determined clearly as the main source of Pb in the indoor household dusts due to the lack of a Pb-Br intercorrelation. In these dusts, only Cr and Zn showed a remarkably high content of 90-100 and 1020-1070 (microg g(-1)), respectively. In the household dusts, strong intercorrelations were present in the three analysed fractions for the metal pairs: Pb-Zn, Pb-Cu, Fe-Cr, and Cu-Cr (weaker). The working environment rooms showed a higher degree of dustiness by 300%, as compared to the dwellings. The dusts collected in the working environment rooms showed slightly higher concentrations of Ni and by 50-100% higher concentrations of: Cu, Zn, Pb, Br than the analysed household dusts.  相似文献

Abstract Residential microbial exposure has been suggested to be involved in the development of asthma. This paper describes bacterial endotoxin and mold β(1→3)-glucan levels in house dust and the relationship to selected home characteristics. Dust was sampled from mattresses and living room and bedroom floors of 25 houses in Germany. Endotoxin and β(1→3)-glucan levels ranged from 200-48,600 EU/g dust (100-32,900 EU/m2 sampled surface) and 182-3,507 μg/g (157-3,652 μg/m2), respectively. Bio-contaminant levels were highest on living room floors and lowest in mattresses. Dust, endotoxin and β(1→3)-glucan levels were 2–3 times higher on living room floors of centrally heated houses built after 1970 compared to older individually heated houses. This was not found for mattresses and bedroom floors. No associations between biocontaminant levels and other selected home characteristics (temperature, relative humidity, damp spots and insulation of windows) were found. β(1→3)-glucan levels were associated with total culturable fungi (per m2) in house dust, as well as with the fungal genus Alternaria (per g dust and per m2). In conclusion endotoxin and β(1→3)-glucan were readily detectable in house dust and significantly associated with heating system and/or age of the home.  相似文献

Air and dust samples were collected on two floors of an office building during a double-blind particle intervention study to examine spatial and temporal variability of airborne endotoxin over a period of weeks, and to characterize endotoxin activity and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) content in carpet and chair dust. Air samples were collected on multiple days within and across weeks. Dust samples were collected from carpets and chairs one day per week for three weeks. Endotoxin was measured using a Limulus assay. Dust samples were analyzed for LPS by determination of 3-hydroxy fatty acids (3-OHFAs) using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The geometric mean (geometric standard deviation) for 96 indoor air samples was 0.24 (1.6) EU/m3. Significant within-floor spatial variation of airborne endotoxin was found (P < 0.0001, n = 80). Temporal variability of airborne endotoxin was not significant across weeks. Mean (+/- SD) endotoxin levels in carpet dust (59 +/- 9.3 EU/mg dust, n = 12) and in chair dust (38 +/- 7.7 EU/mg dust, n = 10) were significantly different (P < 0.001). Carbon chain length-dependent differences in 3-OHFA levels by dust source and floor were found. Enhanced air filtration did not significantly affect airborne endotoxin (P = 0.62); however, total dust mass and total endotoxin in carpet dust samples increased significantly after enhanced surface cleaning (P < 0.01). These findings suggest that spatial variability, dust source, and surface cleaning may influence building occupant exposures to endotoxin.  相似文献
