The principle of gradualness "is important for any scientist, but it is particularly relevant for those who deal primarily with human beings." Psychological theories often tend to be premature and lack beauty or elegance. Antidotes to the problems of a close relationship between theory and practice are suggested. Comment on "alcoholism, alpha production, and biofeedback"

Challenges the conclusions of F. W. Jones and D. S. Holmes (1976) that alcoholics have a higher level of arousal and that generalization of results from biofeedback studies is a function of S variables. Several confounding errors in methodology and interpretation by Jones and Holmes are discussed, noting that their conclusions are not supported by the reported data. Reduced growth hormone responses to amphetamine in "endogenous" depressive patients: studies in normal, "reactive" and "endogenous" depressive, schizophrenic, and chronic alcoholic subjects

Several pharmacological stimulation tests of the pituitary-hypothalamic system have been used to investigate psychiatric disorders. This study introduces amphetamine sulfate as a stimulus for human growth hormone (HGH) release in various psychiatric patients. Peak HGH release after a single intravenous administration of amphetamine sulfate, 0.1 mg/kg, was significantly lower in nine "endogenous" depressives (P = .01) and significantly higher in seven "reactive" depressives (P less than .05) as compared to normal subjects, whereas peak HGH release in eight schizophrenics and six chronic alcoholics did not differ significantly from that in normal subjects.

Pressure has been used since the early 1970s by burn care provides to help minimize the formation of hypertrophic scars. Although the exact mechanism of action is unknown, pressure appears clinically to enhance the scar maturation process. Bandages that can be wrapped and unwrapped or are made of a soft material are used in early scar management. Custom-made pressure garments generally are used for definitive scar management. Inserts are placed in concavities to aid in compression. Whatever intervention is used for scar management, patient and family should be educated about the realistic, potential outcome.     

"Credulous" and "skeptical" views of hypnotic phenomena: Experiments on esthesia, hallucination, and delusion.

The author distinguishes between 2 interpretations of hypnotic phenomena: the credulous (S does or does not experience what the hypnotist suggests) and the skeptical (S reports what is suggested regardless of the "reality" of his experience). 2 groups of Ss (distinguished with respect to the presence or not of genuine hypnotic behavior and posthypnotic amnesia) were placed in a 3 [control (not under hypnotic trance), hypnotic trance, nontrance acting (S asked to act as if conditions were as suggested)] by 2 (stimulus present or not) design involving paraesthesias, hallucinations, and delusional thinking. Evidence (such as GSR, interference in thinking due to feedback, test measures of delusion) suggests that S does not misperceive the real situation, but misreports it.
