This paper introduces a new approach for joint convolutional coding and decision feedback equalization (DPE). To minimize error propagation, the DFE uses a combination of soft decisions and delayed tentative decisions to cancel intersymbol interference (ISI). Soft decisions are obtained by passing the DFE output through a (soft) nonlinear device. This simple method is shown to perform almost as well as an optimum soft feedback approach on wireless channels with diversity. Tentative decisions from the Viterbi decoder are used to cancel ISI due to multipath with large delays, thus remedying the increasing effect of error propagation in channels with large delay spreads. We consider the use of this soft/delayed feedback DFE (S/D-DFE) technique in broadband wireless channels (with delay spreads up to several tens of the symbol period) typical in high-bitrate mobile data applications. Simulation results indicate that the proposed joint coding and S/D-DFE technique performs to within 1-2 dB [in required signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)] of an ideal coded DFE without error propagation. When combined with antenna diversity and a reduced-complexity DFE concept with adaptive feedforward tap assignment, it provides high packet throughput against Rayleigh fading, severe delay spreads, and high Doppler rates  相似文献

The authors investigate the bit error rate (BER) improvement of partial-response continuous-phase modulation (PRCPM) signals in mobile radio channels, when decision feedback equalization (DFE) to cancel the effect of intersymbol interference (ISI) of one adjacent bit is added to the limiter discriminator. A closed-form expression for the average probability of error as a function of the Doppler shift is derived for discriminator detection with decision feedback. Numerical results are presented to compare the BER performance of discriminator detection with and without feedback equalization  相似文献

A new phase precoding technique is developed to combat the intersymbol interference (ISI) resulting from a frequency-selective slowly fading channel in a personal communication system using quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK). Based on a new dimension partitioning technique, the precoder predistorts only the phase of the transmitted signal to keep a constant transmitted signal amplitude and, therefore, to ensure the stability of the precoder even in equalizing a nonminimum-phase channel. Under the constraint of the constant amplitude, the dimension partitioning method is developed to guarantee the possibility of correct detection for all transmitted information symbols and to further improve the transmission accuracy by increasing the size of the decision regions. Analytical and simulation results demonstrate that over frequency selective Rayleigh and Rician fading channels, the system using the proposed channel precoder can achieve a bit error rate (BER) comparable with that using a conventional decision feedback equalizer (DFE). The precoder can outperform the DFE in an indoor environment where there is a strong direct propagation path. The main advantage of using the precoder is that the impairment of ISI due to multipath propagation on the transmission performance can be mitigated without increasing the complexity of the portable unit receiver. The proposed technique is especially useful for personal communications, where ISI due to multipath fading channels can severely deteriorate the BER transmission performance and where the simplicity of portable units is a vital characteristic of the system  相似文献

There is great interest in the use of decision feedback equalization (DFE) to mitigate the effects of intersymbol interference (ISI) on wireless multipath fading channels. The coefficients of a DFE feedforward filter (FFF) and feedback filter (FBF) are usually adjusted based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion. The equalizer coefficients can be calculated by recursive adaptation or by direct computation based on a channel estimate. The equivalence of the simultaneous and separate MMSE optimization of the FFF and FBF of a finite-length DFE is established  相似文献

A communication scheme using binary FM with noncoherent limiter-discriminator detection has been well known. Up to now, the improvement of bit error rate at the receiver side has been carried out through the bandwidth optimization of the IF filter, the decision feedback equalization (DFE), or simple two-state maximum likelihood sequence estimator (MLSE). This channel is inherently the intersymbol interference (ISI) channel due to the premodulation baseband filtering as well as the narrowband IF filtering. So the sequence estimation scheme using the Viterbi algorithm can be applied successfully, although the channel is not additive white Gaussian and maximum likelihood in the strict sense. In this paper, through computer simulations, we examine the actual BER improvement of the sequence estimation scheme with multiple-state trellis especially for MSK and GMSK signals. We mainly consider static AWGN and frequency nonselective Rician fading channels. Consequently, by adjusting the IF filter bandwidth, very large estimation gains are obtained compared to the conventional DFE or MLSE detector for AWGN and Rician fading channels. This scheme does not produce large demodulation delay and is implemented only by adding the signal processing part to the final stage of the receiver. This scheme seems to be very useful for any applications including satellite mobile channels  相似文献

In a high-rate indoor wireless personal communication system, the delay spread due to multipath propagation results in intersymbol interference (ISI) which can significantly increase the transmission bit error rate (BER). Decision feedback equalizer (DFE) is an efficient approach to combating the ISI. Recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm with a constant forgetting factor is often used to update the tap-coefficient vector of the DFE for ISI-free transmission. However, using a constant forgetting factor may not yield the optimal performance in a nonstationary environment. In this paper, an adaptive algorithm is developed to obtain a time-varying forgetting factor. The forgetting factor is used with the RLS algorithm in a DFE for calculating the tap-coefficient vector in order to minimize the squared equalization error due to input noise and due to channel dynamics. The algorithm is derived based on the argument that, for optimal filtering, the equalization errors should be uncorrelated. The adaptive forgetting factor can be obtained based on on-line equalization error measurements. Computer simulation results demonstrate that better transmission performance can be achieved by using the RLS algorithm with the adaptive forgetting factor than that with a constant forgetting factor previously proposed for optimal steady-state performance or a variable forgetting factor for a near deterministic system.  相似文献

The decision feedback equalizer (DFE), three-level eye, and maximum-likelihood sequence estimator (MLSE) decision schemes for frequency demodulation of 16-kb/s GMSK signals are evaluated. Laboratory experimental results on bit error rate (BER) and block error rate (BKER) performances are presented. In additive white Gaussian noise channels, two-bit DFE achieves the best BER performance, whereas MLSE is the best for cochannel interference-limited channels. BKER performance was also examined. The three-level eye decision is a bit-by-bit decision, and thus has superior performance because there is no error propagation. In fading environments, however, this superiority tends to diminish because bursty errors due to deep fades predominate rather than error propagation effects. Some of the laboratory experimental results have been confirmed with field experiments at a 1.45-GHz carrier frequency  相似文献

This paper proposes a new spatio-temporal equalization method, which simultaneously utilizes an adaptive antenna array and a decision feedback equalizer (DFE). For effective spatio-temporal equalization with less computational cost, how to split equalization functionality into spatial processing, and temporal processing is quite important. One of the answers which we have given is “incoming signals with larger time delays should be cancelled at the spatial equalization part.” The weights of both adaptive antenna array elements and taps of DFE are calculated only using the estimated channel impulse response, therefore, it requires no information on direction of arrival (DoA). We show the performance of the proposed system in multipath fading channels often encountered in indoor wireless environments and discuss the attainable bit error rate (BER), antenna patterns, and the computational complexity in comparison with other equalization methods such as spatial equalization and temporal equalization  相似文献

This paper presents a novel phase precoding (pre-equalization) technique to equalize frequency-selective Rayleigh and Rician slowly fading channels for personal communication systems using phase modulation. In order to achieve intersymbol interference (ISI)-free transmission, the precoding technique pre-distorts the signal transmitted from a base station to a portable unit. The novelty of the technique lies in using a spiral curve design: (1) to ensure the stability of the precoder even in equalizing a non-minimum-phase channel; (2) to obtain an ISI-free received signal; and (3) to keep a constant transmitted signal amplitude. Using the precoder can improve the bit-error-rate (BER) transmission performance without increasing the complexity of the portable unit receiver. The BER performance of coherent quadrature phase-shift-keying (QPSK) with the channel pre-equalization is analyzed theoretically for both Rayleigh and Rician fading channels. Analytical and simulation results demonstrate that coherent QPSK using the proposed channel precoder has a significantly lower BER than that using a conventional decision-feedback equalizer (DFE) because the precoder does not suffer from error propagation  相似文献

In this paper, trellis-codedM-ary CPFSK with noncoherent envelope detection and adaptive channel equalization are investigated to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of microcellular digital wireless communications systems. For the same spectral efficiency, the trellis-coded modulation (TCM) schemes studied outperform minimum shift keying (MSK) with noncoherent or differentially coherent detection in Rayleigh fading channels. For the case of frequency-selective fading channels, adaptive channel equalization is applied to mitigate the time-variant intersymbol interference (ISI). A new equalizer structure is proposed which, in its feedback path, makes use of fractionally spaced signal samples instead of symbol-spaced hard decisions on transmitted symbols. Computer simulation results indicate that the soft-decision feedback equalizer (SDFE) can significantly improve the system's performance.  相似文献

High-speed serial link receivers based on analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) provide better programmability with different channel characteristics and the possibility of employing powerful signal equalization techniques in the digital domain. However, complexity and power consumption are still major issues in adopting such receivers in high-speed applications when compared to traditional binary or mixed-signal approaches. Embedded decision feedback equalization (DFE) before ADC quantization can relax the design requirements of both the ADC and post-ADC digital processing. This paper studies the impact of embedded analog DFE on voltage margin improvement of an ADC-based receiver through worst-case analysis. An analytical expression for the link bit-error-rate (BER) with analog DFE is derived and validated through simulations. An empirical study is conducted that evaluates the achievable BER of embedded analog DFE as a function of the channel inter-symbol interference (ISI) and ADC resolution. A channel-dependent parameter is introduced and employed to quantify the BER improvement achieved by embedding analog DFE in a receiver. A prototype receiver with embedded DFE is designed and laid out in a 130 nm CMOS process and achieves 4.64-bits peak ENOB and 4.08 pJ/conv.-step FOM at a 1.6-GS/s sampling rate. The BER performance of the receiver over high-loss FR4 channels at 1.6 Gb/s is evaluated and used to validate the simulation results.  相似文献

Indoor high-speed wireless data networks encounter signal fading and delay-spread multipath propagation. Hence, the realization of low error rate transmission requires measures to combat the performance degradation due to both signal fading and intersymbol interference (ISI). Receiver diversity has been known to be an efficient way of coping with the former problem, while adaptive equalization could be used to mitigate the effects of the latter. Incorporation of receiver diversity with adaptive equalization is therefore desirable. We propose a novel selection-diversity approach with an adaptive decision-feedback equalizer (DFE). In this method, selection is done on a symbol-by-symbol basis such that the output of the branch with the lowest estimated a posteriori probability of error is used as the final decision. This final (and hence more reliable) decision is used to adapt the DFE for all diversity branches. It is shown in this paper that the proposed selection rule is optimal for selection-diversity in the maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) sense. A very simple selection metric can be derived from this selection rule and practical ways of computing the selection metric are also presented. Simulation results show that the proposed method is very efficient. It is capable of achieving almost the same performance as an optimal [least squares (LS)], but computationally intensive, combining diversity approach. Furthermore, at an average bit error rate (BER) of 10-4, a gain of approximately 1.25 dB can be achieved over a previously proposed selection-diversity equalization approach  相似文献

This paper presents the performance of a pseudoerror monitoring technique for a 16 QAM 140 Mbit/s digital radio in presence of multipath dispersive fading. The so-called pseudoerrors, generated by means of a threshold modification of two, namely, secondary receivers are entered into an extrapolating function to obtain a fast bit error ratio (BER) calculation. A counting time of 10 ms was retained in order to follow fading depth changes up to 100 dB/s and fading notch speeds up to 300 MHz/s approximately. We have considered three structures for the receiver: without equalization, with IF amplitude equalization, and decision feedback equalization (DFE). The results obtained show the estimated and real BER within a margin that includes the two recommended CCIR values: 10-3and10-6. In particular, the estimated signature obtained in the case of using IF equalization reveals that this fast BER calculation could be an effective choice to control a frequency diversity switch, even in the presence of a fading activity with rapid variations.  相似文献

The next-generation wireless communication systems are expected to support high-speed data transmission. Associated with high transmission rates, however, is the problem of multipath intersymbol interference (ISI) due to frequency-selective fading. Decision feedback equalization (DFE) and antenna diversity combining are two practical techniques for combating multipath ISI. Through simulations we investigate the performance of diversity combining, together with DFE, under various numbers of antenna branches and equalization taps, in a quasistationary frequency-selective fading environment with additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and cochannel interference (CCI). We consider joint optimization combining and power selection diversity combining. We simulate the combiner, using quaternary phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation with up to four antenna branches. Our results show that using antenna diversity and DFE with joint optimization combining provides performance improvement with lower computational complexity, as compared to that of using either DFE or diversity combining alone for combating ISI

Iterative equalization using optimal multiuser detector and optimal channel decoder in coded CDMA systems improves the bit error rate (BER) performance tremendously. However, given large number of users employed in the system over multipath channels causing significant multiple-access interference (MAI) and intersymbol interference (ISI), the optimal multiuser detector is thus prohibitively complex. Therefore, the sub-optimal detectors such as low-complexity linear and non-linear equalizers have to be considered. In this paper, a novel low-complexity block decision feedback equalizer (DFE) is proposed for the synchronous CDMA system. Based on the conventional block DFE, the new method is developed by computing the reliable extrinsic log-likelihood ratio (LLR) using two consecutive received samples rather than one received sample in the literature. At each iteration, the estimated symbols by the equalizer is then saved as a priori information for next iteration. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed low-complexity block DFE algorithm offers good performance gain over the conventional block DFE.  相似文献

The paper investigates adaptive equalization of time-dispersive mobile radio fading channels and develops a robust high performance Bayesian decision feedback equalizer (DFE). The characteristics and implementation aspects of this Bayesian DFE are analyzed, and its performance is compared with those of the conventional symbol or fractional spaced DFE and the maximum likelihood sequence estimator (MLSE). In terms of computational complexity, the adaptive Bayesian DFE is slightly more complex than the conventional DFE but is much simpler than the adaptive MLSE. In terms of error rate in symbol detection, the adaptive Bayesian DFE outperforms the conventional DFE dramatically. Moreover, for severely fading multipath channels, the adaptive MLSE exhibits significant degradation from the theoretical optimal performance and becomes inferior to the adaptive Bayesian DFE  相似文献
