We analyzed the behavioral responses of the ants Camponotus rufipes and Solenopsis geminata towards all instars of Dione junio and Abananote hylonome. We also analyzed ant behavior towards hexane extracts of larvae and extracts of the spines and neck glands of the fifth instars of both species and identified the chemical compounds present. Larvae of both species were repellent to ants from the first instar onward. Later instars survived ant attacks better than earlier instars. The spines and neck glands of the larvae influenced the behavior of C. rufipes. The chemical compounds contained in the hexane extracts of whole first and fifth instars and in the spines and neck glands of fifth instars were principally carboxylic acids and terpenes. Further bioassays confirmed the repellent effect of some of these acids toward ants.  相似文献

When they are mechanically disturbed, all instars of the tropical bont tickAmblyomma variegatum exude droplets of a liquid on the dorsal, lateral, and ventral cuticle. These spread out and quickly evaporate. In this study, the possible role of these secretions was investigated in relation to predators and pathogens. In laboratory bioassays, it was demonstrated that the secretions from engorged larvae, nymphs, and females have an antibiotic activity against the bacteria speciesBacillus thuringiensis andSerratia marcescens, combined with a repellent effect on a potential predator, the fire-antSolenopsis geminata.  相似文献

The long-chain carboxylic acids identified in the sternal gland secretion ofPolistes dominulus andP. sulcifer females were tested individually on three species of ants,Crematogaster scutellaris, Formica cunicularia, andLasius sp., in order to verify if they have a repellent effect. The unsaturated acids (palmitoleic, linoleic, and oleic) act as repellents of all three ant species, while the saturated acids (lauric, myristic, palmitic, and stearic) have no effect. The mixture reproducing the secretion of the sternal glands ofP. dominulus maintained its repellency for at least four days.  相似文献

Nimbin and salannin, major triterpenoids accompanying azadirachtin in extracts of neem (Azadirachta indica) seeds, were photooxidized by UV light in the presence of oxygen to more polar, unstable intermediates that rearranged on silica gel to two final products in which the furan ring had been oxidized to isomeric hydroxybutenolides. The isomeric hydroxybutenolides were also readily formed when a crude extract of triterpenoids from neem seeds was irradiated, and both isomers of salannin have been isolated from seeds. Photooxidation of nimbin and salannin proceeded much faster than that of azadirachtin. All photoproducts showed some biological activity againstSpodoptera littoralis, Locusta migratoria, andSchistocerca gregaria. Isonimbinolide was as potent as azadirachtin at inhibiting feeding in all three species, and it also inhibited the growth ofS. littoralis. Isosalanninolide showed potent antifeedant and growth inhibitory activity againstS. littoralis.  相似文献

Capping of workerApis mellifera cells is elicited by four fatty acid methyl esters (Methyl palmitate, methyl oleate, methyl linoleate, and methyl linolenate) that are present on the surface of the worker and drone larvae only a few hours before the cell is closed. The amount of the pheromone reaches its maximum value when the cell has just been capped, at 8.5 and at 10.25 days of age, respectively, for worker and drone larvae. Thereafter, the amount of the pheromone decreases to its initial level. These data suggest that the esters also have a role in the capping of the drone cells, the temporal signal allowing the worker bees to recognize the age of the larvae and then to do the appropriate behavior. Two pheromonal components, methyl palmitate and methyl linolenate, and the inactive ethyl palmitate are kairomones attractive toVarroa females. Their secretion by the larvae follows the same pattern of development as the pheromonal signal. The longer and greater kairomonal signal in drone larvae, compared to worker secretion, could explain the preference ofVarroa towards drone brood.  相似文献

Reticulitermes flavipes andR. virginicus have been examined for the presence and possible defense functions of soldiers specific secretions. The cephalic extracts for soldiers of both species contained the identical two major sesquiterpenes which were absent from other castes. The sesquiterpenes have been identified as 1-cadinene (I) and the corresponding aldehyde (II) by high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry using homonuclear proton decoupling and by high-resolution mass spectrometry. When groups of termite soldiers were exposed to foraging parties of the sympatric native fire ant,Solenopsis geminata, the termites utilized only mechanical defenses. No evidence was obtained to indicate that the ants had been sprayed or coated with either an irritant or toxicant, and there was no evidence that an alarm had been promulgated.  相似文献

The major component of the trail pheromone of the South American leaf-cutting ant,Atta sexdens rubropilosa Forel, is 3-ethyl-2,5-dimethylpyrazine (II). Methyl and ethyl phenylacetate and methyl 4-methylpyrrole-2-carboxylate (I), which is the major component of the trail pheromone ofA. texana (Buckley) andA. cephalotes (L.), were also identified and may be minor components. The pheromone is stored in the poison gland.Atta sexdens sexdens (L.) also responds strongly to the pyrazine, which in large amounts evokes a weak response fromA. texana, A. cephalotes, andAcromyrmex octospinosus (Reich). Foraging workers ofAtta sexdens rubropilosa did not preferentially pick up baits impregnated with the pyrazine. The pyrazine was puffed into the nests ofA. cephalotes, and a particular response called milling was noted.  相似文献

Lignans fromVirola sebifera Aubl.,Virola sp., andOtoba parvifolia (Mkfg.) A. Gentry (Myristicaceae) inhibited the in vitro growth of the fungus cultivated by leaf-cutting ants of the speciesAtta sexdens rubropilosa Forel (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). A comparison of activity among the lignans was obtained.  相似文献

Since several species of predatory ants show some kind of repulsion towards the first-instar larvae (FIL) ofDiaprepes abbreviatus L., the predatory behavior ofSolenopsis geminata (F.), a common ant in the citrus groves in Guadeloupe, was studied. Different extracts of larvae were disposed on egg masses ofD. abbreviatus and presented as prey to the ants, both in the field and in the laboratory. The ants are repelled by the FIL extracts. The allelochemicals involved are produced in large amounts, from 5 to 20 ng per larva. Physiochemical analyses have led to the identification of two sesquiterpenes of molecular weight 218 and 234, secreted in the respective proportions of 65 and 35%.  相似文献

The antignawing activity of the steam distillate ofThujopsis dolabrata S. et. Z. var.hondai sawdust against mice was evaluated using a wire-dipping method. This method is suitable for measuring repellent activities of chemicals and plant-derived materials. The steam distillate of theThujopsis sawdust was shown to have potent antignawing activity. Three terpenoid compounds with antignawing activity were isolated from the steam distillate of theThujopsis sawdust: thujopsene, carvacrol, and-thujaplicine. Carvacrol exhibited the most potent repellent activity. As a naturally occurring repellent, carvacrol could be useful as new preventive agent against various kinds of damage caused by rodents.  相似文献

The field response ofTomicus piniperda (L.) andHylurgops palliatus (Gyll.) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) to the attractant ethanol in combination with volatile wood constituents released from the nonhost tree speciesPopulus tremula L. (Salicaceae) andBetula pendula Roth (Betulaceae) was studied using flight barrier traps. The attraction of both species decreased when aspen or birch wood was added to the ethanol bait. The same was true forRhizophagus depressus (F.) (Coleoptera: Rhizophagidae), a predatory species associated with conifer bark beetles.Glischrochilus quadripunctatus (L-),Epuraea bickhardti St.-Claire Deville,E. unicolor (Oliv.) (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), andRhizophagus parvutus (Payk.) (Coleoptera: Rhizophagidae) were caught in higher numbers in traps baited with both ethanol and wood of aspen or birch than in traps baited with ethanol alone. In a separate experiment, landings ofT. piniperda andH. palliatus on nonhosts (black plastic tubes) were demonstrated with sticky traps.  相似文献

We investigated the exocrine secretions from the five nymphal instars in the southern green stink bug,Nezara viridula, by analyzing separately the contents of the three dorsal abdominal reservoirs. All DAGs 1 produced a mixture of five alkanes with 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 carbons. No differences were found between DAGs 2 and DAGs 3, for the five instars: the glands of first instars produce the same alkanes as DAGs 1,n-tridecane, traces of (E)-2-decenal, and a specific compound: (E)-4-oxo-2-decenal. In the other instars (second to fifth), (E)-4-oxo-2-decenal is absent from the secretion but another compound is present: (E)-4-oxo-2-hexenal. The kinetics of production of the different compounds were studied, the maximum amounts produced occurring 36 hr after hatching. The biological function of (E)-4-oxo-2-decenal was investigated. Using olfactometry, we showed that this compound acts as an attractant and an arrestant on second instars, at physiological doses. Moreover, this semiochemical was shown to be repellent to the fire-antSolenopsis geminata, a potential predator ofN. viridula and we established the dose-response curve for the repellent activity.  相似文献

Polygonum aviculare was observed to spread rapidly into heavy stands ofCynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. resulting in death of the latter. This indicated a strong interference againstCynodon dactylon. Measurements of selected soil minerals and physical factors indicated that competition was probably not the chief cause of that interference. Soil collected under deadPolygonum was very inhibitory to all test species exceptSporobolus pyramidatus (Lam.) Hitchc., suggesting the presence of inhibitory compounds. Tops and roots ofPolygonum, root exudates, and leachate of the tops inhibited seed germination and seedling growth of most test species. Therefore, allelopathy apeared to be the dominant component of the interference, with competition probably accentuating its effects.Polygonum aviculare was inhibitory toGossypium barbadense L. andSorghum bicolor (L.) Moench, indicating that allelopathy is an important component of the interference byPolygonum against crop yields.  相似文献

We previously reported thatPolygonum aviculare has a strong allelopathic action againstCynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. and other test species. Moreover, we found that several phenolic compounds appeared to be important allelochemics in this activity. We have now isolated other potential inhibitors fromP. aviculare residues and soil underPolygonum stands, and none of these occurred in soil underC. dactylon stands. GC-MS analysis revealed that these additional inhibitors are long-chain fatty acids with 14–22 carbons. Nine were identified inP. aviculare residues and seven in soil underP. aviculare. Sodium salts of all the identified fatty acids inhibited seedling growth ofC. dactylon and at least some test strains of the nitrogen-fixing bacteria,Azotobacter andRhizobium.  相似文献

Ceratocystis fagacearum (Bretz) Hunt is the causative agent of oak wilt disease, which is transmitted primarily by nitidulid beetles. This fungus was compared with four non-insect-dependent fungi for their volatile profiles using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and for their attractiveness to nitidulids using a wind-tunnel bioassay. The four additional fungi includedXerula radicata Sing,Pluteus atricapillus Kumm,Tyromyces chioneus Karst, andBotrytis cinerea. Nitidulids have been reported in association with each of these fungi, but unlikeC. fagacearum, they are dispersed primarily by wind or rain. Significant attraction of three nitidulid species,Carpophilus hemipterus (Linne),C. lugubris Murray, andStelidota geminata (Say) was elicited byC. fagacearum and to a lesser extent byX. radicata, but not by the others. A comparison of headspace volatile profiles showed that the odor ofC. fagacearum was the strongest, both with regard to the number of components and in their rates of production. Chemical characterization of the headspace profile ofC. fagacearum revealed 16 components: one aldehyde, one ketone, five alcohols, and nine esters. These components were all common fruit-odor constituents and many of them were previously shown to be attractive to nitidulid beetles. The results of this study suggest that, by mimicking food odors,C. fagacearum odor is an adaptation for attracting nitidulid and possibly other insect vectors.  相似文献

Biological activity of leaves, fruits and extract of the African shrubBoscia senegalensis (PERS.) LAM. ex Poir. was evaluated against five stored-grain insects. When added to cowpeas at 2–4% (w/w), fresh ground fruits and leaves caused 80–100% mortality inCallosobruchus maculants (F.) adults and significantly reduced both emergence and damage of the F1 progeny. Acetone fruit extract exhibited a potent fumigant effect onProstephanus truncatus Horn, C.maculatus, andSitotroga cerealella OLIV.; with LT50 values of 3.8, 2.3, and below 1.5 hr, respectively. LC50 determination forB. senegalensis fruits and leaves as well as pure methylisothiocyanate (MITC) onTribolium castaneum HERBST,Sitophilus zeamais MOTSCH. andC. maculatus showed a differential response of the insects to plant parts or MITC. Quantitative dosage ofBoscia active components and LC50 values obtained for the plant tissues, compared to those of pure molecules, indicate that the biological activity ofB. senegalensis is due to the liberation of MITC from a glucosinolate precursor glucocapparin contained inBoscia fruits and leaves.  相似文献

We tested the bird aversive properties of methyl anthranilate, yucca extracts, and Xanthoxylum spp. extracts in oneand two-bottle drinking assays that used European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris). In oneand two-bottle tests, methyl anthranilate proved to be the more potent stimulus in producing an avoidance response. Starlings avoided consuming Xanthoxylum and yucca only in the two-bottle tests. Previous studies showed that yucca was a good adjuvant in stabilizing lipophilic compounds in water. Starlings did not avoid binary mixtures of methyl anthranilate and yucca differently from what would be expected if they were only responding to the solution's methyl anthranilate content. However, yucca enhanced the aversive qualities of Xanthoxylum. The ability to identify mode of action for repellency and synergistic combinations of chemicals derived from natural products for use in repellent mixtures is an important aspect of the development of cost-effective, environmentally safe repellents for use in conflict resolution between humans and wildlife.  相似文献

Four chemical compounds previously shown to be attractants toHippelates eye gnats and houseflies were evaluated againstFannia femoralis (Stein). Two of the compounds, trimethylamine hydrochloride andn-butyric acid, were determined to be the principal attractants against this fly. A composition containing trimethylamine hydrochloride (yielding trimethylamine in presence of water),n-butyric acid, and an anchovy meal inert carrier proved highly attractive. To evaluate the practical use of the synthetic fly attractant (SFA) formulation, a large-scale trial over an entire poultry ranch was implemented using SFA formulation and a sugar toxicant (as a killing agent) in specially designed traps. Within 2 weeks after initiation of SFA-toxicant treatments, significant reduction inF. femoralis population from the pretreatment level occurred. This high level of reduction prevailed during the remainder of the treatment period.  相似文献

The fumigant toxicity of 28 essential oils extracted from various spice and herb plants and some of their major constituents were assessed for adult coleopteransRhyzopertha dominica, Oryzaephilus surinamensis, Tribolium castaneum, andSitophilus oryzae. Three groups of active materials were distinguished: (1) The compounds terpinen 4-ol, 1,8-cineole, and the essential oils of three-lobed sage, sage, bay laurel, rosemary, and lavender were most active againstR. dominica; (2) The compounds linalool,-terpineol, and carvacrol and the essential oils of oregano, basil, Syrian marjoram, and thyme were most active againstO. surinamensis; and (3) the compound 1,8-cineole and the essential oils anise and peppermint were active againstT. castaneum.  相似文献

Methylisoricinoleate (methyl-9-hydroxy-cis-12-octadecenoate) (I) has been derivatized to yield new fatty acid derivatives analogous to those obtained from the ricinoleic acid of castor oil. These derivatives include 1,9-dihydroxy-12-octadecene (II); 1,9-diacetoxy-12-octadecene (III); 12,13-epoxy-1,9-diacetoxyoctadecane (IV); 9-cyanoethoxy-1-hydroxy-12-octadecene (V); 1-morpholine-9-hydroxy-12-octadecene (VI), and 1-morpholine-9-cyanoethoxy-12-octadecene (VII). Structures of these compounds were established by chemical and spectral data. The compounds V, VI and VII showed antifungal activity againstAlternaria sp.,Helminthosporium sp.,Penicillium citrinum, Fusarium oxysporum, Aspergillus ochraceous, A. flavus, A. niger, Actinomyces sp. andCladosporium harbarum.  相似文献
