The information era has dramatically changed the business environment, and keen competition puts tremendous demands on companies to reduce total cost and maximize return on investment. This is why more businesses are seeing systems for enterprise resource planning (ERP) as key to remaining competitive. Data warehousing is one of the key developments in the information systems (IS) field. While its benefits are plentiful, some organizations are receiving more significant returns than others. The types of returns can vary in the impact they have on the organization and the ease in which they can be quantified and measured. This article presents a framework that shows how data warehouses can transform an organization; it also offers a compelling explanation for why differences in impact exist. Case studies of data warehousing initiatives at a large manufacturing company (LMC), the Internal Revenue Service, and a financial services company (FSC) are presented and discussed within the context of the framework. The analysis shows that the benefits that each company received can be tied to the way in which it conforms to the framework.  相似文献

Data warehousing technology offers organizations the potential for much greater exploitation of informational assets. However, the evaluation of potential investments in this technology poses problems for organizations as traditional evaluation methods are constrained when dealing with strategic IT applications. Nevertheless, many organizations are procedurally obliged to use such methods for evaluating data warehousing investments. This paper identifies five problems with using such methods in these circumstances: evaluating intangible benefits; making the relationship between IT and profitability explicit; dealing with the vanishing status quo; dealing with the extended investment time frame; and evaluating infrastructural investments. The authors studied how four organizations in the UK and Ireland attempted to overcome these problems when introducing data warehousing, and propose a framework for evaluating data warehousing investments. This framework consists of a high‐level analysis of the economic environment and of the information intensity of the relationship between the organization and its customers. Based on the outcome of this analysis, the authors propose four factors that have to be managed during the evaluation process in order to ensure that the limitations of the traditional evaluation techniques do not adversely affect the evaluation process. These factors are: commitment and sponsorship; the approach to evaluation; the time scale of benefits; and the appraisal techniques used.  相似文献

Decision support systems help the decision making process with the use of OLAP (On-Line Analytical Processing) and data warehouses. These systems allow the analysis of corporate data. As OLAP and data warehousing evolve, more and more complex data is being used. XML (Extensible Markup Language) is a flexible text format allowing the interchange and the representation of complex data. Finding an appropriate model for an XML data warehouse tends to become complicated as more and more solutions appear. Hence, in this survey paper we present an overview of the different proposals that use XML within data warehousing technology. These proposals range from using XML data sources for regular warehouses to those using full XML warehousing solutions. Some researches merely focus on document storage facilities while others present adaptations of XML technology for OLAP. Even though there are a growing number of researches on the subject, many issues still remain unsolved.  相似文献

Teams engaging in assistive technology research should include expertise in the domain of disability itself, in addition to other areas of expertise that are more typical in human–computer interaction (HCI) research, such as computer science and psychology. However, unexpected problems can arise when HCI researchers do not adequately plan the involvement of domain experts in a research project. Although many research teams have included domain experts when designing assistive technologies, there has been little work published on how to best involve these experts in the research process. This paper is a first step towards filling that void. Based on the authors’ own experiences involving domain experts in research, as well as those documented in the literature, five types of domain experts and three broad roles that domain experts can play are identified, and five guidelines for their involvement are presented. This analysis will be useful to anyone in the assistive technology and universal accessibility communities, especially those who are in the early stages of conducting research in this area. It is intended to lay the foundation of best practices for involving domain experts in assistive technology research.  相似文献

In this paper, we address the issues related to the evolution and maintenance of data warehousing systems, when underlying data sources change their schema capabilities. These changes can invalidate views at the data warehousing system. We present an approach for dynamically adapting views according to schema changes arising on source relations. This type of maintenance concerns both the schema and the data of the data warehouse. The main issue is to avoid the view recomputation from scratch especially when views are defined from multiple sources. The data of the data warehouse is used primarily in organizational decision-making and may be strategic. Therefore, the schema of the data warehouse can evolve for modeling new requirements resulting from analysis or data-mining processing. Our approach provides means to support schema evolution of the data warehouse independently of the data sources. Energy-efficient building renovation is an inter-disciplinary task and requires investigation about the building condition in the urban, environmental, and societal context. Existing literature implicitly mentions the effect of surrounding data in different stages of building renovation. Nevertheless, no conceptual framework is available for practitioners to realize the potential of such data in specific phases of the renovation.The main goal of this study is to understand: (1) based on what knowledge framework surrounding geospatial and environmental data can support building renovation projects, (2) if developing an ontology can help representing this knowledge framework, and (3) how experts and engineers involved in the renovation process can contribute to development of this knowledge framework. The results present an ontology that maps surrounding geospatial and environmental concepts for different renovation tasks and use cases within building renovation. The ontology is built upon knowledge captured from previous studies that implicitly mention the effect of these datasets in building renovation, as well as expert knowledge, brainstorming, and monitoring construction sites. Additionally, a semi-structured verification and validation workshop has been performed to incorporate insights from experts directly involved in different stages of building renovation process.This paper contributes to the body of knowledge by generating a common framework for the surrounding data required in building renovation. It has an implication in practice for engineers by providing a shared knowledge framework and for software developers by providing a basis for BIM (Building Information Modeling) and GIS (Geographic Information System) data integration for renovation purposes.  相似文献
