Atmospheric optical communication with a Gaussian Schell beam   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
We consider a wireless optical communication link in which the laser source is a Gaussian Schell beam. The effects of atmospheric turbulence strength and degree of source spatial coherence on aperture averaging and average bit error rate are examined. To accomplish this, we have derived analytic expressions for the spatial covariance of irradiance fluctuations and log-intensity variance for a Gaussian beam of any degree of coherence in the weak fluctuation regime. When spatial coherence of the transmitted source beam is reduced, intensity fluctuations (scintillations) decrease, leading to a significant reduction in the bit error rate of the optical communication link. We have also identified an enhanced aperture-averaging effect that occurs in tightly focused coherent Gaussian beams and in collimated and slightly divergent partially coherent beams. The expressions derived provide a useful design tool for selecting the optimal transmitter beam size, receiver aperture size, beam spatial coherence, transmitter focusing, etc., for the anticipated atmospheric channel conditions.  相似文献

Theoretical study of propagation behaviour of partially coherent divergent Gaussian beams through oceanic turbulence has been performed. Based on the previously developed knowledge of propagation of a partially coherent beam in atmosphere, the spatial power spectrum of the refractive index of ocean water, extended Huygens–Fresnel principle and the unified theory of coherence and polarization, analytical formulas for cross-spectral density matrix elements are derived. The analytical formulas for intensity distribution, beam width and spectral degree of coherence are determined by using cross-spectral density matrix elements. Then, the effects of some source factors and turbulent ocean parameters on statistical properties of divergent Gaussian beam propagating through turbulent water are analysed. It is found that beam’s statistical propagation behaviour is affected by both environmental and source parameters variations.  相似文献

Coupling properties and kurtosis parameter (K parameter) of arbitrary beams propagating through atmospheric turbulence are investigated. A correlation factor (C4-factor) is introduced to describe the influence of turbulence on coupling characteristics. The general analytical expression for C4-factor of arbitrary beams in atmospheric turbulence is derived. It is shown that C4-factor of arbitrary beams in the turbulent atmosphere depends on the initial second-order moments and fourth-order moments and turbulence quantities. Taking the partially coherent anomalous elliptical hollow Gaussian (PCAEHG) beam as an example, we can obtain that C4-factor decreases as structure constant of the refractive index fluctuations and inner scale increase, and waist width and transverse coherence length decrease when z?>?5?km. Moreover, K parameter of PCAEHG beam in turbulent atmosphere converges to 2 when propagation distance is large enough. It indicates that the profile of PCAEHG beams in turbulent atmosphere finally evolves into fundamental Gaussian distribution.  相似文献

Based on the modified beam model for flat-topped beams and the Schell model for partially coherent light, an expression for partially coherent flat-topped (PCFT) beams has been proposed. The propagation characteristics of PCFT beams with circular symmetry through a turbulent atmosphere have been studied. By using the generalized Huygens-Fresnel integral and Fourier transform method, the expressions for the cross-spectral density function and the average intensity have been given and the analytical expression for the root-mean-square width has been derived. The effects of the beam order, the spatial coherence, and the turbulent parameter on the intensity distributions and beam spreading have been discussed in detail. Our results show that the on-axis intensity of the beams decreases with increasing turbulence and decreasing coherence of the source, whereas the on-axis intensity of the beams in the far field decreases slightly with increasing beam order. The relative spreading of PCFT beams is smaller for beams with a higher order, a lower degree of global coherence of the source, a larger inner scale, and a smaller outer scale of the turbulence.  相似文献

Free-space optical communication systems are affected by turbulent atmosphere. The atmospheric transmission is affected by absorption, scattering and turbulence. In this paper, the effects of absorption and scattering are taken into account using Beer’s law and the effects of turbulence are considered in calculating the average intensity distribution. An analytical expression for the average intensity distribution of a partially coherent flat-topped array (PCFTA) beam in turbulent atmosphere is derived based on the extended Huygens–Fresnel principle. The average intensity, power in bucket, signal to noise ratio, and bit error rate of this kind of beam are investigated in details. It is shown by numerical results and analytical methods that the average intensity and link parameters of PCFTA beams change during propagation and these changes are dependent upon both source parameters and weather conditions.  相似文献

Effects of the tissue turbulence on the propagation of an optical spherical wave are analysed. For this purpose, scintillation index of an optical spherical wave which is propagating in a soft tissue is formulated and evaluated in weakly turbulent soft tissue. Scintillation index of the optical spherical wave is examined against the changes in the tissue parameters which are the tissue length between the optical spherical wave source and the detector, random variations in the refractive index of the tissue and the outer scale of the tissue turbulence. According to our graphical outputs, it is observed that increase in the random variations of the refractive index of the tissue results in an increase in the scintillation index at a certain realization of the turbulence spectrum. On the other hand, larger outer scales and longer tissue lengths yield larger scintillations. The variation of the scintillation index of the optical spherical wave versus the wavelength is also investigated. It is found that at small tissue lengths, wavelength has almost no effect on the scintillations; however, when the tissue length reaches a certain value, shorter wavelengths give rise to larger intensity fluctuations.  相似文献

In a strongly turbulent medium, the scintillation index of flat-topped Gaussian beams is derived and evaluated. In the formulation, unified solution of Rytov method is utilized. Our results correctly reduce to the existing strong turbulence scintillation index of the Gaussian beam, and naturally to spherical and plane wave scintillations. Another checkpoint of our result is the scintillation index of flat-topped Gaussian beams in weak turbulence. Regardless of the order of flatness, scintillations of flat-topped Gaussian beams in strong turbulence are found to be determined mainly by the small-scale effects. For large-sized beams in moderate and strongly turbulent medium, flatter beams exhibit smaller scintillations.  相似文献

The scintillation statistics of a multiwavelength Gaussian optical beam are characterized when the beam is subjected to a turbulent optical channel. It is assumed that the level of turbulence in the atmosphere ensures a weak-turbulence scenario and that fluctuations in the signal intensity are due to variations in the refractive index of the medium, which in turn are caused by regional temperature variations due to atmospheric turbulence. Furthermore, it is assumed that the propagation path is nearly horizontal and that the heights of the transmitter and receiver justify a near-ground propagation assumption. The Rytov approximation is used to arrive at the desired results. Furthermore, it is assumed that the first- as well as second-order perturbation terms are present in modeling the impact of atmosphere-induced scintillation. Numerical results are presented to shed light on the performance of multiwavelength optical radiation in weak turbulence and to underscore the benefits of the proposed approach as compared with its single-wavelength counterpart in combating the effect of turbulence. Furthermore, it is shown that if the separation of wavelengths used is sufficiently large, wavelength separation affects the scintillation index in a measurable way.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We study the spiral spectrum of anomalous vortex beams propagating through a turbulent atmosphere. Based on the Huygens–Fresnel integral and the Rytov approximation, the integral expression and then the analytical expression for the spiral spectrum of anomalous vortex beams in the weakly turbulent atmosphere are derived. The capacity of wireless optical links using the anomalous vortex beam is obtained. It is found that the spiral spectrum of the anomalous vortex beam is less affected by turbulence than that of the Laguerre-Gaussian beam. And thus, the information capacity of wireless optical links using the anomalous vortex beam is larger than that using the Laguerre-Gaussian beam. The influence of beam order, wavelength, topological charge, propagation distance, refractive index structure constant and the radius of receiver aperture on spiral spectrum is investigated. These results contribute to reduce the disturbing effects of atmospheric turbulence on the orbital angular momentum of the vortex beam.  相似文献

With the use of the general beam formulation, the modulus of the complex degree of coherence for partially coherent cosh-Gaussian, cos-Gaussian, Gaussian, annular and higher-order Gaussian optical beams is evaluated in atmospheric turbulence. For different propagation lengths in horizontal atmospheric links, the moduli of the complex degree of coherence at the source and receiver planes are examined when reference points are taken on the receiver axis and off-axis. In the on-axis case, it is observed that in propagation, the moduli of the complex degree of coherence are symmetrical and look like the intensity profile of the related coherent beam propagating in a turbulent atmosphere. For all the beams considered, the moduli of the complex degree of coherence profiles turn into Gaussian shapes beyond certain propagation lengths. In the off-axis case, the moduli of complex degree of coherence patterns become drifted at the earlier propagation lengths. Among the beams investigated, the cos-Gaussian beam is found to be almost independent of the changes in the source partial coherence parameter, and the annular beam seems to be affected the most against the variations of the source partial coherence parameter.  相似文献

Based on the generalized Huygens–Fresnel integral, propagation of partially coherent Lorentz and Lorentz–Gauss beams through a paraxial ABCD optical system in a turbulent atmosphere was investigated. Analytical propagation formulae were derived for the cross-spectral densities of partially coherent Lorentz and Lorentz–Gauss beams. As an application example, the focusing properties of partially coherent Gaussian, Lorentz and Lorentz–Gauss beams in a turbulent atmosphere and in free space were studied numerically and comparatively. It is found that the focusing properties of such beams are closely related to the initial coherence length and the structure constant of turbulence. By choosing a suitable initial coherence length, a partially coherent Lorentz beam can be focused more tightly than a Gaussian or Lorentz–Gauss beam in free space or in a turbulent atmosphere with small structure constant at the geometrical focal plane.  相似文献

Based on the integral representation of Bessel function and the extended Huygens-Fresnel principle, an integral expression of the Wigner distribution function (WDF) for partially coherent Bessel-Gaussian beams (PBGBs) propagating through turbulent atmosphere has been obtained. Also, the analytical formulas of the M2-factor for PBGB propagation in such a medium have been derived, which can be applied to cases of different spatial power spectra of the refractive index fluctuations. The performed numerical results reveal that the M2-factor of a PBGB in turbulent atmosphere depends on the beam parameters of the initial input beam, the structure constants of the turbulent atmosphere, and the propagation distance. These results may be useful in long-distance optical communications in free space or in turbulent atmosphere.  相似文献

The measured intensity scintillations of an optical wave in the turbulent atmosphere depend strongly on the coherence properties of the source. In this paper we obtain results for the intensity variance in a weakly turbulent medium for the case when the source is spatially incoherent, but has an arbitrary degree of temporal coherence.  相似文献

Propagation properties of astigmatic sinh-Gaussian beams (ShGBs) with small beam width in turbulent atmosphere are investigated. Based on the extended Huygens–Fresnel integral, analytical formulae for the average intensity and the effective beam size of an astigmatic ShGB are derived in turbulent atmosphere. The average intensity distribution and the spreading properties of an astigmatic ShGB propagating in turbulent atmosphere are numerically demonstrated. The influences of the beam parameters and the structure constant of atmospheric turbulence on the propagation properties of astigmatic ShGBs are also discussed in detail. In particular, for sufficiently small beam width and sinh-part parameter as well as suitable astigmatism, we show that the average intensity pattern converts into a perfect dark-hollow profile from initial two-petal pattern when ShGBs with astigmatic aberration propagate through atmospheric turbulence.  相似文献

Reconstruction of the wind profile from the statistics of intensity fluctuations of an optical beam propagating in a turbulent atmosphere is considered. The equations for the spatiotemporal correlation function and the spectrum of weak intensity fluctuations of a Gaussian beam are obtained. The algorithms of wind profile retrieval from the spatiotemporal intensity spectrum are described and the results of end-to-end computer experiments on wind profiling based on the developed algorithms are presented. It is shown that the developed algorithms allow retrieval of the wind profile from the turbulent optical beam intensity fluctuations with acceptable accuracy in many practically feasible laser measurements set up in the atmosphere.  相似文献

By using the generalized beam formulation, the scintillation index is derived and evaluated for cosh-Gaussian beams in a turbulent atmosphere. Comparisons are made to cos-Gaussian and Gaussian beam scintillations. The variations of scintillations against propagation length at different values of displacement and focusing parameters are examined. The dependence of scintillations on source size at different propagation lengths is also investigated. Two-dimensional scintillation index distributions covering the entire transverse receiver planes are given. From the graphic illustrations, it is found that in comparison to pure Gaussian beams cosh-Gaussian beams have lower on-axis scintillations at smaller source sizes and longer propagation distances. The focusing effect appears to impose more reduction on the cosh-Gaussian beam scintillations than those of the Gaussian beam. The distribution of the off-axis scintillation index values of the Gaussian beams appears to be uniform over the transverse receiver plane, whereas that of the cosh-Gaussian beam is arranged according to the position of the slanted axis.  相似文献

Estimates of the scintillation index, fractional fade time, expected number of fades, and mean duration of fade time associated with a propagating Gaussian-beam wave are developed for uplink and downlink laser satellite-communication channels. Estimates for the spot size of the beam at the satellite or the ground or airborne receiver are also provided. Weak-fluctuation theory based on the log-normal model is applicable for intensity fluctuations near the optical axis of the beam provided that the zenith angle is not too large, generally not exceeding 60°. However, there is an increase in scintillations that occurs with increasing pointing error at any zenith angle, particularly for uplink channels. Large off-axis scintillations are of particular significance because they imply that small pointing errors can cause serious degradation in the communication-channel reliability. Off-axis scintillations increase more rapidly for larger-diameter beams and, in some cases, can lead to a radial saturation effect for pointing errors less than 1 μrad off the optical beam axis.  相似文献

We extend our theory of on-axis beam scintillations [Waves Random Media 4, 243 (1994)] for the case of propagation on slant turbulent paths, where turbulence is concentrated in a relatively thin layer near the transmitter. Our technique is based on the parabolic equation for optical wave propagation and the Markov approximation for the calculation of statistical moments of beam intensity. This first of two companion papers presents the details of the path integral formulation of the solution for the fourth-order coherence function. We also discuss in detail two analytic techniques that can be used for the treatment of the path integrals.  相似文献

The split-step Fourier-transform algorithm for numerical simulation of wave propagation in a turbulent atmosphere is refined to correctly include the effects of large-scale phase fluctuations that are important for imaging problems and many beam-wave problems such as focused laser beams and beam spreading. The results of the improved algorithm are similar to the results of the traditional algorithm for the performance of coherent Doppler lidar and for plane-wave intensity statistics because the effects of large-scale turbulence are less important. The series solution for coherent Doppler lidar performance converges slowly to the results from simulation.  相似文献

Based on the Huygens–Fresnel principle and the unified theory of coherence and polarization of partially coherent beams, we investigate the propagation characteristics of a partially coherent radially polarized doughnut (PCRPD) beam in a turbulent atmosphere. It is found that, after propagating through a turbulent atmosphere, the doughnut beam spot is changed into a circular Gaussian beam. Moreover, the degree of coherence, the degree of polarization and the degree of cross-polarization of the beam will change on propagation, and this change is dependent upon the degree of coherence of the source and atmospheric turbulence.  相似文献
