This paper determines upper bounds on the expected time complexity for a variety of parallel algorithms for undirected and directed random graph problems. For connectivity, biconnectivity, transitive closure, minimum spanning trees, and all pairs minimum cost paths, we prove the expected time to beO(log logn) for the CRCW PRAM (this parallel RAM machine allows resolution of write conflicts) andO(logn · log logn) for the CREW PRAM (which allows simultaneous reads but not simultaneous writes). We also show that the problem of graph isomorphism has expected parallel timeO(log logn) for the CRCW PRAM andO(logn) for the CREW PRAM. Most of these results follow because of upper bounds on the mean depth of a graph, derived in this paper, for more general graphs than was known before.For undirected connectivity especially, we present a new probabilistic algorithm which runs on a randomized input and has an expected running time ofO(log logn) on the CRCW PRAM, withO(n) expected number of processors only.Our results also improve known upper bounds on the expected space required for sequential graph algorithms. For example, we show that the problems of finding connected components, transitive closure, minimum spanning trees, and minimum cost paths have expected sequential spaceO(logn · log logn) on a deterministic Turing Machine. We give a parallel method for triangulating a simple polygon by two (parallel) calls to the trapezoidal map computation. The method is simpler and more elegant than previous methods. Along the way we obtain an interesting partition of one-sided monotone polygons. Using the best-known trapezoidal map algorithm, ours run in timeO(logn) usingO(n) CREW PRAM processors.  相似文献

A new general parallel algorithmic technique for computations on trees is presented. In particular, it provides the firstn/logn processor,O(logn)-time deterministic EREW PRAM algorithm for expression tree evaluation. We give an improved parallel algorithm for the problem of computing the tube minima of a totally monotonen ×n ×n matrix, an important matrix searching problem that was formalized by Aggarwal and Park and has many applications. Our algorithm runs inO(log logn) time withO(n2/log logn) processors in theCRCW-PRAM model, whereas the previous best ran inO((log logn)2) time withO(n2/(log logn)2 processors, also in theCRCW-PRAM model. Thus we improve the speed without any deterioration in thetime ×processors product. There is a large and growing body of literature concerning the solutions of geometric problems on mesh-connected arrays of processors. Most of these algorithms are optimal (i.e., run in timeO(n 1/d ) on ad-dimensionaln-processor array), and they all assume that the parallel machine is trying to solve a problem of sizen on ann-processor array. Here we investigate the situation where we have a mesh of sizep and we are interested in using it to solve a problem of sizen >p. The goal we seek is to achieve, when solving a problem of sizen >p, the same speed up as when solving a problem of sizep. We show that for many geometric problems, the same speedup can be achieved when solving a problem of sizen >p as when solving a problem of sizep.The research of M. J. In this paper we describe a simple parallel algorithm for list ranking. The algorithm is deterministic and runs inO(logn) time on an EREW PRAM withn/logn processors. The algorithm matches the performance of the Cole-Vishkin [CV3] algorithm but is simple and has reasonable constant factors.R. J. The problem of outputting all parse trees of a string accepted by a context-free grammar is considered. A systolic algorithms is presented that operates inO(m·n) time, wherem is the number of distinct parse trees andn is the length of the input. The systolic array usesn 2 processors, each of which requires at mostO(logn) bits of storage. This is much more space-efficient that a previously reported systolic algorithm for the same problem, which requiredO(n logn) space per processor. This paper is concerned with the relative power of the two most popular concurrent-write models of parallel computation, the PRIORITY PRAM [G], and the COMMON PRAM [K]. Improving the trivial and seemingly optimalO(logn) simulation, we show that one step of a PRIORITY machine can be simulated byO(logn/(log logn)) steps of a COMMON machine with the same number of processors (and more memory). We analyze a simple method for finding shortest paths inEuclidean graphs (where vertices are points in a Euclidean space and edge weights are Euclidean distances between points). For many graph models, the average running time of the algorithm to find the shortest path between a specified pair of vertices in a graph withV vertices andE edges is shown to beO(V) as compared withO(E +V logV) required by the classical algorithm due to Dijkstra.Support for the first author was provided in part by NSF Grant MCS-83-08806. A parallel algorithm for computing the generalized singular value decomposition of two matrices A and B having the same number of columns is described in this paper. The algorithm is designed for efficient implementation on distributed-memory parallel computer architectures. The time cost is O(n2) units for parallel preprocessing, and O(n2/p) units for the GSVD of two upper trapezoidal matrices, where p is the dimension of the triangular array of processors.  相似文献

The problem of partitioning a rectilinear figure into rectangles with minimum length is NP-hard and has bounded heuristics. In this paper we study a related problem,Elimination Problem (EP), in which a rectilinear figure is partitioned into a set of rectilinear figures containing no concave vertices of a fixed direction with minimum length. We show that a heuristic for EP within a factor of 4 from optimal can be computed in timeO(n 2), wheren is the number of vertices of the input figure, and a variant of this heuristic, within a factor of 6 from optimal, can be computed in timeO(n logn). As an application, we give a bounded heuristic for the problem of partitioning a rectilinear figure into histograms of a fixed direction with minimum length.An auxiliary result is that an optimal rectangular partition of a monotonic histogram can be computed in timeO(n 2), using a known speed-up technique in dynamic programming.Part of this work was done when the first author was a postdoctor fellow in MSRI, Berkeley, and supported in part by NSF Grant No. 8120790. An algorithm for sorting on a mesh by alternately transforming the rows and columns is presented. The algorithm runs in a constant number of row- and column-transformation phases (sixteen phases), an improvement over the previous best upper bound ofO(log logm) phases,m being the number of rows in the mesh. We consider the twin problems of maintaining the bridge-connected components and the biconnected components of a dynamic undirected graph. The allowed changes to the graph are vertex and edge insertions. We give an algorithm for each problem. With simple data structures, each algorithm runs inO(n logn +m) time, wheren is the number of vertices andm is the number of operations. We develop a modified version of the dynamic trees of Sleator and Tarjan that is suitable for efficient recursive algorithms, and use it to reduce the running time of the algorithms for both problems toO(m(m,n)), where is a functional inverse of Ackermann's function. This time bound is optimal. Mesh of trees (MOT) is well known for its small diameter, high bisection width, simple decomposability and area universality. On the other hand, OTIS (Optical Transpose Interconnection System) provides an efficient optoelectronic model for massively parallel processing system. In this paper, we present OTIS-MOT as a competent candidate for a two-tier architecture that can take the advantages of both the OTIS and the MOT. We show that an n4-n^{4}_{-} processor OTIS-MOT has diameter 8log n +1 (The base of the logarithm is assumed to be 2 throughout this paper.) and fault diameter 8log n+2 under single node failure. We establish other topological properties such as bisection width, multiple paths and the modularity. We show that many communication as well as application algorithms can run on this network in comparable time or even faster than other similar tree-based two-tier architectures. The communication algorithms including row/column-group broadcast and one-to-all broadcast are shown to require O(log n) time, multicast in O(n 2log n) time and the bit-reverse permutation in O(n) time. Many parallel algorithms for various problems such as finding polynomial zeros, sales forecasting, matrix-vector multiplication and the DFT computation are proposed to map in O(log n) time. Sorting and prefix computation are also shown to run in O(log n) time.  相似文献

A parallel algorithm is presented for recognizing the class of languages generated by tree adjoining grammars, a tree rewriting system which has applications in natural language processing. This class of languages is known to properly include all context-free languages; for example, the noncontext-free sets {a n b n c n } and {ww} are in this class. It is shown that the recognition problem for tree adjoining languages can be solved by a concurrent read, concurrent write parallel random-access machine (CRCW PRAM) inO(logn) time using polynomially many processors. Thus, the class of tree adjoining languages is inAC 1 and hence inNC. Assume we are given ann ×n binary image containing horizontally convex features; i.e., for each feature, each of its row's pixels form an interval on that row. In this paper we consider the problem of assigning topological numbers to such features, i.e., assign a number to every featuref so that all features to the left off in the image have a smaller number assigned to them. This problem arises in solutions to the stereo matching problem. We present a parallel algorithm to solve the topological numbering problem inO(n) time on ann ×n mesh of processors. The key idea of our solution is to create a tree from which the topological numbers can be obtained even though the tree does not uniquely represent the to the left of relationship of the features.The work of M. 基于最小自由能模型的方法是计算生物学中RNA二级结构预测的主要方法,而计算最小自由能的动态规划算法需要O(n4)的时间,其中n是RNA序列的长度.目前有两种降低时间复杂度的策略:限制二级结构中内部环的大小不超过k,得到O(n2×k2)算法;Lyngso方法根据环的能量规则,不限制环的大小,在O(n3)的时间内获得近似最优解.通过使用额外的O(n)的空间,计算内部环中的冗余计算大为减少,从而在同样不限制环大小的情况下,在O(n3)的时间内能够获得最优解.然而,优化后的算法仍然非常耗时,通过有效的负载平衡方法,在机群系统上实现并行程序.实验结果表明,并行程序获得了很好的加速比.  相似文献
