Tabanids are among the most free-living adult flies which play a role as livestock pests. A single blood meal is used as a source of energy for egg production (100-1,000 eggs per meal), and females of certain species can oviposit before a blood meal is obtained (autogeny). Therefore, the maintenance of annual populations requires successful oviposition by only 2% of females. Wild animal blood sources are usually available to maintain annual tabanid populations. Larval habitats are also independent of domestic livestock. Thus, the use of repellents or partial repellents is the only effective chemical strategy to reduce the incidence of tabanids on livestock. Permanent traps (and possibly treated silhouette traps) can be employed to intercept flies. Selective grazing or confinement can also reduce the impact of tabanids. Stable fly adults are dependent on vertebrate blood for survival and reproduction, but the amount of time spent in contact with the host is relatively small. Stable fly larvae develop in manure, spilled feed and decaying vegetation. Management of larval habitats by sanitation is the key to stable fly control. Treatment of animals with residual insecticides can aid in control; thorough application to the lower body parts of livestock is important. Proper use of modified traps, using either treated targets or solar-powered electrocution grids, can be effective in reducing stable fly populations. Adult horn flies spend the major part of their time on the host, and the larvae are confined to bovid manure. Therefore, almost any form of topical insecticide application for livestock is effective against horn flies, in the absence of insecticide resistance. Treatments should be applied when economic benefit is possible; economic gains are associated with increased weaning weights and weight gains of yearling and growing cattle. Oral chemical treatments (insect growth regulators or insecticides) administered at appropriate rates via bolus, water, food or mineral mixtures can inhibit horn fly larval development. However, adult horn fly movement among cattle herds limits the use of larval control for horn fly population management. The augmentation of native parasites, predators and competitors has been attempted and even promoted for horn fly and stable fly control, but evidence for the success of such programmes is equivocal.  相似文献

Resistance to fenitrothion was investigated in housefly populations in Danish farms 1964--72 in connection with trials of fenitrothion, dimethoate and other organophosphorus compounds for fly control. Resistance was tested by topical application and expressed as resistance ratios, R/S, relative to normal susceptible strains. In 1964--70 fly populations on farms sprayed with fenitrothion (one year each) only developed mode-rate fenitrothion-resistance, R/S at LD 95 below 21 and fly control was generally satisfactory. However, in 1972 high fenitrothion-resistance, R/S 100--400 at LD 95, was found in several fly populations, both on farms treated with fenitrothion and on farms treated with dimethoate, fenitrothion, or bromophos. In all cases the high fenitrothion-resistance was associated with high resistance to dimethoate. Some characteristics of this, apparently complex, resistance are discussed including the effect of certain synergists. Resistance to fenitrothion in Danish flies is only partly reduced by pretreatment with high dosages of sesamex, which inhibits microsomal detoxication, and very little by TBTP (S, S, S tributyl phosphorotrithioate), which inhibits other types of break-down of organophosphorus compounds, e.g. by ali-esterases. The occurrence of fenitrothion- resistance in field populations of houseflies in other regions is briefly reviewed. Widespread, partly very high, resistance has recently been reported from Japan.  相似文献

Haematobia irritans (L.) horn flies recently have immigrated into Argentina from Brazil or Paraguay. Bioassays were conducted with fenvalerate to develop baseline information on pyrethroid susceptibility. Four populations tested in 1994 and 1995 were more susceptible than a laboratory strain of horn fly not exposed to insecticides since 1970, but 3 populations from Corrientes Province tested in 1996 were moderately resistant to fenvalerate, with resistance ratios ranging from 3 to 26. Argentine horn fly populations were exposed to pyrethroid treatments of pour-on, spray, and dip formulations for 4 yr before developing resistance. Horn flies in the United States developed pyrethroid resistance after 2 yr of treatment with pyrethroid ear tags.  相似文献

Insecticide resistance often is blamed for failures of insecticides to control cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis (Bouché). Yet the genetics and adaptive advantage of resistance traits remain unexamined. Lethal doses of insecticides that kill 50% of the population fluctuate 7-fold within a cat flea strain. Many reports of flea resistance may be attributable to variable mortality from effects of solvents, substrates, humidities, temperatures, colonization, and ages of fleas. Resistance ratios (ratios of lethal doses of a resistant to a susceptible strain) are < 690-fold in fleas; lower than many other arthropods. This, plus strain variability, hinders resistance detection. Relationships between resistance levels, control failures, and health threats are unclear. Insensitive acetylcholinesterase, knockdown recovery, glutathione transferase conjugation, and mixed function oxidase/cytochrome P450 are demonstrated resistance mechanisms in cat fleas. Ecological genetics of resistance in cat fleas probably involves flea transfer among hosts, host movements, refugia, founder effects, and mortality from abiotic factors. Understanding cat flea resistance requires population monitoring before, during, and after insecticide treatments using conventional and rapid molecular bioassays. Sustained insecticide release devices such as flea collars and long-lived insecticide residues for premises possibly contribute to the development of resistance. New systemic and topical insecticides, especially when given prophylactically, may act similarly. Eliminating insecticides prevents insecticide resistance but necessitates application of biorational tactics incorporating mechanical, environmental, and cultural controls. Using high temperatures, low humidities, host grooming and such tactics as decreasing doses, increasing action thresholds, rotating insecticides, and leaving spatial and temporal refugia may suppress cat flea resistance.  相似文献

An initial evaluation of insecticide barrier spraying directed against sand fly vectors of cutaneous leishmaniasis was done in a nonclimax forested area with heavy undergrowth in Peten, Guatemala. A 100 m-wide swath of vegetation was sprayed once with a 1:3 mixture of cyfluthrin insecticide and a palm oil carrier using back-pack sprayers to simulate a central cantonment area in one site while another site remained as an untreated control. Prior to spraying and throughout 87 days post-treatment, sand fly populations were monitored at both sites with light traps set at ground and canopy levels at 50-m intervals radiating out from the centers of the cantonments, 150-m in the four cardinal directions. A total of 2,876 female sand flies were captured, representing 16 species. Three species, Brumptomyia galindoi, Lutzomyia panamensis, and Lu, ovallesi, comprised 70% of the total collection. The single insecticide barrier significantly reduced sand flies from reaching the cantonment area for more than 80 days, while sand fly populations outside the treated cantonment and in the untreated (control) cantonment remained high (52 sand flies in the treated cantonment versus 235 sand flies in the untreated cantonment).  相似文献

The population of Culex quinquefasciatus breeding in the Pinheiros River (S. Paulo, Brazil) has been controlled with organophosphates since 1980. However, the biting has constituted a continual nuisance to the human population who live in the vicinity of the river. The occurrence of insecticide resistance to at least two organophosphates and one carbamate (malathion, fenitrothion and propoxur, respectively) to this insect population is reported. The results show the need to develop an insecticide management program. The susceptibility to permethrin (pyretroid) suggests the possibility of using this class of insecticide should the need for replacement of the insecticide in use arise.  相似文献

Insecticide resistance has been a problem in all insect groups that serve as vectors of emerging diseases. Although mechanisms by which insecticides become less effective are similar across all vector taxa, each resistance problem is potentially unique and may involve a complex pattern of resistance foci. The main defense against resistance is close surveillance of the susceptibility of vector populations. We describe the mechanisms of insecticide resistance, as well as specific instances of resistance emergence worldwide, and discuss prospects for resistance management and priorities for detection and surveillance.  相似文献

The effects of exposure of Culex pipiens larvae to sublethel concentrations of larvicides on uptake, development of Wuchereria bancrofti, survival rate and reproduction of filaria-infected mosquitoes were investigated. Fourth instar larvae of Cx. pipiens were exposed to LC40 of the surfactant Triton X-100, the insect growth regulator DPX alone or combined with LC10 of the surfactant and permethrin alone or combined with LC10 of the surfactant. Adults that survived insecticide treatments and controls were infected by allowing them to feed on microfilaremic volunteers. Significant reduction in the uptake of microfilaria was observed in groups treated with Triton X-100 alone or combined either with permethrin or DPX when compared to control. The overall infection and infective rates were significantly reduced in mosquitoes treated with Triton X-100 either alone or combined with permethrin. Treatment with Triton X-100 and DPX prolonged the extrinsic incubation period (EIP) and retarded the development of filarial larvae, while permethrin either alone or combined with Triton X-100 and DPX combined with Triton X-100 shortened the EIP. All larvicides reduced the number of infective larvae (L3)/mosquito and induced deformities among he different parasite stages, especially in mosquitoes treated with combination of permethrin and Triton X-100 or mixture of DPX and Triton X-100 where 36% and 54.9% respectively of L3S were deformed. In treated mosquitoes, a low percentage of L3S was detected in the head and proboscis region while the majority was trapped in the thoracic region. The survival rates of mosquitoes were reduced in cases treated with permethrin, DPX and Triton X-100 while treatment with mixture of DPX and Triton X-100 induced higher rate of mortalities when compared to control. Egg production of filaria- infected Cx. pipiens was significantly reduced in mosquitoes treated with DPX and Triton X-100. It was observed that the addition of Triton X-100 to DPX or to permethrin significantly reduced egg production. The results suggest that sublethal concentrations of larvicides especially Triton X-100 applied to 4th instar larvae of Cx. pipiens could effectively interfere with the development of W. bancrofti in Cx. pipiens and reduced the survival rate and fecundity of the vector.  相似文献

PURPOSE: To report two patients with severe fungal corneal ulcers who were treated successfully with topical amphotericin B ointment. METHODS: Two eyes of two patients developed corneal ulcers and hypopyon after corneal foreign body removal. Aspergillus fumigatus and Fusarium solani were isolated in Patients 1 and 2, respectively. By antifungal susceptibility testing, amphotericin B was shown to have the lowest minimal inhibitory concentration. RESULT: Topical administration of amphotericin B ointment resulted in dramatic improvement in fungal corneal ulcers. CONCLUSIONS: Antifungal susceptibility tests may aid with selection of antifungal agents. Amphotericin B ointment is one of the promising therapies for keratomycosis caused by antimycotic-resistant fungi.  相似文献

A polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based rapid screening procedure was developed to test individual horn flies, Haematobia irritans irritans (L.), for the presence of a specific nucleotide substitution in the sodium channel gene sequence that has been associated with pyrethroid resistance. By a systematic optimization of reaction conditions and judicious choice of PCR primers differing in DNA sequence by a single nucleotide, we identified pyrethroid-susceptible or resistant sodium channel alleles in individual flies. Laboratory and field populations were examined by both the PCR assay and conventional filter paper bioassays with the pyrethroid cyhalothrin to verify that populations containing greater proportions of individuals with the resistant sodium channel allele DNA sequence also had higher bioassay LC50 values. The PCR assay for resistance alleles gave definitive information on the genotype of an individual fly and detected the presence of heterozygous individuals that might serve as reservoirs of resistance genes in field populations.  相似文献

A trial to compare the effect of military clothing treated by high-pressure spray with permethrin or placebo on the incidence of malaria in Royal Thai Army troops was conducted in northeastern Thailand. Bioassays of treated clothing using laboratory-reared Anopheles dirus females showed permethrin remained in the treated fabric for up to 90 days. Both permethrin- and placebo-treated uniform shirts provided > 84% protection from biting An. dirus in laboratory bioassays for the duration of the study. In laboratory tests, knockdown of An. dirus exposed to permethrin-treated cloth fell to < 20% after 3 hand washes, despite the presence of 28.7-59.9% of the original dose of permethrin. The use of permethrin-treated uniforms without adjunct application of topical repellents did not reduce malaria in Thai troops in an operational setting where incidence during 6 months was as high as 412 cases/1,000 in spite of chemoprophylaxis and use of untreated bednets.  相似文献

The insecticide components of a previously developed integrated pest management system for smokybrown cockroaches, Periplaneta fuliginosa (Serville), were tested individually and at reduced application rates in 4 separate trials over 2 yr. A 2-bait combination (pellet and gel baits) did not significantly reduce cockroach abundance more than a single constituent bait alone. A targeted spray of trelamethrin was significantly less effective than a 2-bait combination. Residual activity of insecticides was determined with American cockroaches, P. americana (L.), in a laboratory bioassay. Chlorpyrifos wettable powder remained active < 12 d in the field, after which time its activity was not different from an experimental control (no insecticide residues), whereas chlorpyrifos pellet and hydramethylnon paste baits retained initial activity for > 27 d. Nematodes [Steinernema carpocapsae (Weiser)] applied as a spray solution did not effect the abundance of smokybrown cockroaches, and no cockroaches were recovered that exhibited nematode infection. Time needed to apply various insecticide treatments did not differ substantially (15-25 min per house), even for lower application rates.  相似文献

A 30-min exposure to intact biting flies (stable flies) induced an opioid-mediated analgesia in fly-naive male deer mice, whereas exposure to either altered biting flies whose biting mouthparts were removed or nonbiting house flies had no significant effects. However, mice that were previously exposed to intact stable flies for 30 min exhibited significant analgesia when exposed 24–168 hr later to stable flies whose biting parts were removed, but not to nonbiting house flies. Administration of the specific N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist NPC 12626 to fly-naive mice before exposure to intact flies, although not significantly reducing the analgesic response, blocked the subsequent conditioned analgesia. Naloxone, which blocked the intact biting fly-induced analgesia, did not alter the acquisition of the conditioned analgesic response to the altered stable flies. Studies were carried out in Tak Province, northwest Thailand to determine repellency and killing effects of four commercially available pyrethroids etofenprox, deltamethrin, lambdacyhalothrin and permethrin treated mosquito nets on field malaria vector populations in experimental huts and local houses. The studies reveal that all four test pyrethroids have a highly repellency effect. Repellency ratio between lifted and torn nets also showed some different among the four pyrethroids. Mosquito net treated with 0.3 g/m2 permethrin was most toxic to mosquito followed by 0.02 g/m2 deltamathrin, etofenprox 0.3 g/m2 and 0.02 g/m2 lambdacyhalothrin. However, careful consideration for future use should also include problem of cross-resistance, persistence of chemicals and also type of mosquito net material.  相似文献

Quantitative and qualitative changes of acetylcholinesterase can affect the sensitivity of insects to insecticides. First, the amount of acetylcholinesterase in the central nervous system is important in Drosophila melanogaster, flies which overexpress the enzyme are more resistant than wild-type flies. On the contrary, flies which express low levels of acetylcholinesterase are more susceptible. An overproduction of acetylcholinesterase outside the central nervous system also protects against organophosphate poisoning, that is, flies producing a soluble acetylcholinesterase, secreted in the haemolymph, are resistant to organophosphates. Second, resistance can also result from a qualitative modification of acetylcholinesterase. Four mutations have been identified in resistant strains: Phe115 to Ser, Ileu199 to Val, Gly303 to Ala and Phe368 to Tyr. Each of these mutations led to a different pattern of resistance and combinations between these mutations led to highly resistant enzymes.  相似文献

Of the three-quarters of a million service personnel involved in the Persian Gulf War, approximately 30,000 have complained of neurological symptoms of unknown etiology. One contributing factor to the emergence of such symptoms may be the simultaneous exposure to multiple agents used to protect the health of service personnel, in particular, the anti-nerve agent pyridostigmine bromide (PB; 3-dimethylaminocarbonyloxy-N-methylpyridinium bromide), the insect repellent DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide), and the insecticide permethrin (3-(2,2-dichloro-ethenyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxylic acid (3-phenoxyphenyl)methyl ester). This study investigated neurotoxicity produced in hens by individual or simultaneous exposure to these agents (5 d/wk for 2 months to 5 mg/kg/d PB in water, po; 500 mg/kg/d DEET, neat, sc; and 500 mg/kg/d permethrin in corn oil, sc). At these dosages, exposure to single compounds resulted in minimal toxicity. Combinations of two agents produced greater neurotoxicity than that caused by individual agents. Neurotoxicity was further enhanced following concurrent administration of all three agents. We hypothesize that competition for liver and plasma esterases by these compounds leads to their decreased breakdown and increased transport of the parent compound to nervous tissues. Thus, carbamylation of peripheral esterases by PB reduces the hydrolysis of DEET and permethrin and increases their availability to the nervous system. In effect, PB "pumps" more DEET and permethrin into the central nervous system. Consistent with this hypothesis, hens exposed to the combination of the three agents exhibited neuropathological lesions with several characteristics similar to those previously reported in studies of near-lethal doses of DEET and permethrin. If this hypothesis is correct, then blood and liver esterases play an important "buffering" role in protecting against neurotoxicity in the population at large. It also suggests that individuals with low plasma esterase activity may be predisposed to neurologic deficits produced by exposure to certain chemical mixtures.  相似文献

In the Upper Rhine Valley (Germany), Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis has been widely used against floodwater mosquitoes over an area of approximately 500 km2 for more than 10 years. The susceptibility of larvae of Aedes vexans field populations in 3 untreated (Lake Constance) and 3 treated areas (Upper Rhine Valley) was assessed by means of bioassays with B.t.i. (Bactimos WP, 6,000 AAU/mg), following WHO guidelines. Log-probit analyses and statistical evaluations of the data showed that the LC50 values as well as slopes of bioassays of the larvae deriving from the different areas showed no significant differences. Two populations in the treated area were even more susceptible than populations from the untreated areas. These results have been confirmed by resistance ratios, which were less than one in all tests carried out.  相似文献

We tested a modified Beilstein method for detecting pyrethroids on bednets under laboratory conditions using an emulsifiable concentrate of permethrin (50 EC) for viability as a simple standardized field test and to judge its reliability for detecting different insecticide doses. At the recommended doses of permethrin (0.5 g/m2), sensitivity was near 100%, even when small pieces of fabric were tested and time of extraction was limited. In unwashed nets sensitivity stayed high (80-95%) down to 0.1 g active ingredient/m2. In untreated nets false positives were rare (0-2%). The test could become a valuable tool in vector control programmes: it is cheap, easy to learn and to perform. The Lot Quality Assurance Sampling method, using an upper and lower performance threshold, could be applied for monitoring the impregnation campaigns.  相似文献

We assessed exposure to pesticides, farming, well water use, and rural living as risk factors for Parkinson's disease (PD) in a population-based case-control study consisting of men and women > or = 50 years of age who had primary medical care at Henry Ford Health System in metropolitan Detroit. Enrolled PD patients (n = 144) and control subjects (n = 464) were frequency-matched for age, race, and sex. When adjusted for these variables and smoking status, there was a significant association of occupational exposure to herbicides (odds ratio [OR], 4.10; 95% CI, 1.37, 12.24) and insecticides (OR, 3.55; 95% CI, 1.75, 7.18) with PD, but no relation was found with fungicide exposure. Farming as an occupation was significantly associated with PD (OR, 2.79; 95% CI, 1.03, 7.55), but there was no increased risk of the disease with rural or farm residence or well water use. The association of occupational exposure to herbicides or insecticides with PD remained after adjustment for farming. The association of farming with PD was maintained after adjustment for occupational herbicide exposure and was of borderline significance after adjustment for occupational insecticide exposure. These results suggest that PD is associated with occupational exposure to herbicides and insecticides and to farming and that the risk of farming cannot be accounted for by pesticide exposure alone.  相似文献

A novel biodegradable device, designed for long-lasting residual effectiveness of feeding stimulant (sugar) and insecticide (dimethoate) against apple maggot files and other insects, was formulated. The device is an 8-cm diameter fruit-mimicking sphere, consisting of 42-50% sugar entrapped in a mixture of gelatinized corn flour and wheat flour in the presence of glycerin, and coated with a layer of latex paint containing dimethoate and sugar. We found that the outer layer of paint prevents cracking of the sphere upon drying and creates a barrier to control the release of both sugar and dimethoate. Releases of each ingredient were screened first by chemical analysis and then by bioassays in the laboratory and in field cages against apple maggot flies. Chemical analysis demonstrated strong potential for controlled release of water-soluble feeding stimulant and water-insoluble insecticide measured as a function of the amount of rainfall and duration of exposure time. Field results showed greater than 70% insecticidal activity after 11 weeks of sphere exposure in an orchard. This device has the potential to be used for a variety of insect-control applications through manipulating its shape, color and texture into forms known to be attractive to target insects, and by employing various toxicants designed to be effective against such insects.  相似文献
