Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is a promising technology for electricity generation. Sulfur-free syngas from a gas-cleaning unit serves as fuel for SOFC in integrated gasification fuel cell (IGFC) power plants. It converts the chemical energy of fuel gas directly into electric energy, thus high efficiencies can be achieved. The outputs from SOFC can be utilized by heat recovery steam generator (HRSG), which drives the steam turbine for electricity production. The SOFC stack model was developed using the process flow sheet simulator Aspen Plus, which is of the equilibrium type. Various ranges of syngas properties gathered from different literature were used for the simulation. The results indicate a trade-off efficiency and power with respect to a variety of SOFC inputs. The HRSG located after SOFC was included in the current simulation study with various operating parameters. This paper describes IGFC power plants, particularly the optimization of HRSG to improve the efficiency of the heat recovery from the SOFC exhaust gas and to maximize the power production in the steam cycle in the IGFC system. HRSG output from different pressure levels varies depending on the SOFC output. The steam turbine efficiency was calculated for measuring the total power plant output. The aim of this paper is to provide a simulation model for the optimal selection of the operative parameters of HRSG and SOFC for the IGFC system by comparing it with other models. The simulation model should be flexible enough for use in future development and capable of predicting system performance under various operating conditions.  相似文献

A sustainable future power supply requires high fuel-to-electricity conversion efficiencies even in small-scale power plants. A promising technology to reach this goal is a hybrid power plant in which a gas turbine (GT) is coupled with a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). This paper presents a dynamic model of a pressurized SOFC system consisting of the fuel cell stack with combustion zone and balance-of-plant components such as desulphurization, humidification, reformer, ejector and heat exchangers. The model includes thermal coupling between the different components. A number of control loops for fuel and air flows as well as power management are integrated in order to keep the system within the desired operation window. Models and controls are implemented in a MATLAB/SIMULINK environment. Different hybrid cycles proposed earlier are discussed and a preferred cycle is developed. Simulation results show the prospects of the developed modeling and control system.  相似文献

In this paper, the performance evaluation of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC)–micro gas turbine (MGT) hybrid power generation system under the part-load operation was studied numerically. The present analysis code includes distributed parameters model of the cell stack module. The conversions of chemical species for electrochemical process and fuel reformation process are considered. Besides the temperature distributions of the working fluids and each solid part of cell module by accounting heat generation and heat transfers, are taken into calculation. Including all of them, comprehensive energy balance in the cell stack module is calculated. The variable MGT rotational speed operation scheme is adopted for the part-load operation. It will be made evident that the power generation efficiency of the hybrid system decreases together with the power output. The major reason for the performance degradation is the operating temperature reduction in the SOFC module, which is caused by decreasing the fuel supply and the heat generation in the cells. This reduction is also connected to the air flow rate supplement. The variable MGT rotational speed control requires flexible air flow regulations to maintain the SOFC operating temperature. It will lead to high efficient operation of the hybrid system.  相似文献

Solid oxide fuel cell and micro gas turbine (SOFC/MGT) hybrid system is a promising distributed power technology. In order to ensure the system safe operation as well as long lifetime of the fuel cell, an effective control manner is expected to regulate the temperature and fuel utilization at the desired level, and track the desired power output. Thus, a multi-loop control strategy for the hybrid system is investigated in this paper. A mathematical model for the SOFC/MGT hybrid system is built firstly. Based on the mathematical model, control cycles are introduced and their design is discussed. Part load operation condition is employed to investigate the control strategies for the system. The dynamic modeling and control implementation are realized in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment, and the simulation results show that it is feasible to build the multi-loop control methods for the SOFC/MGT hybrid system with regard to load disturbances.  相似文献

In this paper, the model of hybrid solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and gas turbine (GT) cycle is applied to investigate the effects of the inlet fuel type and composition on the performance of the hybrid SOFC–GT cycle. The sensitivity analyses of the impacts of the concentration of the different components, namely, methane, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen, in the inlet fuel on the performance of the hybrid SOFC–GT cycle are performed. The simulation results are presented with respect to a reference case, when the system is fueled by pure methane. Then, the performance of the hybrid SOFC–GT system when methane is partially replaced by each component within a corresponding range of concentration with an increment of 5% at each step is investigated. The results point out that the output powers of the SOFC, GT, and cycle as a whole decrease sharply when methane is replaced with other species in majority of the cases.  相似文献

A theoretical solid oxide fuel cell–gas turbine hybrid system has been designed using a Capstone 60 kW micro-gas turbine. Through simulation it is demonstrated that the hybrid system can be controlled to achieve transient capability greater than the Capstone 60 kW recuperated gas turbine alone. The Capstone 60 kW gas turbine transient capability is limited because in order to maintain combustor, turbine and heat exchangers temperatures within operating requirements, the Capstone combustor fuel-to-air ratio must be maintained. Potentially fast fuel flow rate changes, must be limited to the slower, inertia limited, turbo machinery air response. This limits a 60 kW recuperated gas turbine to transient response rates of approximately 1 kW s−1. However, in the SOFC/GT hybrid system, the combustor temperature can be controlled, by manipulating the fuel cell current, to regulate the amount of fuel sent to the combustor. By using such control pairing, the fuel flow rate does not have to be constrained by the air flow in SOFC/GT hybrid systems. This makes it possible to use the rotational inertia of the gas turbine, to buffer the fuel cell power response, during fuel cell fuel flow transients that otherwise limit fuel cell system transient capability. Such synergistic integration improves the transient response capability of the integrated SOFC gas turbine hybrid system. Through simulation it has been demonstrated that SOFC/GT hybrid system can be developed to have excellent transient capability.  相似文献

Design characteristics and performance of a pressurized solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) hybrid system using a fixed gas turbine (GT) design are analyzed. The gas turbine is assumed to exist prior to the hybrid system design and all the other components such as the SOFC module and auxiliary parts are assumed to be newly designed for the hybrid system. The off-design operation of the GT is modeled by the performance characteristics of the compressor and the turbine. In the SOFC module, internal reforming with anode gas recirculation is adopted. Variations of both the hybrid system performance and operating condition of the gas turbine with the design temperature of the SOFC were investigated. Special focus is directed on the shift of the gas turbine operating points from the original points. It is found that pressure loss at the fuel cell module and other components, located between the compressor and the turbine, shifts the operating point. This results in a decrease of the turbine inlet temperature at each compressor operating condition relative to the original temperature for the GT only system. Thus, it is difficult to obtain the original GT power. Two cell voltage cases and various degrees of temperature difference at the cell are considered and their influences on the system design characteristics and performance are comparatively analyzed.  相似文献

This study presents critical aspects and their influence on the performance of hybrid power systems combining a pressurized solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and a gas turbine (GT). Two types of hybrid system configurations with internal and external reforming have been analyzed. In order to examine the effect of matching between the fuel cell temperature and the turbine inlet temperature on the hybrid system performance, we considered air bypass after the compressor as well as additional fuel supply to the turbine side. This study focuses on the limitation of the temperature difference at the fuel cell stack and its influence on the performances of the two hybrid systems. Performances of the hybrid systems are also compared with those of simple SOFC systems, and the extent of performance enhancement is evaluated. The system with internal reforming gives better efficiency and power capacity for all design conditions than the system with external reforming under the same constraints. Its efficiency gain over the SOFC only system is considerable, while that of the system with external reforming is far less. As the temperature difference at the cell becomes smaller, the system performance generally degrades. The system with internal reforming is less influenced by the constraint of the cell temperature difference.  相似文献

We evaluated the performance of system combining a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stack and a polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) stack by a numerical simulation. We assume that tubular-type SOFCs are used in the SOFC stack. The electrical efficiency of the SOFC–PEFC system increases with increasing oxygen utilization rate in the SOFC stack. This is because the amount of exhaust heat of the SOFC stack used to raise the temperature of air supplied to it decreases as its oxygen utilization rate increases and because that used effectively as the reaction heat of the steam reforming reaction of methane in the stack reformer increases. The electrical efficiency of the SOFC–PEFC system at 190 kW ac is 59% (LHV), which is equal to that of the SOFC-gas turbine combined system at 1014 kW ac.  相似文献

In spite of the high-performance characteristics of a solid oxide fuel cell/gas turbine (SOFC/GT) hybrid system, it is difficult to maintain high-level performance under real application conditions, which generally require part-load operations. The efficiency loss of the SOFC/GT hybrid system under such conditions is closely related to that of the gas turbine. The power generated by the gas turbine in a hybrid system is much less than that generated by the SOFC, but its contribution to the efficiency of the system is important, especially under part-load conditions. Over the entire operating load profile of a hybrid system, the efficiency of the hybrid system can be maximized by increasing the contribution of power coming from the high efficiency component, namely the fuel cell. In this study, part-load control strategies using air-bypass valves are proposed, and their impact on the performance of an SOFC/GT hybrid system is discussed. It is found that air-bypass modes with control of the fuel supply help to overcome the limits of the part-load operation characteristics in air/fuel control modes, such as variable rotational speed control and variable inlet guide vane control.  相似文献

We present a steady‐state thermodynamic model of a hybrid solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC)–gas turbine (GT) cycle developed using a commercial process simulation software, AspenPlus?. The hybrid cycle model incorporates a zero‐dimensional macro‐level SOFC model. A parametric study was carried out using the developed model to study the effects of system pressure, SOFC operating temperature, turbine inlet temperature, steam‐to‐carbon ratio, SOFC fuel utilization factor, and GT isentropic efficiency on the specific work output and efficiency of a generic hybrid cycle with and without anode recirculation. The results show that system pressure and SOFC operating temperature increase the cycle efficiency regardless of the presence of anode recirculation. On the other hand, the specific work decreases with operating temperature. Overall, the model can successfully capture the complex performance trends observed in hybrid cycles. For a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) integrated into a micro gas turbine (MGT) hybrid power system, SOFC operating temperature and turbine inlet temperature are the key parameters, which affect the performance of the hybrid system. Thus, a least squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) identification model based on an improved particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is proposed to describe the nonlinear temperature dynamic properties of the SOFC/MGT hybrid system in this paper. During the process of modeling, an improved PSO algorithm is employed to optimize the parameters of the LS-SVM. In order to obtain the training and prediction data to identify the modified LS-SVM model, a SOFC/MGT physical model is established via Simulink toolbox of MATLAB6.5. Compared to the conventional BP neural network and the standard LS-SVM, the simulation results show that the modified LS-SVM model can efficiently reflect the temperature response of the SOFC/MGT hybrid system.  相似文献

A thermal and electrochemical model is developed for the simulation of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) cogeneration system in this study. The modeling algorithms of electrochemical and thermal models are described. Since the fuel cell stack itself is only a single component within the whole SOFC system, the modeling of the balance-of-plant (BOP) components is also performed to assess the system-level performance. Using the new model, a parametric analysis is carried out to investigate the effects of fuel flow rate, extent of methane gas pre-reforming, fuel utilization factor, recycling rate of cathode gas and cell voltage on the overall system performance. As a result of the parametric study, fuel flow rate, cell voltage, fuel utilization and recycling rate of cathode gas turned out to improve system power output. In addition, the internal reforming turned out to have advantage over external reforming in terms of system power supply.  相似文献

In this article, a dynamic, lumped model of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is described, as a step towards developing control relevant models for a SOFC combined with a gas turbine (GT) in an autonomous power system. The model is evaluated against a distributed dynamic tubular SOFC model. The simulation results confirm that the simple model is able to capture the important dynamics of the SOFC and hence it is concluded that the simple model can be used for control and operability studies of the hybrid system. Several such lumped models can be aggregated to approximate the distributed nature of important variables of the SOFC. Further, models of all other components of a SOFC-GT-based autonomous power system are developed and a control structure for the total system is developed. The controller provides satisfactory performance for load changes at the cost of efficiency.  相似文献

Solid oxide fuel cell gas turbine (SOFC-GT) hybrid systems for producing electricity have received much attention due to high-predicted efficiencies, low pollution and availability of natural gas. Due to the higher value of peak power, a system able to meet fluctuating power demands while retaining high efficiencies is strongly preferable to base load operation. SOFC systems and hybrid variants designed to date have had narrow operating ranges due largely to the necessity of heat management within the fuel cell. Such systems have a single degree of freedom controlled and limited by the fuel cell. This study will introduce a new SOFC-GT hybrid configuration designed to operate over a 5:1 turndown ratio, while maintaining the SOFC stack exit temperature at a constant 1000 °C. The proposed system introduces two new degrees of freedom through the use of a variable-geometry nozzle turbine to directly influence system airflow, and an auxiliary combustor to control the thermal and power needs of the turbomachinery.  相似文献

The evaluation of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) combined heat and power (CHP) system configurations for application in residential dwellings is explored through modeling and simulation of cell-stacks including the balance-of-plant equipment. Five different SOFC system designs are evaluated in terms of their energetic performance and suitability for meeting residential thermal-to-electric ratios. Effective system concepts and key performance parameters are identified. The SOFC stack performance is based on anode-supported planar geometry. A cell model is scaled-up to predict voltage–current performance characteristics when served with either hydrogen or methane fuel gas sources. System comparisons for both fuel types are made in terms of first and second law efficiencies. The results indicate that maximum efficiency is achieved when cathode and anode gas recirculation is used along with internal reforming of methane. System electric efficiencies of 40% HHV (45% LHV) and combined heat and power efficiencies of 79% (88% LHV) are described. The amount of heat loss from small-scale SOFC systems is included in the analyses and can have an adverse impact on CHP efficiency. Performance comparisons of hydrogen-fueled versus methane-fueled SOFC systems are also given. The comparisons indicate that hydrogen-based SOFC systems do not offer efficiency performance advantages over methane-fueled SOFC systems. Sensitivity of this result to fuel cell operating parameter selection demonstrates that the magnitude of the efficiency advantage of methane-fueled SOFC systems over hydrogen-fueled ones can be as high as 6%.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to compare the part-load performance of a solid oxide fuel cell/gas turbine (SOFC/GT) hybrid system in three different control modes: fuel-only control, rotational speed control, and variable inlet guide vane (VIGV) control. While the first mode maintains a constant air supply and reduces the supplied fuel to achieve part-load operation, the other modes are distinguished by the simultaneous controls of the air and fuel supplied to the system. After the performance analysis of a SOFC/GT hybrid system under part-load operating conditions, it was concluded that the rotational speed control mode provided the best performance characteristics for part-load operations. In spite of worse performance than the rotational speed control mode, the VIGV control mode can be a good candidate for part-load operation in a large-scale hybrid system in which the rotational speed control is not applicable. It was also found that, in spite of a relatively small contribution to the total system power generation, the gas turbine plays an important role in part-load operation of a SOFC/GT hybrid system.  相似文献

A man-portable solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system integrated with desulfurized JP8 partial oxidation (POX) reformer was demonstrated to supply a continuous power output of 50 W. This paper discusses some of the design paths chosen and challenges faced during the thermal integration of the stack and reformer in aiding the system startup and shutdown along with balance of plant and power management solutions.
